Today I’m out in the field with Jimmy D’Amato (Jimzilla online) and he is using his Manticore. I have known Jimmy for years and he is one of the best hunters I know. We picked an old park that people have left for dead. We picked an area of the park that is loaded with trash to see how these machines would perform. Spoiler alert, while comparing signals, we could clearly hear all of each other’s good deep targets. When it came to deep iron, there were a few challenges… also, first time for Jimmy using the UniProbe.

Great video showing actual digs and targets to make all of us drool. good performance from the two best detectors out there even though the Manticore has a problem with some deep iron . Would have been helpful if the speakers were on so we could hear the target sounds. D2 owner here and it's hard to beat!

Thanks guys, great video, It really looks like a pretty close battle between the 2 powerhouse machines, I'm a beach hunter primarily, And had to learn fast with the xp 2 Here on FLs, treasure coast, The past 3 months, With the big storms, One of the problems I'm Working on, With the xp 2, Is digging good numbers like 86, 88, Then digging to China, Only to find the numbers change to single digits 3, 7, as I get close to the target, But I know it's because I run my machines hot, hi sens, low disc, and reactivity, But learning to bounce around from programs, To learn more about the target, Before I dig it, Either way still Learning, but Pretty happy with the xp 2, Thanks again guys, And merry Christmas.☃️🌲🇺🇲🙏 ,

Really excellent video comparing two great detectors in real world conditions. I love that you compared the signals and then dug the targets to confirm your findings. The D2 did edge out the Manicore on iron. I saw another video that said if there is a slight delay on the Manicore before you get the "good" reading it probably is iron. If there is no delay then it probably is good. Congrats on all the silver!
@DetectorComparisons

Interesting observation about the delay being iron with the Manticore. We are going out again next week to a different spot that actually has a little more iron and we will be also comparing the signals side by side. This time we're going to flip one of the ear cups on our headset so hopefully the camera picks up the sound of the signals as well. Thanks again for your input

Interesting video buddy. I see Jimmy on the Manticore groups. I don’t own one of those yet. Looking at this video it doesn’t make me feel I’m doing the wrong thing by using my Deus 1 with HF coil instead of either of these. My Deus 2 isn’t as good in highly mineralised ground looking for tiny ancient coins. Hopefully XP will bring out the update and fix that. Also regarding the manticore picking up iron I think a lot of that is people just haven’t had that many hours on it yet. Although one thing I don’t like that I’m hearing is most users up to now are not running it anywhere near the top end with sensitivity due to too much chatter and it’s preference for iron. If I pay top dollar for a machine I want to have the option to run the sensitivity to the max with very little discrimination. Thanks for the video and good luck.

I believe just like any detector it takes time and hours to be more confident and have expertise to be good with your detector. I believe the Manticore is still new in the hands of detectorist and there is a learning curve that needs to be overcome. It's either that or minelab released an inferior machine which I highly doubt. It's the users for now... And maybe an iron update. Great video!
@DetectorComparisons
@DetectorComparisons Год назад
Definitely takes time to learn a new machine but between Jimmy and myself we have thousands of hours on our Equinoxes and for sure the Manticore is a step up. Deep iron has always been an issue with the Equinox and many good Hunters out there that have upgraded to the Manticore hoping there will be a noticeable Improvement regarding being fooled by Deep iron. Jimmy has talked to many people and has tried many different settings on his machine, keeping the sensitivity down around 20 seems to help but hopefully we can figure out what else we can do to stop the falsing. In the near future we're going to go to areas that have more iron in the park we were just in and we'll keep trying different settings to get better results.

@@BrotherMJ808 remember when targets are very close to other targets, a lot of times it will be hard to get the ID number to lock on especially when the good Target is deep. On the 4 occasions that the Manticore falsed on iron, did he check it with all metal mode turned off, and it still didn't read as iron(red line under the number)?
@jimzilladetecting
@jimzilladetecting Год назад
Those were clear signals without the red line. When you turn all metal off the target is just as clear but you don’t hear the iron grunt BUT sometimes on deep coins you also hear the iron grunt. I don’t think all iron can be avoided with the Manticore. Some of those targets that I dug came up as 95 on the VDI. That could be considered an iron target right from the beginning since that’s a high VDI reading but silver sometimes reads that high as well especially if it’s deep. I noticed with the manticore really deep targets can read much higher than their normal numbers or much lower. Only on really deep targets not targets less than 8”
@DetectorComparisons
@DetectorComparisons Год назад
Jimmy was going back and forth between searching in disc and all metal. The Deep iron targets that fooled the Manticore were checked by him in both all metal and disc. Jimmy had quite a few hours on the Manticore before we hunted together and he said turning down the discriminate to 20 definitely helped in terms of digging less deep iron.
@jeanponce2017
@jeanponce2017 Год назад
@@jimzilladetecting Back in the day when the Whites DFX was one of the best out there for who ever had the patience to learn it. I remember that iron would wrap around and false but at least it gave a +95 VDI which pretty much would normally be like a silver dollar or a jar cache of silver if it wasn't iron wrap around and maybe the aluminum can of course. So I often disc'd the +95 out and also down around -25 and lower so I would accept light iron because I got much better depth doing so. And then either way I almost always ran in Mixed Mode to hear the iron which told me there's iron regardless of what I wanted to accept or reject and relied on its VDI With the Manticore did that iron falsing also give you high VDI number?. If I'm not mistaken I thought on one of the digs you thought it might be a silver quarter so i'm assuming that was a pretty high VDI. If so even if you have to deal with some falsing can't you start keeping an eye out for those very high VDI numbers especially if you pinpoint a little off to the side? I know most likely it's wise to still just dig those damn/darn "iffy" signals because you never know what's really down there. One other thing and I'll use the DFX as comparison again was that it had a signagraph scale that would show ferrous and non ferrous targets light up regardless to the targets ID so if I got a VDI of +95 there might be 1 bar up at that +95 range on the signagraph but it would also show heavy blocking down low at the -95 area on the signagraph which pretty much told me it's most likely iron wrapping around. That detector was amazing for it's time with it's abilities to have control over so many functions that it made a lot of great finds for me and I could call the target or it's alloy so accurately that friends watching were thinking I was cheating somehow lol??? But it just too outdated and it doesn't have the digital computing power and processing speed of these detectors of today to keep up although I did dig some deep coins. They were also clean New Jersey farm dirt. Mineralized ground wasnt quite so easy. But this was a great comparison because these two detectors and the Legend are the 3 I'm down to and I was leaning towards the Deus before I saw this and I haven't seen any great video like this with the Legend to sway me. I bought the AT Maxx 2 months ago and I think I should've waited a little longer.
@jimzilladetecting
@jimzilladetecting Год назад
@@jeanponce2017 I used to have the V3i and that reacted the same way to iron as the DFX. The problem with the Manticore is that iron can come in at any number 60-99. Sometimes deep silver comes in at 97-98. On deep targets the VDI numbers can really jump up in mineralized ground. I’ve dug wheats that read in the 85-92 range with the manticore

Deus 1 here in the UK is terrible for falsing on large iron. Drawing the coil back whilst swinging can sometimes change it to an iron tone. Now a mate has just bought a Deus 2 from using a Garrett, and now digging loads of iron! So it seems to be the opposite way round here.
@agetyrrell
@agetyrrell Год назад

@@agetyrrell Nope, lol it's poor on iron falsing. I've had it about 8 years. And have got used to it to eliminate most of it. But when I go over the same signal with my f75, and a mate checks with an at pro, and says it's iron. And the Deus tells me it's a good signal, and it's iron. That confirms to me that it's poor on iron id. Still love the machine though. And will get the d2 at some point.

Well we don't show in the video is the fact that many many different settings were tweaked before we did this hunt. @@jeanponce2017 you are correct with your observation that adding more power by cranking up the sensitivity can actually cause more problems in certain situations. Jimmy tested out his Manticore extensively and realized you only need to go to about 20 on the sensitivity to get excellent depth and less falsing. The D2 and the Manticore did very well at IDing deep targets but depending on the ground conditions and what may be nearby the target, at about 7 to 8 inches the ID number would jump around a little but usually stay within a few points. We're going to try to get out next week after this deep freeze and do some more side by side hunting

The problem with not digging the iron piece is that it could be masking good signals near it. I pull iron out all the time (pipes, iron bars, etc) and sure I'm going to dig a few more holes but I can tell you I'm pulling a lot more relics than anyone else that are hiding because of the big iron masking it. I think it's a trade off. I am using the relic mode on a Deus 2. I can tell you if there is a coin or piece of metal there that machine will find it. Went to a local school the other day and the coins were standing out of the trash by miles. I also notch out 1-50 so I'm digging that tiny pieces of crap.
