Little Richard helped define the early rock ‘n’ roll era of the 1950s with his driving, flamboyant sound. With his croons, wails and screams, he turned songs like “Tutti Frutti” and “Long Tall Sally” into huge hits and influenced such bands as the Beatles. Born Richard Wayne Penniman on December 5, 1932, in Macon, Georgia, Little Richard was the third of 12 children. His father, Bud, was a stern man who made his living selling moonshine and didn’t do much to hide his disdain for his son’s early signs of homosexuality. At the age of 13 Richard was ordered to move out of the family home, and his relationship with his father was never repaired. When Richard was 19, his father was shot dead outside a local bar.
The childhood that Richard did manage to have was largely shaped by the church. Two of his uncles, as well as his grandfather, were preachers, and Richard was involved with the church as much as anyone in his family, singing gospel and eventually learning to play the piano.
Upon moving out of his family’s home, Richard was taken in by a white family who owned a club in Macon, where Richard eventually began performing and honing his talent.
In 1951 Richard caught his first major break when a performance at an Atlanta radio station yielded a record contract with RCA. But with a repertoire of mainly mild blues numbers that masked the searing vocals and piano that would come to define his rock music, Richard’s career failed to take off as he'd hoped it would.
In 1955 Richard hooked up with Specialty Records producer Art Rupe, who’d been hunting for a piano-pounding frontman to lead a group of musicians in New Orleans. In September, Richard stepped into the recording studio and pumped out “Tutti Frutti,” an instant Billboard hit that reached No. 17.
Over the next year and a half, the musician churned out several more rock hits, including “Long Tall Sally,” “Good Golly Miss Molly” and “Send Me Some Lovin’.” With his blood-pumping piano playing and suggestive lyrics, Little Richard, along with the likes of Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis, established rock as a real musical form and inspired others, most notably the Beatles, to make a go of it.
In addition to his records, Little Richard appeared in several early rock films, such as Don’t Knock the Rock (1956), The Girl Can’t Help It (1957) and Mister Rock ‘n’ Roll (1957).
On May 9, 2020, Richard died at the age of 87 at his home in Tullahoma, Tennessee, from a cause related to bone cancer, after a two-month illness. His brother, sister, and son were with him at the time of his death. In the following days, Richard received tributes from many popular musicians, including Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, John Fogerty, Elton John, and Lenny Kravitz, as well as many others, such as film director John Waters, who were influenced by Richard's music and persona. He is interred at Oakwood University Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Huntsville, Alabama.

I was told he did have a will. He was very Humble. I was told he didn't want nothing to flashy or fancy. He'd did all that and put all that material stuff behind. He just wanted to make it to Heaven. I'm sure he was in a lot of pain, Bone cancer is very painful. My best friend mother had Bone cancer and she had to be careful how she touched her, her Bones got so Brittle that the slightest pressure and one of her Bones would Break. Little Richard did manage to live a good life, Traveling, all over. He lived his life. I guess by the time he was diagnosed. All he wanted was to get his life right. He wanted to Go to Heaven. Material things no longer mattered. He just wanted his soul to be right with God. I think he did that. I truly believe all was well with his soul. I think his final wishes was carried out. I'm told he chose the place he wanted to be buried. To me that speak volumes about what was important to him in the end. You can't take it with you. Our bodies are just vessels for our soul. Once we take our last breath we don't need these bodies no more. Our spirit, the soul goes back to our Heavenly Father of Most High that created it. I Believe that. I serve a just and forgiving God. I Believe when my time comes I'll be with my Lord and Savior. Father God of most high is the judge. No matter what man think. Father God has the last word. John 3:16 matters to me and I believe it. I'm sure Little Richard. Did what he needed to do to make sure his soul went back to Father God that created it.once he has forgiven us. It's done. Love, respect, and positivity always. Vj.

I saw Little Richard in person, not at a show, but as a passenger in coach when I was flying from Atlanta to LAX on Delta. He got on board and was his usual "attention getting self". Hard not to know who he was. His music was great. 87 with his different life style habits certainly was a milestone. So sar for the 16 year old to be killed for a sandwich and then the person who shot him didn't even serve the 20 years. RIP to both the 16 year old teenager and Little Richard.

With a lot of early rock pioneers, Little Richard lost momentum when he abandoned rock n roll for religious music at the height of his fame. There is no doubt he highly influenced Elvis and The Beatles. Knowing that, part of Little Richard's legacy is his good natured humor. He wasn't afraid to be who he was. The tiny headstone seemed to show that Little Richard knew that the focus is on God, not a celebration of stardom, influence or fame. RIP Little Richard.

I also think there are many reasons why certain celebrities don't have fancy grave sites and yes, most of us are surprised when some big global superstar has a simple grave. At the end of the day, it is the "fans" who see them that way, they probably just saw themselves as who they were. Just someone who was successful in their job. Great video :)

I was born in Macon GA.. I know the neighborhood. He was around Grannie age. They all knew him. Macon did him wrong by chasing him out if town. But he was as proud of being from Macon GA as we all are as having him born here. He did give back, he did come back gave money to the city. I'm so happy his home was saved. They did a great job. Macon has a lot of history.it is redding, Little Richard, James Brown used to hang out in our neighborhood . But Macon is very proud that Little Richard was born here. Watching him on TV was fun, had he not left, he might not be the person he was. No he was not conceited, he was convinced. He did lead the path for a lot to follow . I often go back home, visit the neighborhood. Family is still there. I'm positive Little Richard made it. That God welcomed him with open arms. Rejoice in paradise Little Richard. We will never forget you, we will always love you. Peace, love, light, Respect and positivity always. Vee j and family. And for those who don't care, Shut Up.

I live in Huntsville. My husband and I visit Little Richard's grave periodically, and leave flowers. The bouquet that kept falling over was one I had brought (thank you for straightening it). It looks like someone moved it from the original spot, probably to make room for the wreath. The wreath is definitely a recent addition, and was not there right after the funeral. At that time, as per usual after a burial, many standing wreaths were left and there were flowers strewn across the grave. Over time, these gradually disappeared (not sure if people took them, or the cemetery eventually discarded them). He did not have a headstone at all for over a year. There was just a little metal placard which someone eventually took. After that, for a long time there was nothing at all to mark the grave. Fans would create signs and place there. I assumed at some point his family would have a headstone placed there, but it takes time and money to have it done. I am glad he now has a permanent stone in place.

I discovered Little Richard in the 80's in comedies & talk shows. A modest tombstone but he was not modest which made him awesome. You made great points regarding why tombstones are not what we expect from celebrities. Its a personal choice such as choosing a burial versus cremation. That poor 16 year old child was probably hungry & for him to pass away because of that is a disgrace. The judicial system is a disgrace as well. Every state is different when it comes to the legal system which is scary. Very nice of you to include this child in this video

Great video Scott! It feels like Little Richard has been around forever. When he passed I was so shocked. He truly was the architect of rock and roll. It's so sad about the 16 year old killed for a lunchbox and the killer only got 5 years. It's just not right. Rest in Peace to Little Richard and to the young man ❤

I truly believe because he was so flamboyant throughtout his life, I think he wanted to be modest, and simple in his death.

In the end, a huge expensive marker is not necessary and is a monument to vanity.. Jonas Salk's marker is a nondescript plaque. Very humble for a man who saved tens of millions of lives and saved just as many from immeasurable suffering. He is a true celebrity with no problems with a grandoise ego.

Nice job. LR always lifts my mood. In the 50's. My brothers and I hand milked cows to an arched radio playing LR. And all the others.

I didn't learn about him until little bit later because I was born in 1969 but I know of him as an artist and he was great the man was a genius in my opinion

Hey Scott, awesome vlog. Your right, there could many reasons, but in Little Richard's case it wasn't for lack of cash, his net worth was 40 million. So it was like you said it probably was a personal choice. Beautiful vlog as usual, you make some great videos, always informative, and enlighten. Many Thanks. 🤟🤟

Great tribute Scott, informative and respectful. I grew up on Little Richard's music via my Mum, she loved him. 87 years old is a good innings unfortunately some don't get that amount of time. Sad story of the 16 year old young man. Parents never get over their child dying that young. My aunty lost 2 together ages 16 and 15 with their 15 yr old friend. She was never the same, only finding solace when my Aunty found out she was dying from cancer, she was ready and excited to join her children.

I can count on one hand and still might not need all my fingers the true pioneers of rock n roll and little Richard is definitely one of them if not number one. It's so sad that Elvis got all of the attention and success and the true kings of rock n roll didn't.
