The only time I've seen an F40 was in Milwaukee by Lake Michigan during a nice summer day. The day at the beach was nice. The sound coming from that car was amazing.
Interesting idea, but wasnt the F40 lighter than the both the Mclaren F1 and the Ferrari FXX even with 2 turbos! Thanks for the info on BMWs plans with turbocharging smaller engines, not sure that a 4 cylinder FI lower revving engine(cant see it sounding anything like as special as the current V8 or even the previous i6) will temp me to get the cheque book out., but we will see.
Jean Pierre Van Rossem had a lot of F40's and lost them all. I remember the F40 as a kind of gocart. but just fan-tas-tic. Right before I had my driver's license in '89 I had the chance to be passenger in an F40, and I felt partly how the driver felt, because of its directness. I don't know about the 430, but the man might be right. We made it, we need all this stuff now. And a Lotus, etc. just took it out again, and are stuffin' it in AGAIN! Everything comes back and forth
In the UK I have seen one for £180,000 in good condition but they can go all the way up to £300,000 depending on mileage/condition. The F40 is the ultimate drivers car. The Mclaren F1 follows a close 2nd and the Veyron, about 100th.
True, but back then there were way fewer safety regulations and you could have a sports car that was this light and went that fast. The F40 is probably my favorite car of all time, but the ZR1 you can drive every day comfortably and safely, the F40 is a race car for the street man.
same, take the F1 any day, remember it is still the fastest naturally aspirated car in the world i.e. with no turbos orsuperchargers? and its cool

F40, F50, F60-Enzo, F70- It is expected that the V12 on the F70 to deliver not more than 750 hp. This output will help the car to make the 0 to 60 mph sprint in less than 3 seconds and a top speed of 235 hp. Ferrari limited the Enzo at 390 units. We expect that the F70 to be limited at 300 units and be priced somewhere at $700.000.
I've been reading all those comments and I can't believe most people care about is "Top Gear is better" rather than decdeing which Ferrari they would choose. Top Gear is Top Gear, they have huge budget and edit videos to such a level that a Daewoo can look amazing. Autocar is just doing their job, carry information to the viewer. This is why I watch less Top Gear nowadays, just in case I become one of those Top Gear fanboys bashing any car video they see.
I was fortunate enough to drive an F40 yesterday. It's a car that's like nothing else on the road. It's not about luxury...that's not why you buy an F40. You buy an F40 for the most pure, intoxicating, emotional, and exciting driving experience. Ever.
Good Video. He does an excellent job of breaking down the finer points about the legendary F40. Wether you like Ferrari or not, one have to respect the F40.
i like how they used to make ferraris louder back then if u look at the f40 and f50 its like it has a straight pipe but the 360 or f430 sounds way less agressive
@AnonymoussourceL0L dude the ZR1 isnt about having a fancy interior with carbon fiber and alcantra everywhere. the only reason you can go that fast for that cheap is sacrificing a bit when it comes to amenities or looks at least on the inside.
@SharkYSharK2240 not really, considering that there are only 2 or 3 production cars that can outrun a mk6 cobra in a head to head drag race, and none of them are under $200,000 with the exception of the atom.
basically yeah. i mean, some people who buy those cars probably can drive them pretty well. but if you made super cars such that most people could afford them, then there wouldnt be anything special about them. The whole point of a Bugatti Veyron is that its currently the pinnacle of automobile technology, And whether you can drive it well or not, thats really damn cool.
those tifosi don't even know where the horse from the Ferrari symbol comes from, neither do they know which teams actually developed Formula 1 into the worlds technically most advanced motorsport from its simple origins the Ferrari symbol originally was painted on the airplane of the italian WWI ace Francesco Baracca, who was from Modena.
bugatti was basically rebuilt from ground up by VW who bought the brand in the early 90's, they were focusing on exclusive/limited high performance vehicles.. from what i read the whole process designing/ engineering the veyron cost 400 million... but they also said they are not making a profit nor losing money,, the veyron was to set a new name for bugatti in the supercar market...
and it's also practically undrivable for ordinary drivers when it was released the Ferrari F1 drivers said it was crazy to allow such a sensitive machine be sold to non-racecar drivers Michael Schumacher has said the F40 demands very much from the driver and non-professionals won't be able to extract 40 percent of its potential on a racetrack, of course he loved it since he was in the group of selected few who KNOW how to drive most F40 owners are given lessons by Ferrari
No... the F430 was after the F360. Few months ago I was looking at this F430s a used one. A 2008...the price tag was at 135K dollars...a little bit too high for me. But this cars are super nice and for sure, when you drive it...it's just you on the road.
I knew someone who had an F40 and he told me to come back another day for a ride. I never did it because I felt bad just showing up for a car ride =). He had all sorts of cars but the F40 is the one that suck in my memory. (Even an F50 that was totaled by his two bodyguards who sneaked out on it and died in the accident, too bad).
What he said @ 0:55 has nothing to do with biased. It's just his own preference, deal with it already! If he likes Toyota Yaris more than McLaren F1 it still wouldn't be a biased opinion. I think you just didn't get the point of the whole video. Reviews are always partly the reviewers opinions, they aren't meant to be 100 % objective. And that's what makes them interesting.
f40 price than - 193k price now - 300k come on guys. it is obvious that these cars are pure diamonds. the f40 is as sexy and as exciting as it gets. pure racing - just like the old McLaren F1. there will be nothing better. never ever.
that's not copying, these shows are about the cars, the only thing that matters here all the models, and the presentation is quite well done. F40 best FERRARI ever.
I would think the FXX would be the closest modern counterpart to the F40. The FXX and F40 were both designed to be full factory race cars. The F430 Scuderia is a race tuned street car. Actually, a comparison between the F40 and the Countach would be even cooler.
y r u haters hating on this guy....yes he is a geek about cars but lets face it.....the way that he gets exited at 1:25 im sure would be the same way anyone of us would if he drove that F***ing beast the one and only F40 twin turbo
Calling BS - Kerb weight (US cars manual says 1350kg Euro cars manual says 1235kg for Euro spec). 478 hp by contrast 430 Scuderia = 503hp 1400kg. So a US F40 is Scuderia performance and a European spec one -100kg....
you guys forgot the F50, the acceleration and the sound is unbelievable, not computerized like the enzo, I like the Enzo dont get me wrong, but its too computerized, it doesnt even have a 6 speed manual gearbox, what happened to the old Manual transmission? I prefer the Manual transmission over the 6 speed auto clutch manual anytime of the day, because you can feel the car more, and you can connect to the car more without going through the computer, you take charge, not the computer.
Yeah but the scud does not need 2 x turbos to generate that sort of performance. Happy that Ferrari are concentrating on awesome NA works of art than boosted cheap power.
@F1Oversteer These are very agressive cars & nice, loved them for time. But seems like a lota money for the buck. What is the car going into indangered state ?
@masedama Not at all, the McLaren could easily hold its own against a lot of modern supercars. Its about 4 secs slower over the massive 'ring lap than the Veyron, even with its rwd disadvantage.
"Brits on Car TV" - I think he meant to say all (or most) of those who appear on TV seem to mispronounce foreign names. Jeremy Clarkson got "Veyron" wrong; Autocar gets "Scuderia" wrong. OT: Some Americans can't seem to pronounce Irak, Nikon or Hyundai right either.
hehe sweet, @1aceves dude that car is from the 90's if i am right ? And its worth its price because its still beating supercars now + no electronic helper to get more grip, and still is amazing in handling on track.Because of its low weight.
250GTO from the 60's Daytona from the 70's 288 GTO/F40 from the 80's F50 from the 90's Enzo from the 00's Ferrari have built the most beautiful cars throughout the history of motoring. Forza Ferrari!
I’m not sure what my favourite Ferrari is, it’s between a few. The 1963 P4 The F40 The 250 GTO The 288 GTO The Daytona, Perhaps The 430 Scuderia Or even The Enzo Truth be told, there all astonishing.
Yeah £300'000 is about right. But Ferrari only ever intended to make around 150 F40's, but due to popular demand they made 1,315! If it wasn't for that a good F40 today would worth closer to £500'000, maybe more.
the reason he said that is because the f430 is more similar to the f-40 then the f-50 was.. the f-40 has a v8, similar to the f-430's.. while the f-50 had a v12..
Oh and comparing the stats between the F40 and the F430 is pointless. Thats like comparing the Lamborghini Countach or Diablo to the Lamborghini Gallardo and completely ignoring the Murcielago. The only vehicle built lately to compare to the F40 was the Enzo.
V8, twin turbo, 5 gear manual shift, no power steering, no power braking, no ABS, no Traction Control, no stability control, no airbag... ...only the brave!!!!
keep in mind that enzo himself told the engineers to de-tune,that`s right...DE TUNE the F40 to a more "predictible"478bhp for street use and out of care for his customers.that car can handle much more:)it is the best car.
New Ferrari's are technically brilliant, but the passion seems to have been partly replaced by mathmatics, the F40 was pure - car and driver, with nothing in between, no computers, e-diffs, or creature comforts, just pure driving pleasure.
simply because we chose NOT to. having knowledge about cars doesn't mean that you HAVE to do this job.or to HAVE to be a mechanic.isn't it logical enough?
my name is just my current car...its an early 2005 e46 m3 convertible. I doubt the M cars will go turbo, just in the same way as i doubt Lamborghini, Ferarri, Pagani will go there.......my last but one car was an EVO 7, (which i loved). But seriously nothing compares with a high reving NA 100+BHP/litre engine. Ferarri FXX if turbo'd would be easily 1300BHP...so why did they not do it? ever wonder why Gordon Murray decided not to turbo the McF1....even though they considered the idea :)
