The flagship Ferrari V12 has certainly evolved over the last 20 years, and we spent a day driving around in two amazing examples of Italian engineering. The 2000 Ferrari 550 Maranello and 2019 Ferrari 812 Superfast have descended from the same lineage of front engine, V12, RWD coupes, and I wanted to find out how similar and different they felt. With the world's most powerful naturally aspirated engine, the 812 is obviously...superfast, but the 550 only comes with a gated manual, and the more simple experience is just as special and rewarding. Driving these two cars back to back was a dream come true, I had so much fun, and really enjoyed comparing how the Ferrari V12 has changed over 20 years. The side profile on the 550(and 575) is perfection 10/10. 812 may be technically better but I just love the 550.

Both great looking cars and I’d love to take either one of them for a spin. With that said, I'd prefer owning the 550 over the Superfast.

I'm a simple man. I prefer the clean lines and analog character of the 550. The 812 looks like a clapped out C3 Corvette.

For me the 599 is the sweet spot. It is also a bargain even in today's crazy market.

I agree. Obviously I like all of those V12 Super-GTs but the 599 in my eyes looks the best, already has that insane Enzo-engine but it is still quite analog. And if you are very lucky (and rich) you can even get it with a manual.

I think I like the 812 better, but I prefer the 550 to its immediate successor the 599.

The "turny little knob" on the wheel is called a manettino :) Great production... this deserves way more views than it gets! Although probably helps that the V12 GT Fezza lineage are my favorite cars

I loved my 550 but for me it was just a bit underwhelming. Almost too much on the GT side. That said, it was fantastic.

Great review yet again Eddie. Your automotive knowledge and passion really shows. Hope you're keeping safe during these chaotic times. Just one suggestion that I feel, as a viewer, may improve your channel... If you can trademark your opening and closing. Like have the same soundtrack each time and open with your own "trademarked" catch phrase with a b-roll each time. Believe it or not, that'll make your channel seem like a bigger production than it really is. Trust me :) Other than that I got nothing. You are truly one of the best car personalities on YT. Thanks for providing such great content for us. God Bless brother.

Great subject...2 Ferrari GT V12s 20 years apart! I'd take my 550 6 days of the week because there's nothing like the gated 6-speed manual driver's engagement with the mechanical steering box while throttling the V12 to extract pure excitement (sorry, but paddles and electronic steering just don't do it for me, even at 787 HP!)...I'm very lucky to also have the Fiorano handling package on my 550 which adds another level heart-pounding driving experience, especially on twisty roads...but driving the 812 SF early on Sunday morning would be a blast to start the blood pumping!

I’m getting a little tired of hearing guys who drive other peoples cars to make a buck, knocking the F1 transmission: “how do I say this lightly…they’re ‘not good’” - qualify that please. I own cars with manuals. I own cars with twin clutch transmissions. I own cars with F1s. I LOVE the F1. It shifts like my racecars with sequential transmissions. The twin clutch is beautiful, but it is seamless and perfect. The manuals are, well, manuals. Sometimes I don’t want to shift, and I never want to miss a shift. F1s kick, they shift hard, they snap your head. I love them! For fun? Get an F1. 😎

It’s not 800 Bhp to rear tyres when launching. The systems slowly introduce the power to rear wheels. Turn the systems off completely and you will struggle to keep that car in the road. I sold my 599 and bought a 550 for similar reasons. Turn off the antiquated traction control on the 550 and 470bhp is enough! Trust me.

I think the 812 is an overly complicated driving experience. In 20 years, perhaps I'll look back fondly upon it, as I do now with the 550. The 550 is FAR less complicated, far cheaper to buy and easier to maintain. It retains *useable* performance in a 20-year-on modern world and even the looks aren't all that dated. Having just seen a ton of videos of the Gordon Murray car (updated McLaren F1?), which is a *three* seat super car with a manual (!) transmission and a four-cam V12 that revs to 12,500. It's only got about 600 bhp, but it weighs 1500 lbs less than the 812 or the 550.

The 550 is meant to be pure, to me the 812 is just a bit over the top for this kind of car. Bells, whistles, vents, loud, angry.

When electric cars make EVERYTHING slow, the 550 will still look classy and that other thing will loose it’s only redeeming quality- which is speed, because it sure isn’t attractive
