FFXIV What Class Should You Play | New Player Guide 

I just want to point out to new players, that where the FFXIV community is almost entirely made up of nice and helpful people, there are still some snobby players that hate when you don't play their way. I just hope you don't feel discouraged to play a class or the game as a whole when toxic players treat you like trash. Find some friends or FC mates to guide you or practice in lower dungeons until you're confident in your skill, if need be. But again, a majority of players are willing to help you or be patient with you. It's a pretty good community.

I just started. It's my first FF game. Level 16 and really liking it, except for the unnecessarily complicated starting town layout. I've spent way too much time running around trying to find a way downstairs or upstairs.

basically "i love every class just play them all"...

I now get the "Floor Tank" thing! I was so busy bringing the pain on the final Dragon boss (Stone Vigil dungeon), I didn't notice the AOE marker underneath my character. Frostbite is a hell of a price to pay for tunnel visioning. 😂

The best tip for any new player is that picking a class at the beginning literally doesn’t matter all that much. At level 15, you unlock the other two city states and can pick up the other starting classes, so you’d be able to swap them out and experiment with them to see which ones you actually enjoy playing. I’d also recommend that you find a main class to play in all three of the major categories (tank, healer, DPS) so that you’ll be able to swap if necessary.

Finally saved up enough for a pc only need to buy the motherboard and ssd. Can't wait to play this!

For a new player, I really recommend starting with an Arcanist. 1. You start at Limsa, the city with the most accommodating Layout 2. Arcanist gain access to 2 Job at level 30, Summoner and Scholar and both jobs share levels means you level 2 jobs at the same time 3. Since you have access to both a Healer and a DPS you can switch to whichever suit your needs at the time, like, say, switch to Scholar for an instant queue pop on MSQ dungeons and sweet sweet adventurer in need bonus. 4. You gain access to 2 Shadowbringer Role Quest Chains at the same time, that means more exp and more story contents during your journey through the expansion, and you'd want to eventually do all 4 anyway

I recently came from WoW where I played an Arcane Mage. So I went to character creation, saw Conjurer, said "Ok DPS Mage" same as WoW. Got to about level 20 and said, "Weird, my DPS Mage sure has a lot of healing spells but not much DPS...." Got White Mage, said "Ok! Mage now we're talking, bring on the DPS!" Went into a group, people kept calling me a healer, I said "No I'm a mage!" the response was, "Let me guess, you just came from WoW didn't you....."

Thank you for your time putting this together. It's very clear and concise, no jabbering about with nonsense, just very much appreciated and this was and is very helpful, for me at least and I'm sure for everyone one else that's new to this game. Thank you most certainly for this!

A little backstory on Calendar and Deity. It used to matter in 1.0 and is a hold over from 1.0 for the benefit of characters that transferred and kept in as a feature for Role-play purposes. In 1.0 Deity effected a base elemental resistance bonus and Calendar effected a reward system that was never implemented. In 1.0 magic damage and physical damage had elemental alignment and elemental resistance effected how much damage you were resistant to of that type. For example, Ice or Fire damage. The system was re-introduced for Eureka content, however, it doesn't matter which deity you pick because there is no resistance bonus in Eureka outside of that provided by Eureka gear, items and Eureka exclusive mechanics.

Personally? The best experience i've had was with tanks. I started as Glad, and progressed to Limsa, i got Marauder. Both of them are extremely fun, because you're a beefy boy, so you can just pull the mobs and aoe them down and not die. It's hard to go back once you go tank

When I've done alts, doing leves/fates near the current level while queing up for dungeons really boosts XP (especially with early XP boost items). The highest level dungeon usually gives a lot of XP too :)

I'm so lost. I shouldn't be trying to get into a FF game, especially a MMO while high. I've been creating my character for half an hour and I'm still not done. Will I ever play? Who knows... It's my first FF aside from VII Remake which I only just got. This is only gonna get more confusing and long, right?

For very new people: It’s worth spending a good amount of time for your character creation. Also, pick a voice that doesn’t annoy you since you might hear it a lot during battle. (BUT YOU WILL NEVER hear it in a cutscene)

Red mage and dancer are my favorites followed by monk and scholar.

Sargatanas has been an AMAZING new player experience for me. The players here are so nice and supportive. Love my server!

Very helpful guide for new players. Only a minor criticism: you made it sound as if ARC leads to SMN OR SCH when in fact you get both.

I appreciate this video. I started playing back in January, and having now leveled a most of the classes to 50 I can say that I've seen a few "which class to play" videos which talk about how the classes play, but include things new players won't see for a while. Examples being, at level 51 BLM doesn't have Ley Lines or Enochian, at 50 MNK doesn't have a chakra gauge, etc. Your video goes over how the classes feel in general terms, rather than specifics and I think it works well that way.

I played on Sargatanas as a white mage back in around 2014-15. Been missing my lalafell character so looking to get back into the game ❤️ so excited for all the new content!

When I started I was advised to take Arcanist. You get a pet, DoTs, a little direct damage. When I started, they got heals, that may have changed. The best thing about Arc though is instead of graduating to a new job, they get two: Scholar and Summoner. Better yet, those classes use 1 exp bar so you level both at once.

Warrior plays like an absolute beast, my favourite job rn, berserk plus fell cleave spam mmmmmm

I just started however I'm leveling everything to 10-15 before making my decision to mainline a class. I just want to learn a bit about each class and profession while picking up a more broad experience of the game. I'm in no rush to hit endgame and I do want to experience a good chunk of concepts before locking in on my main play through.

Bard is a very good recommendation for beginners indeed. You get the safety of ranged combat without the limited mobility that comes as a cost to casters. Also to elaborate on the leveling part, "fastest way" is not a good mentality to have in this game, the MSQ is so important for a reason: this is a story-driven game, it's a Final Fantasy game, so don't skip cutscenes or dialogue or you'll likely regret it later when the story gets good and you don't know who half of these people are. This is very important. Though there IS a NG+ function to replay story missions, you're better off getting the full experience from the start.

I only started playing about a week or so ago. Picked Gladiator because of the classic hero-with-sword archetype, and later discovered that I'd made a great choice since the general consensus I've seen indicates that Paladin is the most beginner-friendly job. Now that I'm about level 58, I have to agree - lots of health, a simple three-skill melee combo, a two-skill AoE combo with great range, a single-target ranged attack for mob pulling, two Stun skills (one on global cooldown, the other off-global), and basic 'take less damage/deal more damage' buffs, not to mention a straight-up 'become literally invincible for ten seconds' buff. While I'm a bit hesitant to say this since I haven't gotten to the point where I've unlocked the 'mage' aspect of the vaunted Paladin Rotation yet, it's a very simple job and easy to pick up for new players. Sure, your damage output is kinda paltry as compared to most other classes (I unlocked Samurai, went to fight a mob and my jaw dropped when I mowed it down in about 10 seconds as compared to the 25 or longer it took as a Paladin), but it usually doesn't matter since you can take so much damage and when you're not in a dungeon with other DPSers helping you out, odds are you've got your Chocobo companion with you to pick up the slack. So, in short - if you're a newbie, I recommend starting with Gladiator due to its simplicity. I should also mention that before you go into any sort of dungeon, *make sure you complete all of your Hall of the Novice challenges.* It teaches you everything you need to know about how to play your class's role in co-op PvE content, so if you're not sure about how you should act while in a dungeon, walk up to any NPC named 'The Smith' (you'll find them next to the entrances of the first few dungeons and inside each of the three starting cities' Adventurer Guilds), and play through your challenges. *Do not skip them if you are new to the game.*

Returning player, haven't played beyond original content, no expansions. White mage and didn't have a clue where to start or what content was available with classes etc. Thanks for the overview, really helpfull.

Cracking video Brian, I'll be really interested in the Class Comparison videos. Just started having a dabble again with a couple of friends new to the game and went with Marauder to Warrior just because I love the aesthetic and Tank style. But I'm already seeing noticeable changes at Lv 10, nothing bad just surprising (would never have expected Overpower to be a no cost/no cooldown ability!), I'm looking forward to re-learning the class.

Something I don’t think you mentioned unless I missed it: Your starting location is based on your job. I started with Arcanist partially because I loved the idea of Limsa Lominsa, the coastal city. It sets the flavor for the first dozen or so hours of your experience.

Arcanist hands down, since summoner and scholar share the xp and level, you might as well play dungeon as healer and other thing as dps

Disclaimer: I agree and support everyone playing at their own speed. Its ok to take your time with msq, even in arr 2.0 and 2.x quests. Tea time cutscene with the sultana is waiting for you whenever you get to it. My comment is this: seeing what classes are available is super easy to find on the internet or in your job tab. Players tend to identify or connect with classes before they even play it. 3 great jobs that entice people though are locked behind the heavensward expansion unlock. Wanting to be a dark knight, astrologian or machinist does drive some players to rush all prior content to get to the class they want. I was like this. I wanted to acknowledge that if you do want to dark knight, astro or machinist, I strongly suggest you start as tank, healer or arcanist (unlock dps and healer at 30). Shorter queue times for all content will help you get through story faster. I would also warn against skipping too many cutscenes. Enjoy the ride even if you are in fast lane.

Bard is really easy to understand, so I think archer is a good starting class. Also you start in Gridania, which is less confusing than Limsa imo

Making the jump to FF after 14 years of playing WoW. Yours was the first video I saw for advice. Decided to go with Gladiator

Got into the game a few months ago, and I was very frustrated with how the melee DPS targets enemies, so thanks for the legacy movement controls tip. Makes it so much easier to avoid AOE (also sorry for any mystakes, not a native speaker)

Starting the Trial today! I have FF15 (yet to finish) and I just finished FF7 Remake, let just say I fell in love! I know each FF is different in its own right, but I can’t wait to see what FF14 has in store. So far I’m loving the character creator, although I’m stuck on which class to pick, hence why I’m here. I’m not use to play MMOs so I just want a class where isn’t not too overwhelming, but fun!

I played rogue in world of Warcraft, and you saved the best for last. I was thinking of playing a wizard type class or a rogue type, and having a rogue type class that seems to be similar to world of Warcraft makes this game more enticing. I haven’t played a PC game in almost five years, and I am really starting to miss it.

"Ranged melee" made me laugh. I wonder if Urtlinger is a ranged melee?

Great intro vid. Subscribed. I tried ARR when it first released and am interested in jumping back into the game to give it a try. Only got to the 30s on my dragoon so I'm debating whether to make a new account or continue leveling my old toon and pay for sub.

Fun fact; Rogues are excellent at kiting. My first time fighting Ifrit as a Rogue, our tank died and I pulled agro. I managed to successfully kite Ifrit in a circle until the healer rez'd the tank. I was so proud of that.

Just downloaded it today! And seeing what i should do and so! I'm super confused at the "Advanced" Section do i really need to upgrade to them? Because i was thinking of getting pugilist because im into like Fists and so (Ok that sounded wrong) But i'm into hand to hand combat. So do i need an "advanced" job? Will it affect my job or make me weaker in anyway?

Downloaded this game yesterday after over a year of watching videos like this and finally being able to buy a PC - so excited to start!

For Starting class for leveling and progressing while not having toooo long of a que time, Level a TANK class.. You will not have to wait too long for ques to dungeons, trials or raid stuff. Why do i say this (after playing FFXIV for many years): DPS que times are Awful and in some cases may have you waiting in que for an hour just to progress thru a Main Story Dungeon or Trial quest to move forward. DPS can be leveled up Via the Tower Mechanic quite quickly, but that doesnt unlock until later in the game. Healing Que times are almost instant, but in saying that it takes quite a while to kill mobs as a healer and in the case of White Mage, casting STONE over and over and over and over again just isnt that thrilling. Healing Class however can get leveled up pretty quick thru dungeon leveling and in the Tower Mechanic so this stands to reason that you should level a Healer after your First Class because it is soo much easier and less time consuming and less boring. The only class i would suggest to level besides a Tank would be as the OP said, but at the same time, not many people like the Pet class.. Reason for Arcanist is that it becomes the Scholar and the Summoner classes which Level up at the same time with your Arcanist, so you pretty much have a DPS or Healer, plus a pet to kind of tank for you, so good for leveling and Dungeon/Trails etc.. However, why i dont recommend it as the First class is that the Arcanist can level thru dungeon leveling and the tower mechanic (palace of the Dead etc) pretty easy which gives you 2 different options for leveling the class up. However the Tank will pretty much only have 1 option for you to level up and that is the Tower Mechanic which gets boring after a while, dungeon leveling is out of the question as the que time for a tank is around 10-30mins (depending on Shard) so to fill the gap there is not much.. So as a person who has played for many years and has a couple of characters on different shards (so had to start over again etc before they had content skip) I suggest a Tank be your first class to level, followed by the Arcanist, that way you will have a Tank a Healer and a DPS when you finally finished and all you would have done is leveled up 2 classes..

Tank/Healer classes are the best since they have the shortest queue time and you get extra rewards. Although DPS queue times are kinda short nowadays too. Even in the middle of the night queues are around 15 mins at most.

Archer (Later Bard) is best to start with Not only you're able to move while casting, you're ranged and have a permanent speed boost on top of basic sprint ability so you move fast without the mount. For first playthrough it's the best starter - and once you ding max lvl, you can do whatever you want so who cares :D

Wow hitting random on your Hrothgar enough times suddenly reminded me of Kimahri from FFX. I can just see him with spear/polearm in hand as a DRG : )

So do I need to max out multiple toons on the same server to farm end game gear past my cap? Is it like an account wide currency can I share them between servers?
