A story of one family's loss to fentanyl poisoning, recorded during the DEA Family Summit on Opioid Overdose and Fentanyl Poisoning.
Naloxone, the active ingredient in 4mg Narcan and higher dose 8mg Kloxxado, along with many generic versions, can reverse an opioid overdose if administered quickly enough. Some areas have Naloxone available for free. Google it.

i'm so sorry for your loss. Spencer's story is similar to mine, but i was the lucky one, in some ways. I was a victim to molestation when i was about 13 years old. Started drinking and taking ecstacy and ketamine shortly after that happened. I was kicked out of school due to drugs, and was hospitalised about a year later due to an overdose. I hadn't told anybody about being sexually assaulted until I was 16. I finally told the police and my family everything. My life changed completely after that, and i am currently involved in a court case against the man who abused me. I am doing so much better now, and I have stopped taking drugs. I am happy. I was also born in 2005, and I feel like I have a lot in common with Spencer. I can't even imagine the pain you are going through as a family, and i wish you well. I hope you heal, you are good people. RIP Spencer

My girlfriend of 7 years and the mother of my 2 year old son passed away from a fentanyl overdose December 11th 2021. She was only 28 years old. Her mom found her lying face down in her bed. The pain of losing someone so unexpectedly that you were so close to is indescribable. She was my best friend and I feel like a piece of me died with her that day. There's an emptiness inside me that will probably never go away. As hard as it is to deal with, I can only imagine the pain her mom must feel every day, especially being the one to find her dead. Me and her mom still talk and have a good relationship and our son has since been adopted by a wonderful family and I see him on a regular basis. I am so sorry!! As a parent losing your child is the worst thing you can go through. The first year I was in a fog. As the dad said lost all my passion. The second year was just as hard as it seemed like my support was waning and everyone just went back to their lives and I was stuck in the past.The cycles of grief started numbness sadness denial, anger and then accepting only to have it start over again. Your life won’t ever go back to “normal” but you will become accustomed and learn how to survive in the “after” side. I will probably be on antidepressants for the rest of my life. But my anxiety only gets bad around her birthday and day she passed. There is life after loss it just takes time and patience. But I feel like a piece of me died too that day.

Jesus is the Answer. If you ever accept him as Lord and savior... thats us through prayer as him to be Lord of your life. He will make yhe different. I had a problem with my fentynl patch because of the insurance changr. I had a withdrawal because I couldn't get the patch. I call a pastor for prayer. It stopped the withdrawal symptoms. I have been with the patch for 7 years now. The doctors now are starting me on a new medication starting tomorrow. I have had days without the patch just forgetting to change it. So I just wanted to share.. Jesus is a solution and can change the heart, the desire. And even give healing. But a good ministry is needed for laying hand on the sick. First - my sincere sympathies to these grieving parents and Spencer’s sister. No parent should EVER have to lose their child. I know a little of that pain - I lost my just-turned 30 year old nephew to a fentanyl overdose, 7 years ago. Chronologically he was 30, but psycho-socially he was closer to 18, and he seemed to suffer from anxiety from a young age. Like Spencer, my nephew was from an intact, upper middle class family, and was a 6’ 5” good looking, gentle giant. His parents had provided therapy for him, and had gotten him into rehab 3 times. He had a full time job, and was highly thought of by his employer and customers. Just like this Mom, my sister found him. He often slept in their basement, depending on what shift he was working. He was already cyanotic when she found him. First responders tried to revive him and they took him to the ER, but he was gone. I don’t think even Narcan would have brought him back at that point. This family needs Group and individual counselling/ therapy, and would benefit from connecting with a Bereaved Parents and Families group, because those people know EXACTLY what you are going through. You will never be the same, but time will give your heart and soul a chance to slow down the bleeding and pain, and to put one foot in front of the other, for your own sake and for the well being of your daughter. Every Junior High health class in North America, and elsewhere, should be POUNDING home the message that NOTHING you buy on the streets is safe. Nothing. Sellers will tell you anything to sell (it’s from my cousin’s prescription), and they may even believe that, if that’s what they were told. Not Percocet, not Vicodin, not MDMA, not Xanax, NOTHING. You can’t even trust pot anymore, unless you grow it yourself. Show these kids the head of a pin, and tell them that’s all the fentanyl it takes (or less) to stop their breathing, and EVERYTHING on the streets is contaminated with fentanyl. The best drug abuse program outcomes, come from Governments (at ALL levels) who treat it as what it is…A PUBLIC HEALTH PROBLEM…and a mental health problem. Most kids experiment at some point, but the kids that get hooked are usually self-medicating to relieve anxiety and dull whatever pain they are feeling, and that pain my be completely internal, coming from an irrational view of their own self-worth, and of the world. We are talking about young people whose brains aren’t even completely developed yet (which they now know doesn’t happen ‘til approx. 24). When I think of all the wondrous and amazing things all these young people could have done in this world, and the loss of all that potential, not to mention the soul-crushing pain their families have to endure… it is beyond heartbreaking.

Thank you for sharing your family’s story. My brother struggled with addiction for 5+ years, starting in highschool and following him through adulthood. Due to his ADHD, his erratic behavior seemed normal to us. Eventually we found out about his addiction. After numerous rehabs and relapses including Heroine, Kratom, and most of all Fentanyl, my brother found a local rehab which helped him. My brother is now 28, 19 months sober, and alive. It can be brutal to wonder why your loved one would do this to themselves. You can drive yourself crazy wondering. The pain of losing a sibling or child must be indescribable. The hardest part is getting to a point of realizing that you don't have to have the drugs to live. You spend so much time thinking about where the next fix is going to come from so you're not sick( withdrawal) and it's just a vicious cycle. This fentanyl they're adding to nearly every street drug that's being sold and even those who have a really high tolerance for the drugs are dying because they have no idea what they're actually ingesting! I pray for the addicts out there still suffering and for this family to seek a group therapy to better understand the life of their son and the evil that even he couldn't have known. To Spencer's parents, it's not your fault! There's no way for you to have known. Educated yourselves and keep speaking out about Spencer and keep bringing awareness to the dangers of drug use. We need to shut the border down tight and vet every single head that comes across into our country! See Michaela's story also on this channel. Her mom is spot on with what she says! Grieve for Spencer but don't let his death be in vain. God bless you and may you find healing and comfort in your future.

This is such a sad story and I don't know why I keep listening to them. Maybe hoping someone would straighten out. My daughter who is an addict and is homeless on the street right now. I always wait for that knock on the door and there will be a police officer telling me that my daughter is dead. She's 38 years old dealing with crack and heroin I can preach and preach and preach and it never changes her. I pray every night that she will get sober. I don't know what else to say but God bless everyone

Sorry for your loss Wheeler fam. Spencer's story sounds similar to mine. Started smoking weed freshman or sophmore year. By the end of senior year I was a full blown dope fiend. Didn't even really realize it was happening. I was so used to the drug culture, I've always heard dope is bad etc but nobody really mentions anything about what full blown addiction is like. It sucks ass. Managed to get clean after freshman year of college since I failed out the facade came crashing down. Sadly I ended up relapsing 3 years later since I lost all my friends due to my decision to stay at community college one more year. Basically started when I turned 21 and my parents bought me alcohol to celebrate. That actually pissed me off because they were the ones to point me in the direction of NA and just goes to show they didn't pay attention to anything because alcohol is a drug period. Anyways, drinking turned to smoking pot, which led to taking subutex, which then lead to dope again. Managed to get clean again before leaving to university. Luckily I wasn't as out of control the second time. Finished university a few years later and now working as an electrical engineer and been clean since. I haven't been to a meeting in probably 7 years but you sharing your story makes me want to go because it reminds me that I need to show people that the hell of addiction doesn't have to be the end, there's light at the end of the tunnel

He had a career, wife, children, home, and loved the Lord with all his heart. He had an injury and was put in pain med. I honestly don’t think he thought about it for a second. I truly thought he never could have imagined becoming addicted again. He lost everything including his life. Three years ago December 13th I lost my 25 year old son. I can not even begin to explain this pain. It’s like my heart and soul are hemorrhaging everyday. Seek the Lord and never let your guard down. May God bless you and your family 🙏🏻❤️

I've been thru a lot more. as someone who made a full recovery and found unimaginable happiness know that your son would have wanted a full and happy life for you. life is too short to be angry or sad no matter what happens. you have grandchildren coming, promotions at work, way more to discover in this beautiful life, ect. talk to him every day as though he's still alive and start laughing and enjoying life again.

@yourmajesty122 Год назад
@@ldive i really feel like i can help you because i experienced my 10 year depression, panic attacks, loneliness, the most bizarre psychological problems, ect. so here's my best answer and I hope it helps: the first thing you have to do is BELIEVE IN YOURSELF AND START TRYING. anything you wanna do- just do it and don't pay attention to what anyone says. i got bullied really bad in school and with my anxiety i was afraid to just talk to someone. i always said i couldn't do anything. one day i said YES I CAN. when i was 20 years old and in college i became really outgoing, saw a great therapist(many before her sucked), started cross dressing, partying, drinking, taking risks, AND TRAVELING. when i started cross dressing all the popular guys who would bully me high school started hitting on me in college lol. i was completely free and it made my haters jealous to see me in my ecatasy of pleasure and unimaginable happiness. my teacher literally copied my Facebook when she saw all the fun i was having. as an autistic misfit i never imagined that could be me(I only got my first kiss at 21). i got rid of my old friends(they turned toxic) and i bought a one way ticket to Hollywood California and met a bunch of hot guys and great friends there. i continued to travel and it gave me something beyond the limits and brought me unimaginable happiness. I met lots of hot guys and smoked lots of weed and drank lots of beer. i focused 100% on having fun and even quit my job for a little bit and stayed in homeless shelters(Manhattan New York and Miami and small towns with no crime are safe to be homeless-be very careful where you choose to be homeless, as there are a lot of dangerous places). i even stopped talking to my family because they became toxic. during my autistic struggles they laughed at me and refused to take me to a psychriatrist. only surround yourself with positive people and positive things-YOURE WORTHY OF LOVE AND KINDNESS. find the things you love to do and immerse yourself in those things. for me it was traveling, partying, and MEN. I did these things for a while and now I live on a beautiful apartment on my own and am still immersed in the unimaginable happiness that I found. I think about those days every day. if need be stop talking to your family. this was a big one for but just because someone's your family member it doesn't give them a free pass to abuse you. I lived in a rich snobby town where everyone hated me so that's why it was so important for me to leave and find love and kindness. Mental illness and substance abuse often do not mix so be careful if you choose to do it. I knew I needed to but I was able to stop. I don't do ANYTHING anymore-not even weed. now I am learning Spanish, working out, reading books and trying to grow more as a person. YOU CAN DO IT!!!
