I enjoyed both your vlogs when you raced each other around Scotland in opposite directions so could you both, with your sidekicks, do an explore / pub crawl together? Where could it possibly go wrong!
The first locomotive you pointed out at the station is a Swedish design built under license in Romania by Electroputere. The second one you pointed out was purchased second-hand from the French national railway company (SNCF); it was built by Alsthom. Both designs date from the mid-1960s.
The market you were looking for at 12:27 is about 400 yards away, in the opposite direction you were walking to. It's tucked away, and while the market is huge, you can only reach it through a series of small alleyways. The market's been there for about 150 years, and the roads feeding into it were never upgraded. Essentially, from where you were at 12:27, you need to turn around and walk about five minutes, past the hotels and the railway ticket agency, turn right at the huge building shell that's under (perpetual) reconstruction that's across the street from the new skyscraper, and then left on the first alleyway. You'll end up in a huge, partly open-air market.
Brill video Scott, me & my Mrs were in Bucharest last month, I enjoy the local cuisine. We went to the Aqua park there also and toured about the city. Loved when you asked Blair what he was watching and he said "Steve Marsh" You face was a picture. 😂 Look forward to the next video.
Love the bit where Blair warns you of the step getting on the train - my son exactly: "Dad watch out for the step". How do they think we function when they are not around 😮
Great! 🙂 11:44 this is former French SNCF BB 25572, built in 1971 by Alstom. Regio Călători bought 13 of class BB 25500 second hand, together with fitting RIO sets and other classic French vehicles, like Caravelles. 23:30 if you want a classic night train from Romania to Hungary try to catch IR 406 "Corona" Brașov 18:51 - Budapest-Keleti 9:55 (currently, it is being rerouted because of works on the Cluj - Oradea line), it still has an old Hungarian sleeper and couchette car built in the GDR plus dining car. Or catch an inner-Romanian sleeper (there are several long routes) some are still second-hand old western German DB cars.
I've posted this comment before as you complain about the noise in every hotel you go to. Download some ambient noise to your phone ( thunderstorms ,rivers, train sounds) and play it through a Bluetooth speaker or your phone itself then you can override external noise with that. I use it at home and everywhere I go. Well done treating your lad to this trip , a nice adventure for him.
Will add to this to make it even simpler, if you have a music app like Spotify RU-vid Amazon or Apple if you sign up to their service you can download ambient sounds from there, then simply play whichever sound one you choose on a loop all night. I prefer river sounds myself.
There are specialised white noise/ambient sound apps too which do the job without needing Spotify etc. I've been fortunate enough to never need them in a hotel but they are also very good at blocking out annoying people who talk on their phones for the entire length of a train journey!
Shopping malls are a great way to have what to choose to eat in another country because there's always a 'help-yourself' food company in the store. Very handy if you're not sure what to eat!
thank you simon, as a romanian i also preffered those 2 cities ,but last year i visited Caras-Severin and found i like it better, well not the cities there but the nature
Great video.good to see you with your son Scott.. Good company for you...I know you take us on all your trips but nice to have a physical body around...look forward to next one.love em all...🤩🍺🍕
Bucharest to budapest overnight train, did that in october, got a free upgrade to first class, which meant a private sleeper. only problem was we lost 2 hours overnight due to delays, and terminated at bekescsaba, and then had to switch trains to budapest, stay with a friend in the city overnight, then come back to bekescsaba the next day because that's where my fiance is from, she just hadn't arrived yet lol! we must have just missed each other in bucharest as well, I was there last month also :)
Scott I was in Georgia in the US about 10pm I heard a ruckus out in the hall. I opened the door to find a naked girl standing in the hall. I asked if she wanted to step inside I gave her a towel to put on. About 10 Minutes later her friend was yelling for her in hall. She did not want to go out in the hall. I called down stairs told them of what happened. They sent security up I had the girl go with them. Next morning was quite. Interesting… The person who was looking for the girl was at a loss. I just looked like I knew nothing. 16:33
Nice video Scott and Blair. Could I ask you a favour Scott? When you post currency conversions, could you include EUR alongside GBP and USD? Many thanks.
that railway museum, it said on the door it is open Wed to Sun so that is why it was closed. If you ever visit Bucharest again, I suggest you try just walking around some of the old neighborhoods with houses, in Cotroceni area, around Dorobanti area, near Universitatii square and so on, those are the remnants of pre Soviet Bucharest. That Mall you went to is a mall not far from where I live, the first real mall in Bucharest, there's some much bigger ones now. As someone born and still living in Bucharest, the old town is the worst part. Also, near the main attractions in Brasov/Bran area, there's a really beautiful area most foreigners don't go to, way more beautiful than Bran, it's the area right next to Bran, the mountain villages on the hills(Magura, Pestera, Fundata, Sirnea), easily accessible with a taxi and there's a lot of nice walks and hikes around Zarnesti(there's a really old train from Brasov to Zarnesti btw). CFR trains aren't worth it generally if there's a different option( the private operators have half the price for at least the same if not slightly better comfort). Oh and everything(CFR and private operators) can be booked online, CFR has an app, the others on the sites. If you'd like towards Hungary, there's the Astra Trans Carpatica train to Timisoara that is modern and nice, then surely there's connections)
One city I have not visited yet though I have been across the country from Arad to Brasov back in the mid 90’s. I do love Ibis hotels when abroad. They are great value and you know they will be of a good or better standard. After visiting Krakow and Prague earlier this year I am also using them on my trip to Tallinn, Riga and Warsaw later this year. Shame they are not available in the U.S. when I travel there.
There are some great places to visit in Bucharest. I loved it there, people were friendly, the food was good and there is a lot of interesting architecture. I didn't see any footage of Bucharest Old Town - which I would definitely recommend. Something I did miss were the dinosaurs - must see those next time. Scott/Blair were unlucky with the weather.
Went there on a cheapo Wizzair flight last November. I found there wasn't too much to see and do (fooled a few people with a selfie by the mini Arc de Triomphe) tho I did find a few craft beer places. I wonder if it livens up in the summer?
If you take the overnight train from Bucharest to Budapest you miss the beautiful views of the mountains of Transylvania. It is a lot better to travel to Brasov first, spend a day and a night there (well worth a visit anyway), and then take a 7 a.m. train from Brasov to Budapest.
I have a video about the Night Train on my channel if you're interested Scott. The beds in these older cars are very comfy. Better than NightJet in my opinion.
Scott you could also consider the Dacia Express. I'm doing this trip in late September going from Vienna to Bucharest which runs daily and back which you might consider as well. It also has sleeper car attached as well. You do have the option to book it for single occupancy but with that it comes at a price.
I went to Romania last October. Flew from Birmingham with Wizzair - not bad for a budget airline. I cut short my time in Bucharest because it was a bit hit and miss - things closed without notice, quite dirty and scruffy in places and downright scary in others. Once out of Bucharest, though, Romania was fantastic. Beautiful, friendly, amazing architecture, scenery, food, culture and wildlife - saw my first bear in the wild. I would definitely go back but give the capital a miss.
@@KartoffelHundin Essentially, I would say "stay in the tourist areas of the city". I went to Piaţa Obor, a huge market. It was lovely, interesting and everyone was friendly. I decided to walk back to the city centre and had to go through an area where five men followed me and (appeared to) get reinforcements, as two other guys ahead, grossed the street and started to come towards me. I jumped on a tram before they converged on me and they began yelling at me as the tram pulled away. The old town at night feels like you have to keep your wits about you. I saw pickpockets and locals scamming tourists. I stayed in the north of the city in an area called Baneasa. Nice and safe as well as handy for the airport. Everywhere I went out of Bucharest felt very safe.
@@Zdamaneta I know. I have travelled a lot in Europe and the USA. Bucharest felt particularly menacing in places, though. Overall, it has been my least favourite city destination to visit. I WOULD go again, but I would be better prepared and spend less time in the city itself.
Blair inherited the bendy thumb! This is the funniest Scott video ever! The dinosaur park must be run by the Willie Wonka people... I've learned that Bucharest is possibly lovely but not on a Monday! I don't think I'll be adding it to my bucket list...
When are you going to do Ukraine? I have been there three times the last two years. Its a hard journey, 12 to 24 hours depending on where you go. It may be too much for an old timer such as yourself 😜
I guess I will be 25 minutes late to my meeting today... what a timing to see that upload lol. 4:30 ♪♪♫They call it Mellow Yellooooow♫♫♪( Quite rightly)
Really great you being with your son. What career is he interested in? I was always going somewhere with my boy. Now he's 34, married with baby son and although we live in different countries, we chat every day!
I have to say as soon as I heard you were there on a Monday - I thought ALL the museums will be shut! and they were. I am interested in Romanian language as it is a Romance language so seeing how much as someone who has lived and worked in France and Italy could understand and I was pleasantly surprised though the grammatical endings were a problem. How did you find the language?
Thanks for sharing, I've just come back from Bucharest, had a great time. 04:58 the RED ALARM string in the shower should NEVER be tied up, it should hang to the floor, if you collapse in the shower you should be able to reach it at ground level. Very bad practice.
Scott, I love it when you bring your son along. It is great to see you both spending some quality time together, making awesome memories. Blair is very blessed to be able to travel around with you.
great video, I hate to say this but ALL museums are closed on a Monday. Also, when you were looking for the "market", it was literally on the other side of the row of shops you guys were walking past.
I was a bit puzzled why you were wanting to look at the Bucharest to Budapest sleeper train, as I thought I remembered seeing another video of you on that journey. Brilliant video guys, hope you undertake more trips together 👍
Hi, yes I've done that route before, but it was a different train. It was shared accommodation with only a couple of stops. This one would be a challenge due to the huge number of stops, but I've checked and it can be booked for one person for around £124. Still a bit pricey, but def on my bucket list (again).
blair has great taste i love steve marsh, but hat look blair gave you later with smile and total respect, makes me miss my son more he lives in minniapolis usa and im here in uk at this time.
