• 1. BREATHING EXERCISES...
STEPS TO FOLLOW:
1️⃣Before you begin make sure you have good posture, with feet hip width apart, standing tall with a slightly raised sternum, always keeping the shoulders down. Inhale silently through the mouth or nose. You should be expanding around the abdominal area and ribcage and possibly around the back. Everybody is different, so don't stress if you don't feel expansion in the back. Don't breathe in too much or over inflate.
2️⃣Suspend means to keep the ribcage in an expanded position, not allowing it to collapse. Basically it means staying in the inspiratory position for longer. During the suspension there should be no tension in the throat. The vocal folds are completely relaxed (meaning you could still breathe in and out). Don't hold your breath, by closing the throat i.e. as in bearing down to lift something, keep the throat open. The suspension causes the diaphragm to ascend slower than usual, creating a steady stream of air. This is the secret to singing long phrases.
3️⃣Exhale: Keep the sternum raised as you exhale. The belly button will gradually move toward your spine and the lower ribs will also move inwards. If you run out of air, pull the belly button in slightly.
For the next breathing cycle, release the abdominals (belly button area) and inhale silently again.
The Farinelli exercise is name after an Italian castrato singer of the 18th century who apparently had extraordinary breath control. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farinelli

doing this for a month i saw massive improvements. at first, 8 was pushing my limits, but i can now say im comfortably and consistently doing 20. if you're just starting this, here's some tips: -stick to it and don't be hard on yourself. youve got this. i have asthma and can't run more than two feet wo tasting blood, so you don't have to be in shape or perfectly healthy or whatever. it takes time but you'll get there. -i think the thing that sped up my progress the most was making sure to breathe a few times during the suspensions. it's REALLY difficult cause you're fighting against the vaccuum pressure making your diaphragm collapse, but its v good at building the needed muscles. -it's not about increasing ur max breath capacity, but about slowing down your breaths so you have very fine control over them -take some normal deep breaths between increases. i forget to do this sometimes but it's rlly important just to make sure you're getting all the oxygen you need. -it's all in the core. really. if you lift your diaphragm you'll breathe in naturally w it, and as the yellow cards say, exhaling is more about stopping the diaphragm from just collapsing, slowly letting it down instead. you really don't need to focus AT ALL on your mouth or throat: it's all your core -everyone's body is different. take this at your own pace. SERIOUSLY. this isn't school, there's no award for finishing fastest. listen to your body and take the time you need. i believe in everyone! you got this!

There needs to be a better explanation of what is "suspension", if it's not holding your breath.
@DotsSinging

What about pausing the breath?
@Yesica1993

@@DotsSinging Hm. So if you're not inhaling or exhaling, isn't that the same as holding your breath?
@DotsSinging
@DotsSinging 3 месяца назад
@Yesica1993 The reason we don't say hold is because people tend to hold their breath by closing the glottis, and we don't want that. You could consider the ribs as being held, but that also could cause or be associated with tension.

could just tell me as a begineer we hardly be able to do it naturally may be till 7-8 seconds and further we try to force or suck air in to complete the cycle . So, do we need to just imagine that we are inhaling as per seconds let say 9,10,11. and should not force . It will automatically come by the time?

Use your intercostal muscles by not holding your breath using your throat or mouth, if I'm not mistaken.

Thank you for your video! I still don't get what do you mean by "suspend" here. You say, I should be able to breath and talk. When I was studying singing we'd just hold our breath, but you say, we shouldn't. Do you mean, that the diaphragm should stay down when we suspend? And if I'm neither breathing nor talking during those suspension seconds, what's the difference between suspension and holding my breath?

What are the benefits of this exercises? Apart from being able to sing long phrases, what else does it improve?
@DotsSinging
@DotsSinging 5 месяцев назад
It improving breath flow and management needed for a steady tone and quality. Strengthening the muscles between the ribs and abdomen helps reduce fatigue during long performances. When done right, it brings benefits like less breathiness, a natural volume increase, improved stamina, reduced tension, less pressure on vocal folds, and better overall oxygenation.

I've just finished my first day of this exercise and wanted to keep a journal so here we go, first day (May 12th 2024): i couldn't do more than 12 so I just lefted it there. -- May 21; whooppee, I wasn't in my home country for a week, ı came back today. that's why I couldn't keep it going but I'm continuing right now. May 21; sooooo, the key is breathing in slow and to focus on completely to the exercise. don't think anything else while doing this. cause when I think something else it's unlikely to do. and this way I completed 14 so easily today. May 27; Ugh I hate that i couldn't maintain continuity of this exercise. I did 14 today. But the 14 on the may 21st was easier. I couldn't concentrate well today maybe that's why. May 28; I completed 14 today but it wasn't that easy at 11-12-13-14. and while I'm writing this normal breathing is just brings too much joy to my life xoxo. May 30; left at 13. I didn't pay attention the subtitles before. I was doing the exercise like breat-hold-inhale. and ı guess I am doing wrong? idk June 1; completed 16

One question I have about this exercise: When the inhales are getting very long we can't just release and let the vacuum suck the air in because won't we directly overfill then and not be able to inhale for let's say 15 seconds? The same goes for just letting the air out. Can you explain a bit more maybe?

Soo, I've noticed that although I breathe in much air, I somehow don't have enough air to exhale (during the longer counts) at all. Could it be that I lose air during the Sustain due to untrained breath control? Any solutions?
@DotsSinging

Yes, it could be due to training. Start with a shorter one, like this. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VnClleZAFc4.htmlsi=vlTro3qMFcmR_tDd or try this one is even better ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lNhnpCsoGdQ.htmlsi=8JZ802dpAinsdqKa
