Maruti SS 80, SB 308 and the 5 speed, we have driven all three generations of the Maruti 800 for part 4 of Gone But Not Forgotten with HPCL. After the Ambassador and Padmini, the Maruti 800 was sold for the longest period in India. It was India’s best selling car for decades. It was the car that put India on wheels. And it made Maruti Suzuki India’s biggest and most popular car manufacturer. Take a trip down memory lane with India’s people car and tell us in the comments what your Maruti 800 memories are.

Our first family “Ac” maruti 800 when I was in my 7th standard in the year 2000. I used to admire the car daily looking at my dad driving it that’s exactly when I became an automobile enthusiast. Without having any driving experience I took out the car for a drive in my 8th standard when dad was out of town and mom sleeping at home I slowly sneaked out. Drove for almost 2kms by the time I came back home to park outside I see my entire colony aunties along with my mom waiting outside my house worried how could I drive a car all alone at that age. I thought my mom would thrash me that I took the car out but it was opposite she was very surprised that how could I drive a car. Well she was worried too for me at the same time. Once my dad came back from his out station film shoot my dad had asked me to sit on his lap and asked me to handle the steering and I told him I can drive the car all by myself and got my 2nd chance to drive it and proved it in front of him. I still remember the heroic feeling inside me driving our very own 800 having my dad next to me. Maruti 800 my first 4 wheel drive experience will never forget in my life.

I live in Hungary, one of the lucky countries that imported Marutis starting from the end of the 80's. I currently own a 94' Maruti 800 and love that thing. I'm trying to keep it in good condition, people still come to me and compliment my little car. No modern or newer car can give that feeling :) Also, is it really gone? I'm not sure. I still can get anything for it even in Hungary!

Like everybody else, our first car was the Maruti 800, specifically the 2001 Maruti 800 STD in Ruby Red. It’s the one where my dad learnt to drive, I learnt to drive, my sister learnt to drive and a dozen other people learnt to drive ! I remember the moment we got the car, we headed straight to JC Road (in Bangalore) to customize it with “fancy” seat covers, sunfilms and a music system with front tweeters !!!!! Nowadays when you buy a car, it’s no big deal. But back in the day, the entire neighborhood welcomed the arrival of the car and even made a few people jealous ! Even though it was extremely fuel efficient, we parked it most of the time and used only when the weather was bad. Otherwise, it was 3 sometimes 4 people on our motorbike. Later the running costs became “too much” that we converted to LPG (CNG was unavailable in Bangalore). And by modern standard this car would be considered as a 2 + 2, but back in the day, it was a 5 seater minimum (children under 18 do not count) The car ran and ran without any issues whatsoever. We did long distance drives without even thinking twice. Even though we’ve all moved on from the 800 to more modern cars, the sense of occasion & excitement when buying the 800 is still unmatched. The memories we have of that car is still number one. And it’ll stay number one forever !

My father had the 800 dx and I learnt driving in it. It was during my early college days and I remember how lovely it was to drive. I felt proud that it had 45 bhp and 5 speed! It was low to the ground it was fun to drive and sometimes when I could get in and out of corners fast enough even the tyres would squeal a bit. Thanks evo India for bringing back the lovely memories.

Damn good and thank you guys for this trip down the memory lane. I was waiting for this episode on Maruti 800. We brought home our first car, the Maruti 800 (silver colour or silk silver as it was called then) in the year 2007. It was an update to the third generation with a new perforated styled grill. What can I say about this little car, this is the car that introduced me to the "Thrill of Driving" that I have now with Cars. It never failed us, 5 people AC on but still never broke down - nothing. Absolute Gem. We had to eventually sell it in 2018 due to parking space issues where we stay and upgraded to Hyundai Grand i10. But even now also, that Maruti 800 holds special place in my heart. No matter what I drive now or upgrade to, will never forget this car.

The 1995 facelift didn't stop with just a new grill. The bonnet lock changed, The hubcaps changed from metal to plastic, The rear split seats were introduced (though a little later in 1996), The front park lamps changed, Front Seatbelts were made standard and it was not the 5 speed which debuted the intermittent wipers. The 1995 model had it even in the base varient.

Hey great video. Again took me back to time. My dad purchased the 2nd generation somewhere around 1987. The whole colony where I lived then had come to see the car turn by turn and I was only too protective as a 10 year of the new purchase. After riding in an Ambi and Fiat, Maruti felt like heaven. We purchased the car from Enpak Motors, one of the few agencies that sprang up in Bombay cashing in on the Maruti name. Maruti has stood the test of time in India.

I had fallen in love the Maruti 800 second generation when I was 3 years old. During our family vacation in Kerala(Yes, I was in Doha-Qatar) it was a dream to have one of these or sit inside. The epic part of the car is the Japanese angry looking face designed wheels and that I would never stop staring on. And in pasts, the A/C in 800 was the best feature in that class. Then my uncle bought one in Bangalore, I was so excited and travelled all over in the city which made me thrilled and happy. Then secondly, fell in love with ‘Gypsy’-I request you to put next episode.

That white maruti 800! Baba bought her home when I was 3 (in 1996) and she left us in 2017. Other cars came and left (Indica and Santro) but baba loved her more than anything else. So many memories, I learnt how to drive a car because of her and I have driven quite a few with my baba next to me but nothing beats his attention to my hands on the steering wheel.

Also, World Car Guide for the win! My grandma gifted 2 year old me the 1989 edition (with the Testarossa on the cover!) and that's where my car obsession started! I still keep my first family car(maruti 800) in my garage neat and clean. Sometimes people come and asks me of selling it rather in a good price as it be expected but to me it's priceless and I put a smile on my face and say them that rather I will offer you some for not asking me to sell it. Wow Sirish, a remarkable and nostalgic review! My mum still has her SB308, bought in 1997. I learnt to drive with it. Used to sneak it out in the building premises just to get a hang. She still spends so much to keep it in shape and its a pity that it has to go by next year due to the scrappage policy. She's gonna shed a few tears for sure! She's just ever so used to that car that she calls our Polo "too big" and never likes driving it. We also had a nice number 4424 that we got for the Polo as well. Once again, great review that really got me on a memory flash. Look forward to see you guys in Goa with the Kigers!

Still using 1998 model as a daily commuter. Though I own Alto 800, Swift dezire, Mahindra Bolero, Mahindra Xylo and Mahindra Scorpio... My first love is Maruti 800. It's perfect for daily use, city driving and even long drive for 2,3 people.

after the Ambassador this the 800 RED at 5.15 was our car....the car I learned to drive in, sat in the dickie from Ooty to Bangalore from Lovedale & then in my Hometown of Jammu with not a single traffic light as a 15-year-old took to school & chased the girls in and drove around town every day till age 18 while my father was in the navy and away :)))

My Grandfather got a 1986 Maruti 800 as a company car from Haryana Breweries in 1989. He eventually bought it from the firm in 1991 and till 2005, it was with the family and and ran 2Lakh KMS on the factory engine and gearbox. I still remember how my father told it had majority japanese parts since it was a pre facelift SB308. Its the reason it never went to a garage for anything serious. Same was the case with my maternal grandparents, they both owned two pre facelift, japanese built SB308s in White at the same time as they both worked for the government (IPS & ONGC) in the early 1990s. Seeing the photos, it certainly looked like a flex. They too ran their 800s for long replacing it eventually with a 2003 Zen LX. They don't make em like that anymore since we now have a 2017 Swift VDi which is built rather cheaply.

I still love my Maruti 800, it has all original parts, serviced at Maruti authorized service centre.People make fun that many owners of Maruti 800 have disposed this car you are still hanging on with Ferrari (Maruti 800 ) because it's red color. I still love when ads pop up in TV that has Maruti 800 as a prop in the ad like KFC etc. The facelifted Maruti 800 exhaust sounds like an Audi it's like Maruti 800 on steroids.

My uncle had a 1986 model Maruti 800 Deluxe in Pune which he used to drive from Pune to Trivandrum atleast once in a year.. It brought me love towards that car and I think that model was the best Maruti 800 series made in India. Once 6 adults and 2 kids had a trip in that car as well !!! The car was sold when my uncle passed away in 2003.

still got maruti 800 mpfi 5 speed and zen mpfi with me . and yeah it feels great when ever i rides it. never going to sell them . i searched 800 5 speed for months and it was a save from a scrap yard. we did some works to get it back to running conditions. slowly we upgraded and now it's my daily runner and running sweet .. it feels happy to own this cutest small cars in the garage.

Learned driving on the 5 speed mpfi 800. I still remember it's engine sound with subdued whistle of some sort. Miss it😢..or rather I miss the memories association with it. But things were simpler yet nicer back then. Nowadays it's about the biggest, swankiest "SUV" with no character.
