On the 20th anniversary of the launch of the Fiat Palio in India we take a spin in what was among the first hot hatches in India. And we have a special car, the limited edition Palio S10 which cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar put his signature on. With the 1.6 litre engine this was among the fastest cars on sale back then and, we discover, is still rather fast. This episode of Gone But Not Forgotten also looks into the history of Fiat’s Project 178 World Car and then we drive a car that is even rarer than the S10, the Palio Adventure which was India’s first crossover car. Based on the Weekend estate, this had raised ground clearance and SUV styling cues that made it very unique. We then pay homage to the legendary 1.3-litre Multijet diesel engine in the Palio Stile and wrap up with the fast, stylish and desirable Punto Abarth . Which sadly didn’t sell too well and hastened the demise of Fiat in India.
Do you have any Fiat or Palio memories? Should Fiat make a comeback in India? Drop your thoughts in the comments section, we will love to hear from you

There are nine Abarths in my city, including mine. Much like how jeep wrangler owners wave at each other in America, we Abarth owners do the same be it with a flick of headlights, a rev of the engine or a nod of the head, we acknowledge each other. 6 years on and I still can't find any worthy replacement for an Abarth.

That was one hell of a car. A single stage remap can bump power to 200 hp. Drove one in kerala. Was absolutely blown away by sheer power and rigidity of the car. I think they left for good becuase indian dont value great cars . They just want cars with high average and fancy gizmo

Back in April 2004, our family was looking to replace the ageing Omni we had. I tried so hard to sell the Palio, but dad wasnt convinced about the Fiat dealerships and service network. Finally we settled for the 75hp Indica petrol. Weird as it may sound, it was a fun car (not dynamically ofcourse), had good grunt for its time. Finally in 2010, we got home the Linea 1.3L top end. Apart from the ground clearance, it was one lovely car. Not sure if you would agree, but the Multijet sounded nicest in the Linea compared to any other car it shared its engine bay with. The engine note when revved hard was lovely for a diesel. We finally sold it to our neighbors, but still parked outside our gate. Almost 3 years and I still regret selling it. What a lovely car it was, in fact it still is.

As a Fiat fan and a proud owner of a Linea T-jet, I can’t thank you enough for this video. I still remember how my friends questioned my decision to buy a Fiat but after spending almost 10 years with my T-jet, I can only continue to smile. Such a solid car with amazing performance. To top it all, how exclusive it feels (especially because of the Bronzo Scuro shade). Thank you for making something cheerful for us fiat folks :)

The first time i tested my friends Abarth punto in Kerala highways, i was simply blown away by its insane power. Whats funnier is that Abarth gives u no clue as to whats lurking inside the hood. Even the exhaust is just like the normal 1.2 Naturally aspirated petrol engines in the segment. But once i hit the accelerator, the massive torque followed by G force that throws us back on the seat was terrifyingly thrilling. Once you get used to the gear setup then its just point and shoot. Out on highways there is simply no beating the Abarth. I often used to exchange my Figo 1.5 tdci with my friends Abarth for occasional trips. The only downside in Abarth was a gearbox which did no justice and a completely messed up ergonomics that ruined an otherwise supreme beast on wheels. 👌👌👌

I drive a Dodge Dart 1.4T with a DCT its the grandson of the Punto engine - makes a lot more power and torque. Insane amounts of FUN - it has an Alfa/Fiat derived chassis. My first daily driver was my parent's 2008 Swift DDiS, and I loved it. I had no idea Fiat was responsible for that engine. Growing up, catching an Abarth in the wild on our Indian roads was always a delight; thank you Fiat.

Thank you for this Sirish. Gave a rush seeing all these beauties together and some others which were not featured here but got notable mentions. Was also happy to see cars of my FIAT friends in the footage. I still remember the period from 2008 to 2010 as I bought my first car with my own money, the Palio Stile 1.6 Petrol and in the following years was present for the launch of the FIAT Linea at Taj Land's End. In 2012, I picked another shooter from the FIAT stable - the legendary TJet+. Both my FIATs gave me nothing else but joy for all the years that I had them. Sadly had to give up my TJet to a friend from the community since I got a truck (Isuzu VCross) in 2019 but I still have my Palio 1.6. That 1.6 motor still acts like therapy for me on the tarmac laden roads of Pune. FIAT India - so much promise and so much sadness at the same time. Will hang on to my Palio 1.6 for as long as I can.

Great story Evo India... I have always been a great fan of Fiat. I have owned a Punto in the past and still haven't driven another car that is as involving to drive as the Punto, this side of 20 lacs. That being said the story should have featured the Fiat 500 and the Avventura. The 500 even had a Abarth version. These 2 models showcase Fiat's uniqueness and their willingness to venture into unchartered territory. Long live Fiat!!

greetings from Brasil! over here the FIat Palio is a very popular car, actually the last variant of this model was sold here until 2021, was the lightweight pick-up truck Strada and even having such an old project, still was the leader in sales in the category and today Fiat sells a new version of the Strada but in a modern platform here most of the Palio cars was sold with a 1,0 litre FIRE flex engine (it accepts petrol or ethanol, or even a mix of both in any proportion) and is a very popular cheap used car, and is a very easy sight on brazilian roads, but we don't have any diesel engines in these cars (actually in brazil any vehicles that aren't trucks, lorries, buses or 4x4 with low gear can't legally have diesel engines) we also have a sports version, the Palio 1.8R, with 115 hp a good trivia aswell: the Palio Adventure was designed in Brazil and most of the Weekend models was sold in this trim level over here, and we have this trim level for the Strada pick-up aswell

Shirish - Gone but Not forgotten is one of the best things EVO has given the Auto Enthusiast to Look and cherish the glorious Automotive past we had back till 2010 It really pains that really good cars cos (catering to Enthusiast) could not cater to like of Indian consumers.. Ford, Mitsubishi, Fiat, VW, Cars like Yeti, X trail, Corsa, Adventure, Peugot 307 were not understood well Also what pains is the todays craze for SUV, mini suv, Soft roaders, which have undermined all other forms of automotive body styles. and with Electric being a neartime reality ... Words like Turbocharged, Supercharged and boost will be things of past.. Keep up the good work buddy.. more power to you...🙂

Picked up a Fiat palio stile 2008 basic , used it for 5 years & man o man what a beauty . Engine response was good & a fantastic milage ( diesel ) of 22- 23. 5 km/ l n that too at 120 - 150 speeds , never had to shift for overtaking once you've reached a speed of 60kmph . been taking curves at high speeds with no roal . Have done 600 kms stretches , beautiful handaling in city n Highway the only drawback was spared n showroom response . Picked up this car after it had done 130000 km , I did bout 70000 km n the connecting conked out , spent rs.60000/ the engine came back to life , did another 40000km but had to sell it cause o non availability / expensive spares . All said n done a lovely car for paved roads ( low clearance ) . Have picked up a Punto Emotion but planning to sell it n buy a ritz .

Fiat made a mistake by signing partnership with Tata . When we gone to buy a Fiat , that Tata guy was more interested in selling Vista but we chosen fiat Punto 1.3 multijet in 2013 , and now in 2021 with 80,000 km My Punto is still an beast and also many people are amused and asks which car is this 😊

My Dad bought the Fiat Uno back in 1999 or 2000. We had it for 18 years. In that particular showroom it was the last Uno with Carburetors and did not have Power Steering. We got a decent discount on it. It was a TN38 registration :) The memories are all coming back now. Just a shame that Fiat is gone.

As the last TJet Linea owner in the country, I would say the car ergonomics are good for my built. I fit in perfectly and recently did a 980 kms single day drive without any pain that could not be solved by a good night's sleep. I love mine and will probably take it to tune of Abarth Punto sometime later. If I noticed this right, the drive location is Hinjewadi Phase 3, right?

Had a silver Palio 1.6GTX. You could forgive its 6kmpl mileage for the performance and build. It might not be upto today’s standards but back in the day when there were Zens and 800s it was truly a tank. Bought a Palio multi jet in 2008. Man….how they cut corners. No where as well put together as the old one. Big mistake. But the old Palio will always be among the greatest hits.
