Thanks for doing a gospel lesson Dan!! In the gospel community, this is called a “shout” lick. Here in some predominantly Black American churches, we gospel musicians call this a “Bump” or the act of playing this style would be “bumping”. So, the music director may say, “let’s bump in D flat”, and we would play something like your lesson! There you go!

Hi Dan, this bass lesson is really excellent! And it reminds me of the exact same bass line that James Felix played on a gospel song called "Power in the Blood" by the amazing gospel group "Andrae Crouch and The Disciples." Andrae and his group were the creators of this incredible style of gospel music. And in 1978, they were in London to do a show at the Hammersmith Odeon, where they recorded a live album called "Live in London", and it is one of the best gospel albums of all time. James Felix was the bassist, and on this album he plays his Fender Precision sunburst bass with flatwound strings, and because of his incredible playing and creativity, he received a Grammy. Dan, if you wish to listen to Andrae Crouch's "Live in London" album, you can find a full playlist here on RU-vid. You will not regret! It's full of excellent styles for bass such as: soul, funk, walking bass and disco. Brother Dan, I was once told that I had to be ready to play a "shout run" for 30 min. I'm sure he was exaggerating, but I have played for several minutes. It's a must if one wishes to play gospel bass, live...in church.

Bass players in praise/worship/gospel bands get quite the workout. I did that some years ago and had everything from sight reading, chord charts, mimeographed sheets with chords written on them and the hardest to deal with, ironically, is adapting from a hymnal (written for piano). A player will hone their musical abilities for sure!

I really love gospel, its a lot of fun to play. I found playing to the backing track that my fingers kind of 'wound up' (as the 4x4 community would say) - they got tighter and I started to play harder and had to concentrate on relaxing then it was much better. Travis Dykes is great for gospel lessons as well. I have stiff finger joints so always have to warm up first then it flows better, and this helped a lot. Need some more, Dan. Just saying. :D
