Excellent answers to all my questions I too have. As for aging? I am a 65 year old triathlete with a muscle disorder. I have come a long way from being diagnosed with it but the biggest thing is "YOGA". My doctor says how can we fit that into a pill for all the non believers. I know that eventually my age will catch up, but until then I still train to have fun in the sport.

Welcome back, Mark! I swim with masters and I find that it works for me the best. I don't mind working on other strokes. But there's no boredom, a lot of camaraderie and friendly competition 🏊‍♀️

With regards to the pool swimming, I’d argue that you don’t skip the sets on other strokes. I recently got massive pbs on mid distance freestyle from working hard on my medley swimming. In particular my non free strokes. The benefit of enhanced feel of the water from br, more body rotation from working on my bk, and the pure power from my fly can’t be underestimated. Of course I do freestyle threshold sets too, but I don’t limit myself to that.

For the older gentleman who was asking about performance and management of muscle mass in his 70s. As a Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), Specialist, I would recommend that you get a good evaluation from someone competent in HRT to assess what you still might be capable of with the right treatment. I have seen people in their sixties and seventies put on reasonable muscle mass with the proper nutrition and supplementation, especially if they were already active and experienced like yourself. No, you wont make massive gains but you will be above average and thats saying a lot as you are preparing for your eighties where things can really start to go south.

For the last one, swimming in a pool with 4/5 people in a pack sharing two lanes could be an idea. I saw a french athletes doing that as recommended by his coach, swimming in someone else's wave, doing turn close the the walls etc ... That looked like a really down to earth solution to replicate a triathlete's swim. Not open water for sure but at least you have the sentation of having someone up front or in your hips. Seems great for getting used to the feeling.

Great advice for OW swimming - familiarisation is key, regardless of whether its the lake you will race in. OW practice is 1,2 & 3 on the list.

Thank you. I hate weights but looks like I will need to embrace it (them); will start tomorrow. Thumbs up to Pilates.

#gtncoachescorner Which is more important: high intensity or race pace intervals? I race middle and long distance (therefore zone 3 being my race pace) and I am split on whether I should do VO2max or zone 3/tempo efforts leading up to my races. I have 2 days a week with intensity, one of them is a threshold day and I can’t decide what the other day should be. On one hand, based on the research and also my own experience, VO2max intervals lead to a greater improvement in fitness compared to zone 3 efforts. However, it is also an accepted fact that specificity is the most important training principle which would mean I should do zone 3 instead of VO2…

Last year i did 3 sprints, 3 weekends on the trot and the Saturday before the last race on the Sunday i did a charity swim, definitely no tapering but had brilliant crack and was just doing them for the fun of it Did find i had a great end of of the season with my races being more spread out Had 8 races in total last season, all for fun

I think A-B-C race strategy is a really good thing and C-races are going to benefit your race and transition experience.

#GTNCoachesCorner In HK we are not allowed to use tools in public pools. I can't make the swim squad timings due to work - should I just swim or try use tools in the sea (It's Asia - not many waves)

Hi #gtncoachescorner , what is the ideal way to integrate a family vacation into an ironman training program? #agegrouperproblems. I'm in a 22 week, 80/20 program set to race at the end of September. I started the program 24 weeks ahead of the event knowing I'd have a family vacation and a volunteering trip thrown in over this time period. Are there some tips about the best way to adjust anything like the weekly periodization, types of workouts right before I leave, or workouts that'd help me get back into rhythm of the program?

#askgtncoachescorner How can I work out if a bike upgrade that's meant to save me watts will actually make a difference, and by how much? After years of doing triathlon, I'm finally considering getting a rear disc wheel for my tri bike. The manufacturer's website suggests it will save me about 10W compared with my current setup (45mm rims). I recently rode an IM 70.3 cycle PB (on a very flat course, in perfect weather conditions) riding at average 189W for 2hr 27. Before I spend all my money, it would be good to know how much faster a disc wheel would have helped me go? Thanks, and thanks for making such great content - I'm a big fan of the channel!

#gtncoachescorner Hey GTN. I am an average 27 year old age grouper who has their first iron distance triathlon in July (Roth). This will be my only A race of the year. Considering this is my first time attempting this distance, how long do you recommend someone like me take after the race to fully recover. I have no races planned afterwards and really just want to make sure my body is fully recovered. Cheers!

#GTNCoachesCorner Why do some olympic distance Pros (eg Leo Bergere, Taylor Knibb) who are set to compete in the olympics this year as favorites, do middle distance races at this time of the year? What's the benefit for them towards the olympic distance?
@marcuswills6569
@marcuswills6569 13 дней назад
I don't think there is any benefit, just an opportunity to qualify for another World Championship as 70.3 WC 2024 is the back end of the year and out the way of other major races. Top Olympic distance ITU athletes wouldn't need to change their training plans for a 70.3, they can just roll in and out of it with minimal disruption.

Swimming in open water, people splashing about, murky water, choppy water are the least of my worries I live in Australia, I worry about sharks, crocodiles and stinging jellyfish. Every time I put my head down I hear the Jaws music. 😵‍💫😵‍💫
