These poor kids are literally going through a Truman Show scenario, except that they've known their whole live that every moment has been broadcasted on RU-vid for all to see. I can't imagine how scarring that would be
I’m also concerned because kids especially adolescents often have a mental state called the imaginary audience. It’s where they think everyone is scrutinizing what they do much more than they actually are
I remember RU-vidr Totalbiscuit mentioning that his young son wanted to be in his videos, but that he turned him down every time. He knew as soon as he exposed his son to the true force of the internet, it would change his life forever, most likely for the worse. I admired a lot of TB's qualities, but his understanding that he needed to be a responsible parent in that way always stood out to me.
@@MoonTurky let's also pretend that the internet is a weird dark magic that instantly corrupts anyone who becomes famous on it and that people aren't just revealing their true nature

These channels are just the tip of the iceberg for the fucked up ways people exploit their children. What goes on everyday outside of general public scrutiny would be more correctly described as mind-numbingly horrifying.
That’s what happens in an individualistic capitalist society, it’s all about making money. Genuine human connections come *maybe later* if they even come to any realization.
My friend got into watching rich adult youtubers living the bachelor life, and I can't help but think he was living vicariously through them. I'm not a psychiatrist nor is it any of my business, but it just seemed unhealthy, maybe even depressing.
As a parent, family vlogging is despicable. The kids always seem like shells of humans, never knowing if the conversation is a genuine or for the vlog. I remember waking up when I was 8ish getting up in the middle of the night and peeing in the kitchen trash can...
true charlie, the only family channel i know that isnt like this is fgteev, they never cared about views or anything but raising their kids and making good content for other kids on youtube.they really raised me and now im proud of them like 10 years later.
its almost like we havent seen what so much pressure and attention has done to child stars consistently in the modern era. i cant imagine having the cameras in your actual home, having every relationship you have with a loved one have a performative aspect to it, can possibly to do a child. i worry about ryan a lot. i worry about all these kids. its some evil shit and these channels should damn well be held to child labour laws.
Social media is not for little children. Kids deserve the innocence of childhood. Exploiting your child’s emotions for money on the internet should be a crime.
My mom use to do a "family blog" where she photographed (thankfully not all video) a large majority of me and my siblings growing up between the years 2002-2011. She shut it down around the time family video channels were getting exposed for the same things now (overworking children, strangers using it for things that aren't okay, etc) but it's wild to think if it wasn't like this and it was on RU-vid how different everything would be.
It's gotten so bad that there are now scholarly essays and articles about the abuse behind these vlog channels. I wrote an argumentative essay on this topic for one of my college classes and if I hadn't already been against family channels, I sure as hell am now after that research
It's interesting to hear about this. I wonder if there's been research done about how social media family bloggers are part of their target audience's coping mechanisms. I'm sure this has been going on ever since celebrity status has existed though (forever)
When I was a child my stepmother always called and told her sister everything that has ever happened to me and it was traumatic to me I would tell her to stop it's none if her buisness and she would yell at me and tell me she can tell whoever she wants, I had nothing truly personal it was horrible. I couldn't actually imagine being on the internet for the whole world to see as a child Its unimaginable
That's what I thought too until someone pointed out it's real. This means at least 2 adults who raise children and vote, made this thumbnail and video, and then decided it was a good idea to post it, then thousands more people clicked on this video thinking it was worth watching and keeping in the back of their mind that they might see a lewd 12 year old. I want out of this fucking timeline.
Yes, and for some reason, the video was out there for a considerably long time. Unsurprisingly, the comments were full of ZAMN memes too. I remember searching for it thinking that it must be down already, only for it to be the first result
Another reason the disliked numbers should come back: to show that the general public doesn't want to see these horribly influential hunters exploit their children.
Dislikes never did anything, I wish people would stop acting like it impacted anything ever posted on here just because it's gone now. I don't watch family vlogs, and don't give them views. Even if you did dislike, your view still counted and now your algorithm is fucked up until you manually tell it to stop show you related content........ 🙄🙄
@@psomichelle2758 dislikes are what informs most viewers about the legitimacy or validity of a video. Removing it was a terrible choice on RU-vid's end. It being removed means that the only way you'd be able to tell if a video is good or not is to go to the comment section which can be heavily filtered by the creator so it doesn't really make sense. They removed it because of "harassment" and "dislike bombing" which would be valid reasons for giving the creator a choice of hiding the dislikes, not removing it from the platform as a whole.
@@cesj1 this absolutely isn't true; there have been multiple times where videos have been bombarded with dislikes and negative comments, even if what the person was saying wasn't bad/was true, or videos of blatant lies/misinformation being spread that faced very little criticism; a video having a good like to dislike ratio only means something in terms of legitimacy if the creator doesn't have a decently sized supportive audience.
When I was a kid like 15years ago I went to school with a girl who’s mom ran a “mommy blog”. Privacy did not exist in that house, everything got posted. Her every tantrum, bad day, overtired whining or injury got posted for thousands of anonymous strangers and to make it worse kids at school found it and bullied her about it. A lot of kids weren’t allowed to be friends with her because they’d be talked about in the next entry. I fully believe mommy blogs and family RU-vid channels that post every day are abusive because to keep up with that schedule you have to do away with privacy to generate enough content
Really it does I can't imagine what kids feel these days. I feel bad for them. I am lucky enough to have parents that didn't believe in post stuff online unless it's stuff like holidays or dinner parties.
Another reason why the dislike counter should come back: To show that the general viewing public do not want to see these horrible clout chasers exploit their children.
This is the exact reason they removed it, to prevent people like Charlie sending (either on purpose or not) over to dislike bomb crap like this. this crap makes youtube a LOT of money, why would they want it removed? they can't be seen helping this content because then they can't claim they ignorance, but that can remove obstacles for 'other' reasons that just so happen to help content like this and the content farms that spew out fake and dangerous how to style videos.
Ryan isn't a vlog channel though. He's more of a child actor where the parents (hopefully) take the ethical boundaries to make set pieces for recording but otherwise respect his life. The vlog channels are very different because they exploit normal lives of their children.

Along with family vlog channels, I absolutely HATE channels with neurodivergent kids and adults getting babied just because of their disability. I saw a mom on tiktok film her son having a breakdown and posting it on the internet for "educational" purposes. It's not educational, it's humiliating and its sickening how normal it is for neurodivergent people to be taken advantage of in vulnerable moments where privacy is needed the most.
Even worst if the abuse on children does count. Daddyofive is an infamous example of what every parents shouldn't be. I'm glad the two kids (Cody and Emma) cut ties with the dad and step mom stay with their real mom who won the custody. Everyone on the web knows what's going. The reupload of the videos does exist but it displays the legacy as one of the worst RU-vidrs on the list.
Agree 100%. There's this one channel called Fathering Autism that's particularly bad with this. (or at least they used to be- I haven't heard anything about them in a while) The dad claims their channel is to help other parents with autistic kids, but believe it or not, there's a way to do that WITHOUT shoving a camera in your kid's face 24/7 and violating their privacy. It's pretty clear their daughter doesn't even want to be on camera most of the time anyway. Just because someone has a disability and is, in the case of this kid, nonverbal, doesn't mean they don't deserve the same rights to privacy as everyone else.
absolutely. "autism moms" are some of the worst people ive ever had the misfortune of encountering online. half of them write articles about hating their child and wishing they would be cured. they talk about how their kids make THEIR lives harder without considering the pressure theyre constantly putting on their kids. a lot of them straight up film their kids having breakdowns and post it publicly. imagine being that kid, growing up, and finding the videos/articles of your mom broadcasting your symptoms to the entire world and wishing you were "normal". what a nightmare
This is also really enabling kidnappings. Ive heard a few mommy vloggers say the same thing: they had an incident where a stranger tried to pick up their kid from school. The person could give the kids full name, parents name, describe their car, house, activities, jobs. I feel like some daycares/schools could get tricked by this. Its just a matter of time.
SO TRUE. Parents used to always say to never give anyone a photo of yourself online or your name or anything about where you live, but now parents are just throwing this information out for anyone to see.

In about 10-20 years an absolute avalanche of documentaries and books are going to come out from the kids of these families detailing how their childhoods were stolen and how fucked the household dynamics were, mark my words.
That is a thing I spoke with a relative of mine about recently. There absolutely will be documentaries and discussions about this in the future when time moves on. And a lot of messed up stuff will come to light probably too. It's really disheartening to think about tbh.
I've got a masters degree in child psychology, and honestly Charlie the points you raised are bang on. The saddest part was when you speculated that the majority of children watching these channels are those from broken homes. It's heartbreaking and at the same time the kid is watching a dysfunctional family without even realising they are. Being exposed to these shitty examples of parenting could really mess a child up in the future if they start a family of their own. This is how they're learning to be parents themselves.
Yeah for instance always giving them candy. For real you give your kids candy Everytime they're on camera. That kind of treatment not only would alter how they learn to cope with problems but reinforces filming. Just unhealthy in many ways. IMHO.
Although you could argue the opposite, it could be spoiled/privileged kids that live somewhat sheltered lives and they enjoy seeing other kids get hurt because it's considered taboo. I came from a dysfunctional childhood and I always hated seeing this kind of stuff.
So true. I looked to movies and tv a lot to teach me about life… it didn’t serve me well. Took me a lot of failures and trauma to start really learning.
The only “good” family vlog channel I’ve ever seen is this one woman on tiktok who started by just filming tiktoks of making her kids lunch, and her kids actually ASKED to be in the tiktoks, and whenever a kid is crying or doesn’t wanna be on camera she NEVER shows them on camera. And even just based on the way she packs their lunches and knows all their favorite foods and snacks is very very wholesome.
There’s a few good gems. Not all of it is bad or exposes things that shouldn’t be seen. I think some people forget that we don’t live with these people. Not everyone is out to do malicious shit. So anyway, thecampisis channel is funny, it’s mostly the husband and wife ball busting each other, with occasional appearances from the kids. The other one I love is Beleaf in Fatherhood. He actually has educational videos where he just really shows you what it’s like being a parent of his family. You get to see all the interaction with his kids, and he psychologically breaks down and analyzes things. It’s also impressive to see the levels of communication skills his family has, all the way down to the youngest baby who’s maybe like 2? it’s pretty interesting and the intention is clearly not to expose anything so it’s all good by me.
@@WTFisHappeningToMe I don't remember the name or anything but i watched a documentary about a japanese single father making a bento for his daughter throughout her high-school days and including a special note with every single lunch. There is also a different channel on tik tok that is just parents recording while there babies do silly things and one in them does have a disease but they almost never talk about it.

The saddest part is that we cannot imagine growing up that way because we didn't, and we know it's wrong. But they don't. That's all they've ever known, it's normal for them. It would be odd if there was no camera around and that just breaks my heart.
Its how most animals and even lifeforms are, imagine all those animals in cages who are born there and will die there too, for their meat as food, reproductive glands for parfume or even just because another creature thinks you look good and wants to keep you in a cage just coe the fun of it. But these creatures dont know any different, its their life and their home, the place they have grown to feel as safe as they get to feel. My (mentally ill) mother watches family channels on RU-vid and she has no clue how they harm children. The one she watches FOSTERS and adopts, and currently has 21 children in their care. I cringe everytime she blasts it on her iPad. I was absolutely floored when I heard the parents asking all their kids for their ages, names, STATE, and not just their state...but TOWN that they all live in. Wtf? Not only are you showing your kid's face on camera, but now the audience knows their ages, names and where they live. Most of them ranged from 8-14. Absolutely no excuse to push a camera in your kid's face and encourage them to give out personal information.
That reminds me of that absolutely terrifying religious cult family on RU-vid. They dress in all white except for the creepy father who is twice the mothers age. They have 10 children yet spend months out of the year living in a caravan, the children are all homeschooled (never a good sign with religious fundamentalists). They named them all after fantasy characters and historical figures (cleopatra, Aphrodite, one is literally named King James) they terrify me
These channels absolutely appeal to pedos. I remember reading a certain AMA on Reddit that made me realize real pedos will get off to even completely normal family pics randomly found on social media. So 'family vlogs' must be a goldmine to them. It's probably the main reason I hate this type of channel. The idea of parents exposing their children to really gross people for money is just deplorable.

There is also no guarantee he will ever see any of the money he worked for. If his parents are truly awful (I’m not saying they are), they could choose to never give him a dime
They see it as hating because it calls them out for what they really are. It forces them to be confronted with the fact that they have failed as parents.
Yes! This! If you bring it to their attention that what they’re doing could have negative impacts on their children they always say you’re “hating” or “bringing negativity” to their channel. And they’ll always say that because if they do any sort of self reflection on their actions they wouldn’t be able to justify exploiting their children for their own personal wealth.

It’s almost like gaslighting, I’d totally doubt my memories and wonder if the day was actually fine and I was just the problem or something. And that’s just one way I’d feel crazy!! Don’t even get me started on feeling like you’re screaming and nobody can hear you over your parents fucked up narrative that everything is great. So many ways to fuck up your kid with one video!!! Heartbreaking to think of the kids trying to process as they get older
Reminds me of Gary Crosby's claims about his father, Bing Crosby: "Then the lights came on and the movie was over. All the way back to the house I thought about the difference between the person up there on the screen and the one I knew at home."
Rhett and Link do parenting as a RU-vidr correctly imo They keep their kids' privacy and let them cameo on an episode if they want to occasionally, and most times will refuse to talk about anecdotes that their kids might not want to be out there. They put the kids first, knowing not all of them will grow up and want their bad days to be on the Internet for anyone to see

I used to be a fan of Dance Moms and a lot of what you said aligns with what happened on that show. They'd put little girls in sexy and skin-colored clothes because that will draw people in out of sheer curiosity. Then people would talk about it and more people would see the show. I don't even know how many times the girls on that show had panic attacks. The producers LOVED that shit. These little girls are saying they can't breathe, and they're so stressed out because they're afraid of their dance teacher. And it's not like their moms could just take them somewhere else, they were contracted to it. And the producers set things up to make people look bad. It didn't matter if it was a child or an adult. For example, Peyton was told to say her and the rest of her team danced better than anyone else there, and they made it look like she said she was better than her teammates. She got death threats on social media because the producers made her look bad. Most of those girls are in their late teens and early 20s. The world watched them grow up. A lot of them (and their mothers) have been talking about the realities of the "reality" show they were on. How fake it was, how being on the show affected their mental health etc. It's becoming too easy to take advantage of vulnerable people and the reasons for doing so are much more narcissistic than ever.

Wow holy shit you nailed the kid viewer group. I have two daughters, aged 7 and 5. They started watching those channels and I cracked down on it hard. It was encouraging bad behavior, exaggerated and over-the-top reactions and no impulse control. I watched the whole thing because I just couldn’t understand how you would risk putting your family in danger to talk about your vlog. It was also the only video they had with the comments turned off!
For the adults who have this attachment to family channels, it feels very “One Hour Photo” like. “One Hour Photo” is a movie with Robin Williams playing a photo development technician at a store who gets obsessed with one of the families that gets their photos developed there because he’s lonely, so he forms this parasocial relationship with them and feels like he’s a part of their lives and imagines he’s a part of the memories in the photos they take. As for the kids of the family vlog channels, I can’t imagine the level of paranoia that would come from being constantly seen by millions regularly. Feeling like you have to be “palatable” and socially perform, becoming too closed off to enforce boundaries you never had, becoming too open because you’re used to the scrutiny and display, etc. it’s overall a destructive thing for everyone
Knowing evil family channels like these exist and continue to make a killing on their children's suffering is certainly one more out of countless fucked up things on this earth that make me feel like the eye nightmare scene in that movie. Edit: Hell, this thread got me watching One Hour Photo again... and the dialogue scene of Sy at the end not only heavily touches upon traumatized children's need for parasocial interaction, but also _horrendously predicts_ the difficult adult life dealing with said trauma that the children of these family channels will have to face in the future: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OdU3vEh3qfs.html *_(obvious spoilers for those who haven't watched the movie)_*

I can't get that clip out of my head of the mother and son inside their car at the vets that you shared, where she was asking him to cry for the camera over their dog. He legit just wanted a sincere cuddle from his mum and she was just asking him to look sad. The real gut punch was his response of "I am sad, I am crying" or words to that effect. It was months ago, and as a father it has stuck with me. How many more moments like that happen in these vlog houses? Makes me shudder man...
This is the exact clip I was thinking of too. Very emotionally neglectful and abusive. As someone who was emotionally abused that video made me feel physically sick- and that kind of thing probably happens to that kid all the time...
@@Alice-wf4pu She deleted her channel, but her name is Jordan Cheyenne and Charlie has covered it ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jaR-tvLTdyk.html Edit: She has remade her channel and it really does continue to seem like she couldn't care less about what she's done, she was just sad her revenue was cut in the months she was under too much fire to post content. Very stinky vibes
There’s a top comment I really like where the guy is like being really sincere about how Charlie helped him in a rough spot and like 6 bots appeared in the replies it’s really sad
Family vlog channels appeal to the people who feel insecure about their own families, they want to rise up to the standards of the “dream” family when in reality that family is miserable
As a parent I don't even put photos of my kid on social media. It feels wrong because they can't consent. When they're older I can imagine them being weirded out about all their pics being shared.
I have pictures of me and my brother on underwear posted on facebook by family members from 2014 and so, and it honestly disgusts me and I just wish no one sees them and for me to forget this, another reason I hate using social media and cannot use it, I just hate people like this
@@Lucas-Nunes There are many growth hacking (new marketing methods) tools that allow anyone to find public user profiles on social medias based on location, interests, family situation, career, etc... The worst enemy to privacy is not the companies or the governments, it's the fucking humans sharing their privacy to each others. People crying out and spending 100s of dollars in VPN, anti-virus, password vaults, encryption tools, etc... Are the same ones who share their lives on social medias. It's like going the extra miles to put triple layers of obstruction to your windows but letting your front door open with a sign that say "we got anything you looking for in there". I hope for you your family understands and choose to delete these pictures before some creeps save them and start sharing them around. It happened to a lot of folks in the early 2000s unfortunately and these pictured are still being uploaded to shady websites and message boards. :/
@@charlesm.2604 Sorry for late response btw My family is filled with, and I mean it, stupid people I live in a small town in the middle of nowhere where technology is difficult-ish to access and most people are dumb with it I don't have social media due to my privacy No wait My family made one FOR me without telling me and giving most of my personal information in said facebook profile I can't delete it myself, so I simply deleted the app and hope it is forgotten
@@Lucas-Nunes Small towns are the worst when it comes to technology awareness. My family was from one too but thank god I became a software engineer so I could move out for this shit hole ! As far as your account goes I'd say unfortunately it's already too late. There are thousands of program owned by third party entities called "scrappers" that navigate social medias and parse public profiles to store user informations into databases. Chances are your account has already been processed by multiple scrappers at this point. The only way to get red it of it is to manually delete it (and have access to it) but the scrappers who already processed it have won. If you are really scared, foil hat andy, you could always make new accounts with the same name and same past but with new present. Lie about your eduction, relationship, current country/city, join groups you don't care about, etc... That way scrappers who already have processed your original account will find one of those fake accounts, get confused about who is he real you and update their database with fake data.
@@Lucas-Nunes But you won't be able to escape Facebook itself using this method. Facebook are able to track people who don't even own Facebook accounts. They use what are known are "Graph Based Algorithms" to deduct related internet users that have never interacted with each others. It's kinda crazy when you hear it but it's a very common practice as well.
Family vlog channels are a form of child abuse. It's one thing if the channel was focused on something else and just happens to feature children now and then, but this takes it to another level.
The icky feeling I have after watching every single "family vlog" tells me everything I need to know about these channels. It's gross. The gut feeling I have about these families is just really, really bad vibes
I was raised in a similar situation where I was constantly forced into a family blog against my will. I really hope these kids can escape as soon as possible.
I'd have to argue that this is probably part of the reason why kids don't seem to understand that they need to protect their personal information. I blamed Twitter culture and carrds for the most part, but that's probably small change compared to the damage family vlog channels do to the concept of privacy in growing kids' minds as they watch this content.
When Charlie mentioned the possibility of wholesome family channels, the one that popped to mind was the "How to Dad" channel. Compared to other channels it seems actually genuine, and just the family goofing around.
I was thinking of "How To Dad" as well, you can see that the girls genuinely enjoy goofing around with their dad to make these silly videos and they voluntarily decide to partake in them and can leave at any time. He also doesn't share too much info and his channel is mainly just skits, not actual vlogs as well
Cringe comment "you know these parents abuse their kids off camera" no you don't maybe some but not all and alot of the times the only ones that do that are the unstable or annoying asf ones like prince family
I've been saying now for a while: I'm sure, in upcoming years, we will be introduced with new child protection laws that will target family vlog channels, instagram babies/kids that are being put on the spot light by the parents etc. Because I think already it's getting out of hand with all these mommy vloggers. I see Europe starting this movement first, but it would be awesome if it started in US, because then it would be easier and faster pass in other countries too.
The US, much like youtube, craves the big $$$$ and will work to allow parents or guardians of children to exploit their kids for adverts and notoriety. When it comes to these matters in the government and freedoms, it could be viewed as overstepping certain rights - such as the capacity to make an income.
@@StoicVeR Interesting...I could easily see that as the main argument, and it's a difficult one to address. I suppose there's a reasonable middle ground somewhere, where the law doesn't overstep it's bounds. To make matters worse, while these protective laws that involve labor and exploitation DO get written from time to time, we're a reactionary nation of laws. We'll need a rather large crisis or story before anyone even begins to considers this.
@@StoicVeR The only way this will end is if enough people boycott these family channels so they're no longer profitable, which will then mean they have no more influence and also no more money to bribe the government to not arrest them.
My son is 6. People say he is gorgeous and should be on SoMe - no he shouldn't. He shouldn't even do modelling. There's not 1 public picture of him. Just imagine him being 15, having pictures, let alone videos, of him as a 6 year old being publicly available......Some people are out of their minds.
