I've been riding my fat bikes since 2013 and full time since 2017 and I can tell you this video is spot on! All the info contained here is still accurate in 2019. Fyi, I started out riding them in the snowy north but have since transitioned to the rocky, sandy deserts outside Phoenix, AZ. The extra flotation and traction have saved my hide too many times to count. Blew by a skinny guy on a $10,000 full suspension S-Works the other day not because I was in better shape but because he couldn't equal my traction in the corners. These bikes have made me a better rider for sure but setup is crucial. I am not man enough to spin 4.8 in tires for everyday cross country riding. Tubeless 120 tpi 4.0 is perfect and feel like they have equal float on soft sand to 4.8's but try not to go above 1400 grams. 70 or 80 mm rims are my favorite sizes but depends on what tire you are running. 10 psi works great for rocky, sandy trails where 12 psi is better for smooth and 20 for pavement. Sorry for the lengthy post! Hope you make an updated fat bike video some day.

I've been fat biking since 2013, first on a surly Pugsley and now on a 2015 Salsa Mukluk 2 with Bluto. This video is spot on! Thank you for getting the info out there properly! I started riding mine in the snow and then converted to tubless which had such a dramatic positive effect I switched from my 2013 Stache 8 29er to the Salsa full time. Recently relocated from Idaho down to Phoenix, AZ and I can say the fat bike is even better for desert riding that it was for the snow. Anyway, there are a lot of positive comments on here and all well deserved.

I got a Salsa fatbike a few years ago and love riding that thing here in the Arizona desert. Works so well in the loose dirt, sand and sharp rocks. I'm going to probably get me a Specialized 27.5+ full suspension bike next and sell my Trek 29er hard tail race bike.

Amen to that, Richard! I've also been loving my Salsa on the mostly extremely rocky and often sandy trails here in north Phoenix.

I just sold my Specialized Sirrus Hybrid in favor of a fat tire bike as my daily commuter. So far I don't regret my decision in doing so, I am really hoping to ride year round now due to this upgrade. My route to/from work is a rail trail with several "off road" spurs that I"ve been checking out- these bikes definitely have 100% more fun factor over my hybrid bike.

Not too bad. I actually just sold the fat bike, having purchased one from Bike's Direct, it was difficult to get the perfect fit that I had with my Hybrid bike. It ended up being a bit too big for me. SO, I am saving my money and hopefully going to be getting a Surly Long Haul Trucker.

StormLaker1975 I live in Chile and I bought a fat tire for mountain biking and commuting, simply because the roads here are in very ill repair so it just crawls right over garbage and broken road. Best decision I have made.

I have a 2019 Kona big honzo dL with a + and I love it. Not interested in going back to the other hard tails for trail rides. I am having a hard time with buying a full fat. I want the tire I am just having trouble with sus fork or rigid. I had not heard the salt argument. In MN they lay it on thick but for year round usability I still lean sus fork. Thanks for the info.

Hi, I have a question, I have a normal 650b bike, and its 1.95 wide tire. I see tire manufactures also selling 2.1 width tires, can I buy those and use them? Or do i need new wheels? And how wide of a tire can i fit, please leme know thaks
@hughjassbicyclingchannel9189
@hughjassbicyclingchannel9189 8 лет назад
The 2.1 width should fit on your wheels without a problem. I would try instilling them on the bike before using them however. Make sure they fit in your frame. Your local bike shop can help you with this.

HI good night. I am talking from Santa Cruz -Bolivia. I found a fat bike in a store here. WelI I have a question. These fat bikes have a tire surface Almost smooth but i am not sure if it can Last a lot on the asphalt!? And some places in my city are dirty with some sand or a lot but it is a hard floor of sand. Not as the beaches or deserts. If i buy one , i will need to buy new kind of tires !? I think !?

I am not sure Carlos. Most of our riding is in the snow and on dirt trails. If it were me I would try them out. if they do not work then yes buy new ones. It probably will work fine for what you are describing. Thank you for the question and continue to watch. we have some new fun stuff coming up soon.

Why is the tire so fat is it because you when you ride your bike on the wooden front tires do you know how to really your bike up with a non-motorway and if you do have a motorway how do you how do you change the tires when you slide in the snow that’s not 90 day next week when it snows next week we can get a pass out and in light of bags around and I was up the hills come down with Daniel going to be the best food to watch the phone but doesn’t matter if you do four weeks how how much is the🛹🛹🛹🛹🛹🛹👋😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍🛹🛹🛹🛹🛹🛹🛹🛹😏😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍🧔🏼😍🧔🏼😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍🛹🛹😏🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😍😍😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘🛹

Thanks for the extremely informative video! I have a question. Last year I purchased a Scott Big Jon, and upgraded the fork to a 120mm Bluto. I only just realized there is a weight limit on the bike at 128kg, and with all my gear I'm closer to 148... Indont really care about warranty, but with safety in mid, do you think the frame will be ok? I know how to ride, and can absorb shocks quite well.. using my legs as suspension so as it to rely on the frame too much... but I worry...

Hello, I am thinking of buying a fat bike but i just want to ride on road most of the time. So, should i buy a fat bike or go for a MTB with thinner tires.
@hughjassbicyclingchannel9189
@hughjassbicyclingchannel9189 6 лет назад
A fat bike will be slower on the road. Fat bikes and MTB are both designed for off road riding. That being said, I know a lot of people who ride fat bikes exclusively. My best advice would be to ride a fat bike and a MTB with the 2 inch tires side by side and you choose what you feel will work best for you. Thanks for watching and let us know what you decide.

Yep! I have two fatties so far and love 'em to bits! People love to see them and will often want to talk about them. Heh, pointing at myself, I sometimes start the conversation with, " Fat guy, fat bike! What could be better?! 😁 " The first one I bought was all steel and weighs 42 lbs, but my favourite, now, is my all ally Calibre Dune, and only weighs 29lbs. It's just so much fun to ride! Oh, I weigh 240lbs at the moment, but I plan not to! 😉

You can fill them to the max pressure on the side of the tire. Avoid going over max pressure advertised by manufacturer. Max pressure should help you on your daily commute.

I recommend a low profile knobby for the rear such a V-8 from Vee Rubber. They are getting hard to find but work great and will last you over a year. They also work well in tubless configuration. I found 17 psi in my 4.0 was more than adequate for street use.

On my Mongoose Malus it's a 1x7 speed and 30 tooth x 14-28. It's not low enough geared so I'm adding a 14-34 cassette in rear. This is my first Fattie and an entry level bike. I know these more $$$ Fatties have 2x10 etc gears. I may get there but trying cheaper $300 bike to make sure I enjoy - then upgrade later on... Cheers - David in Texas

which cycle is best MTB or FAT BIKE
@hughjassbicyclingchannel9189
@hughjassbicyclingchannel9189 6 лет назад
The best one is the one thats right for you. Fat bikes are a type of MTB. Fat bikes give you the ability to ride in conditions that you have a difficult time riding a smaller tire MTB on like snow or sand. Fat bikes also give you added traction on normal conditions. The disadvantage to the Fat bike is that it can be slower then traditional MTB tire sizing. Give a Fat bike a try and decide what works best for you.
