Fencing with Medieval Rondel Daggers

It's been quite a time since we shared some dagger fencing. While dagger is not a main focus in our regular curriculum, we do like to play with daggers every once in a while and use it for complementary training in our Messer class.
It's always a fun challenge to put the closer distance at work.

This is really cool, I remember the first time I went to the UK and I saw a live performance I was really confused at the time but now I can appreciate the art

It is different from what you would expect to see today, yes. That can be a little confusing at first. Their context was different and that shapes the art in the end.

I would have thought overhand grip would only happen if it's simulated armoured combat. If it's unarmored a normal grip gives more reach and more targets/more angles of attack.

We aim to do what we see and read in the sources. The underhand grip is not limited to those speaking of armoured combat. Take Joachim Meyers work for example.

Haben die Messer auch Schneiden?

Wir nutzen die "Rondel Dagger Trainer" von Cold Steel aus Kunststoff. Die simulieren einen Scheibendolch mit Dreikant-Klinge, also ohne Schneide. Historische Exemplate variieren da allerdings von Stück zu Stück.

@@olafjagel5134 Einerseits deshalb - andererseits, weil wir versuchen, möglichst das nachzubilden, was wir in den überlieferten Quellen zu sehen bekommen. Schnitte zu den Händen sind da quasi nicht-existent, deshalb hier auch unsererseits kein Fokus daraus. Hinweis: Was wir im Video tun, kann und darf auf keinen Fall mit modernem Messerkampf oder moderner Selbstverteidigung gleichgestellt werden. -Ulrik

@@die.freifechter verstehe ich, klar. jetzt ist halt die Frage , zeigt die Quelle alles? Aber ohne Zeitmaschine werden wir es nie herausfinden. De Schnitte wren für mich nur naürliche logische Bewegungen gewesen. Only my 2cents.
