Andrew was raised in a stable home; his external circumstances weren’t the cause of his drug addiction disease. Andrew was naturally curious about drugs and was hooked on pain killers in high school. After several attempts in treatment, Andrew went on to sober living and found his purpose in helping other addicts get into treatment.

I do everything I can to show the people I work for that they made the right decision in hiring me, I wont take an opportunity for granted. Race had nothing to do with it. I've never waited for the world to do anything for me in recovery, I stopped living in fear and became willing to try just about anything. The universe will put the opportunity in our path, it's up to us to catch the ball and run with it... Growing up my family was far from wealthy, but it is true that we weren't hungry. @AN-999
@AN-999 3 года назад
People look at it superficially. To me weed is no different from Heroin and no different from cocaine. Before you jump into conclusions, i'm not referring to the psychoactive chemicals, the "high", the mental or physiological side-effects. I'm strictly referring to the mindset of the consumer. An escapist mindset; A coping mechanism. It all starts off at a social setting; to look cool, or to experience....but before you know it, it's become a habit, and then a necessity. Entropy! So, when i claim weed is a gateway drug. I'm referring to a person, who smokes joints to relax,....etc. then that person needs that joint, but keeps lying to himself "i'm not an addict" "It's not like i'm smoking crack" The fact stoners say this to reassure themselves, shows you, deep within - subconsciously - they know, psychologically...they are no different to a "crack head". Then tolerance builds up, and it gets harder and harder to satisfy that urge to escape, to cope, ....etc Then it's ecstasy, cocaine, ........etc I smoked weed for 5 years....heavily. i was conscious of its hold. But only towards the end did i really become conscious of the fact, i was trying to escape. Then cocaine. For 2 years. Very conscious throughout the 2 years of this "self-sabbotage" And escapism. But... you only truly realise it. Once you give up. Quit. You were in a coma. Your thoughts, ideas,....etc it was a coma of a delusional individual, trying to escape.

He was able to hide his addiction from his family from fear of neglect because he was brought up in a model family. Some people are so afraid of neglect especially from their own family. They are afraid that they will no longer be accepted.

I also had a good childhood and never was abused. For me it was a choice to start doing drugs, I wanted to see how it felt. Once I did opiates though I got addicted hardcore. It doesn't matter where you come from, how rich or poor you are, drugs don't discriminate.

I always wondered why drug addicts would do that to themselves......i probable thought they were just stupid....I looked at them and always said to myself that at least I know I will never to that to myself and become a drug addict...not a clean cut healthy positive guy like myself......I had a great life with everything a person needed and great parents and family and more or less a perfect life.....But I was too young to have the wisdom to think to myself that maybe something happened in that persons life that caused so much stress and pain in their life that a little drugs here and there helped ease the Pain of Life for just a bit....but then if you aren't careful, you start using a little bit more......and some people are extra sensitive and feel way too much coming from this painful world or painful lives and slipping into drugs to ease the pain eventually spirals out of control and you are basically screwed and become a drug addict...Trust me, it can happen to almost anyone that you would least expect....all I want to do is quit, but I can't

I have 10 dogs....they are my best friends and I am with them full time 24 x 7 and I guess they keep me going forward because I have to be responsible enough for them to have a good happy free healthy life, so I have no choice but to get off my butt and go to the the butcher and get them fresh meat every couple of days and take the time to feed them and play with them and walk and run them.....my dogs are gifts from God to save me from myself

At least I never used heroin or pills and never touched a needle and I never will.....The only way I think some people can get off drugs is to give themselves over completely to God and Jesus and that is my last and only hope
@myles208

MyEcoLife no sorry but this whole god Jesus thing is only applicable to yourself. Don’t say “the only way to quit is to find god” because it’s a load of crap. Not everyone believes in god (no proof that’s why) so that won’t work for everyone.

시발 Smokable form of coke is worse than heroin. Had friends who where using just for for 2-3 months, they sold a car, house and eveything else. Spent about £50-80k in just few months. So really - is it worth it? Not to mention most crack addict mix it with H, to take the edge of. And speedball is worst of the worst... You will sell your own mother to get another fix. Trust me. Don't event think about it, not even about this "one time". Because this "one time" is what make the difference between human being and a monster.

I have a VERY close story to yours and now im on methadone and just wish I could smoke pot once in a week or so to get rid of the HUGE urge to consume something that alters my mind state. Being sober is just so FKING BORING and I'am now doing everything "right" but I just wonder if the abyss that pulls me in at all times goes ever away. I also kept up appearance and was doing guard work for 8 years, never sober, not a single day. Then I had a injury and the docs found out while operating my shoulder that I had some kind of bacteria that usually goes straight in the heart and kills you. The docs told me how close to death I had become and I told them everything about my addiction and got help right at the same moment. If I didn't get to the methadone program so easily I would now be living in the very rock bottom or dead. Now taking it one day at a time and just trying to find ANYTHING that makes me wheel even sorrow. Feels good to type up summary of my use so thanks for giving the platform and telling people not all addicts are jobless skeletons without a brain.

Pretty scary stuff. He sounds like a super high functioning addict. Normally very intelligent. Which is even scarier because they should know better and really they do know better. Maybe they are so intelligent that they have a false sense of cockiness that drugs would never become an addiction for them. That they would be the exception because they're smarter

I am one of those addicts that keeps up a good full time job and appearances overall. I'm told im very intelligent for my whole life from various sources and I can assure you, we know very damn well how bad we are destroyng our future but NOTHING trumps the feeling when you shoot up high doses of strong opis all the time. I have seen a lot of intelligent people using opiates just because they give you some peace from this hell-hole called earth and its mundane bullshit. I'am now on methadone and "getting better" but I know in my heart that I will never feel happiness like people without these problems.
