One of the great joys of garden scale railroading is the fact that you can run live steam. Most of the model railroading friends of the FC&W already owned or acquired live steamers during its run. In 2019, the first ever "Annual Live Steam Up" took place.

It was always intended to be an annual event, but in 2020, schedule conflicts prevented an official steam up from taking place, then the pandemic years effectively ruled out this event. The result is that this final steam up was only the second official one to happen. This is also the last official event of any kind to happen at this iteration of the Fern Creek & Western.
The railroad and all its equipment is being stored in a safe place so that, when the time is right, it will be rebuilt. This documenter hopes it will also rekindle the camaraderie that will most likely also go into hibernation as the various people involved with the FC&W will begin different chapters in their own lives.
The Fern Creek & Western was more than just a physical railroad that was built on the late Eric Child's property. It was a living and growing event; a circle of friends who genuinely enjoyed each other's company. I wish to thank Eric Child for the contagious positivity and encouragement of young people whose interest in trains was the only reason he needed to bring this amazing event to the world. Eric is already missed. This version of the FC&W could not continue without Eric, but I'm not sure any of us would have wanted it to. The next iteration undoubtedly will be one of the things in which our memory and love for Eric will continue into the foreseeable future.
