You need to draw a line somewhere. You can say that female Custodes won't make a difference, they'll keep pushing more and more retcons like this until Warhammer is a shell of itself.
Of course Female Custodes isn't a big deal. It's just to warm us up for the inevitable Primarising of Sisters of Battle or whatever they want to get female Space Marines.
Henry cavil is furious with Amazon and threatening to leave the live action show- Apparently Amazon are responsible for pressuring GW into doing this to increase amazons ESG score.
GW is free to change the lore. I just wish they would have given a story or updated lore reason for the change instead of trying to say people were crazy. A reason like "due to the tyranid threat, there have been extremely heavy losses for the 10, 000. Luckily, during the crusade against the tyranids, the Ad Mech recovered some ancient lost technology that made the creation of female custodians possible. Replenishments for the custodes over the last X years have been from the sons and daughters of Terra." Or something like that.
@@guydude4124 All I have seen is the excerpt that was leaked from the codex telling a story about a single female custodes. Please share the story that you are referring to. I am not a custodes player and I don't know much about their lore.
to be fair i think it's easier than some ridiculous new invention in lore. if it's been more than 10,000 years without female custodians and it's worked perfectly fine, why would they have bothered suddenly changing it? manpower isn't an issue in the imperium so it doesn't really make sense that someone in lore would invent a workaround to enable it. As much as it's not an ideal explanation it doesn't actually change any lore written so far.
i think the same, but in the end, it doesn't change the game at all, and the lore has been retconned and redo multiple times at this point. is not the "wokeness is going to destroy everything" some butthurts are saying it is.
@@esteban20969564 yeah some people are unreasonably - no - comically upset about something that functionally changes nothing. They act as if a real life history book has been altered. As if 40k has always had concrete lore with only ever one interpretation of anything that has ever been in the setting.
@@forren9299 you are right, manpower isn't an issue, but quality manpower is, you can field an army of kriegs corps or any astra militarum army and have 2 million more as replacement, but you can't have the same number in space marines, much less custodes. I want to believe that this is the emperium using the other half of the babies population to have more chances of creating more custodes and have more numbers without sacrificing quality.
@@esteban20969564 i think it makes more sense for them to have done it from the start. in this case though the number of humans to draw from is literally endless. Even if the population they could use is like half a percentage it's probably more than a billion humans.
Once the door is opened, it's virtually impossible to close it let alone get rid of any unwanted intruders. They don't want a space, they want your space.
Just a matter of time until they say one or both lost space marine chapters were entirely or had women space marines. If in universe they alter the human form beyond man or woman, why would you need a female model? Shouldnt they just look like all other custodes?
If this was an existing part of the lore for the whole time it wouldn't be an issue, this is a move to appease a part of modern sensibilities and shareholders to try to attract an audience of people that don't care about a setting, rather than caring about seeing themselves within the setting, instead of trying to cater to the fans that made their company what it is today. They're catering to the death of settings, the same way LOTR, Halo, and the Witcher have with their shows, or Star Wars. 40k was one of the few universes not infected with identity politics and such but the people who get off on their representation see that and now want it here too. Its just a sign of things to come, like a snowball down a mountain, logical fallacy be damned. Just sad to see.
Isn't there something in the lore that states that the echlesiarchy are forbidden from having an army, but the echlesiarchy found a loophole in said order that allowed the formation of the sisters of battle? Something along the lines of "Well yes, we're forbidden from yielding an army of men, but it never states anything about forming an army of nuns!" Or something like that? Genuine question, I'm not entirely sure if that's the case or not in the lore.
Hahaha! "Doesnt change much." This is like saying goodbye to your wifes boyfriend the next morning and telling yourself "She's still my wife. She makes the best bacon and eggs, nothing has changed." I bet thats what the superfans for star wars were sobbing as they held their princess leiah body pillow rationalizing the insults Disney slowly unloaded on them.
Thank you for the video. I'm glad there are sane people around this topic. I would like to share my thoughts, as a long time fan of this franchise, this hobby and as a Custodian and Sisters of Battle ENJOYER. I think female Custodians just enhances the theme of the Custodes, being 'Humanity at it's finest'. Having women involved just...makes sense considering the genecraft. However I hard agree GW could have handled this a LOT better. If they made a book and made this lady a one off or even just a brand new 'Hey, this has never worked for a woman before but it has worked on THIS one, and maybe more in the future' could have been far more interesting. However I don't think this 'takes away' from the cool factor of the other female factions. Here's why. Sisters of Silence's theme and 'thing' is not that they are women. That's not important. What IS important is their Null gene and their anti-psyker powers. That's what makes them cool. They were never meant to be 'equal' to the Custodians. They are a supplementary fighting force to cover the one thing the Custodians are not 1000% efficient at fighting, that being Psykers. Sisters of Battle are really cool because insane zealot nuns with guns, and frankly they would make males of the faction if Black Templar didn't already 100% fill that niche. They are also less competent on the battlefield than Sisters of Silence, afaik. But they are not any less cool or important for being below Space Marines or SoS or Custodians. Just because there's a 'higher place on the totem pole' does not mean those below are not badasses! Space Marines are great. Even the humble guardsman is way more brave than any Custodian ever could be on the sheer premise that he's charging the exact same enemy a Custodian would, and he has nothing but a spicy flashlight in his hands. Imagine having to charge into the melee with a Great Unclean one as...well - You. I think that is a lot more powerful than being a demigod in unbreakable, unfailing gold armor charging into that thing. As for this Custodian lady being 'too competent', I will point out the Custodians are by in large literally perfect. They are immortal, unflinching, unfearing, unquestioning, PHD in everything gods among men who can take down thousands upon thousands of combatants with anything you want them to wield. They are the bodyguards of the God Emperor and they were wise enough to advise him.
I just don't care about 40K anymore. They don't respect their lore, they don't respect the fan base, they don't respect the setting or anything about it. At this point every time GW gets fucked over I just laugh as 40K falls apart.
Custodes are not space marines. Custodes do not have gene seed. Therefore there is literally no rules on who is and who isn't a custodes. Custodes are not made the same way space marines are. There could easily be male SoS but there arent because of how rare nulls are and men get turned into assassins. SoS are female because the faction chooses to be that way not because there is a reason why they are female. Male nulls exist but theres hints females are just more likely to be nulls. The only reason anyone thinks custodes have to be male is a complete misunderstanding that they are completely UNRELATED to space marines. They are not a faction of space marines. They were made before everyone else and are just super humans. This whole controversy is a massive misunderstanding of the lore to begin with. Custodes were before the thunder warrior. They were before the space marines. Thunder warrior were enhanced adult humans and they were psychotic. The space marines were made specifically to be disposable. Custodes are literally just pre-strife level genetically altered humans. Pre strife humanity was probably filled with genetically altered humans on par with custodes. Custodes don't even need to be huge and strong. They are simply different perfect humans. Pre strife humanity was probably the same thing.
Maybe the female factions are the women who failed out of the Custodes training/enhancement? Maybe women have a higher failure rate but it is somewhat offset by being more likely to survive failing.
Nah, it doesn't change much. Over a decade ago, when someone pointed out that the changes to make Marines out of humans would probably be very "butch" females, no big deal, even though it was technically a caving in back then. Today? Yep, it is a big fething deal, not for any game reason, but for massive lore reasons and why the frack does a company that already is one of the driving forces of 3d printing with its pricing policies and automatic price increase minimums, want to piss off its customers even more? Seriously, I bought enough boxes of great DKoK infantry proxies years ago for a foot guard list, including command, heavy weapons and other specials, for a price that would maybe have bought me three of squads and a command squad back then.
It just makes them redundant. Why make a stink about having a female only regiment or faction. If you’re just going to put them into every other faction
I like big muscular women I literally do not care about lore implications for Sisters of Silence/Battle because those still serve as "base level humans being sick as fuck" instead of "golden child of genetic design dedicated to Big E" We're getting big sweaty meaty women that can crush my fucking skull with 1 hand, I DO NOT CARE
to me it seems its mainly people outside the hobby that are pushing for this type of stuff because for some reason or other they can't stand the hobby and those that like it so they want to find ways to mess with it and those that like it. i often compare them to the stereotypical highschool bullies who target the nerds and geeks just they've graduated from terrorizing them at school to go to the source of what their victims like and messing with the source of the thing their targets enjoy. plus also many of those same people have taken up pretty cult like ideologies as well just makes things even worse. along with similar motivations and issues of these people.
“Think about how many new people will be interested in the custodians because they’re now represented” This is a pretty stupid mindset, most people don’t care if they’re represented or not, very few 40k fans would look like the Imperial guard let alone a Space Marine & the Alien races are massively popular despite not representing humans. Also the 40k player base is like 93% male (Warhammer & tabletop strategy games in general just aren’t that popular with women) so the percentage of new people feeling represented will most likely be dwarfed by the custodian fans who will be angry at this decision. I very much doubt this decision had anything to do with boosting sales & there have been some recent leaks which also suggest it had nothing to do with sales.
Personally, I'm still learning the lore. So I know for a fact I have no say in any of this. I'm just hoping the fandom doesn't rip itself apart before I can learn enough to enjoy the setting more than I currently already do.
Don't worry, they'll be over it within a week or two. This is minor compared to GW completely retconning and changing the Necrons into what they are now.
GW already said that the genetic alterations of the Astartes are only compatible with XY. I don't see why any of the very many highly personalized alterations of custodes couldn't be compatible with XX and the others 22 same pairs. Y chromosome only contain 42 unique protein-coding genes... Therefore, the thousands of alterations and improvements made to the Custodes, totally different from the Astartes, must be on the common genome. My theory is that custodes are dark technology era human enhanced but link with the emperor in will throw soul bonding or something like this. Modification too good for thunders or space marines... All the stock value of GW is in the lore. Modernizing the lore and making it less of an 80s action movie and making it progress coherently is part of the company's multi-million dollar value. And I repeat, GW already said that Astartes can only be XY. What more do you want? And Sisters never been even close to Custodes. Custodes are not Nulls but they can get well together because lore stated that the custodes are superior human being in all sense and control and discard the negativity sisters provoke... i dont knwo why people say: "sisters already female".
I am more baffled at how much wh40k fans are reacting; claiming that this retcon ruins all wh40k are they still pissy about the time they retconed tau or the necrons or the squats (Plus, sisters of battle/silence are not augmented like custodes, mor even like the regular marines are)
The community isn't angry about female Custodes. The community is angry because they were introduced in a very underhanded way (snuck into a codex) without any lore explanation whatsoever, and to make matters much worse anyone who questioned this move was gaslit by the GW community managers and blocked from GW social media platforms. You can ret con if you like, but AT LEAST have a decent explanation that fits the setting's lore instead of blasting anyone who questions it as a bigot.
@@ChrisPaintsModels when the necrons were totally revamped; did you cry and kicked and threw a tantrum? @@alexthestinkerWay to strawman the minority. Most are angry over being treated like idiots. To be fair, most are to spend thousands on plastic toys, but they don't like being treated that way.
While I do agree with your wider point, saying that the introduction of female Custodes diminishes the accolades of the Sisters of Battle/Silence is kind of dumb. I don't think you would apply the same logic to male only factions like the Space Marines. Also similar to the Sisters of Silence, Custodes are made as infants, you can't be promoted to a Custodian in the same way you can't be promoted to a Sister of Silence. With that being said, there are so many better ways GW could have did this other than a short story and gaslighting on Twitter. But also, I don't understand why some people care so much. It's not like a female custodes underwent female puberty or has functioning reproductive organs. It's just stupid. A custodian probably looks at sex in the same way a psychopath looks at empathy.
A writer of lore Richard fox said if he were to do this he would’ve had the shield host go the sisters of silence and take one of them as a child and raised her as a Custode for a special purpose. He said you could’ve done this, and respect the lore. That’s what I’m mad at. The gas lightning of the fans.
Hey most of what your saying i agree with it doesnt change basically anything, but like you saying "female custodies invalidates all the other female factions" is kinda weird? Did male custodies invalidate the guard or space marines? Do the howling banshees invalidate eldar forces? its a bit weird and i dont understand your though process on that. I also disagree with female custodies invalidating the sisters because the sisters are blanks, a custodies isnt. Having these sisters around to help fight demons and protect vs warp fuckery one of the few things that can just blip a custodies out of reality is a GODSEND for them. Just because a female custodies exsits and has always existed doesn't invalidate the insanely rare resource that is a blank warrior. Also to add onto the whole "they have always been here " thing it kinda makes sense we dont really have many pure custodies stories there are 10k of these golden warriors, we have what like 100+ named custodies that are all male. Thats 1% of the entire fighting force, if we assumed it was a 50/50 of male to female which i doubt it is it is perfectly reasonable we just never had a story about or featuring a female custodies until now. Exactly the same as how we didnt get stories about the vottan or rogal dorn tanks.
What people are mad about is the going against established canon (9 whole editions of it) in order to please shareholders (blackrock and vangaurd) and spread 'The Message' as CriticalDrinker calls it. If this had been revealed in one of the 30K books that The Emperor made a breakthrough that allowed a few women to become custodes, the backlash would have been somewhat weaker, instead they put it in a codex tucked away in a short story, as if for us to not notice. When people then do notice and rightfully have questions, they pull out the Big Brother, and say "We have always had female Custodes", and proceed to ban anyone on twitter who criticises them or points out that they are being inconsistent with their own lore. It reminds me of the comic that goes: 1. You do not belong here 2. Then we'll create our own space 3. Stop excluding us 4. You do not belong here We didn't gatekeep hard enough boys.
@@MacroLore Yes it is. Considering it took the emperor 200 years to create the first 10k. Now they have created 9 thousand in 9 thousand years. The attrition rate has to be off the scale compared to the space marines which is still high but the SM have multiple worlds to pull from where as the custodies have only the best most pure gene stock from terra. Now if they actually wanted to add to the lore instead of shoe horning "the message". Instead of doing the smart thing they are following the Disney school of thinking and attacking the fans that made this IP what it is.

I really dont understand how this invalidates either the sisters of silence, they fill a very specific niche that a female custodian has 0 impact on and are still wildly important. I have never felt a brother/sister relationship between the custodes and the SoS in books series like watchers of the throne. That being said I think if this is all we are going to get than I will be exceptionally disappointmed. The change is good on the onus of GW to iterate more on the SoS and the SoB lore if they plan to include canon female custodians.
If we let THEM have the Custodes today, do you think THEY will be satisfied and stop there? No. Custodes today, something else tomorrow and it will continue until 40K is a rotting carcass.
I wonder if there if a difference of scale here. It is true that there is the Sisters of Silence and Sisters of Battle are all female, until you look in lore and see who controls them. But for all male factions you have the entirety of space marines. All chapters, all flavors. Seems a bit different, and frankly who cares about the lore, this is a miniatures game. Im sorry a book written 40 years ago doesnt sit as well now
It's not a matter of scale, there are several magnitudes difference in the number of Sororitas and Space marines, the Sororitas don't have a codex astartes equivalent to limit their numbers, and there are just as many orders minoris as there are space marines chapters. The scale isn't the problem, the writing is. There are 6 orders of sororitas with conflicting ideologies, but the only one that ever gets lore is Our Martyred Lady. Ebon Chalice, Sacred Rose, and Valorous Heart are all more or less ignored in story telling, Argent Shroud only has Vahl (who admittedly is the sisters equivalent of a primarch), and bloody rose gets the most love on the tabletop because their rules are always hilariously overpowered compared to everyone else in the faction. They even have had rules for making your own custom Orders Minoris. It's completely a matter of how they're represented in the lore.
If you don't care about the lore, then you may as well play a WWII wargame or something else. Use cardboard cutouts of random characters off of Google Images and copy paper battlefields. The lore draws the interest of the players, and keeping it consistent and clear indulges their immersion and attachment to the game.
@@AerinstadasChronicler You know 3d printing, custom chapters, and making your own story is a huge part of 40k right. Also yes, people use proxies all the time becuase its a miniatures game first and foremost. Lore only to further miniature sales and will change to make money. If you dont like it find another hobby.
It is almost irrelevant to the lore, although yet another insult to Sisters of Silence wasn’t needed. It’s problematic because it’s unarguably the first step of changing 40k “for the modern audience” and ensuring our little plastic crack habit supports “the message”. This was not asked for nor is wanted by the actual fans and has been a critical and commercial failure on every IP it’s been foisted upon. Social media is not reality & the desires of progressives are not the majority. This nonsense destroyed the profitability of SW & Marvel and has already hurt the stock price for GW. I’m not emotionally invested in any fantasy world, but this move is just sad, dumb, cowardly and in the end self destructive.
In a lot of these cases, I don’t think this is about the ‘liberal addenda,’ the company probably thinks adding females would make more money so they will. Space marines and custodians are very popular while the sisters are not (relative to the others). They probably just want to gain more female fans, as Warhammer is basically carried by thirty year old men. GW’s management, out of touch as they are, probably think all they need to do is add woman to the most popular groups in the setting, then they’ll get more female fans. This disregards the fact that Warhammer is grim-dark which is already a niche genre as is. Slightly off topic, but It’s funny how people would argue that companies are soulless machines who only care about money. These same people then forget that they said this, and claim companies change their lore because of a Machiavellian plot to control the world. These companies don’t care about social change, only money. GW wants you to spend your life savings on some plastic figures nothing more nothing less.
This question has been asked and answered already and the overwhelming answer is no it wont bring enough women into the game to off set the significantly larger population of players who will leave due to this idiocy. As far as companies not valuing social change over money this is no longer true Disney has proved this time and time again.
This is the first small step in a long line of concessions to make 40k more politically correct. There needs to be outrage; a retcon to appease people who aren't even Custodes fans is moronic.
