FAST Trout Fishing on the Farmington River West Branch

Ready for a challenge? I gave myself a measly 10 minutes to try and catch at least one trout on the West Branch of the Farmington River, probably Connecticut's most famous trout fishery.
Since the West Branch is a tailwater fishery, it offers unnaturally good trout fishing year-round for this region of the US. But even with that working in my favor, you never really know how it's going to go within just the first 10 minutes of fishing. I'm out here trying to make it happen for you, guys!
My 10-minute Challenge series is all about trying to demonstrate that catching fish in the Nutmeg State doesn't necessarily have to take a whole day of toil or demand that you find 8 hours to be away from your day-to-day obligations. With just an hour, maybe a half-hour... maybe even just 10 minutes... you can get out there and enjoy success.
Like and subscribe if you enjoy the video... it means the world to me!

Love the Channel man its actually been verry theraputic for me lately especially your Farmington videos. so I grew up on the Farmington River literally as close to that River as you can possibly get if we got a bad enough storm sometimes I'd wake up and the river was in my bedroom/ basement the place is called River Run in New Hartford right above the Satan's kingdom anyway I recently moved back to help my mom out with the place one thing led to another and ended staying up there a year instead of the weekend as one does especially when reintroduced with that property but long story shortsh we no longer own that place and i moved back to Cheshire which has been a bit of a bummer and all that just to say I appreciate your channel and it's been really nice to be able to watch the river that I love so much on your channel so often. Luckily I still have some very close friends there so I still get the fish there whenever i want not the same but its some consolation...keep those lines tight 🏞🏞🏞🏞🏞💦🎣

Very nice video and congrats on completing your 10 minute challenge. Looking forward to seeing more fishing videos from you as there arent alot of CT fishing RU-vid channels that stay consistent.

Fyi. There more more tailwater streams in CT. Great video. I enjoyed it. Thanks for the content. Keep up the great work

Hey thanks for mentioning that! Yeah, in retrospect, I definitely misspoke and you're entirely correct. What I was aiming for at the time was pointing out that it's the only major bottom-release tailwater in Connecticut, but I managed to omit that important detail in my unscripted monologue. A professional at work right here.😂

Nice video. I just stumbled upon your channel.. being a native of ct. Torrington to be exact now living here in south central pa. I still miss the good fishing of northwest ct. Thx for making me miss home lol lol. Plus I like the fact you spin fish too. I do both. But prefer spinning. Anyway my home river was the naugy. Miss it

Hey thanks! I actually live in Wolcott, so the Naugy is pretty much right next door to me and I fish it quite often from Naugatuck up through Harwinton. I learned trout fishing on ultralight spinning gear and fished that way for trout for well over a decade before branching out into fly fishing. I do both now and alternate sometimes on a day-to-day basis depending upon the conditions and waters that I'm working. So although I fish with flies almost exclusively now, I have no aversion to fishing them on spinning gear when conditions permit, and do so quite often.

Great channel!! I’m introducing my son to fishing the Farmington, never tried it. Are you in the shore on the riverton section? We’re on Cheshire , any local tackle shops you recommend in that area for lure tips etc?

Nice work.. What kind of camera and Audi equipment are you using?

Over the course of the year since I started the channel (its been just short of that so far), I’ve used a GoPro 4 and even an old GoPro 2. Both have served me just fine in terms of video quality, but it’s rough working with GoPros that aren’t waterproof. In terms of audio, I used only the GoPro’s built-in mic for much of last year, then started using external mics with occasional issues when they would fail in the middle of a session and ruin footage. So although I still use an external mic when conditions require, I’ve actually started to go back to using the built-in mic again. I’ve had folks mention that the sound seems pretty damn good for the built-in mic. And I agree, GoPro did a good job. I think part of it also comes down to the editing. I invest a fair amount of time in normalizing all of the audio in my vids, so it makes everything in the final cut sound a bit more clear and well-balanced across all of the clips.

Connecticut Angler yea that’s what I noticed. Your audio sounds amazing and that’s the one part of film that’s important but often over looked. I have the go pro 5 and 7 but without a mic the audio sucks. I bought an external mic last year but had the same problem that you had. It gave me a lot of issues and also didn’t sound all that great. For normalizing audio do you stabilize it? Or just cut out unfavorable audio clips of wind?
@ConnecticutAngler

@@Handberrydea the way I deal with audio varies, really. Canned "normalize" functions work sometimes, but they're really designed for pretty well-controlled audio recording scenarios with fairly constant volume levels. We just don't get those sorts of studio-type scenarios very often when fishing, y'know? So I generally put the whole story together first. Afterwards I do a thorough pass over the entire thing tweaking clip volumes and applying limiters, EQs and noise reduction as needed. For larger narrative parts, I'll manually tweak the volume along the entire waveform to ensure more consistency. Honestly, it's pretty damn tedious. It's not a part of the editing process that I enjoy very much, but I'm just more pleased with my results when I put the time in.

Connecticut Angler awesome I do a lot of the same stuff. I just ordered an an adaptor so i can connect a mic to my hero 5 and 7. I love the crispy audio that you have. Keep up the good work.

Pretty new to your channel. I’m an avid ct angler myself. Never thrown flys but have an unused assortment. Do you think throwing streamers and woolybuggers is more effective than say, mepps, phoebes, rapalas, etc? Just curious. These are baits I have confidence in.
@ConnecticutAngler
@ConnecticutAngler 4 года назад
I use streamers almost exclusively on spinning gear because I'm switching back and forth between spinning and fly gear constantly. Being able to use the same terminal gear on both greatly simplifies things for me. Not to mention that I tie my own flies, so I can make new streamers quite cheaply (not a big deal if I break several off) and also customize them to my preferences. But beyond that, do I think that streamers are more effective than traditional spinning lures? If you take the full range of trout lures (spinners, small soft plastics, jerkbaits) and put them head to head against the full range of streamers, I'd say the two sets are probably more-or-less equally capable in the right hands. But a quick note: fishing nymphs on spinning gear is something that I think lots of folks never consider, but it can work exceptionally well under the right circumstances. I've caught TONS of fish (mostly trout but even smallmouths) throwing nymphs on spinning gear; everything from a Size 8 stonefly down to a Size 12 midge. So don't be afraid to experiment with flies!
