It's all preference, looking old and weathered can look good, gives it character, instead of just being factory clean, looks like it's seen a thing or two
Same reason bad ass trucks drive down the highway with mud caked all over it (look guys I went off-roading) or the same reason people buy ripped jeans . I don’t need any help with the road worm guitars I got a “clumsy wife”
I have this guitar and I love it, I got it because I love Nirvana, and I thought it was cool watching Kurt play it live, this is the only reason I got this guitar, and I ain't ashamed to admit it ;) It's a great rock guitar, really drives an overdriven amp well :)
Bram Claes Whatever works for you (I guess), but I agree that in engineering terms, the 5/64ths of an inch was used as a numerically convenient dimension.
people think metric is easier because it divides measures by 1/10/100/1000 etc but the actual units are quite awkward whereas imperial measurements are based on practical measurements e.g a can of coke is 375ml = 1 pint /500ml would be too much for a normal measure so they have to round it down to an "imperial"measure/if talking about someones height its easier to say 5ft 10 than 1.78 metres or 6ft 6 instead of 1.98 metres.if people think that dividing by 10 or 100 is easier for measurement then take a look at your watch or calendar...60 secs=1 min/60 min= 1hr....7 days =1 week/52 weeks=1 year etc ....And finally ALL countries that LOST in WW2 used metric weapons ALL countries that WON used imperial
Wait...hold on, you are saying that the imperisal system is handy? And simple? The imperial system compared to the Metric is retarded, the metric is sooo easy, 1 meter is 100 cm, 1000 meters is one kilometer. 10 millimeters is one centimeter. It dosent get easier than that.
I am a big fan of yours Dave! I own one of these too! It is a fantastic guitar hands down! I recorded a single "Major Matt Mason" with it and you can get sounds out of this guitar that others just cannot produce! If you ever looked at pictures of Curts original, you will notice the black electricians tape on the switch and I always wondered why he did that on stage until I got mine! It you get too crazy on the downstroke, you will flick the switch off! So now I know! Keep up the good work.
yes sir it has been a long time but i'm still here, just been busy with life and work lately , i'm a SR. IT Suport technician for a major healthcare company now and until recently didn't have a whole lot of time to commit to watching any more. been getting in a little here and a little there when i can and yeah you know i support people whenever i have the opportunity. surprised we haven't seen you playing with your squibs lately though
Dave, how are you? I have a Jaguar that keeps breaking the High E at the ball end, right on the ball loop. I tried different gauges, different brands, put a new trem system. Even if i dont use the trem at all it ends up breaking the string when I bend it. Do you have any ideas of what it could be? thanks
With the locking tremolo you are supposed to adjust the screw on the trem plate until the lock just slides back when in tune. That way if you break a string or want to do an alternate tuning you can slide the lock back and the guitar will stay in tune.
Dave. Forgive me for being obtuse, but since the scale length of that Jaguar is 24" would you want to measure it at a lower fret for string height? I know most Fenders are 25.5". I am asking because I was going to set up a Jaguar and I am confused a bit. If you see this ... thanks.
Hey Dave, do you know it would be great to get the owners on the vid telling you what problems they think the guitar is having and then you fixing them
Two comments Dave. The FURY guitar you had in the shop was made by Glenn Macdougall of Fury guitars in Saskatoon. You are correct in stating the only off the shelf piece were the tuners. Even his pots were custom designed. The screws he used are stainless steel so a player you never have to worry about guitars apart. I regret to say Glenn passed away last spring 2018. He had been hand assembling guitars in 1962 in the basement his war time home. My family has 6 of his guitars. My son Andrew Kesler is a jazz pianist and rock and roll guitar slinger. Andrew once played in some concert in France. Later a guest from that concert emailed Glenn to make him a right handed guitar as Andrew is lefty his guitars are shipped from the factory built to machine shop tolerances. He even ventured into chrome plating all the hard ware....Glenn had a mission statement of sorts. One of his models was the Cryptic B B M. That is :the bread and butter maker for working musicians. Let's not focus on the person whose name is on the guitar, but the man showing us the setup of the damn thing. The attention should be on Dave. Love the movie length videos dude.
The trem looks super far back, but im assuming that's because of the other bridge/saddles that are at the correct location. Does this provide any advantage? Also for everyone a question I have: On a stoptail do you have to have the bar at a specific distance/what happens if I were to place the stoptail piece farther back?
dave, this is probably a stupid question, but here goes, why on every guitar in the neck always wider where it meats the body, then at the nut? dick bailey, thanks
Hey man, this is my favorite guitar off all time! 2 Years ago, I bought a fender jaguar classic player sunburst with the single coils. At that time, I didn't know the difference between single coils and humbuckers, and I also didn't know that my guitar was brand new, and the signature is relived. Another thing about the signature is that the yellow collor is more bright I miss the gotoh tuners as well. I put a seymour duncan hotrail in my guitar. I feel sorry though that i didn't bought that one
Dave: that little button on that Jaguar trem is for locking it from doing up pulls. You have to push the trem arm down real, hard and then snap the button back. Then you re-tune and your ready to go.
Well, first you have to trim the claws on their front paws then it's a good idea to bribe them to pay attention. A nice juicy salmon tail usually works well. Once they're sitting comfortably, strap the guitar on him/her and try something simple just to start with, maybe just the chords from Sound of Silence for example? Remember, even though you trimmed the claws, Jaguars have very big, sharp teeth and can get bad tempered if they keep hitting bum notes (as we all can) so make sure you're next to an open door just in case you need to bail out quickly.
This guitar just looks like it would just totally rock any style of music. I think I played one at a friend's years ago although it may have been a normal Jag, awesome feel. I think it had singles instead of HB's though.
Hi there! There is an issue about the smell (Kurt smelled like teen spirit ??? so they say) but it goes away with time. I do have your missing screw, so... and nearly no problems with string buzz. The only big issue I have with this guitar is the fact that i feel that the basses overlap the high strings (acute notes), comparing with other guitars I own. I'd love to hear them a little bit more, specially for the solos. Don't know if that can be fixed somehow.
I love your videos Dave. I think you were confused though, This guitar is modeled after a 66 jaguar, so it does has the Vintage trem. I believe you were thinking of the mustang you worked on.
Buzz can be from improperly cleaned (0000 steel wool) frets. That said, anyone who can't adjust their own stuff needs to put it in the case and forget about playing.
Hiya doin Dave, that button next to that bridge screw is to lock the trem.you push it toward the string anchor to lock it,and reverse it to unlock.Have fun bro, cya.
The bridge probably doesn't look as reliced because, on Kurt's actual guitar, he would have added the tune-o-matic after the guitar was already 20-25 years old, so it would have had that much less wear than the rest of the chrome parts.
Well Leroy, mass and weight are very close to the same thing. All weight is, is mass multiplied by the downward force of gravity, or 9.8 meters per second squared. So all mass is, is weight (a force) divided by 9.8.
I had a 94 Japanese jaguar I put a humbucker in and that was my kurt guitar now I got this one and a kurt Mustang comp in blue and a baby blue 96 jagstang
His was made in the U.S, but fenders only relic factory, aside from the custom shop is in Mexico. To keep costs down fender made it in Mexico instead of a custom shop exclusive
Great video as always Davey, but this guitar has a 24" scale length with means it should've been set up closer to Gibson specs. However, you are the master of the set up so do as you will.
I believe the bridge looks different because Kurt installed a different bridge on his guitar. So It probably was made at a different time, different material, different wear etc.
The bridge looks different because it gets far more abrasion from skin contact, mostly from palm-muting, but it'll be enough to alter the sheen over a protracted period. (here's a slightly different example) I have a matt black Epiphone LP, but where the forearm rests/contacts with the top of the body, it's achieved a nice high gloss. Not by any means a mirror finish, but it's a marked difference to the rest of the body. I may have to order some of Stuart Semple's Black 2.0. Here's what it looks like... www.coolthings.com/stuart-semple-black-2-acrylic-paint/ And here's his shop link in case you're also tempted. www.culturehustle.com/products/black-v1-0-beta-the-world-s-mattest-flattest-blackest-art-material
I'd prefer to own the Jagstang Cobain guitar, and i was thinking. If the guy is heavy handed on the neck, he could probably get away with jacking up the string height like stevie ray vaughan did. I've heard a few guitar greats say you could drive a truck under his strings....
yeah, but because the flower sniffin, kitty pettin, baby kissin, corporate rock whores (aka nirvana) made it big, fender decided to UP the price to a stupid $1,800 to get some extra cash. p.s. don't get me wrong, fender are my favourite guitar company, i'm just saying it's a bit much for a guitar which would have been dirt cheep. and yes i know it would've took time to make a road worn version, but the brand new polished version is only $200 less.
The mentality required for somebody to buy a pos like this, would preclude them from ever amounting to anything. Followers are like the Beatles vs Monkees. Make your own statement, image. Be an innovator, not an imitator... the jag has been done. If you buy a relic'ed one, you are doubly douchebaggy.
***** ^+1 I have had several 800+ dlls guitars but I have never paid more than 300 dlls for them because I consider it a stupid investment at least on my socioeconomic level where I know I'm not ballin' and I can invest my money better; the thing is that some people is bout that cash life and they buy it new because 900 means nothing to them since they got fast cash flow...I would not really save and buy specifically for a guitar since it would not add nothing more to my life than a 200-300 guitar... what's the point of having a 1000 bucks guitar if pretty much your whole closet is worth less than 200 bucks lol #prioritiesfirst #straightup #overprice
No you couldn't, because Kurt modified his. This model has better pick ups, an adjusto matic bridge, grotoh sealed tuners etc etc. Upgrading the squire Jags to this sort of set up would cost a bomb, same with the Mustangs. I also don't understand the stigma behind relicing either, who gives a shit what people want to spend their money on? It's an aesthetic choice, it's like getting mad at someone for buying a black pickguard as opposed to a white one. Buying a signature guitar is in no way an act of imitation or trying to be someone you're not. Even if it was, who gives a fuck, truly? I swear, most guitarists have to be some of the most pretentious, obnoxious people on this planet. All this talk of originality and being yourself whilst spewing out the same emotionless blues/metal noodling that every other guitarist does.
Empyrean Learn to read, know-it-all douche. I said a *REAL* one, meaning original, not butchered like Kurt's. Your are the people you are complaining about. Look in the mirror idiot.
I know what you mean about the smell. It's because the guitar is finished with nitrocellulose, which is the period correct finish. Polyurethane is the normal hard lacquer. The missing screw isn't standard. Mine isn't missing it. PS. Metric is an infinitely simpler mesurment system. Nice video. Oh, and the bridge is an after market black chrome tune-o-matic. It was just like that on his. The original fender would've just had a chrome jaguar bridge
the reason why the bridge dosent match is because Kurt put it on as soon as he got the guitar That is what iv been told and researched but i could be wrong but they did relic it to his model great vid as always
You just gave me an idea for a guitar. I have the ability and parts to do it. I'll take one of my old strat copys and put buttons and switches all over it. Even on the headstock. I'll sell it to the Cheap Trick dude.
