I love how Fern’s speciality is basically she’s a fully Automatic Anti-demon cannon. She’s about to make these demons feel how it feels like to rush a machine gun emplacement.

Stark is crazy. He takes an axe in the gut and it did not split him in half. We are starting to see why Eizen said he is scared of Stark >_< The Lightning Strike attack Stark used is the attack he practiced at the dragon village where he was cutting up the cliff.

The thing is Frieren has more magic spells than Fern but Fern excels on being efficient on magic. The faster Fern does everything the faster they can make Frieren move to another place. So Fern is trained to be very efficient in doing everything faster than Frieren can. Frieren is basically multi skills mage while Fern knows fast casting. While Stark is trained to be tankier and sturdier than Eisen. Because Eisen knows Stark can outlast anyone on the battlefield and can even overpower then. Its like Eisen made a Tanky Warrior out of Stark, since Eisen is a Heavy hitting Warrior himself.

It's safe to say the moment Aura spoke about Himmel, Frieren was thinking "You gon die nasty, now."

The end of Stark fight really reminded me of D&D's barbarian and how you can attack recklessly so secure getting a hit but knowing you are gonna get smacked back as well.

Stark has no magic. That lightning is just him swinging so fast and hard that it lights up the air.

Fern's leg-up on Frieren combat-wise being pure speed makes so much sense considering how little time means to frieren, she'll only rush if her life depends on it

I love Stark's finisher. They portrayed the speed of his attack very well. There is a frame holding up the axe and a second frame where he has already completed the strike. There is absolutely no animation of the strike itself. Magnificent

Fun fact: in case you missed it, the knight with the cape is actually Graf Granat's son. Also the Lightning Strike is the same technique that Stark was practicing on the village's cliff before he killed the dragon.

I keep forgetting Stark had a lightning strike, when Frieren asked to Fern to check on Stark and all the noise for his practicing it was there .... , and the lightning struck the demon before he even finished saying the spell LMFAO that's so cool

It may not sound as much in English, but the scales aren't stated to be a magic item with that ability. What is said is that the "Scales of Obedience" is the unique magic of Aura. In other words, the physical scales she holds are just Aura's magic staff/catalyst to channel her unique magic.

Stark is on par with present day Eisen. But the demon girl memorized the movements of Eisen in his prime. So Stark cant beat her at speed/techniques. But her body is weak af. So moves/counters that are supposed to be insta-kills just leave behind deep wounds. She successfully countered the 'lightning stike', but her hit wasn't heavy enough to deliver a lethal blow or completely prevent him from doing the 'lighting strike' move.

It's funny that you say that Stark is mad out of Iron. His name is German for Strong while his master Eisen's name means Iron. With Eisen being frightened of Stark we see that he is Stronger than Iron. With more experience he will be, like Eisen told Frieren, an incredible warrior. (Others have posted the translation for several names before.)

Yes, Stark *IS* tough. He was basically trained by a block of granite with a beard. If he learned nothing else, he would have learned how to be tough.

Nah Madhouse cooked to the last details, from Stark putting on his jacket to fren cat walk and her taking off the jacket is crazy. The budget for this anime must be over the moon for them to do this perfect of a job

some play with the names, most of them are german words: - frieren - to freeze (a bit of a cold personality, so good match to the name) - fern - remote / distant (suits her well) - stark - strong (while true I don't see the strength yet) - himmel - heaven (funny to visit heaven in heaven) - eisen - iron - heiter - bright - flamme - flame - lügner - liar (also good match to the personality) - draht - wire (and uses wires to kill...) - linie - line (in a way she is pretty simple like a line) as for the anime: originally I thought it's a bad idea, following the char after the demon king is dead, but after watching the first episode I was hooked. Easily the best in the last few years. I like it a LOT more than any other including beloved hits like 1piece, demon slayer.

Makes sense if Stark is made of iron, he was trained by Eisen after all.

Rather than killing them, Frieren choosing to use Nullified Magic on those undead. she holding back fighting that Undead because she knows them, on the time she see the neckless on those undead. Maybe if it wasn't the person she knows she can kill them without any hesitation. Its super great when she holding back because of himmel

The necklaces are family emblems. They're all knights of that kingdom, and it's implied Frieren knew them when she saw the necklaces and got angry at Aura😅

i love how they done this battle, Fern is winning or had the upper hand while Stark struggles and make a comeback. if youre a gamer, Fern will hype you up but Stark will make you yell at the end.

Stark feels like a tank that's afraid of getting hit. Or a fighter that doesn't realize his class should actually be a tank.

I mean, as long as you keep getting up, as long as you never lose, they never win. Solid strategy if you ask me.

The whole episode's directing and storyboarding was made my Kouki Fujimoto, and it was his first time doing it for an entire episode. Fujimoto animated a large amount of stuff. For reference, he animated JJK's Maki raising his glasses in the 1st OP, Megumi's running and demon dog sequence in the 1st ep, Chainsaw Man's the part where they're dancing in the OP, Denji running away from the zombies in the 1st ep, a big amount of MHA's S3 like Red Riot's episode and especially Deku vs Gentle Criminal.

Fun detail: Strak means Hard.

The lady demon Stark fought made the mistake of choosing whose style to copy, Eisen's style relies on his brute strength, while she does not seem to have much strength herself. She probably would have done better with a short sword, rapier, or daggers. Just personal anime-only observation, no manga or LN knowledge here

Madhouse is killing it. From the disney princess moment in overlord to this. Lots of great animators worked on this like Yutaka Nakamura, Shun Enokido, Hironori Tanaka and more so expect more great animations. AOTY imo.

Mad house went all out for this anime, they want to come back 🔥🔥🔥. Even in the manga this fight not that long and not that detail, i mean if mad house want they can do this fight and frieren fight in 1 episode. But they don’t, and they extend it with super quality. Stark has some pretty good battle instincts, but he has too little confidence in himself. He actually chose the best move to win that fight. Having seen this scene so many times in reactions, something I noticed is Linne, for all that she copied Eisen’s technique, can’t really control it like he would. Whenever she summoned that axe, it always takes her a moment to get it under control; usually she uses this to start spinning it around and building up momentum to add weight to her attack, but if you’re looking you can generally see it drop for at least an instant. Furthermore, each ‘heavy’ attack she landed on Stark was a downward chop, generally after jumping, spinning around, or both, all to add more momentum and weight to the blow. Now compare their final clash: _Stark_ ran in and went high, forcing her to swing that heavy axe upwards, with no real time to gain any momentum before hand. Since she’d been beating on him the entire time, she figured she’d just knock him away again, or just kill him outright, but this was literally the weakest attack she threw during that fight. All because she insisted on beating him with his own master’s technique.

If the one that swing the axe is Eisen, Stark could've probably died. It just that Linie is too weak to deal enough damage to chop him in half.

Stark does damage proportionate to Max HP for sure lol.

4:22 I figured Stark’s moment would be funny, but not pathetically funny. The buildup had me thinking he would try and sound cool, only to sound corny to Fern, and she’d call him on it. I still laughed, but I have to kind of kick myself to have expected more from him. I have to remember that he’s more along the likes of Usopp or Chopper, unashamedly cowardly.

The huge mistake Linie that mimicing warrior she can only mimic skill only. and that why Stark flashback hit so hard. what makes you warrior is not about skill, but about way of fight, a phylosopy of warrior, a role of warrior, A tanker. warrior never fight for win, warrior fight for buy a time to cover and tank. and by those Liene lost by raw stat. Even she land critical hit she can not penetrate stark. even on any game you chosing warrior because of raw stat not skill.

Ngl Stark's Lightning Strike made me thought something was off with the animation, as if they skipped a frame. But no, it is, literally and figuratively, a lightning strike. It was THAT FAST, that the explosion and sounds came after a second or so.
