There are submersible drones too with sonar reflectors or dampeners that can navigate autonomously during targeting phase onto "locked on" targets. They are more cost efficient especially while engaging submarines and surface ships. They have ISR roles/ capabilities and can also swarm into " formational" attack roles as reactive/ responsive mines.

They probably have been inspired by the “barchini”, the italian royal navy small boats, used by the incursori (special operations personnel of the navy) in the Adriatic Sea against the Austrian-Hungarian Navy, during first world war. Similar tactic: they were launched by main ships or departed from Italian coast. At about 250 mts from their target, the sailor blocked rudder and throttle of the barchino and jumped outboard, in the sea. The boats were full of explosive. They were invented by Italian admiral and hero of war, Nazario Sauro. May the victory be with Ukraina: may the spirit of Italian brave sailors be with Ukrainian people!
It'd be dope if it had a "dive" mode where as it's approaching the target, it floods it's ballast tanks and becomes a semi-submersible. Will help hide from targeting MG's and water will protect them. Just have a telescoping antenna
In war, making things to fancy makes things to expensive and raises per unit cost. Maybe make that a future added feature, focus on making what you have more efficient, maybe have one group tinker around with the idea, but have everyone else keep going on what they need to.

Guys, can you please do a piece on just how difficult an offensive is and sometimes it takes months before an actual breakthru happens. If we look at D-Day as an example the allies landed on the 6th June 1944 and yet it was only late Aug - early Sept that Gen Patton achieved a breakthru in Operation Cobra and that's was only after the British & Canadians suffered extremely losses in Caen - bleeding the Germans white - and forcing them to use up their reserves - so when Patton attacked he didn't face nearly the same opposition as he would've months early. This is exactly what UKR is doing and doing very well.

This is the culmination of over 100 years of development of the torpedo boat (originally small high-speed manned boats equipped with one or more torpedoes that could charge cruisers and battleships, fire their torpedoes, and then attempt to turn away before getting caught in the blast). Their adoption (and demonstrated use by the Japanese at Port Arthur and British against the Bolsheviks in the Russian Civil War in the Raid on Kronstadt) radically altered naval warfare by forcing navies to expend large quantities of resources building Torpedo Boat Destroyers (which is where Destroyers today get their name), to escort and screen larger ships from them. Really hard to justify that massive 30,000 ton battleship or carrier if a two-ton motorboat (with half or more of its weight in explosives/torpedoes carried) can sink it by ramming it and blowing up or firing torpedoes into it.

This is old tech, US have thousands of Submarine drones like this... The USS Gerard Ford has 30 escort of Sub drone continuesly guarding the main pack sailing in the West Philippine Sea last week.
Ukraine needs to look into submersible drones, because these surface drones will increasingly be countered by old school machinegun mounts on the Russ ships. They may not be able to fight them with anti-ship missiles and they may be somewhat hard to make out on surface radar, but the good old Mark 1 Eyeball and a MG will limit the success in attacking (military) vessels. Now, if your drone moves under the surface with only a sensor mast, otherwise known as a periscope, breaking through, Mark 1 Eyeball will have difficulty to spot them. Bonus: If you manage to detonate 300Kg of explosives directly under a ships keel or rudder, you will do a heck of a lot more damage than ramming it into the side. Basically a modern, remote controlled torpedo. I wouldnt be surprised if they are already working on that type of design.
These drones need to be modular in purpose - they should additionally have a torpedo that can be ejected , plus a flying drone (5x drones ) that takes off from the hatch of the surface drone then they do a flyover with a surgical strike from different surprise angles
Satellite communication does not work underwater, especially very salty. Other types of communication require an aircraft radio repeater and are subject to detection and jamming. The development and production of this is ten times more expensive. It is better to develop surface zombie drones for ambushes and mass attacks.
