On 26 September 2000, waves push the MS Express Samina off course, causing it to hit a group of rocks off Paros and sink, killing 80 people. Subsequent investigation showed that the ferry was on autopilot, with the crew not monitoring the ship's course. They were instead watching an association football match.

That harbor master who put all his energy into speedily organizing the rescue is a true hero.

There was a young man in his 20s. He was serving his mandatory military service. He SAVED LIVES that night. In a call with his father he said. "I can't leave. I Have to help them!" And he drowned. He was a true hero. His name was Vasilis Rahoutis.

First officer Tassos Psychoyios, who had been watching the football on TV when the ship hit the rocks was sentenced to 19 years. The Captain Vassilis Giannakis got a 16-year sentence. Another 3 crew were sentenced to between 15 months and 8 years 9 months for a series of misdemeanours that included abandoning ship without the captain's permission

There is a local phrase in my hometown which says "If you are lazy with the easy now,you deal with the difficult later."

It's frustrating to know that the ship was lost and 80 people died because the watertight doors were left open. It's also possible to have doors that require power to stay open; should the power fail then the doors close automatically.

Damn. Imagine being the man they pulled onto the boat and knowing that, despite being inches away from safety, you still could've died if it wasn't for two people refusing to let go when everyone else wanted them to.

It’s sad about the woman who couldn’t swim and drowned in front of the pair. It’s true about drowning people though. They will latch on to anything, anyone and not let go. In their panicked state, they don’t realize that they’re causing their rescuer to drown as well. The best way to handle a drowning person is to throw them a buoy and keep them as far as way from you as possible.

Then 14 years later a similar but even more tragic and deadlier sinking happened on the Sewol ferry in South Korea

You don't WAIT for someone to tell you what to do. You calm yourself, put on a life jacket, get into a raft, think as clearly as possible. Focus. The panic can kill people as much as the disaster.

So after binge watching all the plane crashes, I think, well this is a nice little change. So, so wrong.

They should at least let 2 crew members monitor the ship's movements while in autopilot mode but nooooooo, all of them have to watch a TV show. Seriously?! What in the world are they thinking? Because of that, the ship sailed off course, hits the rocks, then sank to the bottom.

One common denominator in most ship sinkings is as the ship lists more than 20 degrees the life boats become impossible to launch. You would think the naval architects who design these ships could come up with a new and better way of launching the life boats.

If you thought the crew's actions on the Express Samina were negligent, search up the crew's actions on the MTS Oceanos.

Those girls who pulled that man into the boat, good on them. You don't just watch someone die without doing something about it. You really get to see who's who when there is a disaster or a tragedy. It really forces ppl to show who they are. As good as some are, many are not.
