The checklist used by Prometric (located on their website) that the evaluators use to grade FL CNA applicants does not list checking the ID band prior to feeding, so it is not graded during the test. It is, however, a good practice to do so BEFORE you give the resident their tray to prevent food allergies or specific health conditions related to diet. You may check the ID if you like, but it is not required for the test. Good luck and thanks for the question!

Yes, you must wash your hands before and after every skill, just like in real life. This is a VERY important aspect of patient care, to prevent the spread of pathogens from one patient to another. At the end of the skill, after you have fed the patient and encouraged them to eat at least 2 ways (are you sure you are done? one more bite? can I get you something else? let me know if you are hungry later. - pick 2), throw the disposable items away and leave the empty food tray where you found it.

Yes, you offer a sip of water before feeding and every 3 to 4 bites while feeding. Ask the patient what they would want next when feeding multiple types of food (a meal). We are only there to be the pateint's arms...let them call the shots! Good luck on the exam!

You are in the room - why do they need the call button? If they need anything, you are right there (the whole purpose of the call light). You can remain in the room without giving them the call light first. At the end of this skill, I pointed out the call light (lying on the bed next to him) which is appropriate when leaving. The patient doesn't have to be HOLDING the call light! They just have to know where it is and how to call for help, should they need it.

It is actually hard to be a "patient" for this skill. Eating is the first task you become independent at (holding a bottle, eating cheerios from a high chair) and losing this independence really affects you on a deep psychological level. It is essential to be upbeat and encourage the patient to eat despite this reaction. Sometimes being silly with them (respectfully) can help them overcome their reservations. But not for the test. Be professional for the test. :) Good luck!

Just remember the three principles of safety, patient's rights and infection control. Be careful watching videos, they are not all performed according to current Florida state standards and they may confuse you. I would speak to my nursing instructor and ask for tutoring or specific instructions that must be followed. Good luck!

For this skill, you should not close the privacy curtain because eating is a social event. Isolating a patient for meals by closing the privacy curtain can cause them to not eat well. However, this point is no longer graded on the exam. Hope this helps! Good luck!

The patient's hands do not need to be cleaned after feeding (since they have not touched the food or their body fluids). The hands need to be cleaned before feeding for ritual (it stimulates the appetite in many cases) and this is demonstrated at 00:18. Good luck!

You should not wear gloves while feeding patients unless it indicates to do so on the care plan. Gloves give off an odor that will interfere with appetite and cause the patient to not eat well. Gloves should not be used routinely when feeding. Good luck!

is it ok to put the document sheet on the table beside the tray with the patient food?
@4yourcna
@4yourcna 11 лет назад
Washing your hands at the end of the skill and then documenting is sufficient. You do not have to re-wash your hands. You will never get everything done in a clinical setting! You want to clean your hands at the end, before documenting (where you are touching a clean pen) and you will be washing again at the beginning of the next skill.

And the call light is never considered clean because patient's in bed will scratch what itches and then handle the call light. The patient may use a bedpan or urinal and then use the call light to have you empty it. The call light is not clean (neither is the privacy curtain). You should wash your hands at the end of the skill after opening the curtain and giving the patient the call light to ensure you have clean hands when leaving the room.

Hello, I have a few questions please. My first question is when feeding the resident shouldn't one wipe the residents mouth after each bite? Lastly , during testing should one document the residents eating percentage? or is that not included; since its not done on the video.
@4yourcna
@4yourcna 8 лет назад
+Manoah Durandis These videos are demonstrated according to current state standards. You do not have to wipe the resident's mouth after every bite unless the resident has visible food or fluid on the outside of the mouth. Think of your eating habits...you probably do not wipe your mouth with a napkin after every bite. Remember that every patient is an individual and will have different abilities, needs and limitations. Do not assume that all persons being fed will drool or not be able to contain the food within their mouth. There are many patients who may have a progressive neuromuscular disease, or paralysis, or arthritis, or Parkinson's or muscle weakness from a stroke, or even just broke both arms that may need assistance with feeding but are able to chew and swallow just fine. For the test, your patient is able to chew and swallow (as long as you feed them properly by giving them time to chew and swallow, not overloading the spoon and offering frequent drinks), which is demonstrated in the video. Documentation is discussed verbally and demonstrated clearly beginning at 3:04 and ending at 3:30 on an actual documentation sheet very similar to that used in the exam. Good Luck!

Do you not have to close privacy curtain for feeding?
@4yourcna
@4yourcna 8 лет назад
No. Eating is a social skill; most people gather in groups and socialize while eating. Closing the privacy curtain will isolate the patient and decrease oral intake. This is the only skill that you will not close the privacy curtain for. Hope this helps! :-)

How do you know the amount the patient ate
@4yourcna
@4yourcna 7 лет назад
Please refer to the newest videos for updated skills performance! Documentation is based on percentages. If they ate about half of the food offered, then you would document 50%. If they refused, you would document 0%. If they ate it all, it would be 100%! If they ate more than half but not all, it would be 75%. If they ate some, but less than half, you would document 25%. The percentage is always based on what is on the tray - the starting amount of food. How much of their food on their tray did they eat? Since the test will only offer them a single-serve cup of pudding and water, and the "patient" for the exam will be instructed to only eat 4 bites then refuse, they will be eating less than half, so you would document 25%. You will also estimate the amount of water they drank by paying attention to what they started with and what is left in the cup at the end of the meal. Hope this helps!
