In mid-September, we had a chance to go to Santa Cruz to check out the progress being made on the Fern Creek & Western Garden Railroad. This layout is about six years old now, and if you've been following along with all the changes they've made here in the past, you might be surprised to find out that this year, with the Covid pandemic's effect on everyone's "normal" lives, Eric, Trevor, and Paul have rebuilt the entire railroad!
This video documents most of the changes, and then some. They wanted to simulate open house operations, so a small group ran the same number of trains that normally run during open house events, and the result was excellent.
The hard work they put into the redesign and rebuilding of this layout has made it one of the best running layouts I've seen in any scale. All the curves are broad enough and all the track is level enough that there were practically no derailments at all in 4 hours or more of running. Even the live steamers liked the track, and that's saying something!
