Welcome to the Scrapyard. Space Engineers where what you can't build, you must find.

I subscribed just before his first survival series in 2017, after watching his earliest tutorials. I don't know how many new players I've directed from Reddit and elsewhere to his various tutorials, but it's a lot. It's benefitted the community greatly that newbies could be brought up to speed on the basics quickly, freeing up our time for 1-on-1 help.

As you found, there is no constant speed you can set the telehandler's pistons to get a vertical lift. The length (L) you need, (taking fully retracted as 1), based on the lift angle (A) is: L = 1 / cos (A) Which means the extension rate is going to be dL/dt = ( tan (A) / cos (A) ) dA/dt

Hey Splitsie, Love the build, the asthetics of your builds always put mine to shame, but a few mechanical suggestions that might help: The lifting hinge being further back on the vehicle doesn't make it any less likely to tip forwards with a heavy load. The only things that matters are the distances from the center of mass, to the front wheels vs front wheels to the load, and the mass of vehicle and load. COG of telehandler ~1.3m behind front wheels x 7350kg = 9500ish COG of battery ~2.5m in front of wheels x 3800kg = 9500ish, hence needing gyro to stop it tipping If you bring the forks back 1m closer to the front wheels, you could lift 65% more weight... or the same weight with a safely factor of 1.65 :D With that in mind, it would be a lot more stable if you remove one piston, inset the charge connector, and get the 'forks' as close to being inline with the front wheels as possible, or even slightly behind and have the wheels straddle either side of the load. Also, don't extend the pistons when raising the arm, as moving the mass backwards is a good thing - you can always extend it manually if needed when stacking the shelves. A shorter arm also gives the lifting hinge more leverage so will bounce less.

Hey Splitsie, an idea that might be worthwhile, is removing that lil ramp at the entrance to your wherehouse, expand a flat section along there for manuvering, then creating that shallow gradual ramp you did before, might help with transporting scrap, and maneuvering.

Two suggestions for the little lifter - 1)add a rotor just before the mag plate, to let you rotate an item (let's say, a thruster) to face the right way mid lift; 2) articulate a mid point in the piston arm, so you can extend into an area (like the top of a roadway) horizontally with the last piston or two, while the main triangle provides height. Loving the series, very inspired ~

Nice, a telihandler is good. Real world the boom is down one side with the cabin next to it. Could use the dual hinge at the end, use a connector pointing down with the magplate on the outside face. Poke out for connector and grab normally otherwise. Also stiff suspension at the front will lessen the bounce lifting

I'd also drop the front mag plate with a half block so that when the boom is down the mag plate scrapes the floor (increase suspension height for clearance) and then have the 2 hinges work together so the load stays horizontal, just like the real thing.
@ric0h777

Unless you have one of those dinky telehandlers, the boom is center of the machine (look at a telehandler from the top). If the boom was off-center, then it would topple over as the weight would be all on the one side of the machine.

Once made a forklift thing for tight spaces, one trick I did was: All 4 wheels steer, 45 degrees spaced to draw out a circle cleanly. Your lift truck looks OK for that. Timer set to reverse the throttle of the 2 left wheels. So, when timer is triggered, it literally spins in place, directly, by during and driving forward (counter clockwise) reverse (clockwise) PS: can also link the arm hinges as a group, one of them reversed, so as the arm raises the hinges match, keeping the 'load ' level

I had that last idea as well. If you want to keep the load level, just have the front hinge reverse the rear hinge. You can still set up manual controls for it so you can tilt down for smaller stuff.

If the front hinge moves opposite to the rear hinge at the same rate (times -1) the forks/pallet will stay parallel to the ground. It could also use a light at the end of the boom to act like a light tower.

Mix of recommendation and suggestion. Recommendation: Get some of the scrap palletised before you get distracted again now that you have a forklift equivalent. Also adjust the entrance way if you plan on driving forward in, though I would recommend reversing. Suggestion: Make 2 types of pallets. Mag-plate shelf/pallets should be for things like thrusters, I gave an example a few episodes ago of a 9 or 5 small block wide pallet with merge blocks, but regular blocks should also be fine. 2 blocks high to get the lifter a good spot. Use those for thrusters, computers, that sort of thing. At the floor height should be small block large connector, conveyor converter for the H2 tanks, batteries and engines. Things that would give a variable trade value. Full H2 tanks and engines are more valuable than empty, and you can charge up batteries safely.

1:02:12 Small grid hinge placed on a flat surface. Bar of blocks on top going out 10 blocks going the same direction as the hinge bend. Place a small battery on one end and then a small container full of stone on the other end of the bar. Then turn the hinge off. Whichever side is heavier will fall. Easy level balance.
@Pystro
@Pystro 5 месяцев назад
This, but you'll want the heavy blocks below the hinge axis. I'd build the hinge on a 2-3 blocks high pedestal, and "hang" the heavy blocks 2-3 blocks below the bar. (Where "hang" means have a 90° bend down at the ends of the bar made from solid blocks, no actual articulation needed.)
@Agnemons
@Agnemons 5 месяцев назад
With the Tele handler I would suggest you: Move the base hinge up at least 2 blocks, maybe 3 with the hinge mounted on the front face. This will allow the boom to angle down, lowering the pickup height. With the extra block length being added to the boom that will allow one piston to be removed bringing the weight of the carry in closer so less counter weighting is needed. Because you are raising the hinge point the loss in total lift height will be minimal. You are also better to lower the cab to drop the center or gravity. Moving the connector to the rear will allow the carry position to be moved closer increasing stability. For the Crane towing boom I would sugget you: Build the boom as an 'A' frame tapering into a center point with a single block wide extension to give you additional length if needed. For bonus points in complexity you could add a hinge one or two blocks forward of the A frame hinge's and in the center row. Add a piston to that hinge with another hinge connecting it to the apex of the A frame. Turn all hinges off and control with the piston.
@Zanderof
@Zanderof 5 месяцев назад
The a frame style is great idea I'd say each arm of the A frame have a free hinge at the top of the A, if you use pistons on it. The hingles would allow the micro adjustment without building up unwanted pressure/tension, and make that point be a hinge(block)-hinge set. Like using a triangle with the flat side facing back. And I just realized you were talking about pistons outside of the A frame. Well the idea is still there lol.
@Ninjamilk_
@Ninjamilk_ 5 месяцев назад
I think that with the hinge at the back as it is reduces the amount of counter weight needed, more so as it is levering from the back, making the entire front act as "soft" out riggers. Agree that the design will allow a lower pick up, but i think in SE it will add to the amount of counter balance needed behind the new hinge position. To lower the cockpit he could move the 2 computer type blocks to the rear in amongst the balast, build around them, screens facing rearward for example. That would lower the cockpit. However it would run into the problem of the camera forced into first person if the counter balance in practice needed to be built higher or in line with the back of the cockpit, reducing its feasibility. Particularly with stacking either batteries or small cargo containers for the density and build limitations. I like the A frame suggestion, and wpuld like to see it built, even just to try it out, see if its something i would put wffort into creating for example. Because i am not as good as Splitsie, id like to see it first and go from there.

Small tip for SE and real life, never ever put the heaviest objects on a two wheel trailer at the back! Shifting the center of mass that far back makes the trailer inherently unstable and prone to swinging around a lot with the slightest turn especially at high speeds. The center of mass should always be as close to the pivot point as possible.

56:53 Hmm... I was going to sit here and do the math for you to keep the hinge at the front end directly over the same block space no matter the hinge height, but then realized you'd need to dynamically change the piston max length which I think can only be done with a programmable block. I think it'd be a mix of Trigonometry, Law of Sines, Cosines, Pythagorean Theorum and some substitutions. Assuming your rear hinge angle is [c] and your front hinge height is [C] (lower case vs capital), your base length (length of the hinges+pistons when retracted which = 10) is [B], the angle opposite it as [b] or 90-[c], and your hypotenuse, or pistons when (partially) extended is [A] with [a] being 90, you'll need to calculate for [C] and then use that to determine [A]. So the constants that you know are the base [B] which is 10. [a] is 90. [c] is your hinge angle. So, tan[c] = C/B(=10), or C=(B*tan[c]). And from here, law of Sines maybe? Sin[a(=10)]/A(hyp)=Sin[c]/C or Sin[c]/(B*tan[c]). And then you need [A] by itself so [A] = (sin[a] * ([B] * tan[c]) / sin[c]. Sin of 90 is 1, so [A] = ([B] * tan[c]) / sin[c] I dunno, man. Check my math, lol. But yeah, if you can set the piston max length via programmable block, you'll be set. I don't know enough about SE programming to be of any help here though.

Got the math for the telehandler for you! E= Extension A= Angle B=Base Length T = total length In this case T = sin(A) * B To get E, or the total extension of the pistons, you just subtract B. Your final equation looks like this: E = (sin(a)-1)B Extension per piston is: (Sin(a)-1)b/(number of pistons) Let me know if this works! I’d love to be right but I also haven’t done trig in years

Splitsie in the World of Scrap, good series so far! 🙂 I love your telehandler, for lifting up those big batteries you may have extend the rear-end by 1 or 2 blocks to get to that sweet spot, like the Liftsie in Survival Impossible (SI). Also you might want to build some outriggers at the front for when you extend the boom and the center of mass starts shifting over the front wheels. Also as you mentioned you don't need that many pistons, you could replace the two pistons at the rear with armor blocks and make the raising of the boom piston actuated, like the crane truck you did in SI. I build the LEGO Technic Telehandler and that looks a lot like the one you build. And I like that "arena" idea just to see what other people have been building on the server.

I would have done the fulcrum hinge a little differently, I would have put it up a block or 2 higher up and changed the orientation of the hinge base by 90 degrees, allowing the boom arm to bend below the flat limit it has right now. I'm not sure I'm explaining that correctly, if the frame of your vehicle is 0 degrees and straight up is 90 degrees, you could modify the hinge orientation to have the boom tilt to negative degrees, allowing you to pick things up off the ground easier (but not without risk). This might allow you to have the fulcrum hinge and the head hinge to match angles allowing a self levelling head (your cargo would always be level).

You are right, the extension speed for the arm needs to be l ω (tan θ / cos θ), with - l the arm's length when horizontal, i.e. the distance between the axes of the 2 hinges when the arm is fully retracted ; - ω the angular speed in rad/s, ω = π/30 × rpm ; - θ the current angle of the base hinge ... but I don't think P.A.R.K. supports plonking formulas for the various speeds, so you'd need a different script 😅 The near-tilting at the end, with the heavy battery, made me wonder: since the arm is longer than absolutely necessary, would it make sense to remove a piston and make the S-shaped part with the mag. plate “nestle in” between the wheels? It would mean moving the connector, but it's not conveyored so it could be off-axis (or on the rear maybe?) P.S. I'd offer to script that up, but currently curled up in bed nursing a migraine :(

For the loader, I would suggest a double hinge so that whatever you're lifting doesn't get twisted when lifting the piston arm. It would keep the cargo down and level. Previously I have has the double hinge switched off but with some braking force applied so they don't swing freely, just enough so that under tension they will gently arrest back to a vertical orientation, aligned with gravity. Asides from that, it's a very nice compact design, would just recommend some ballast for those heavy items just incase. I do have my own versions of telescopic handlers and cargo container lifters on the workshop so they're a little more fleshed out but I enjoy using them a lot, especially with PARK for the controls. Man, I wish I could bring my sick Mind into the mix. Having no real base but one transporter with max 10 m/s like a Sand-Ship from Starwars. Randomly pulling up, trading resources, and grinding every scrap I come across. Don't know if that would be an effectiv use of my time, but I dont care. I want to drive a massiv Sand-Ship with automatic systems. (Childhood dream)

I'm surprised you haven't added your favorite 3 way floodlights! the Crane is always handy for reaching up to get TALL things like Tower Cranes! carrying the Forklift around is useful for grabbing salvage and loading/unloading. you might wanna properly repair the roof so the daylight isn't wrecking havoc on the view

I just bought this game. Been watching your 6 year old tutorials. Glad to see you’re still playing this. Your videos are unique in making sense for someone dumb like me so thank you for making those. I think a lot of people missed out on this game because of not being able to learn it properly. Your videos taught me everything to be able to build a ship and use blueprints. I built a mining ship in 20 game hours (after first 5 crashed) now I’m gonna use that to build a blueprint rover and big ass ship. I’m barely going to enjoy this $10 game even though it released 10 years ago lol. Anyway great videos. I subbed so I can watch everything else while I am working. GG

While I still think your original design is cute, this new one looks (and works) pretty darn good... And while useless, I think it needs the spinny light to complete the look. If I may suggest a name, I have two different thoughts. The first one is because I kept mishearing you say telehandler... I kept thinking you said 'Teletran' So Teletran 1? The second is, you said it kind of looked like an insect, I agree, so maybe 'Ant' or if you know the very ancient cartoon... 'Atom Ant'?

I'm quite concerned if there is enough clearance for the wheels. It may just be server/recording thing but wheels sometimes look like they suddenly stop spinning for a moment. Especially those hazard stripes behind wheels give me chills. I crashed number of rovers on purgatory because stuff in that spot. Drive cautiously. I recall from previous conversation you prefer a little bit of steering in front when primary steering is on the rear. I wonder if disabling propulsion on front ones would help, as they pulling forward could throw your aim off. 4 wheel drive is rare thing in forklift. Usually you want your rear wheels do all the work so your front ones can stay as pivot and you turn on a dime. But i expect you may need some extra traction to go over those 2x1 ramps until you replace some of them with what you did for Jex. And i am really curious what forklift arena may be... wonder if somebody would make largegrid forklift xD (totally didn't think of dit myself before, not at all.)

Some small lights on the Forklift just inboard of the wheels for a ground effect lighting would help a TON. Armour blocks on the rear end 1 block behind the hinge and in a semi circle to the wheels would help with weight. They do that on real equipment as both a weight and brush guard. Loving your videos, watching Scrapyard, Assertive Acquisitions and Wrong way Up at the same time lol. While using some of your mods in my own game and a game with my son. Thanks for all the great content!

Love the upgrade to a Telehandler over a forklift. The nice thing about how you have it set up is that the front hinge can act as a quick connect for different tools. Like the current mag plate or pallet forks, a cherry picker carriage, maybe even a welding tool. Love the videos and keep on engineering!

Instead of lifting the flatbed truck .. why not set the front wheels to Zero Friction when hooked up in trailer mode? or just make a dedicated trailer now that you have 2 of those flatbed trucks. That Telehandler is awesome! (looks and function) A good amount of Cool progress today - Spotlight set up was innovative too.

An idea for weight/control. Move the 1st gyro back & down behind the batteries, then add a 2nd gyro to the opposite side behind the other batteries. That should act as both a counterweight & give you more control over whatever you're moving. Besides that, I think your lifter is perfect. Love the compact design🫡👍

The main thing about tele-handlers and fork lifts is to have the front wheels as close to* the (center of mass of the) lifted load as possible. This is to mitigate the lean forward issue onto the front wheels causing that dangerous nose dive. Such a pain to combat with gyros. * or even in-front and under- like IRL with a lean back of the lifting tines on forks, and with a tele-handler you can retract the load to behind the front wheels after slightly lifting. Good effort on first try with the tele-handler. Lovin' it. Others' suggestions for manipulation to give extra degrees of freedom is good for placement, just remember to keep your loads, like friends, close. ;-)

Good to finally see the plane's body, I was wondering how big it actually was since the tail and wings painted a kind of inconsistent picture. Restoring it might be nice just for the nice color scheme it has under all that rust. 22:55 I like that little excavator a lot. It'd be utterly impractical to use for anything since SE hardly simulates scooping terrain but it's a nice design. 48:24 From my understanding, the speed would have to change. The higher the hinge angle gets, the slower the hinge must move (or the faster the pistons must move) in order to keep the load in the same spot. You'd need a script or something to change the speed of the hinge with the angle, though I think if you did that the pistons continuing to move would possibly mean the vertical movement might stay at the same speed from the load's perspective. 55:34 Perhaps the weld pads have some marginal magnetism even at that range? It might do it; if the magnetism is trying to hold the other grid in place (or at least, SE thinks it is even if it isn't) and that's taking some of the load for you. That stuff can be weird. I wish there was an 'auto-level' setting for SE's gyros, like in some other games that use the concept (Terra Tech comes to mind). It'd be a bit scuffed in regards to placement of the gyro, but that can be fixed with settings to change where it's levelling to, and then it would just attempt to stop turns in a given direction. It'd help a lot. Also realistically, with the amount of force those gyros can put out, _they_ should be one of the densest blocks in the game (or have like double the power usage of an atmospheric thruster, I guess). They're ridiculous for such little things. Excited for your arena, particularly if someone just up and brings an aircraft to a lifting competition - because that is a viable alternative.

I'm enjoying this scrapyard series. 👍 Have something like an event controller on the telehandler to control the hinges together. As you raise the boom, the hinge on the end tilts at the same time/speed to keep the "head" of the boom always level (provided you're on level ground), and can turn it off when you're on a slope or when you need to work the hinges separately. Having fewer pistons in the boom could work. Leave one extended enough so the "head" clears the front bumper, but can retract when carrying something heavy like a large battery to bring the weight in closer to center of mass and not have the telehandler be so tippy. Having an option to utilize "crab steering" can allow you to line up with something without all the back-and-forth trying to shift over when you didn't quite line up where you wanted. I agree with Slye_Fox, use pistons to widen the rear wheels on the trailer truck for stability when in trailer mode.

If possible, place a camera on the head of your crane. It will become a very convenient periscope, and it is also very practical when it is used to align objects. (and a light...XD) and I think you can install a rotor on the front of the new forklift to help you Rotate large objects without using various levers

The reason why forklifts armature tilts backwards when under load, no matter where the armature is attached your fulcrum is at the base of the front tires once under load, becomes a balancing act between the mass of the vehicle vs your load, tilting the armature backwards effectively lowers the mass on the load side of the fulcrum point. I hope you aren't planning muilti level shelfs, your tipping woes gonna get much worse the higher you go. I'd suggest a dedicated gyro override system, especially if you gonna follow through with your shelf-less shelf idea. Version 2 is definitely better than the prototype though, love asymmetric cockpit placement, really adds character to designs 😊

I believe it would be possible to outfit the new lifter with a dual-mode grabber. You would need to replace the grebbling on the end of the grabber with another hinge (or two). The second hinge would be attached to the side of a merge block (or connector), with the mag plate mounted on the rear. To switch modes between the mag plate and the merge block, you would simply need to rotate the second hinge by 180 degrees. More than likely, you'd want the merge block/connector positioned for the underslung access (this allowing you to connect to pallets on the ground) and the mag plate in the upper position (allowing things to be grasped from above). Alternately, a rotor (attached on its side to the wrist hinge) could be used to spin the connector or merge block around so the desired face is facing out. A possible advantage of this variant is that it'd give you some left/right flexibility in the grasping of objects.

The way I built my handler is I extended the base tires in the front out in a fork. That way, anything I grab and pull in will be closer to the middle on my handler as opposed to hanging outside my wheel base. With the height of my trucks and trailers, I can drive the forked base under them so I don’t have to do as much extending which means less extending beyond my center of gravity. With a decently wide base, I don’t tip over unless I make a terrible mistake. Edit: It’s sort of like an engine hoist for dropping engines in a car or truck. Not exactly the same, but close enough to look similar in concept.

just thought of a cool idea, @33:13. have that rotating light (with light turned off) buried 'inside' the forklift/ Ie. one block inside. so u can see it but its otherwise surrounded by blocks. this would simulate a working engine inside the vehicle?. Ie moving parts? I know its a greeble thing... but its a neat greeble thing.

for the Telehandler. I'm curious if 2 small grid small cargo at the back (left and right) would give you enough counter balance, if you loaded them with stone or scrap? that way, they can be loaded and unloaded if needed. Additionally for the connector decoration can you cap it off with a capping? keeping it kinda flat on top.

after working around the telahandler for years I'd recommend not only leaving the front steering high. But I'd add two controls to it to turn on/off steering to one set and inverse steering on the other set. having both sets of wheels turning the same direction will give you crab walk.

gotta say, a forklift with a 4t lifting cap is pretty good. As someone who's profession is driving forklifts and telehandlers, I would recommend you lower your power just a little bit. Going in reverse when taking such heavy things like a battery is a good idea as well, since emergency breaking your forklift will not result in the battery or pistons going klang p.s. that is a very cool design. I am definitely stealing that at some point for my own usage

Just a suggestion for the lifter, coming from a automotive background. I would make it front wheel drive. What i am seeing is that while turning slowly it is spinning the rear wheels, which in reality would mean it cant turn sharp as there isn't any real traction on the turning wheels. Not sure if this is actually modeled in game, but i would assume it is. Love your work, keep it up!

The tele-handler looks great, personally I'd have the cockpit 1 block lower to keep the centre of gravity low but your design works well. If you wanted to go down the route of having a connector head on the handler you could build different heads for it but it would slow down the process of moving things around. With the connector on the base for recharging, you could add small connectors to all sides and have different small vehicles recharge from the same single point.

Oooo. That's a slick forklift... or is it a Bobcat with its tool mounted on a boom lift? I almost feel like the loading bay could be recessed into the ground a little bit so your truck/trailer backs in and the floor of the trailer is level with the warehouse floor, then your forklift stowed inside the warehouse simply drives up and pulls stuff off the truck without having to negotiate a ramp. If you want to tempt Clang, you can make that parking spot into an inverse vehicle lift where it lowers the whole lot down until it's level with the warehouse floor.

for a tele-handler, assemble a wheel axle (two wheels and axle in between) then attach it to the body of the vehicle with a rotor. this way you can rotate the axle to allow movement in any direction , including 'almost' sideways.? mmm wait, balance issues, grrr. Okay how about ,, having the whole undercarriage on a rotor (like an excavator?) but add a locking plate at the end of a piston that can lift the whole thing so u can rotate the undercarriage and then set it back down so without maneuvering u can change direction 90 degrees. I love engineering yeah.

Would it be worth having a setting that can be toggled on the handler's wheels to be able to pivot on the spot? Or would that even be possible at all? Not necessarily skid steer but more like setting the wheels all to be turned 90 degrees from each other so it "drives" in a circle. Just squeeze a bit of extra mobility from the platform. Something like tracks or mecanum wheels would be ideal but unfortunately even with mods those don't translate into space engineers very well
