Hahaha. Laura, you do you. I wouldn't stop watching your videos and learning from your experiences and expertise regardless of what you called it. Call the Hartley what you want. Its not like the tone is pretentious. That's not who you are. When you said glass greenhouse I had to think a moment. If you continued to call the Hartley a glass greenhouse I'd eventually get used to that too. Thanks for your sunny, thoughtful, loving nature. God bless.

Just so you know when I hear the words "The Hartley" it absolutely makes my day. I have been following you since you lived in the last house next to your in- laws. I have seen EVERY video and the videos you did when you toured The Hartley Greenhouse at the flower shows. I have just waited for the day when you announced that you would be getting one. The day you announced that you were actually getting a Hartley was huge day for me and all of your followers I'm sure. Thank you for taking us along so that that we can live your dream along side you.

Laura, get some weeping willow branch. & put it in with the fig cuttings. It acts like a natural root stimulator. Plus take all the leaves off but the top leaf. Fig trees like slow release lime. Tomato fertilizer and fish emulsion as well. I’ve been growing fig trees for 4 years. And if you store it in your insulated garage over winter. (CH- no colder that 25 degrees)It will not succumb to die back. This will let you get two crops. (Brebra & main crop)
@catherineshiddengarden2596
@catherineshiddengarden2596 3 года назад
PS. Next time you don’t want this root suckers. You can just leave them on and add some dirt to the bottom and let them root with the mother tree. Then when they have rooted, you can cut them off and presto you’ll have another fig tree. & when it comes to ripening the fig fruit. What for it to drop from its fruit stem. CH is a really tasty fig. I have over 50 verities. Still a top 10 fig for me.

Wind knocked off the entire top of a young fig tree this Spring here in Florida. I left the naked pole of the fig just as it was, planted in the sandy soil under the palm and stuck the top in a pot filled with soil under dappled sun and it is growing so well, and my fig 'pole' grew a nice new head full of leaves. Hardy folks, those figs! The peel of a kumquat is the BEST part. Most of my citrus have wicked thorns! Once they are a tree it doesn't matter since I pick mine with a fruit picker (metal pole with curved pitch fork 'fingers' to pull them and basket underneath to catch them). So a small tree may be like picking wild blackberries - painful but worth the work once you're eating the jelly or cobbler. I love figs no matter how they are eaten but favorite is fig preserves with cheese and crackers! Good luck. I planted a kumquat 15 years ago and it died during an unusually cold freeze (FL) then it produced a new tree from the root stock which turned out to be native North Florida Sour Orange. Wonderful for mock key lime pies but very sour!

Good tip. 👍 I can’t always find that, so I also use a lot of river sand/ building sand to mix into my potting mix when I plant things like aloes or succulents or such. Hey Laura I was raised in Belize 🇧🇿 Central America and we had Guava trees growing in our backyards. They're delicious fruits but they have millions of tiny hard seeds in one fruit. To combat that we made guava jam with the entire fruit skin and all. We ran the pulp through a sive strainer combined it sugar and lime juice until it had a jam consistency. The fruit has such a distinct smell and flavor its heavenly. I think you'll love it.

I have a huge fiddle leaf fig that was given to me when my Father died 13 years ago. I have gotten two nice clippings from it and plan to give one to my sister. And it’s time for another haircut so more clippings!!!!

I planted three hardy Chicago fig trees about 11 yrs ago and now they’re over 12 ft tall and produce large amounts of fruit. The first years they would die back and rebounded in the spring from the ground. Now they keep their old branches and start fruit right away. They’re easy trees to grow:))

Thank you Laura definitely need to cut down and propagate my Fiddle Leaf Fig! I have been putting it off, but have new motivation!Great project for a rainy day here in the Finger Lakes. Also just had to share that years ago I lived in (1980) Tulsa, Oklahoma and the summer I moved there they had over 58 days in a row of over 100 degrees! So I feel for you! Now I melt at 85 degrees because we often get high humidity too! Oh well you take the good with the uncomfortable! Always have your videos to enjoy when I’m inside no matter what the season! 🤗

I do believe I see rootstock shooting thru the kumquat. I would double check as kumquat generally do not have the large thorns I see.

I first found you on RU-vid by searching for "propagating fig leaf". You gave me the courage to shape, trim, and cut off healthy leaves from my cuttings. Needed to know what the actual rooting would look like…and how to proceed from there. I am having unexpected success with this plant in our new home along the Southern California coast. THANK YOU for this follow up!!!

Your kumquat tree foliage and thorns looks just like trifoliate orange, which is commonly used as rootstock for other citrus varieties.

Hi Laura, no questions able this vlog. I just wanted to tell u years ago, here in West Texas, I remember the summer was unbearable. 3 months straight it was 100° & over with no rain. I seriously considered moving to another part of Texas. I wasn't a gardener then so I can't remember how plants fared, but we survived by doing a lot of every day chores & errands after 7 or 8 pm. If I can survive that weather, u can too. Stay strong & thanks for all the knowledge u bring us.

Did anyone else like the time warp feature!?! I really thought it was cool. Laura if you had not told us, I would have just thought y'all were trying a new thing out. Loved it and Love you! Great video like usual. Always learning something. My husband hears about the "Garden lady I watch" all the time and is beginning to think I have an obsession.....lol. YASS! an obsession to learn.
