This is a video of the facelift we gave a 1980 X1/9 over a few days. We updated the interior colour and fixed so many electrical problems introduced by past owners. Some were outright dangerous with exposed wires just twisted together arcing under the dash on the body. We also restored a lot of parts and replaced others that were not original or modified like the seatbelts and gear stick. The carpet was replaced with an aftermarket one made in Melbourne. It was a pain to install and needed a lot of modifications to fit.

You Aussies are fortunate to live in an area where it doesn't snow. I owned two X 1/9s (1974 and 1979) and loved them, but they rusted away quickly in our northern climate (SE Michigan).

This is the best X1/9 re-build video I have ever seen. Thank you. I love the X1/9. I think it's a concept car built for The People.

Wow!! I'm slowly working on my 1980 here in Canada -- I wish things moved as fast as yours did :) Thanks for sharing -- and being an encouragement to me!!

Wonderful cars, I loved mine, wish England wasn't so damned wet.

Yes, I’m sure the wetness and snow has destroyed many cars there. However we also have our fair share of real rusty ones.

A nice job. I've owned a few X1/9s. Funny little cars. Endearing but slow. However I note that the better/high end the car, i.e. Ferrari, Lambo, Merc, Aston, Maserati etc, the more likely they are to have a pale leather interior. To chose to have a black interior car in Australia leaves me speechless.

Leather interior would’ve been nice but quite costly and you really do need air conditioning if you’re going leather. As for the colour black it really makes little difference. Summer is not the time use these type of cars here. They don’t have air conditioning. Our winters springs and autumn are cooler months when the sun is out which makes it perfect for that environment and colour.

Slow, yeah. Can be improved in this area. How about 270 RWHP / 650 kg? Nothing like slow.

Should have installed some Dynamat while you had the carpet out.

The car already has a insulation, it’s hard to tell but you can see the floor is not a bright colour like the car. To be fair there is probably more benefit removing all insulation to save weight. As they are noisy cars especially with no roof.

@@x19australia yes Dynamat would be lighter and better than factory insulation. I would have removed the old and used Dynamat its way better than the old factory style, thats just me.

Nice interior upgrade! But that song was barf! Singer wasn't even in pitch. Australia was the gestation for so many great bands and musicians here in America: ACDC, Men At Work, even Olivia Newton John had nice pipes. Curse you RU-vid and your stinking copyright enforcement.

The tape was under the seat so figured we should give it a go. It was never a great song :)

Well, I like the song & BTW, „Men at Work“ was a one hit wonder, Olivia Newton John was born in Cambridge & I would consider „The Seekers“ the best Australian band ever & then maybe Nick Cave…

Black..? It could have been made exciting with gadgets galore. Now it looks boring.

Gadgets galore sounds interesting. What would you have done?

@@x19australia I did try on a few over the years. The lack of space behind the seats was a big hindrance, the glove box could so easily be replaced along with a better centre aisle console. Maybe a digital instrument binnacle ? Then there's the cramped engine bay and a silly rear boot. I only ever owned the 1500 version, pre and post VS.
