Quick note about Shari's Berries. If no one over the age of 21 is on hand to sign for them at the time of their delivery, they don't leave the box. You either have to wait for them to try again, or, pick up the box yourself from the UPS location they're kept in. I sent my Mom one of their standard boxes (1/2 dozen berries) to her home address. It was her birthday today. It was meant to be a fun surprise, but, it's turned into a bit of a hassle. The package was delivered (on the correct day) while she was at work. No one else was home. Long story short - my dad's taking the day off to pick them up at our closest UPS shipping center tomorrow. At 34+ dollars it really wasn't worth the trouble. It's just chocolate covered fruit. The signing policy may have been part of the terms of service, but, it's a pain in the ass regardless. Just make sure your intended recipient is going to be home on the chosen day of shipment....if....you actually choose to try these.

Hard netting started as an awkward little segment and now it's a wonderful and passionate moment I expect at the end of every podcast just because I love their insights and debates.

Despite only being 19 and not relating to much you guys talk about (when talking about your lives) I still am very interested, I could genuinely listen to Adam and everyone talk about the troubles of buying a house for at least an hour or two

Open world game design is something that's been really interesting to follow over the last few years. Back when some games were noted to be open world rather than sandbox, I remember a big complaint a lot of early open world games received was a lack of 'things to do' (see Assassin's Creed 1). In somewhat knee jerk-jerk reaction against this, and also to inflate the claims of "hundreds of hours of content" a lot of open world games have become sort of bloated with tasks and objectives that are sort of mundane, detached or self-serving. So many of the missions to upgrade stuff in Ubisoft games (and other open world games) like you say become obsolete after the first few, and because there's a lack of variety between them, a lot of the desire to complete all the 'hunting challenges' (or any other open world activity substitute) come purely from a completionist, checklist mindset. And because many developers want fans to see as much content as possible (and fans want to easily be able to find tasks in game) they became marked and easily tracked by players on the map. You can see the evolution of this change from Assassin's Creed 1 - 2 where the collectables in 1 could not be marked on the map, whereas in 2 you could eventually buy a map to see all of them. The problem is that a world feeling 'empty' or needing 'stuff to do' for an open-world/ sandbox game is that the solution of filling it with side objectives only tangentially useful to the main game, runs somewhat counter to the desire for a sandbox experience. For some subsets of players, it will be hard to ignore the checklist nature of these tasks and it can become easy to lose sight of the 'playground' aspect of Sandbox games and get tunnel visioned into completing the tasks, looking at the bottom left corner of the screen for 75% of your gameplay navigating from waypoint to waypoint. What I think is interesting is that we've started to turn a corner in open world design in how to actually apply an open world properly and move away from players seeing the content as busy work. Games like BOTW having no in-game markers, forcing the player to catalogue and choose what's important to them to complete really add to that, and having such a large number of shrines/korok seeds that it is somewhat obvious that players aren't expected to get them all, make approaching the world much more liberating. Can you imagine how much worse BOTW would be if everything had a marker on the mini map? The Witcher 3 while not perfect (suffers eventually from a bit of icon clutter), manages to remedy a lot of these open world woes by having practically every piece of side content have an enjoyable self-contained story that is rewarding to its own end. Final Fantasy XV (which the design team was heavily inspired by the Witcher 3 btw) has a really compelling gameplay loop of day/night, camping, and eating, that helps to put the tasks of the game into a more relevant context for the play and sets up a pretty good cut off point for many players play sessions. It's much easier to feel accomplished in an open world game when you're reviewing some stupid photos of your escapades at a camp fire. Red Dead Redemption for me is an interesting case because I think the original had a really pleasing amount of content. I might be looking through slightly rose-tinted glasses, but no tasks really felt excruciatingly dragged out, although that may in part be due to how comfy just taking in the ambience of RDR can be. I really hope that the sequel takes cues from the original on that front and doesn't feel bloated or dragged out to complete, 100%ing the original felt like just how long that process should take for me. I noticed that I conflated open world with sandbox a lot here, although I would consider them pretty separate terms. Many open world games don't really qualify as sandbox, and I reckon that being a linear game doesn't preclude a sandbox experience. Thinking of these two in the same way, might lead to a lot of mechanics and ideas that don't belong in a game being implemented out of habit.

Not to suck on the phallus of Funhaus too much, but the opening exchange at 39:54 to 40:05 for E & L's indie corner was fantastic. The way Elyse without missing a beat follows up on Lawrence's comment in the same format and then they nonchalantly end the discussion immediately was incredibly funny. I'm always amazed at how well these guys play off each other that it seems like these segments are written out when in fact they're just people making fun discussions.

I live in Upstate South Carolina. I bought a HUD repo house for 32k. The owner had died and the bank possessed it then it got passed on to HUD. I spent 8k fixing it up. It's appraised at 63k now. The trick to buying a house is not buying some overpriced beyond your means to afford house. I own my house out right. No Bank owns it. I bought something I had the money to buy and I worked hard on it myself to double it's worth.

There is actually a few references to other Far Cry games and other Ubisoft games in Far Cry 3 and 4. Far Cry 3's "The Lost Expedition" questline is all about the research done on the island that eventually lead to the creation of the animus in Assassin's Creed. In Far Cry 3 and 4, Hurk and Willis are recurring characters. In Far Cry 4, Hurk talks about "Tat-bros", and he references Jason (from FC3) and the protagonist from Far Cry 1 (Who's name I can't remember.)

I think Blood Dragon probably was my favorite Far Cry game, honestly. As someone who's not too big of a fan of the dragged out, filler-ridden open world games it was refreshing with a shorter, super-game-y one that just got straight to the point.

Persona 5 isnt a very sandboxy game, but I think that one nailed the aspect of side missions and storyline. Every activity you do can either boost your stats or give you important items or even give you new abilities and mechanics to enjoy the "main" dungeon crawler aspect of the game. Heck, I'm almost at the end of the game and I keep finding minor social link stories I can follow, that are completely optional and easy to miss but they open new battle mechanics that you would never imagine they are even there. And then there's the fact that all of those side stories are nicely written, just like another game that nails the side quests: The Witcher 3. So there are ways of really making those optional things useful and fun and important for the game. Not only the Ubisoft Type of side distractions that are repetitive and have mostly no impact on the over all experience.

Westerns are my all time favourite genre. Grew up watching them with my Dad. So hopefully more western games keep coming out. Cant wait for RDR2. I enjoyed Primal a lot more than I ever thought I would. E3 is looking incredibly promising.

Rockstar Games once made a licensed game for that old late 70's movie, The Warriors and it kicked ass! I wouldn't mind to see more current-gen video game versions of older movies.

Call Of Juarez Gunslinger was a very campy fun first person shooter, add that with Far Cry's open world as well as some other quirky fun mechanics I think it will be great. The shooting in COJG felt great, and in this new Far Cry could add the Far Cry 2 mechanic of a gun getting jammed in the middle of a shootout. The way the story was told in COJG was also great, with people constantly interrupting the story to say what they heard happened. Maybe having the main character be someone as notorious as Butch Cassidy or Billy The Kid would also craft a great narrative not really tackled in games. Basically what I'm saying is make Call Of Juarez Gunslinger open world.

There actually are a few Easter eggs connecting the far cry universe with the assassins creed universe. In far cry 3 there's a hidden bunker with the assassins logo on it and there are a few things here and there in watchdogs as well. Its actually pretty cool if you look into it

FarCry seems to always take place in an area where there are is ongoing conflict and you're always the resolution regardless of what decisions you make during the process. Always the saviour of the people.

I think one of the best things Rockstar does with games like GTA and Red Dead Redemption is they contextualise the tone of their gameplay through story. Like you know exactly when you're going into a mission, but you feel rewarded watching a 5 minute cutscene because the following gameplay is in response to a situation. Other games leave the player to make their own mind up on how they choose to approach missions, but the problem with that is leaving too many networks open for players can also lessen the impact of the story, and if that being the case then you're only hook to a game is it's mechanics (which to be honest, nowadays isn't enough for gamers to be satisfied with the experience). I think companies like Ubisoft are slowly getting there, but they need to start contextualising their gameplay more, make us feel invested in the decisions we make IF you choose to make it an open world, freedom of choice game.

One thing about Red Dead and Far Cry. Red Dead, if the last game is anything to go by, probably won't dive into any folklore or spirituality of the era in any meaningful way. However, in Far Cry, I feel like that is one of the main staples in recent games. Far Cry 3, if I remember correctly, you fought a freaking giant demon. Far Cry 4 had Shangri-La. Primal had that crazy dude that made you drink eyeballs to have visions. If they do it right, Ubisoft will find that the American West and Native culture has a treasure trove of these kinds of things. Skinwalkers, Ravenmockers, Spiritwalking, Big Foot, etc. They could even go the other way and touch on Christian ideas of vistor angels and Heaven that was prevalent of the time, like with the Mormons. That's something I'm excited to see what they do with.
