Even being homeless and her hair all knotted in a sloppy bun, you can tell how pretty she is. Her demeanor is like a little angel. If this is how she is as an adult, I can only imagine how sensitive and sweet she was as a little girl. She was traumatized by her crappy upbringing, probably takes drugs to control her anxiety now. I pray she gets help, she has so much potential.

I'm pretty sure that's why she is with a man that she said is at least 30 years older than her. My husband & I have 3 grown children that are all older than this young lady. This girl is only 24 yet her "boyfriend" is OLDER than us!! That's so bizzare. Also, the fact that she was only 18 when they started dating is really gross, IMO. If she was going to date a man that is much older, I wish that he would at least have been established and had a good career, had a home, helped her to get off the drugs & guide her in the right direction. I just feel like he probably clings to her to help him because he most likely manipulates her. She did say that she saw her parents fight when she was little & she saw tons of awful things growing up. Usually when girls see that, they don't choose the best partners. This is beyond heartbreaking. 💔

@ryanthompson4940
@ryanthompson4940 Год назад
Unfortunately intelligence has no bearing on being an addict or getting clean. And from personal experience and what observed going in and out of sobriety before it finally stuck ...the more intelligent you are the harder it is to get and stay clean. But on the flip side once you get clean you can turn your life around incredibly fast.
@linde8160
@linde8160 Год назад
@@ryanthompson4940 I partly agree with you. I also experienced that intelligent people tend towards addiction. But in my opinion they also have a better chance to reflect and understand why they are doing what they do even without a therapy. To have that moment of flipping the switch. But there's also a biological component, unfortunately. For some people, it is much harder to become and stay clean because of the way their brains react. I guess it is based on how you were programmed in your childhood. If you were given toxic or unconditional love. If you had to fight for being in a state of relaxation and comfort. For sure, this is complex.

She has not even been afforded the possibility of recovery from the chains of her addiction. If she was given the chance to to into a rehab program that deal both with her addiction as well as her lifetime of trauma she might be able to lift her eyes up probably for the first time in her life in sobriety, and see the real opportunities she has to live a more productive and drug free life. God bless you Mark for all you do to bring these issues to light and hopefully guide the political decision makers to provide more funding for dealing with the needs of these young traumatized addicts on the streets. I've been away from this channel for few months because my mom was dying and she died a week ago. I was her sole caretaker. She was still able to take care of her personal needs but was a hermit basically and couldn't drive. She fell a couple months ago and broke her back and it was downhill from there....So I lived with her while I raised my daughter and never was able to move on bc one thing after another happened. Anyhow she got us trapped in a cult when I was a kid. I'm happy I faced my traumas and feelings toward her over the years. There's certain level of accountability that my mom refused to face within herself and is why she became a hermit. All these people on drugs basically have been so traumatized as kids. It's hell of a tough job to heal yourself but it's possible. It was unbelievably hard to face my mom all these years but I became at peace with her in the last few years. Nothing will come of your life unless you face things head on. Drugs are just a distraction. But I feel sad for people who have had it so hard that it's nearly impossible to come out of that self induced hole. The one thing you need to do is take your own power back from whatever or whoever you gave it away to. Self accountability is literally the only way to come full circle and heal.

Wow. After watching hundreds of these, I'm not sure I've ever felt so bad and wanted to help someone more than Ashtyn. Because she seems so genuinely good on the inside still, but so helpless at the same time, because of the firm grip addiction has on her. God. I wish I could clone myself, so that one of me could stay with my family and raise my sons with my wife --- and the other me could go try to help all of these people. 99% of these people were just deprived of love. And a part of me thinks that SOME could be saved by love still, especially the young ones; maybe they're still salvageable and able to be saved. But maybe I'm just being naive. Either way, I wish I could befriend all of these people and help them take accountability for themselves, love them, and help them climb out of the dark. I wish I could have came to this realization before I started my own life. Instead, I now try to take these lessons and apply them to my own boys, so that hopefully I can provide them with an upbringing of love, so that they never have to travel the dark paths that so many of your interviewees have, Mark. Keep up the great work brother. What you do makes a difference. This type of awareness is what the whole world needs to see and know. Because maybe they'll want to help OR they'll want to raise their families and lead their lives better. That is the hope.

Just please don't get pregnant!!! edit: Although Ashtyn is only 24, she's already experiencing what most would consider rock bottom. She's in an extremely vulnerable position and I fear for her safety. When asked what her biggest fear was, she said "death from an overdose" which is good bc a lot of people in her situation just give up all hope of ever getting off drugs and living a happy, healthy, productive life. I'm curious why she can't stay with her boyfriend, unless he's homeless too. 30 years is quite a huge age different between them but that's her business--i just hope he's not taking advantage of her or forcing her to do anything that she doesn't want --or worse. Ashtyn! - You probably won't ever read these comments, but your story had me close to tears & I'm so so sorry. Ashtyn radiates sadness and hopelessness throughout. While she appears thoughtful and self aware, there is very little hope of chance she can recover from the only thing she has ever known her entire life. Listening to her, and many of the others interviewed here, it is clear that generational addiction has its roots in genetics. Fentanyl has remapped the neural synapses of these addicts, and this alone makes it virtually impossible for an addict to be free, and clean of the drug. This is the most evil of drugs to ever hit the streets. At least heroin is a plant derived alkaloid, but this synthetic CCP manufactured death-blow flowing through the open border is a weapon against Americans.
@jenniferlaine3817

I wouldn't agree that it's 'clear' that the intergenerational transmission of addiction is rooted in genetics. If anything, Ashtyn’s story challenges that because of the different path that her sisters have been able to take. I think that the answer is a lot more complicated and involves genetics, intrapersonal coping capacities, trauma history etc… All I know is that the solution starts with protecting the children. We save one generation of kids and things could be so different.

I truly appreciate a lot Mark asking the question time and again in each interview "what would you have done differently if you had chance" and it only serves one purpose: most of these people never had any possibility to even dream about a different life. Let alone chance or opportunity, they never even had a chance to imagine a different situation for themselves. their imagination about themselves so crushed. I kinda know how it is. And Mark asking them the question, they probably see themselves in whole different light for the first time. Powerful.

For people like Ashtyn, would it be possible for a hospital to keep her for long enough to get sober? By helping repress withdrawal symptoms etc. Would it allow her to find new perspective and turn her life around? I'm assuming she would ask for help if she could, am I wrong there? She did go through withdrawal for 7 days on her own, so she clearly is strong-willed. How do people like her get out of a life like that?

@ExpatScoti

Skid row has become a focal point for people like her in part due to the amount of services available there. Many, maybe her also go to get treatment and end up back on the drugs living on Skid Row. When a person does get over the withdrawal stage then they have to contend with the issues which got them there to begin with and if there is little or no support it can be near impossible t stay off long-term. Going from being not just high but what that means into regular life with no friends or family beyond the addicts a person has been around and trying to be accepted by other people is very hard. Maybe get a job, McDonalds perhaps and an apartment and then work that job every day and go home to nobody and with a future of working potentially a poorly paid job in a shitty apartment. The idea every day that life can get incredibly enjoyable is only one hit away at all times and any friends a person finds are more likely those who use narcotics. That strong will needs to stay day after day and year after year. It's incredibly hard to sustain without assistance. The assistance which can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars while having someone who will be there to care for the person any time they relapse or slip.

You need to be psychologically ready to quite the drugs. Otherwise you'll just go back. Trust me it took about 6 times before I finally left the life. It took something life changing for me to finally make the decision to really make a go of it. But to your question, yes there are programs out there to aid in the process of detoxing and then rehab... I would imagine in the area she lives in that there must be programs of that type. Again though, they will only work when she is ready to leave the lifestyle behind her. It's an unfortunate reality that in many instances, before that time comes, unrecoverable trauma or death comes first. It's a hellish lifestyle. One very difficult to get out of.
@pascato01
@pascato01 Год назад
@@ExpatScoti isn't it interesting that, if what you say is true, assistance can cost that much money when in reality the biggest part of it is is a person spending time looking after another person? I know nothing about these subjects so please point out my naivety wherever present. As for your other point, is having a job, alone, and an apartment not infinitely better than being mentally trapped? I'm of the belief that contentness can be found in any situation where your mind is not so impaired as to allow for meditation, reflection and development of your intelligence. Literally just read books, stimulate your brain, and an apartment and a job at McDonald's could be a good life, no?
