We went to the edge of the universe to fight emotions in the form of a bird lady. Meanwhile a crazy guy, that has swapped bodies after dying and claims to be your friend cause he got horny fighting you, absorbs the rest of the energy from a big crystal who was also a woman and then flies through space in the form of a dragon to find you. But yeah pictomancer is the weird thing. The people trying to deny pictomancer cause it “doesn’t fit in” are, as polite as I can possibly say this, fucking stupid.

If people tolerate Krile being considered one of Eorzea’s scholarly elite while attending lectures wearing a rain coat with cat ears, then they sure as hell can tolerate Pictomancer. And anything to incorporate more concepts from the best Final Fantasy game ever, I’m down.

I mean, ive been around long enough that i've seen people refuse to play dancer because it's "*insert whatever gay slur you want*" and even saw someone flip out because Red Mage has a rose theming because THAT was gay to them. Like....????

I sometimes feel a lot of FF14 players have never played an FF game before, it's so weird. The Picto thing is like players complaining about Solution 9, as though the FF series and FF14 itself isn't saturated in a mix of fantasy and scifi elements.

I was planning on maining picto and had no idea there was such hate toward it. And now that I know that, I am still going to main it. Blacklisting me for playing picto is doing me a favor - it means I never have to be in the same group as someone who is like that.

Everything about FF14 is a celebration of the franchise as a whole. You have jobs, locations, and characters that are callbacks to mainline entries and spin-offs. Krile is a FFV callback and her hooded outfit is a reference to Krile’s white mage outfit from FFV. If you want to get these references all over them are available on modern systems (except for FF13, I really want a FF13 trilogy HD remastered).

Okay, but if the quest to unlock Pictomancer isn't titled "A Relm Reborn," I'm protesting on principle.

I am 43 years old...My first FF game was literally FF1 on the old NES the DAY THE GAME CAME OUT lol. Since then, there's been a few in the franchise I skipped due to not possessing them on their corresponding platforms. Point is, FF6 is my all time favorite FF. To hear that there are players who don't understand one of the most iconic jobs origins and think it "doesnt fit" just tells me they aren't TRUE fans of the franchise😂

1:47 A good example of this in my opinion is that while I REALLY liked both the Garlemald and Final Days in Thavnair sections of the MSQ (especially the latter), they would be absolutely exhausting to do back to back for me without the levity of the Loporrit section between them. There are so many references to previous FF and SE franchises in FFXIV that it would take way too long to list all of them. I’ll share one of my favorites the deep dungeon Palace of The Dead is a reference to Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together (YoshiP has admitted to this being one of his favorite games) and the boss on the 100th floor is Nybeth Obdilord he is also from that game. They even borrowed his boss music along with the runes he uses when he casts spells. The only other FF game I played with this many references was FF9.

XIV also takes a bit of job inspiration form FF's sister series Bravely Default, which I'm assuming is also the case for picto since VI is the only other mainline FF game it shows up in. The pictomancer in Bravely Default II is Folie! And this is her character bio! "Folie arrives to Wiswald sometime after Elvis left and used the Earth Crystal to grow a forest within the town and around for material to create yellow paint, hiring a woodsman to gather the materials. Folie also murdered a girl named Mona with explosive paint and made it look like an accident, using a portrait of Mona to bewitch the girl’s father, Roddy McGranate, to develop means of reviving his daughter while using the by-product polluting the water for blue paint. Folie also used her paintings to place Roddy’s wife, Lily McGranate, and their friend Galahad under her control, keeping the former from halting Roddy and while having the latter guard Treetop Tower where she placed a forgery of the Earth Crystal in. From there, she murders the scholars of Wiswald, and drain them of their blood to use for red paint as she begins working on her mural in a cave she made her home in. When the Heroes of Light arrive and break her spell over Roddy, Lily, and Galahad, they track down Folie to her lair where she was working on her mural. She fights the party with the intent of adding their blood to her masterpiece, but loses her Asterisk as the cavern begins caving in. While the Heroes escape, Folie remained to complete her work and is presumed dead. But it's just a silly unserious job that doesn't belong in a series that has known how to balance whimsical lighthearted content and real, serious moments for decades I guess.

We need more cute and joyful jobs, how does a cheery optimist job that brings joy wherever it goes not fit this story to a tee?

Reaper was already the exact job I was hoping for, a scythe melee and/or a "demon hunter" melee, got both But what I truly wanted, for the second scouting, was a dual sword wielder or a twinblade wielder The fact that I'm actually getting what I wanted, both of what I wanted, and it's fast and hits hard and looks stylish as fuck while doing it, is the icing on an already platinum cake I cannot fucking wait to get my hands on Viper, and it will be my forever job

I always found the negative discourse over classes people want to play funny. I mean, its a video game. An electronic TOY. People are getting mad over what toys other people are playing with when it was their money they used to buy it haha.

I'll suffer no foul comment on Pictomancer. It's my favourite underrepresented job and belongs to my favourite character in all of FFVI 😤

In 6.55, Krile mentions Relm as an Archon of Sharlayan who created Pictomancy. It was presumably lost to time until Krile and by extension, the WoL will help rediscover it in Dawntrail.

I clicked on the video just expecting some "don't panic about job balance again please ffxiv discourse is cyclical enough" but wow I had never seen people be this viscerally toxic about pictomancer. Scholar I personally wish they leaned a bit more into the military tactician aspect of the job, especially since white mage is always looking to cannibalise any of the fey aspects of it for parts. I was fully prepared to make a comment about having to not always play my favourite jobs because of scheduling issues making finding spots in groups I can fit into often force me to adapt and fill to the role the group needs, but like, that's nowhere near this kinda discourse, there's always something in each role I like.

PCT - in VII, you have an animatronic riding an animatronic as one of the main cast - in X, a main cast character uses DOLLS to cast magic - in XIII, a chocobo lives in an afro - in II, a main cast character talks to beavers - in IV, there are rabbits in the moon - in VIII, the main female character launches her dog from her crossbow at enemies - in IX, a main cast character is all about eating WHAT THE FUCK ARE PEOPLE GRIPING ABOUT, PICTO IS FINAL FANTASY TO THE CORE, Relm notwithstanding. 2. Seraphism Yeah, they're mixing the visual identity of SCH (fae) and WHM (angelic/holy from ShB onwards). It's annoying but what can you do?

Honestly, I'm glad there are people that are saying "I'll never allow Pictomancers in my groups!" because it makes it incredibly easy to blacklist those people, so I never have to see them ever again. I don't want to play with people like that, and if they're just going to advertise it so plainly, then I am grateful for the chance to curate my gaming experience so easily.

On a brighter note, I’ve seen artists who don’t play this game geek out over Pictomancer because it uses real color theory (Red, Blue and Green are colors used in light, which combine into white light, while Cyan, Yellow and Magenta are inks used in printing, and combining those will result in black). I didn’t even know there was controversy about Pictomancer’s visual design

You say this but it’s been a thing for years now. Samurai was locked out of stormblood because it had no party buffs.

i'm not really sure why the gaze mechanic was taken off of dragoon either. it kind of makes me wonder why i should use high jump as a casual player, but i'm sure i'll figure it out when i get to play dawntrail

Anyway shoutout to the GOAT FF6. Cheers Alber. This is my first time being a part of a new expansion so there's a lot I have to be ready for. I can definitely say I'm not a fan of Astro's changes (though I acknowledge I might be in the minority there) and I still can't believe how untouched Summoner is with how almost insultingly simple it has become, but also like... I'll live? It's fine? There's so dang much to be excited about that I'm not really going to let choices I might disagree with get in the way of my fun. It's just funny how serious business this community tries to act when it's also the same community who lost their minds over Tia eating a taco. FF14 attracts all kinds, mostly for the better, but yeah.

My only issue with Pictomancer is the CGI of Krile using it looks so aetherial and cool to me, while the in-game animations appear more cell shaded. I'm not upset or boycotting it, but I do like the Krile CGI effect ARTSTYLE better. And as a SCH main...I'm fine with the ultra-angel-instinct healing form, honestly. I'm not sure I LOVE it, but I'm not going to hate on it, especially since it looks like a ridiculously amazing ability. Granted, I am old enough to remember - vaguely - when FF3 came out (though Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and FF7 were my first RPGs) But yeah, I just want people to be generally happy. No one is going to be pleased with everything. Ever. But a lot of things can appeal to a lot of people, and we can all enjoy sharing this sandbox together. See you in DT, Wesk! o/

Great video. Fully agreed, and as a longtime FF fan, it’s ridiculous to me to see people saying Picto doesn’t belong. I’ve been getting shit from some members of my FC for my intention to switch from Dragoon to Viper, because apparently that means I’m a moron who can’t play complex or demanding jobs. The bizarre elitism is really grating.

Thank you, this is such an important message. Ironically I love Summoner and Dragoon both for lore (yes I'm dragon nerd) and gameplay. I had weird ideas like if it's OK to play a job everyone seem hate and call dumb but I've grown out of it and just decided to play what I like.

So far Picto is the thing I'm most excited for in the new expansion precisely because that feels so Final Fantasy to have a Picto in the job selections. I don't know if I'll like playing it but I'm eager to start seeing it show up in groups.

I love how different pictomancer's aesthetic is from the rest of the caster role. The initial trailer for it had some extra non-game engine visuals at the start that threw me and clearly a lot of other people, but it would have been incredibly boring if we reached four non-limited casters and they still all had fire spells that look pretty much the same.

As a dragoon who dies all the time I must say I will continue playing in dungeons and raids , extremes and ultimates. It’s FUUUUUNNNN. But I will try other jobs in case maybe I’m an undiscovered Amadeus at them.

What job that are the most in demand when doing PF?

I can't wait to get my hands on Pictomancer/Black Mage change on release...I wasn't feeling BLK when finishing the MSQ for DT release and getting it to 90 but I am not sure what magical DPS I am going to switch too with it out. Pictomancer with the glam of sleepy pajamas does sound fun but with the change in BLK I might keep with my burn the world down purple mage look. the black mage ice changes don't effect the problems I was having with it but the layline upgrade will solve one of my problems.

100 percent this. Hell, the levity in FF games has led to some of the most memorable moments in gaming history to the point of longterm memes like the snowboarding in FF7 or just fond remembrance like the Tidas Laugh scene in FF10. There is so much in FF that screams, "Yeah, the world sucks right now but that doesn't mean you have to stay miserable." and this is one half of what makes these games excel as a series. Even FF16 had some nice moments purely for the purpose of making the player crack a smile or two, and then there's basically any time Zack is on screen in Crisis Core and this was all greatly beloved. Hell, nobody batted an eyelid at the Namazu or the Loporrits in FFXIV, so why is this the straw that breaks the camel's back? Saying Pictomancer doesn't belong in FFXIV is like banning fun in an arcade. There's a lot of different experiences for everyone and none are more valid than the other in that there will always be SOMEONE that loves a specific part of it, but nope, not that one thing over there, it doesn't belong here because the game is too easy and that makes it bad. TLDR: "No fun allowed in my dark brooding mmorpg with maid dresses, catfish and bunny folk, large cat men that sit like dogs, constantly naked raid groups." is a stupid mentality, people need to grow up because, to use a phrase from these types of people, they don't pay my sub, so I'm picking up the silly paintbrush whether PF likes it or not.

Hey @WeskAlber - Are you planning on bringing back the 1-XX series? My brother just recently started playing, and back when I started playing around the launch of Shadowbringers, your guides got me into a lot of jobs. So I was hoping I'd see something like that, rather than these "Here's your skills and your rotation for Level 100, good luck" kind of videos that I could share with him. If not, all good, but thank you for the time and dedication you put into those guides. They were my bible back then!

I was so confused by hearing you say how ppl say "pictomancer doesnt fit" As someone who has only played xiv and no other ff game i thought the job itself was kinda adorable and very fitting for Kryle. But i also had friends to tell me all about every job that hasnt been added to xiv from previous versions. I also really enjoy playing smn, dnc and ast as my main classes. I read a lot of flack for two of three of these a lot but like.... I like em and i feel im at least good enough at them to call myself average, i dont think im great and im sure i have room to improve somehow.
