Good old VHS. Dolby on a domestic machine, very fancy. I’ve got a friend who still records TV programmes onto VHS.

Cool that they still use it.

Just a shame you can't hook up any of this old gear and just use it without a digital converter anymore

Lovely old machines, these. We had one from new back in the eighties, though being an early revision it did have issues with the clock disappearing due to the ceramic resonators on the timer PCB (the later blue type were fine). Also the time remain dots used to do a merry dance on ours (IC failure), and the tuner would drift! Bit of a basket-case, it was! I recall they later revised the mechacon board with a reduced component count. It's easy to tell, as the original board is slightly longer and has a circular cut-out to allow the reel motor to protrude through.

Yes this is one of my favourite vcr's from the 80's. Thanks for the info. The complete display has recently stopped responding to controls. So I am unable to adjust the clock or select tape counter Chanel change etc. It still illuminates brightly though lol

@@RetroGadgetMan That's interesting! Reading up on some of the common faults for this machine, there were issues with the transistor logic gate array IC's (type TA57). These were basically five small signal transistors in a zig-zag in-line package (ZIP), with a common emitter. They were prone to playing up. The other old chestnut is getting the 'Stop' button caught whilst refitting the front fascia.

Repaired many a 3v23 in the day , and the DER/Multibroadcast/Radio rentals variants , always thought the Ferguson version looked the best.

The buttons that operate the clock and tape counter have stopped working on my machine and the dimmer switch. I suspect the complete panel has been affected. Have you any ideas in where to start with that. Hopefully it's not a duff proprietary ic.

@@RetroGadgetMan I can only think dirty connectors , its been a very long time since i been in one of those machines , i know there used to be a fault that stopped the display totally , think it was a connector issue and that battery board . I did know the fault on yours straight away ;) caught me out many times , there was a led upgrade for it, changed many loading belts/rollers/capstan belts and many J/L heads and of course cassette lamps.

Good point, next time I have it open I'll clean cable connections. Lovely machines to work on.

I think these were also rebranded under various rental company names. I bought the same video recorder we first had (Hitachi VT-8000 top loader) to restore, hopefully I can pick up some tips from your video as I have never worked on anything more mechanical than an Atari VCS joystick!

Yes you are correct. I just looked up the vt-8000. Nice looking machine.

@@RetroGadgetMan I dread to think what condition it's in and how much work it will need to be functional again. Only bought it as a set piece and nostalgia, it was sold with faults described.

Most of the time it's just belts and the idler wheel rubber that needs replacing on machines from this time period. Hopefully they haven't turned to a sticky mess.

I see you so many places, I can't remember what where I first saw you was concerning.
