Feather Plucking and Mutilating is something that cockatoos and many parrots do. It's important to be proactive and find the cause of your bird's undesirable behavior. The first step should always be a trip to see an avian vet ruling out any medical issues.
It's important to always keep a close watch on your parrots to notice any signs of illness.

This was helpful, thank you! I am currently volunteering at two different parrot rescues and one of the rescues is a little more rundown and they put boxes and nesting material at the bottom of the cages and encourage nesting because they said it helps them not pluck, but I see hormonal behavior and I'm not comfortable with it. I plan to adopt one of the birds from there that chose me and he's so sweet and I can't wait to get him home and get him in a good routine. 👍

I like to signal certain parts of the daily routine by singing to my birds.... I have a rescue who suffers from anxiety. I have special songs I sing only before I turn lights on or off, before I take covers off in the morning, before moving cages and at bed time. This helps them understand what's coming up next. I figure they signal to each other with song, right? By the way, I am the world's worst singer, only my boys appreciate my tunes. But when I sing the lights off song, my corella will look at the lamp. He knows and can predict what's coming next and doesn't get startled.

I rescued a 16 yr old Cockatoo in Jan. of 2019. My first bird. She belonged too a friend of mine who left her alone for weeks on end, only time she saw someone was every other day when me or someone else would go over too feed her. I spent some time with her cause I felt sorry for her. I did not much about birds at that time. I taught her too say my name and a few other words. One day I went over and fed her, let her out of the cage for a bit and played with her. She did not know how to play, much. I left and she absoutly busted my heart into peices when I was leaving she kept calling my name. I cussed myself all the way home for teaching her my name! Well when My friend came home the next time she told she was going to sell her. Take her to a pet shop if she had too. I thought about it for a few days and decided I was not going to let that happen. I decided I was gonna get her. I told my friend I wanted her but did not have the money, I told her several times over the next week and finally she ask me if really wanted her I told her yes and I brought her home that night. I had started learning about birds Cockatoos when I first found out she was gonna get rid of "Peaches" I am still learning but I would not ever give up Peaches she has became my baby girl and companion. But I need advice on getting her too eat veggies. All she eats are bird seeds chips pizza and peanut butter on bread, and bannanas thankyou

Hi Pet Parrot Lovers, Our male Eclectus (Mambo) has been living with us for 20 years now (Australia). We hope this feedback "Comment" helps other pet parrot owners, as this is why and how we have had no difficulty with Mambo 🦜plucking his feathers: 1) Early in Mambo being our young, hand-raised, tame pet parrot family member we noticed that Mambo would intentionally bath itself when given its morning fresh clean drinking water 💦 (fresh water also given late afternoon before his tea), but he would choose to bathe himself only once weekly, and would also get our attention too! 2) We early read that the Eclectus parrots' original natural habitat is the Tropical Rain Forests of North Queensland and the Tropical Highland Rainforests of PNG (Papua New Guinea), & some of the tropical Pacific Islands. That’s when we thought that they would live with showers of rain 🌧 in their original tropical rainforest habitat, and we put this together with Eclectus’s also being a very high DANDER bird that Mambo would probably enjoy, at his chosen time to bath, with us also giving him a gentle shower spray with an indoor pot plants water 💦 spray bottle. Well yes indeed! Mambo LOVES his weekly bath 🛁 plus light water-spray shower all over and under his body -- he even spreads his wings wide so we can spray under both his wings and both sides of his chest. Mambo prefers this weekly wash in the morning, and he happily chats away after his bath and water spray. So pet parrot lovers, our take on why Eclectus parrots 🦜 (& some other parrots too!) have a reputation for being feather-pluckers is NOT necessarily a nervousness condition, nor consequent to a health issue or boredom either, but rather with their high dander skin-replacing body, the build-up of dander becomes irritating to them. Thus the scratching and pecking at their irritated skin (with feathers coming out while trying to relieve themselves of the dander skin irritation) is why parrots understandably scratch & peck their skin. I would be scratching my skin too if I didn't shower daily, and I don't even have a high-dander skin!🤗 And yes, the stress-factor to the parrot with the DANDER irritation can understandably impact their general health and wellbeing, and happiness! This DANDER skin irritation probably adds to bad behaviour, like screeching, etcetera. We have 3 pet parrots, and they have never had the problem of plucking feathers. They all live indoors in our home with us to keep them safe from outside predators (snakes, rats, and predatory birds - e.g. Butcher Birds, Magpies). I have had pet birds most of my 70 year life - and approximately 100 racing pigeons as a young teenager and belonged in the latter 1960’s to the Brisbane QLD Racing Pigeon Federation (the best I got was a 3rd place 🥉 in a long distance pigeon race back to their loved home lofts -- birds love an easy resort-lifestyle and security). Enjoy wonderful pet birds, as they love human company too! Cheers, Garzo 🎶🦜- see in the RU-vid Channel “ILLUSTRA MEDIA” documentary entitled “FLIGHT: The Genius of Birds” Trailer on RU-vid, and with a Google search, the complete documentary is available for purchase on DVD 📀, it’s an awesome documentary. Enjoy. 😃🕊😄

April, PLEASE give me advice!!! I have a 2 yr old lovebird who has been plucking and now is mutilating. We have been to two different vets and we have ruled out medical issues. He lives in a large flight cage (same size as my conures) with lots of toys, forging and he gets lots of time out of the cage with me daily. I'm really scared because I just had to switch jobs. I have a new schedule where some days I work afternoons and some days evenings. They are used to a set routine and me only working evenings! What can I do??? I hafto work!! 😢 its so scary, everytime I leave I feel so guilty. And now their routine is going to be all messed up on top of it all 😥😥😥😥

I've got a white umbrella cockatoo that has for the first time begun mutilating herself. I woke up this morning and found blood under her wings. She's 25 years old, and has never done this before. I'm at home all day, and let her sleep in my bed all day and all night, which she loves. But it sounds like you're saying nesting can cause this problem. Are you suggesting I should keep her in her cage and prevent the nesting?

Well unfortunately not all of us have that luxury of a spare/separate room and i feel kinda sad about it coz then i wouldif placed my bird in there if its due to noise.Anyway also Vets are super expensive but going to try make a plan:( and i know what you thinking...why did u get a bird if u cant afford continued Vet care, well its becoz i love my bird and get her the best toys, big cage and so forth. She recently started to pluck so for now i can try change her diet,i make sure i move her toys around and replace them eventually.Usaully she molts just like any other bird but this time it hasnt stopped and i notice it under her wings.I am obviously worried but gonna try see what im able to do for her....i am experienced with the type of bird i have coz i had the same before and they didnt behave this way makes me really sad,i do my best getting the best toys im able to give her where i stay its hard though...anyway not trying to gain sympathy just telling my situation in a nut shell.I also let her out often as im doing work from home.Seems like she constantly wants and needs attention haha shes so sweet but it gets frustrating sometimes i love her to bits

Your birds are all cute and I am lucky that my bird doesn't pluck but my friends bird does. I was wondering what feather do not grow back. because since my friends has him he doesn't fly and he falls to the ground a lot. It scares me that he might have some brain damage. He used to fly before and he was given to my friends when he was 5.

Question?--is the plucking issue more prevalent with a female bird because of the stronger need to nest and lay eggs??

I am curious. I was on cancertutor.com and studying MSM on there for cancer treatment. It said that our soils are deficient in sulfur (and many micronutrients) due to artificial fertilizer being used for so many generations. Farmers only replace NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) which are the macronutrients. But for optimal food, you need the micronutrients too. In fact, sulfur is the third highest mineral in the human body. So...if food is deficient. You have to supplement. Anyway ..amazingly.. MSM supplementation helps with hair, fingernails, and.... Feathers!!!! So our birds also eat our deficient food. So maybe they are deficient too. Anyway, make sure your birds are getting sulfur along with their other vitamins. Put it in their spring water (don't use tap it has nasty stuff, and that is another important issue I won't go into here). MSM (sulfur) might help with feather issues. Maybe not feather-destructive disorder, but maybe there is a link there. Who knows? I realize this is a long shot. Check out cancertutor.com and the MSM topic.

What about CBD oil to rub on her skin??? It saved my crow from premenent warm nude belly situation. Dear crow was checked for reasons but it was found to be mentaly. It took 7 months to regrow fully. She stopped plucking. She plucked years... her legs still nude but the chest that was nude and was told by avi vet that it wont grow, but it did. Victoria IS SUPER LUCKY TO HAVE YOU!!!!!
