The wedding ring tip makes me sad. What a world we live in.
@hopscotchtheglobe
@hopscotchtheglobe 8 лет назад
+Nina I completely understand how you feel. In many countries, it's just the norm that marriage is the most important and celebrated part of life. When you wear a ring many people will automatically have more respect for you because marriage is very respected.
@asksyealer
@asksyealer 8 лет назад
+Kristen Sarah I see. And marriage should be respected! In some countries it's a case of: we respect you more in relation to a man than we respect you as a woman, on her own. And that especially makes me sad.

+Nina It's a stupid idea and by just wearing a ring we are doing nothing than fueling the problem!! I will never walk around with a ring and if a man can't respect that he will from that day on learn what respect means!
@cass8821
@cass8821 8 лет назад
+Nina i think you're sort of taking their tips out of context a little - i think they're saying "if u are wearing a ring they'll see that you're not available and will respect that you're obviously not single" not that you deserve more respect because you're married...

i feel so sorry that we as women have to keep saying "oh but we love men!!" and feel like we have to justify ourselves before we talk about men catcalling/ staring at us. like despite the fact that most of them just disrespect us and don't give it a second thought, we still feel guilty for calling them out...

You Girls ROCK!!! but sometimes I just find it pretty unfair that girls has so much more to take care/be aware of while guys can just go out whenever they want carefreely & some countries girls are treated unequally, always below men. also we got PERIODS to take care of!!!

Isn't it so sad that half this video is about safety and avoiding unwanted attention from guys? It sucks but it also REALLY does have to be mentioned especially if there are young girls watching who are still a bit naive to the world. I was 18 and alone when I went travelling to America and until that trip I had never got attention from guys at all whether at school or in public but literally the first day I was there I was getting yelled at in the street. Can be very daunting when you're young and on your own xo

Really, watch the alcohol! If 3 beers gets you a little buzzed, only have 2. When you travel alone or even with 1 other female friend, you have to been in control and appear to be in control. Sleazy dudes wait for girls to get drunk and then start hitting on you. So, this can be greatly avoided by being more moderate in your boozing.

It's funny that being a female in the middle east can sometimes be easier, mainly in the richer areas. for example in dubai there are special areas in the subway for females so they feel safer.

Saying things to women in the streets like "bella" is NOT culture, anywhere, is awfull and you should NOT ACCEPT it and not get used to. Im from spain and if we acept theese things its only going to get worse.

The best pieces of advice in this video according to me were: look confident! Do not tell people that you're alone, and do not believe that it is dangerous to travel as a woman. The shorts in Bulgaria...I saw several comments say that wasn't true, and I would agree! I've been there three times and shorts were not issue. It would be interesting to know where exactly you were and what year that was. Now let's talk about harassment. The fact that "everyone does it" does not make it okay. Shouting "compliments" at someone who that makes uncomfortable, no matter the language, the country, the religion...should not be okay. We're far from that being the norm worldwide. I agree with you ladies that you should not react to it, either positively (smile) or negatively (shout back insults), because this will this will lead the harasser to continue and engage with you further. Credentials: I have lived on 4 continents and traveled to 26 countries xxx

Most of these tips are awesome and useful. But I feel like I need to add my two cents here about the "most men are just trying to help" comment you made. This is not a good piece of advice to be giving anyone, especially women. Young women are especially impressionable and if you tell them that "most men just want to help" when they go out traveling by themselves, or in a group, they may be too trusting of strangers in a strange place. I can totally understand if I've been standing in one place, staring at a map for 15 minutes looking confused and someone comes to offer directions because they see me struggling. However, even if it is the norm of the country you are visiting, if someone is pestering you with help you didn't ask for, and getting too close because "why are you alone", "I just want to help", you need to get the F* away from that person. The best thing you can do is be vigilant at all times.

Nadine, you really impressed me with your advice on footwear, coming from someone who learned the hard way. Who tried to climb a rocky mountain in flip flops, and went to a dance lesson in Uggs? lol. Changing the subject, it occurred to me that it would help travelers a lot to hear how you coped with situations where you missed a connection. or got dropped off at the wrong location, or lost your booking, or just got lost, or really any of the things that didn't go as planned. Not everyone has got your self confidence and might be scared to travel to unknown places, and I think you are best placed to give advice on that.

Sexual protection options girls? If you really like certain name brand condoms, such as non latex, etc, bring them with you. Other countries sometimes only have cheap low quality ones available. And birth control is usually available over the counter in many countries.

I would say as well, just as a precaution, learn some sort of self defence. I have been doing Krav Maga for around 5 years now and it has boosted my confidence so much, I can walk around alone and feel safer and less intimidated. It honestly really helps build your character and gives off the 'don't mess with me' vibe when you want it to. I wish we lived in a world where learning how to protect yourself wasn't a thing but it is and you should just to be extra safe! Many clubs, such as mine will cater to your needs if you let them know that you're going travelling in X amount of weeks, they can show you many different techniques against common attacks against women and it really is worth knowing whether you're going to travel on your own or not. 😊

The wedding ring thing doesn't always work. I feel like this is one of those tricks that everyone suggests but no ones actually tried it and found it doesn't work. I tried it, and the guys in Egypt either didn't care or didn't buy it. If theres not a guy next to you, you're not married. I'm not bothering with it again, as I don't like wearing rings. Many cultures don't wear wedding rings either.

I bet I'll lose my passport and miss my flight and go up the wrong plane on my first solo trip. I'm also a really paranoid person about female safety and especially perverts. I actually worry that more than anything else like losing money or smth. Like that's really the reason why I don't like to dress showing too much skin when I go out even in my own country even though it's probably not even the right reason to be molested because of how you dress. But I really really really don't know how to deal with this and I always feel very paranoid. I'm not even good-looking wth I'm just gonna travel with my girlfriends.

I know exactly how you feel, you are so not alone. I think it's probably better to travel with your friends. But saying that I think you get a lot of benefits by travelling alone. I think once you do it the first time its not that bad the next time, plus the first time it just means you'll be more aware of what going on around you. If your still worried try carrying around perfume or deodorant spray as protection to spray in the eyes. I would say as long as your not out too late at night you'll be fine Good luck and safe travels x

Nice video Nadine! Some women can be put off traveling solo due to hearing so many scare stories, but sadly they'd be missing out on so much in life. I'd like to add though that I strongly believe that we solo female travelers should know ways to defend ourselves if we are ever being attacked. Not all of us have time to take self defense classes however, so I'd like to share some tips which I have learned. There are very effective ways for women for fighting off even the strongest of men. I've been taking Krav Maga for women classes for self-defense and I've learned that the best self- defense targets on a mans body for women, and the best ways of striking them are as follows: - the eyes (finger poke them) - the nose (palm heel strike upwards) - the throat (chopping like actions) - the testicles (knee / kick / punch / slap / grab-twist-pull and *hold on to them tightly* until he collapses and passes out within a matter of seconds) - the knees (sideways kick to dislocate) I've been taught that even a trained, determined teenage girl could easily take down a man if she goes for these targets, especially if she goes *fast* and *hard* for the *eyes* or the *testicles* (or "high balls" and "low balls" as I've also heard them called.) If he's removed his trousers and he is about to rape you, then *his testicles will now be extremely vulnerable* to a "grab, twist, pull and hold" counterattack, and you should keep squeezing and pulling them as hard as you can (you can even use both hands, and it's still just as effective even if you only manage to get hold of one testicle) until he passes out in under 8 seconds. When a man has his testicles forcefully squeezed it causes him to curl over and quickly lose all of his strength before he collapses, and this holds true no matter how big and strong he is - which is great for us women to know about and take advantage of if we're being attacked by a man. This technique has actually saved many women throughout the world. We can all fight back effectively and stay safe if we know how and where to strike on an attackers body.

I live in the Caribbean and the reason you'll get cat calls for that is because it's not too common everywhere in the Caribbean to see a girl with a little bit paler skin, longer hair, etc. It's just not that common that the outfit is that comfortable. And by comfortable I don't mean shorts: those are of course common. I mean having your hair up with like sweatpants and stuff.

Can you do a more detailed video on what to pack when visiting a country for two weeks? I know you've done weekends and what to pack. I'm thinking of backpacking this one but I haven't traveled internationally in years..

im colombian and its a very liberal country when it comes to clothes but the specific city where I'm from people don't usually wear shorts... they just wear jeans when they go out.

Questions: If you are carrying a backpack say 50 L. Would you turn that to the front also? I don't believe so because of bulk. Also, would you suggest locking zippers together to prevent theft? or would that make it to obvious and a "challenge" for thieves. I.E valuable stuff in the pack.

Keep the 50l in the back and if anything you can lock those zippers together . It doesn't make it a challenge , it just deters them away

You can also put the rain cover on your bag. It will at least be harder for thieves to see or assess what they're stealing or want to steal. (btw. not my idea, I just read it somewhere)

It's a rare zipper that I cannot open by stabbing between the zipper teeth with a ballpoint pen. Bosnian Bill on RU-vid has a great video about this.

It's completely ok to wear shorts in Bulgaria!!! It would only be frowned upon if said shorts were extremely tiny and barely cover your bum. Otherwise it's ok.

I found this really helpful. Some parts of the world can be super intimidating to travel alone as a female, but I think generally, people are more good than bad in this world :).

I know this is an older video but my daughter is 20 years old and I truly believe traveling would be an amazing experience for her, especially overseas! The problem is when she went away for her freshman year of college, she came home for her sophomore year because she was stressed and homesick. How do I convince her she can do this? Besides trying to find someone to take care of her cats 🐱.
