Farewell to Pope Benedict 

I will trust in God. Even though it’s difficult, I will continue to walk with faith and not by sight. Please pray for me. My husband passed away years ago. I’m all alone. I’m a single mother. Both of my sons are autistic, they require a lot from me because they are non verbal. Every month is a struggle, to not end up on the streets. I lost my job as a social worker at Forsyth hospital because I declined the vaccine. I declined because of my pre existing health condition lupus, and heart disease. I was denied my medical/religious exemption. I wish I could go back but the mandate is still in place for hospitals that participate in Medicare and Medicaid all employees must have covid 19 vaccine. I get harassed constantly and mocked for sharing my testimony and for asking for prayers but prayers are all I want and I also want to bring awareness of how vaccine mandates are ruining many ppls lives. I’m now waitressing and I’m so thankful but not making nearly enough to get by. I’m tired of struggling putting food on the table it’s so discouraging. But even as I’m put down and mocked because of my situation. I still have faith that our Heavenly Father will provide he has THIS FAR! Faith over fear. Please pray for me and my boys! God bless! 🥰

He was such a blessing to the world. Not many people are confident to hold firm in their faith these days. I agree, he was not the extremist that the media liked to paint.

I can’t help but compare pope Benedict to St. Joseph, who’s name he carried. Loyal, in the background, fulfilling the task given to him by God to the end. And yet so strong in his humility and faithfulness to the Church. I can imagine he must have suffered so much because of all that’s happening in our Church. Because when you love, you suffer. A true father and shepherd. I feel grateful for his life and happy that he finally comes face to face with the Lord he loved so much and can receive his crown from Him. Rest in peace!

He was another chosen one. His clarity of thought and writing made him truly distinguished yet he never lost his humility. GOD be forever praised.

I remember when he was elected: my mother and I were watching the news with bated breath. At the time, we were attending Mass at a culturally German parish, and hearing a German-speaking Cardinal had been raised to the Papacy was *huge* for the people of that parish. I personally loved the "God's Rottweiler" description: a well-trained Rotti will protect their family but also be a lovable, loving canine member of that same family, and that's Papa Bene all over.

I think it should also be noted that the fact that he was willing to retire, when he felt compelled by the lord to do so, demonstrates a level of humbleness that few others would be willing to do. To be so powerful, then to be willing to give that up. Great humility. That will be a part of his legacy that many outside of the church will point at … And I find that to be a super honorable act to cap off a life of service. 🙏

Pope Benedict is my favourite because (I.e. one reason) he gave our Bishop (Denis Croteau of Makenzie-Fort Smith, Canada) permission to ordain my husband, a former Anglican priest, as a Roman Catholic priest-missionary in the Arctic. It was the best thing that ever happened to us, after our children!

Pope Benedict the XVI more than any other writer/thinker led me to the Catholic Faith. What an amazing soul, who could make complex intellectual thought accessible to simpler folks like me. Even greater, though, his humble devotion to our Lord. That always was my first takeaway from his thoughts. I heard his last recorded words were “Lord, I love you!” …and this is no surprise.

I had a very negative opinion of Pope Benedict for various reasons, but I am so glad that I listen to Bishop Barron's video this morning. I wish the Church spent more time educating us on these pillars of our history. Many of our popes who follow Pope John Paul are overshadowed by the charisma and popularity of John Paul. He was a tough act to follow. Thanks for this video as it has strengthened my knowledge of our Church.

Thank you, once again, your Excellency, for this very sobering and appeasing testimony. As a Bishop, I don't suppose you'd be properly labelled "mystic" (am I wrong to think this field of exploration is possible in office-holding roles?) but your talks do indeed open my mind and my heart in mystical ways: ways that truly awaken the Lord's Peace. I only know Pope Benedict for very select news clips and articles (always speaking ABOUT him rather than WITH him ... I only recently understood that in English, that is called gossip) but your reviews of his work really help me understand what is happening in the Church, and with people of any ilk. Same thing with Bishop Fulton Sheen (some televised words taken out of context can be shocking). Thank you for truly doing, in my view anyway, the Lord's work. Dominus vobiscum.

What struck me very much was the picture of - then - Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger with Jürgen Habermas (in my humble opinion one of the greatest philosophers of our time (also very humble and open ... Habermas even considered for his theory of communication my thought to add understandability (in Dutch: 'begrijpelijkheid') to his original fundament of dialogue of truth, honesty (in Dutch 'eerlijkheid') and normative rightness (in Dutch 'rechtvaardigheid'). If one looks at Habermas' proposal to divide life-world-thinking and system-world-thinking (not to confuse with system-thinking!!!), in my view it really gives great insight in a whole lot of trouble we are into right now as Catholics. As Catholics we want to live a truthful live, we strive to be really honest and we are convinced that our norms are right. The problem is always that our opposing parties don't really understand the Catholic way of reasoning. In the picture of Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger and Jürgen Habermas I really enjoyed the joy they had to be in each other companionship! May Pope Benedict XVI rest in peace in the friendship and presence of our Lord! He really deserves it! Perhaps not liked by everybody, but really respected and loved by the people who knew him as a person.

Thanks Bishop, great eulogy of a great man. Refreshing to not hear a lot of the harsh and unfair criticism that has accompanied much of the reporting of his death too (even from fellow Bishops). As an aside, I wonder if you'd consider devoting some time to Hans Kung one day? I'm reading "On Being a Christian" and am finding it really persuasive and articulate and struggle to see why some of the church shunned him so badly.

When I hear you say God's Rottweiler, Bishop Barron. I think of my friend and relative, Dale. He has said that he likes the Rottweiler breed and thought Pope Emmeritus Benedict XVI would be someone he would like to have a conversation with. I think that is pretty neat. I used to see teenagers with bumper stickers that said "my German Shepard is Benedict XVI. They would get those bumper stickers for passing drivers education. Our school activities association decided they would be neat because Benedict XVI had a love for dogs, horses, cattle, cats, chickens and geese. Probably creatures from his farm life. Now I want to read some more about him and some of his books. Thank you Bishop Barron for your educational encouragement and endeavors with Word on Fire.

He was a giant of faith and mind and faithfull till the end to everything what Jesus Christ taught and gave us!, Now he begins a new and real life with all those who remained faithful!

Thank you Bishop Barron for sharing with us the person of the late Pope Benedict XVI, yes, there were so many reasons to be grateful to him. I became interested to look back at his life and how he defended the faith using the gift of reason. This video which i have shared has been very helpful.
