Hey nice people experiencing physical pain and limitations and asking to see our great friend, Bob: Of course we would like to see Bob, but he may not be comfortable in front of the camera. He may need us to be more supportive and less demanding. Sure, Mike is no Bob, but I think he's a terrific addition to the team! The team that does so much for us!

Walter Brennan used the same method when portraying Amos McCoy in the TV series “The Real McCoys” to create that limp he had in his walk. The studio put pebbles in one shoe. You don’t forget to limp when you’re walking on pebbles. 😂

As a certified podiatric assistant, I'd come across marathon runners who have learned to change their gait to toe-to-heel and they report a complete improvement throughout their body also the change has improved their run times compared to the heel-to-toe, but said it took a conscious and continuous effort until it became second nature.

Brad I attended PT with my wife (full knee replacement) and noticed they were very specific about landing heal first. This is counter to the way I learned for running with zero lift soles. Could you comment.... are there different philosophies on this in the PT world? I've had great experience with the approach your teaching here. Appreciate you guys more than you'll ever know. At 42, with spondylolisthesis, I've had a Lot of back pain. I just started 1 to 1.5 mile walks in the morning and found a HUGE reduction in back pain. My doctors didn't suggest that, and I've never heard it anywhere else until this video where you just casually passed it off as common knowledge. Why & How does walking help with lower back pain?

I read the book Bob recommended and they said the reason walking (aerobic activity) helps is that it increases blood flow and lubrication.

Movement helps with almost ALL physical pain, especially as we age. There are a few conditions it can aggravate but almost anything wrong with you can be helped by moving. I have more soreness in my legs from 30 minutes of sitting cross legged on my couch than from 8 hours of heavy labor on my feet at my job.

I tried the zero shoes and had a problem with my achilles tendon. Any suggestions?
@manuela9342
@manuela9342 Год назад
In shoes with high cushioning, there is usually a lot of material under the heel that is slightly wider in order to offer sufficient stability. Depending on how the foot touches down, greater leverage can act on the Achilles tendon and its attachment and put more strain on it. In the case of shoes with no or minimal cushioning, the musculoskeletal system has to take on this task itself. The calf muscles in particular have to do a lot as a natural damper, which is associated with a higher load on the Achilles tendon. The musculoskeletal system must be prepared for this through targeted training and a slowly increasing wearing range of the respective shoes.

Everyone on the internet seems to recommend something different. A friend of mine recently had a physical therapist tell him that he was walking too much on his toes and recommended that he learn to put his heel down first. He also has a spring in one of his lumbar vertebra because the disc was so badly deteriorated. I've found that my heel touches first but that I put very little weight on my foot until I've rolled forward enough that the weight settles on the middle of my foot. That seems to work for me.

I am retired and watch a young man on is daily walks, who walks with his HEEL striking the sidewalk, it looks so unnatural and of course will lead to joint difficulty as he ages. I would love to say something, but not my place. In this cray cray world we live in, he'd tell me to MYOB. Great video - Thanks fellas!!! When walking, heel to toe is more natural. You need to avoid impacting the ground with your bodyweight, when landing your front leg. For that you need to rotate your shoulders and generally your entire spine from the lumbar region & higher - in the opposite direction to the moving forward leg. Simply put: left leg moves forward - at about the same time right shoulder moves forward, but keep yourself straight (and the head keeps looking forward of course). In this way you keep your balance and the front foot touches the surface almost without impact, after that its ready to take more weight. Furthermore, the toe of the front foot should be kept raised until the heel of the back foot rises high from the ground. These two factors (rotation around your axis, and keeping the toe of the front leg raised) maximize the work of the gluteal muscles when walking, prevent you from falling forward, and this relieves the load on the lumbar or lower back muscles (that are easily overworked, if they take the function of gluteal muscles). The arms move along the body, they should go pretty far behind (but not too far back to avoid hunching in shoulders). And without much deviation from side to side. Arms help with balance. If your arms go side to side too much, keep your thumbs aligned with the direction of your walking, until you change your movement stereotype. If walking fast, the same principles apply - don't fall forward, rotate with your spine & shoulders, its just more sped up or with less pronounced balancing. Just think more of conserving momentum, like you're a wheel, and doing a good push with the back foot & toes. Barefoot shoes are great, they build good habits, and allow higher range of motion for the feet, especially noticeable when you push with your back foot. Another thing i think is very relevant to good walking - fixing slouching in the neck and chest. Forward head posture negatively impacts the whole system, the balance, its harder to use gluteal muscles and the lower back gets more work to kinda straighten you out, to keep your head in line with your center of mass.
