I want that bautiful shine on my new Fiddle Leaf like you have on yours. Is it okay to clean the leaves on my new Fiddle Leaf? Water does not lead to shiny leaves. I have five Fiddleleaf figs and they are absolutely beautiful and amazing and they are growing crazy. I am now going to be putting them in clusters like you suggested. I have two that are fairly close to the same size and they’re going to go in one nice size pot and then I have three that are smaller. They’re all going to go into a pot together and I tell people that they’re very sociable. I talk to my plants but I specially talk to my fiddle leaf figs. I get funny looks; however, they all look really beautiful!

This was exactly what I needed to get my plant back on track! I am new to the houseplant seen and I really love it. In the beginning I wanted to touch, handle, and make changes to my plants daily which you probably know almost killed them…well killed a few😢. My Fiddle leaf has been an amazing trooper. He survived being spilled over, spider mites, and root rot. I am lucky my plant has weathered the storm as I learn what’s best. With all that being said and feeling that I’ve tackled all the things that cause problems now I’m having difficulty getting him to grow again. I’ve downsized his pot, switched the soils to what you mentioned in the video, and really given a whole lot of tlc. The thing that is missing is a good fertilizer and providing nutrients on a schedule…I’ve heard so many places that I shouldn’t fertilize in the winter but I think that might be incorrect or inaccurate information so thanks for the info I’m excited to see these results!! Please respond to my email because I have a few questions for you as well!! Thank you!

These plants are hard to kill but silly me put mine in a glazed ceramic pot and watered it. The leaves raised up and were happy and a few days later the tree is almost bald. I pulled the plant out and put LECA between the root ball and the wet soil then mixed LECA and soil around the plant. Unfortunately, I broke off a part of the stem and thankfully there was no rot. They are also so easy to propagate, just plop the leaves in water and put in a warm spot and watch them get crazy roots.

Mine loves the south west facing window. Indirect sunlight of course. The only issue is its growing on one stem. There is a 2nd stem that never grew since day one with 6 leaves. I snapped off the top 2 of the dwarf stem and am propagating that which now has roots I also tried to cut between notches to no avail. It has a leggy area from the past so its leaning now ive strung it upright. Going to report soon many roots showing. its been more difficult to raise then my kids hahaha Fertilizer I use is miracle grow it grows well with this too well

@FiddleLeafFigPlant

That is fantastic to hear! Branching usually occurs when there has been some sort of injury to the main branch. Pruning, notching, and pinching are all methods to create branches on your plant. I would allow your plant to grow another foot or so taller before pruning to create branches. Once pruned, the main stalk will not grow any taller, but the branches that form will. Hi! This is a great resource. Thank you! I recently trimmed off a few leaves that had brown around the edges, especially the top of the leaf where it attaches to the branch. I realize it was under watered at one point. My question is this. I trimmed so that a little of the leaf stem is still attached (and the poor thing bled). Should I leave those well enough alone now? I trimmed 3 leaves this way.

Thank you for that helpful presentation. I have a gorgeous fiddle leaf, it's about 4 feet high and it seems happy in the spot where I put it, because it is growing 2 new leaves which got so big so fast, and I see a third little one coming out, my question/predicament is that my place is very small, and right now been Summer it's ok, but I live in Canada which is freezing in the winter, my balcony door is about 6 feet from where the plant is and I step out on my balcony about 15 times a day, even in the winter, so so far so good but when the winter comes I hope it doesn't affect my plant. Thanks. Also, should I mist it?
@FiddleLeafFigPlant
@FiddleLeafFigPlant 2 года назад
It sounds like your plant is very happy and healthy! It loves your care routine since it is pushing out new growth! I don't recommend misting as it does not raise the relative humidity to make a difference and it can cause the leaves to pucker at the edges if the excess water evaporates.

Sounds like a very happy plant! If it is growing and happy no need to repot. But if there are more roots than soil, it needs the soil medium to continue to thrive. Move up a pot size and use a fresh fast-draining soil. Water thoroughly after repotting and leave it in the bright sunny spot it loves!

Thank you!! This was so helpful. I just repotted my plant using Miracle Grow Tropical Potting Mix. I added some perlite and gravel. Is this potting mix ok even though it claims "backed with nutrients that feed tropical plants for up to 6 months". would I need to wait 6 months before using your FLF fertilizer or food?
@FiddleLeafFigPlant
@FiddleLeafFigPlant 2 года назад
Hi Maria, you are correct. If you look at the label, you may find the NPK ingredients that are included in the soil. Keep an eye on how fast it drains and dries in between watering. Miracle Grow can be known to hold onto moisture for too long. Hold off on adding any additional fertilizer as ours is meant to be used for virgin soil that doesn't include any additional fertilizer. Happy Growing!

Hi! I purchased my flf from Lowe's so I'm not sure exactly what type of soil was used other than the mix does appear to have orchid bark, but I can't tell if fertilizer is in the premix. So how do I determine how to fertilize my tree? Do you fertilize in the winter?
@FiddleLeafFigPlant
@FiddleLeafFigPlant 3 года назад
You could try contacting Lowes to see if the fertilizer they use in their trees includes a slow release fertilizer! Or if you see tiny green balls, then most likely the soil includes some type of fertilizer. If the soil is free of slow-release fertilizer granules, then you are able to fertilize once the plant has acclimated to its new environment in your home (about 4 weeks). The FLF Plant Food is safe and gentle enough to be used all year long. If the conditions in your home are kept consistent throughout the year, there won't be a need to avoid fertilizing in the winter, because the plant won't really know it is the winter season. This video can help explain that: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3EGjpGWL76k.html Here is a link to the FLF plant food as well: www.amazon.com/Fiddle-Leaf-Plant-Ficus-Lyrata/dp/B07BG98GQD?ref_=ast_sto_dp

Hi Lauren, thank you for being such a loyal follower! Is it the soil that is not draining fast enough or the pot? After repotting the plants can be a bit temperamental but within a few weeks should perk back up. Mine has a couple leaves at the top that seem to be cupping upward. The bottom few leaves aren't shiny and one seems to have an edge cupping downward. I have it in a plastic "pot" with quite a few small drainage holes. I repotted it from the grower's pot because it appeared to be outgrowing that pot. I added perlite to the indoor potting soil. It is about 2' tall and about 1' from an exterior glass door that never gets opened, but does get some good light. The soil always feels cool rather than moist. My other plants need water 2x/week. When should I first start "feeding" it (just got it a week ago) and does the rest seem okay to you?
@FiddleLeafFigPlant
@FiddleLeafFigPlant Год назад
Great questions! I would give your plant a few weeks to acclimate to its new home. Place the plant directly in front of and up against the window. Even 1' away from the window will not be enough light for it to thrive. Water when the top inches of soil are dry and ensure the water drains properly out the bottom drainage holes. It should do well with those tips!

My two fiddle leaf plants have lived on my screened patio for two years. They get sun from sunrise to about noon. I am in zone 8B southeast Georgia. I was out of town for work during the recent cold snap, and came back to major frost damage to all the foliage. I defoliated the plants, but am not sure if they are still alive. Our temps go as low as 28 degrees- I have never brought them inside- they have lived in the same spot since I brought them home and thrived there. Does the scratch test apply to these plants?

Hi Eleanor, I'm really sorry to hear about the cold temperatures and your plants! They are resilient if there is life in the plant itself. A scratch test or cutting into the trunk to see if white sap is present will let you know if the plant can fully regrow over time. Good luck!

hi there just a wee question regarding #6 regarding proximity to air drafts. In particular against a fan or air conditioner... aren't these plants exposed to the forces of nature which often has sporadic winds and drafts (especially during monsoon) or even getting pulled/nudged occasionally by animals? Some other commentators reckon to occasionally hold the trunk of the tree and shake/wobble it (gently of course) to promote strong rooting. Its probably non too crucial, but just wondering as a concerned parent :) Kind regards.
@FiddleLeafFigPlant
@FiddleLeafFigPlant 3 года назад
Hi Yong, the reason we advise against exposing your FLF to vent drafts is not due to the movement of the plant. You are correct that in the wild, the FLF gets tossed around. Wiggling its trunk is a good practice that can actually help strengthen the tree: fiddleleaffigplant.com/how-to-strengthen-and-thicken-a-fiddle-leaf-fig-tree-trunk-video/ The issue with vents is the temperature that comes out of them, either too hot or too cold - extreme temperatures can shock your fiddle leaf fig. Vents also make the air much drier, which does not agree with a FLF, since it likes some humidity.

Hi! I have a very healthy fiddle leaf and I have been making only the mistake of moving the plant (to avoid drafts.) the plant has a lot of healthy leaves at the bottom and has grown straight up because I did not know until now how to notch, which I will do right away. It is about 2.5 ft tall. I don't know if I should prune the leaves at the bottom to give it a more tree-like look or not. The leaves are so healthy, it seems a shame. What do you think?
@FiddleLeafFigPlant
@FiddleLeafFigPlant Год назад
Hi Fran, it depends on the look that you are going for! It is fine to prune bottom leaves so that your plant looks more tree like. Just remember not to remove more than 10% of the total amount of leaves at one time so the plant does not go into shock. Happy Growing!

Hello Claire, Thanks so much for your very informative videos. I have a tall leggy FLF. It's over 7 ft tall, but only has clusters of beautiful leaves on the very tops of two slender tall stems. I pinched off the very center buds to discourage taller growth, I notched several areas on both trucks to encourage branching. But then disaster! One of the entire top clusters broke off along with about18 inches of trunk.🥺Can the broken off cluster be propagated even though I pinched off the center tip? Also will it still branch out on the bare stem that I notched before the big break? Thanks so much for your help.
@FiddleLeafFigPlant
@FiddleLeafFigPlant 2 года назад
Hi there! You'll find branching and growth will occur just below the point where the cluster broke off the main branch. Place the cuttings in water and within 6-8 weeks you should have roots long enough to plant in soil for new plants!

Hello!!! I just got my first FLFP and it is in perfect condition so I don't want that to change. I have perfect big NE sun with large windows where I will keep it. It needs to be watered and transplanted because the roots are coming out. Should I water it before transplanting? With just plain water? I got it from a lady that knows her plants & they were very well kept for, so I'm assuming its been fertilized.. Do you ever use semi-hydroponics for your plants? I am switching all mine to that. I'm a bit nervous to transplant to SHP's for my FPFP and my new monstera. Do you have any recommendations for semi-hydroponics? Thank you!!
@FiddleLeafFigPlant
@FiddleLeafFigPlant 2 года назад
Hi there! What great questions and congrats on your new fiddle leaf fig! Since it is a new plant, I don't recommend repotting. That may put added stress on your plant as it acclimates to its new home. I recommend repotting when your roots are coming out the bottom drainage holes and beginning to wrap around the inner edge of your pot. When watering, you can use plain water, distilled may be best depending on your location. This video will be helpful! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-b9RLkEY29ME.html Also, I do not do semi-hydroponics for fiddle leaf figs as their root systems can develop fungal or bacterial root infections if they are not in a medium that is fast draining and the root system stays too wet for too long. That said, there are others out there who grow in LECA which may be an avenue for you to explore. I just got a fiddle leaf fig and was told they don't like direct sunlight (even through the window). According to your rule number 1 it sounds like maybe I was misguided? @FiddleLeafFigPlant 2 года назад
Hi Pamela, that is a great question! It is true that fiddle leaf figs need a lot of light however, if they are not properly acclimated to direct sunlight, the leaves can burn quickly. Best advice is to place it right up against your brightest window. If it has direct sunlight coming through, a sheer curtain can change that direct light to indirect light. Happy Growing!

I've had my fiddle for a few years now. It's about 4-5 feet tall now and has been my pride and joy as it's always been beautifully green, healthy and happy. I became sick recently and I had moved the fiddle and a couple of other plants to the middle of the patio to water them and give them sun. I wasn't aware of the sunburn issue and sure enough, my beautiful plant is now sunburned all over. It's very upsetting bc almost half it it is brown and burned. Hearing you say the leaves will never recover is quite depressing. It's almost to the point where I don't like looking at it anymore bc it's brown all over :/ I'm angry at myself for leaving them out like I did but I was sick for 2 days and it never crossed my mind. That is a tough one! New growth will not appear lower down where leaves used to be. You can try notching the bare section to encourage new growth and branches. Yes, neem oil based products can help get rid of and protect against any insect or pest issues. Remember to read the instructions as any neem oil left on leaves that then have light on the leaves can burn.

Hi good morning, my plant the leaves are getting brown and falling of. I water twice a week and spritz every other day.what am I doing wrong? Was given this 🪴 in a dream. Help...please!

Hi Ingrid, watering twice a week sounds like a lot. If your plant is in a pot indoors that would be too much water for the root system. I recommend watering when the top inches of soil are dry and ensuring the water drains out the bottom drainage holes. Make sure your plant is sitting right in front of and up against your brightest window. It needs a lot of light to thrive.

My mom got a fig as a from my grandmothers funeral. The plant has been doing great until she moved into a new home. And now it’s dropping leaves she’s so sad . Please help

It might be the move that has made the plant drop leaves. That is normal and not to worry. Make sure the plant is directly in front of and up against the brightest window and water when the top inches of soil are dry ensuring the water drains well out the bottom drainage holes. It will bounce back!

Is your plant getting enough light? Does the pot look too snug for the roots to grow more to support new growth?

How can you tell if it has rott? I notice the main stem on my fiddle tree is dark brown, is that normal?
@FiddleLeafFigPlant
@FiddleLeafFigPlant 2 года назад
A bark covered trunk is a sign the plan tis maturing. But if you find the bottom most leaves are beginning to develop dark brown / black spots that may be a sign of root rot. Check your soil and pot to ensure it is draining well and the bottommost soil is not sitting in any water.

It's time for me to report our FLF. I have not been able to find nursing pits larger that 12 in. Any suggestions where I could get one?

Amazon may be a good place to search for ones that are larger. Key is to find one that has multiple holes on the bottom (not the sides).

I just bought my plant and moved it into a nice pot and watered it.. 2 days later it looks like one of the branches is dying off.. I need help! Is it burnt? Too much water? Too big a pot?
@FiddleLeafFigPlant
@FiddleLeafFigPlant 2 года назад
Hi Melissa, are the leaves dry and crispy? Or just a little droopy looking? If they are looking droopy, it most likely is caused by the repotting process. These plants can go into a bit of shock after being disturbed during repotting. Not to worry. As long as your plant is sitting right in front of and up against your brightest window, your plant will recover and bounce back!

My fiddle leaf fig stays in the direct Sun all day on my deck and thrives

That is great! If plants are not acclimated to direct sunlight they will burn. Sounds like yours has been acclimated over time and is very happy! Great job!

@FiddleLeafFigPlant
@FiddleLeafFigPlant 2 года назад
It can happen quickly and has happened to me as well. The leaves will not heal but make sure your plant is not in direct sunlight anymore and in time when your plant is healthy and actively regrowing, you can remove any leaves that are more than 50% damaged.
