Folding EVA foam mats are simple to construct plus they're quick and easy to deploy.
This collapsible fold up floor is comprised of 24” x 24” x 1/2” interlocking EVA foam floor tiles which have been cut and glued together using 3M Super 77 spray adhesive to form four panels (approximately 22”x 72” each).
Intended to be used in portable ice fishing shelters, this lightweight floor would be suitable for any winter or ice camping tent.
The panels are joined with strips of landscape cloth making the panels simple to fold up and deploy.
I also glued in a carry strap using 2” webbing.
The panels are secured together for transport and storage with a 36” 3M Velcro One-Wrap strap.

Now I know why you cut it square rather then glue all the edge pieces on!

I did something like this with old plywood I had sitting around and my son's old mats from his room except I made it with piano hinges and it folds up like a board game. Once folded it's basically the size of one of the mat pieces and about 8 inches thick. Haven't tried it yet so I'm hoping it works good

Did it all stay together over the season? That super 77 must be strong stuff.

Yep! Heading toward season 3 with it. It’s held up very well.

Do you have 1 layer of panels glued to the landscaping fabric?
@DubbyasDIY
@DubbyasDIY 2 года назад
The landscape cloth is sandwiched between two layers.

Genius! Is the landscape fabric durable? I feel like it would freeze to the ice and tear?
@DubbyasDIY

It’s not Kevlar but it’s really pretty durable and it’s held up very well. Even if it does tear here or there, it doesn’t run like other fabrics, it doesn’t absorb water, doesn’t freeze and it’s literally dirt cheap. I always leave an inch or two of snow on top of the ice so water has someplace to go but EVA foam doesn’t stick to the ice anyway.

@@DubbyasDIY Thanks so much for the fast reply! I just have one more follow-up question... I'm curious as to what your workflow is with your floor when it comes to drilling holes? Are you laying the floor out first before setting up your hub to mark the holes. Then removing the floor, drilling the holes, and clearing the slush away. Then setting up your floor and hub after?

When there are two of us fishing in the 8’ x 8’ hub shelter for the day, I’ll pick my spot, then drill a series of four holes in a straight line using the length of my boot to space them apart then we clear away the slush. I set up the shelter with the holes at one end, anchor it and lay out the 6’ x 8’ floor leaving a 2’ strip where the holes are uncovered.

Oh right, I forgot you mentioned your floor is a 6x8. That makes sense. I just got the new five sided otter pro lodge, and my floor layout is 4 holes down the centre. Laying down the 25 pieces of floor was a bit cumbersome. So I’m really excited to do this. I just need to figure out a way to fold it so it fits in my Honda Pilot haha

If we’re camping or fishing with others in the 8’ x 14’ Monster Lodge, I use 2’ x 2’ x 1” square tiles with holes cut in them to plot out where I want to drill. I’ll drill a few inches to mark the holes, move the tiles so they don’t get damaged then resume drilling the holes. I’ll set up the shelter, lay out the 8’ x 6’ floor mat, then fill in the extra spaces with 2’ tiles. Bear in mind, we get 3 to 4’ of ice up here so that much drilling with a gas auger inside a shelter isn’t a good time. When the ice is that thick or in extreme wind or cold, I’ll drill most of the way through before setting up the shelter, then I’ll finish drilling inside using a slush bucket. This way, my holes aren’t freezing shut while I’m setting up. Using the 2’ tiles gives me more flexibility with regard to hole placement but the big mat definitely saves a lot of setup time. It’s tough to cover every scenario and sometimes the order of operations changes. In extreme wind and/or cold, the only thing you can do is set up the shelter first and work inside. That’s where a slush bucket comes in handy. DIY Slush Bucket post is here. facebook.com/101341882025206/posts/104294815063246/?d=n
