Because of how quickly the show is coming out, I wasn't able to review the newest episode. But I'm actually pleasantly surprised of how good the fight choreography has been so far so I'm definitely going to come back and review some of the lights it for combat!
The newest episode has the first full-blown lightsaber fight and it's still really good quality and good mix of lightsaber, unarmed, and Force shenanigans. And there's the first appearance of an Expanded Universe technology in there, that is a key conceit to the fight! Can't wait for you to spot it as an old books Expanded Universe fan.
please watch "to the death " by corridor crew its fantastic and you will be pleasantly surprised. You can also watch "we asked a sword expert to make realistic lightsaber fight " if you check out how they made the duel its very good
I find it ironic but relieving that I see you guys liking the choreo of this (martial artist myself and done fight scenes within group). But I see another channel Shad, completely ripping apart the acolyte fight. While I’m sure he has some skills, I can respect that you guys actually choreograph and make fight scenes. So if I disagree, I can still respect and understand why so
A LOT of people got pissed about Cate Moss. She was played up throughout the marketing to draw folks in, everyone got super excited... then they killed her inside of ten minutes to a tiny knife that she totally could have stopped ("But flashbacks!" is not a valid defense of this). They promised the first Wookie Jedi on screen... dead off-screen. I mean, we've seen even younger Jedi Force Push multiples of the same item, and react to attacks they couldn't see, let alone this fight. The Ep 5 fight was a lot better (Aside from the lighting.), but come on, Acolyte outside of those moments is jaw-droppingly lackluster. And let's be clear: The producers *want* the hate. That's why they start up with the "toxic fans" stuff long before anything happens. The trillion-dollar studios have worked out that they can piss people off into watching stuff. It would be different if Mae was shown to be a better martial artist during the fight, but like, Jedi have no issue with drawing a lightsaber on someone who is willing to kill children (That girl she pulled a knife on and threw over the ledge, for instance). As well, we see throughout the fight that Master Indara is VASTLY superior as a martial artist, Mae having to go full-tilt while Indara looks like she could be reading a book.
The unarmed hand-to-hand at 9 minutes looks a lot like Aikido, or something else derived from Japanese Jujutsu. It's almost like a kokyu nage that switches into a sweep when the aggressor reacts.
I do not hate the Show. I started ignoring the Social Media background noise of TV Shows and since then I enjoy TV way more again. There is plenty of People out there making money with Angertainment and this Angertainement primed me negatively on everything.
First off I'll give Sellsword credit, he admits he doesn't really know anything about the show and won't pass judgement on it because he hasn't seen it which I can respect. That being said there is a lot of hate for this show going on, including a notible chunk in this very comment section, and here's the thing Acolyte isn't a bad show. It may not be the best show Star Wars has ever made, Andor will probably be clinging onto that title for generations, but it's not a bad show. Acolyte seems to me to have fallen victim to an increasingly common cycle where a couple of internet "media critics" who often are more conservative leaning find a show or movie and decide they hate it and will produce hours of content about how bad it is before the show even comes out which sets the conversation around the show or movie in a negative light before it even comes out, and then once the show or movie comes out people will find small insignificant details, for instance the whole "fire in space" fiasco, and use that as further proof to make more hours of content hating on the show or movie that cover online discourse on it making people who very often are just passively existing on the internet see all this hate for the show or movie making them think it's bad without even seeing the show and repeating this view to other people who haven't seen the show spreading these views like a virus. The only shows or movies that even have a chance of beating this cycle are the ones that are inequivalently that best shows or movies of the year they came out, such as the previously mentioned Andor, while anything less of the most absolute perfection is deemed the newest worst thing ever made and this crap annoys me to no end.
It probably a fine show, but I already down watch much tv, and the original star wars was so special to my that I hate seeing it slip further and further in the the mediocrity that is modern tv. Same reason I stopped watching the marvel films. I'm bit interested in tv and movies that are "ok" I don't have enough time to spend in them. If other people like them, thats great. I'm glad you can enjoy them, and I hope you keep enjoying them. But it's not for me
I was really hoping to see you react to the fights in Ep 5 that just came out because those have been the best so far. Also, Andor and Mandalorian are the only Disney SW id say are really worth watching
Have you seen Andor? Andor isn't just good Star Wars, its fantastic cinema period! Andor has five of the most stirring, gut-wrenching, monologues in cinema history. Roy Batty "Tears in the rain" good.
People are definitely hating on the Acolyte too much. It may not be a great show but, so far, it's been a lot better than the Book of Boba Fett and Obi-Wan. After episode 5 I'm actually starting to really like it. Oh and you should absolutely watch Andor!
@@shepard21 If that's how you want to think about it, fine. I'm saying one crap (Boba and Obi) is larger and stinks more than the other (Acolyte), yet people are acting like The Acolyte is the worst Star Wars has ever been. The comparison still holds.
Agreed. It leaves a lot to be desired, but it's nowhere near as bad as people think. I'd give it a 3.5, but that could change by the end of the season. People are wayyyyy overblowing this.
I can't tell what's coming out next. This is filmed last week, and it takes time to edit produce stuff. I will do another one once this couple more lightsaber
Didn't know until now that Carrie-Anne Moss was in this. What do you think of the casting choice and choreography style having any relation to her role in The Matrix tetralogy?
The older I’ve gotten the more I’ve accepted that Star Wars has always been levels of dumb. Sometimes it’s fun dumb, sometimes it’s just dumb dumb, but the dumb can never be separated. ANH and ESB - the least amount of dumb. ROTJ - the dumb increases. Prequels - DUMB DUMB DUMMMMMMB Clone wars cartoon - starts in real Dumb, gradually improved to minimal dumb. Rebels- similar to CW Sequels - varying between decent and real DUMB DUMB DUMMMMB Andor - yeah this shit is just good. The only dumb is trying to square this high level drama also had Jar Jar binks as a senator in the same world somethow. Mando S1-2, back to the OT balance of fun dumb. Mando S3/Boba/Obiwan/Ashoka- varying levels of decent and dumb. The point is, embrace the dumb my friends. Accept it into your heart. You know it to be true.
2:18 That’s Mae. She’s An Acolyte Of The Sith. Her Master Is A Sith Master (A Sith Master Is The Equivalent Of A Jedi Knight, A Sith Lord Is The Equivalent To A Jedi Master) Mae’s Been Trained In The Way of The Sith For 16 Years Where As Her Twin Sister Osha Was Trained In The Ways Of The Jedi For A Decade. They Trained At The Age Of 8 Years Old. Osha And Mae Actually Aren’t Twins, They’re Not Even Sisters. They’re The Same Person, They’re Duplicates. Their Mother Conjured Them Out Of Midi-Chlorians So Osha And Mae Are Just As Powerful As Anakin. Also Palpatine’s Master, Darth Plagueis Is In It. 13:34 That’s Mae’s Master
when the second guy had her suspended in the air I was waiting for her to use the force to stab him in the back with the knives he discarded on the ground
I have been wanting to buy a sword for a long time now but I'm not sure on what type of sword to buy. I was hoping that I could get some reccomendations for a beginner.
Force Ninja. Interesting. I would be interested to see a case by case comparison of the original vs later trilogies lightsaber fights in an attempt to see what changed.
I loved your blind-reaction for 2 reasons: 1) It's super authentic! 2) You didn't have to suffer through the bad writing of The Acolyte 🤣 Honestly though, please review Episode 5 of The Acolyte. Some people love that lightsaber fight, some people hate it. I'd love to hear your opinions!
I know it's outside the subject of this video but I have a question that's been bugging me for a while. Do all Hema duels have a duration of about 2-3 swings like in your videos or sometimes it's longer than that? I'm just curious to know the actual length of a fight normally.
man, not a lot of fight choreography reviewer for acolyte this soon other than you. In the first fight, the only other points I noticed on 1st viewing was that kickass PERFECT Side-thrust kick that you skipped at the beginning before the assassin fights the Jedi. The other is that wasted opportunity of the first move of the battle (when Jedi holds Assassin's wrist) to do them arm-locks that we see later on, was sooo looking forward for a slick 'Ch'in na' given the obvious Chinese martial arts influence throughout the show.
There is this vr game you need to try called broken edge it has many different warriors with main and side weapons and you can play pvp to see how other people fight and it has you take different stances and different movements to even attack your enemy it is definitely fun and a fencers choice
The show has a couple of cool scenes, but... yeah... it's a "mystery" that isn't actually a mystery. Like, the Sith gets called by the fans pretty much immediately, and every time there's an element OF a mystery, it just gets revealed pretty much immediately. They DEEPLY needed longer/more episodes to this. To put it in a bit of perspective, the budget for The Acolyte, 8 half-hour long episodes, was $180 million dollars. House of the Dragon, 8 Hour long episodes was $200 million dollars.
The first fight starts with both kicks way out of range, then she throws a couple a punches, second one is aimed so high that even if Carrie had not moved there is no way it would have connected. The finale of that fight contradicts what we have been told about the jedi, she should have seen that one coming, but yea sure not the worst look a distraction move to finish it. Think a thing to remember is a lot of stuntmen/women seems to be martial artist of some sort, that likely help a lot with the unarmed combat scenes. And yes, you should give Andor a chance :) Also would really love to watch a review of the OG triology fights, personally always been a really big fan of the A new hope fight.
Its definitely not perfect but its also not a bad show and I think people are overly critical of it. I like it, and the fight scenes are done by a team who worked on Daredevil and Shang Chi, I cant wait for the rest of the fight scenes.
Please please please watch the newest one. A good like third of the runtime is just fighting. They use guards that look familiar to a HEMAist and a technique that I think you’d like.
genuinely, if ur not watching this simply due to the community reaction. please do urself a favor and watch it. it’s a REALLY good show, and the community is just being a bunch of assholes about it.
@@malikpierre-louis3343 idk what show ur watching then lol, its only gotten better and better. i never said he didnt have a right to not watch it 😂 i simply said, if the reason was because a loud minority in the community is dogging on it, im saying they’re wrong, its a great fucking show, and he should give it a try.
@@Hous3ofprosAlright you were the one who asked for my reasonning so her we go : Its a mystery show that doesnt make much sense and has very questionnable morality. Most of the Characters like May and Osha are boring and kinda confusing with their motives making it hard to sympathise, like when for example May decides to side with Sol instead of killing him I could see it go either way not because I know her very well and whta she stands for but because the only thing I know about this kid is that she doesn't children and hates jedi. And like this would be fine of this was her introduction scene but this is a scene that happens when we are WAAAAYYYY past the exposition part of the story we are at best at the inciding incident. Same with Osha tge only thing I know about Osha is that she is a nice person who doesn't really like her sister very much Also about that part about questionnable morality that I brought up : A young padawan quite litteraly gets mind tortured and no one conforts him like at all not even his master, the witches act extremely hostile towards them and all the jedi do is defend themsleves against them I already mentionned them mindtorturing Torphin but the leader decides to turns her and May into a smoke cloud, which alerts Sol since they are in combat which leads to him stabbing which is justified since has far has He knows she is about to attack him but then the show has the audacity to say He is in the wrong because she was going to let Osha go even tho He wouldn't know that because of her smug attitude earlier what He did was self defense and the show berates him for it for no reason. Another example is how apparently Trinity ( the woman jedi master with a green lightsaber) is in the wrong for wanting to save her mond controlled Wookie friend beacause it led to the death of all the other witches even tho once again the witches where the ones that started to be on the offensive. My final example is how apparently the jedi are in the wrong for telling the truth even tho it is litteraly what happened ( the "lie" was that accidently burned down the forteress which lead to the death of the witches which it technichally did) And for my final point the Characters mostly act like idiots For example for some reason Trintinity when fighting May doesn't use the force or her lightsaber despite the fact that May is harmed and could cause trouble which also leads to her underwhelming death. Sol lets Jeckie (HIS GODAMN PADAWAN) fight a Syth lord on her own instead of force pulling her towards him and running away with her. Sol for some reason doesn't use the force to grab both May and Osha when they are on a falling bridge instead He only uses it to not make the bridge fall. Osha doesn't immidiately knock out her sister to subue her no instead she stops talk to her while thinking what she doing is enought to immobalise her even tho she knows she is a dangerous criminal and could easily beat her up. And finally most of the characters are pretty underdevelloped, the most developed character is Sol and even then He is a pretty boring character and is relashionship with trinity is mostly told not shown. Making hard to buy. So Yeah this is why l don't like the acolyte.
I think its partially because real swordfighting isn't cinematic. its short, often one interaction. Hard to see. Often messy. And then over in one strike. And noobs are well known to double and kill better opponents a % of the time that is surprising. Unarmed is much more about conditioning and athleticism, determination and toughness can actually pull you through, there are typically many interactions per fight. And because the attacks require much more force to deal damage, they are more telegraphed and cinematic. Thats not to say i think swordfighting is lame or anything, i think its probably alot harder to choreograph for. Just my thoughts bro, its human nature to share thoughts. dont attack me for being wrong in the comments section im not claiming to be an expert etc etc.
We never see hand to hand combat involving jedi often in live action, so Acolyte exploring just how versatile and effective they are is amazing. I only wish the same effort went to the rest of the show. The High Republic Era is vast with untapped potential, and they barely scraped the surface. I highly recommend watching the "Night" lightsaber duel next, brilliant mixes of martial arts and dueling.
The fight scenes in the Ahsoka Series with Ezra, Sabine and Ahsoka all together were very well done, too. It looks like Ep. 5 of The Acolyte expanded on that fight choreography. 👍
Exactly! If they were written better and by people that understand the genre better, they would go for moves like that first... LOL... to "keep the peace" and keep anyone from getting hurt. NOT drawing their lightsaber first... lol
Yo can I suggest something here. Can you guys try out Broken Edge VR. It may not be accurate since I think it promotes attacking the blade too much but I’ve had a fun time!
Loved thid review, tired of the blind hate the show is giving. Yiu were critical and fairx made your complaints know but also gave credit where it was due
Yeah. I mean, the only Star Wars that I’ve truly loved is New Hope, Empire Strikes Back & Andor. Everything else is varying levels, from ‘yeah, that’s alright’ to ‘why in Odin’s name would they do this?’
Glad to see you reacting to the fights in this show! Wuxia genre and Jedi are a match made in heaven, and this choreography proves it. Acolyte is pretty good, it's just getting review bombed to hell, mostly by gullible fans of SW influencers who make money off of outrage. Very excited for you to watch the fight from the new episode! It has a really unique dynamic to it that I think you'll like
Hearing him say "Star Wars has done a good job because there are no lightsabers here. They solved it" seems amusing knowing what happens in the scenes in the episode "Night". That's when they prove lightsaber battles in Disney aren't a forgone conclusion. Some coregraphers aspire to more than just the mid level and awful fights the sequel trilogy often suffered with.
So, first fight from the moment Moss pulls the sabre? I am assuming this is all live react and you didn't study it. I did my own Sword Bogan 'expert' (cough) review over on the Rumbles so had a bit of a longer look and would like to bounce some opinions. The dagger throwing tempo doesn't match the blocking tempo. Also the CGI daggers they put in for Moss to block? Pretty sure at least one of them is going to clearly miss her. Moss blocks by first doing a one hand sabre cut, then picks up her second hand and does... something? Hangen? Vague fend? Then over head into a mittelhauw finishing Ochs on her doof. It works more or less. The plot calls for her to block the three daggers and she does so. However she then stays in doof ochs up until she gets talked into stopping the fight by some cod-logic about how a Jedi Always Leaves the Toilet Seat Down or something. We get the side view and she is still massively out of measure (esp considering Evil Twin has only a dagger) and has ample time to change guards. To me she should have gone to Tag dominant before dropping into Pflug or Langort. Evil Twin has a throwing knife, so why would you not attempt to put your blade between the two of you? Also taking your eyes off your opponent for that long? If you want to get stabbed why not just turn off your sabre completely? Moss - who should have been at Pflug or Langort and closer - should have seen Evil Twin look away and moved in for a quick love tap onto Evil Twin's dagger she is offering up infront of her. Disarm the girl and try and force her to negotiate again. Or... not... :) Also - Ep 4 where Master Squid Game slices the flying bug. I released he does a sort Ablauffen from Tag while moving to the side to give himself room. He ends up tricking the bug to concentrate on the blade and finishes it off with as he comes out of the Ablauffen. Was rather pleased with that to be honest. Also Also - Ep 5 is your standard theatrical sword work. A lot of flash and blows that look good but are there to deliberately miss to set up the 'plot' of who needs to win. Also a lot of teleporting of characters to where they need to be at that moment rather than building a proper spacial awareness. I guess your enjoyment will depend on if you want to be entertained or educated.
Im not a huge fan of the direction of Star Wars either. With that being said it did get kind of unnecessary with you constantly reiterating that you’re “not going to watch it”. I completely understand that, but we don’t need you to continuously repeat it.
It's a terrible show (No, I'm not being hard on it, I'm being realistic. The writing is awful), but the combat is actually fun. Andor is a pretty good show! Starts off building slowly, but by the end I loved it. Other good Star Wars: Season 1 of Mandalorian. That's it, that's the whole list, thanks bye
Darth Bane should be the silver lining in this Disney fiasco we've gotten ourselves into. Its the Epic of all Epics, should just get Karpyshyn to help.
It's not that everyone hates the show, it's just being review bombed by culture war idiots. The first season of the Acolyte, which hasn't even finished yet, has more online reviews than all three seasons of the Mandalorian combined. The fifth episode which just came out had a 2.6 rating on Rotten Tomatoes' audience score hours before it had actually dropped.
The Acolyte is...alright. It's nothing special, and it has a lot of flaws, but it doesn't deserve 1.5 stars. Especially when we haven't even seen the full season. It's not for everyone, that's for sure.
Star Wars... Yeah... RIP Star Wars 1977 - 1980... Sigh. And/Or is still bad, but in a different direction. Basically they got a guy who writes political thrillers and he took an existing idea and changed all the names around. I tried two eps. Bailed. The character was a dick. The world building was rushed (lives in a slum area where massive dog like creatures roam the streets and the wreaked shuttle like ship he lives in doesn't have a closable front door? Dude they are going to come in at night, steal ya ciggies and teabag your sleeping face. GET. A. DOOR.) The sister sub plot where they are kids growing up Lord of the Flies style goes nowhere and seems like cool looking filler. His motivation is to find his sister... until he doesn't. The planet they start on is not directly controlled by the Empire but is openly corrupt (and comments they if they don't bury the corruption the Empire will come in and fix it... so... Empire based? Drain the swamp?) Look, And/Or is 'different' to the other shows. It doesn't have the 'cameo of the week' stuff the other shows suffer from and cause no one really cares about/knows who And/Or is at least they are not destroying character lore. It is still bad. But different bad. So there, now you can say you have heard mixed things about it 😛
Random opinion that I’m going to spit out: The prequel‘s have the second worst choreography out of any of Star Wars, The only thing worse are the sequels and a handful of things that came after.
While I may respectfully disagree with your opinion about the Prequel fights (Duel of the Fates works, Anakin vs Obi Wan is great, Anakin and Obi Wan vs Dooku was good, all of this is my opinion), you are entitled to your opinion and I do agree the Sequel Films have fucking TRRRIBLE Coreography.
@Blizzards_holocron I recommend checking out Nick Gillard's channel where they fight tests that are actually better than the final film. My favorites are the a akin s dooku, anakin and obi wan vs dooku, and especially Palpatine vs jedi (where the stunt actor kills the first 3 jedi more convincingly as they do try to fight back instead of standing there, only to be weaved around and swiftly struck down). They're still flashy, but man, do they flow much better.
Carrie Anne Moss was taken down by a little girl with a KNIFE when her powers were ten times more refined. Also EASTERN MARTIAL ARTS have NO BUSINESS in star wars. Their SLOW and telegraphing moves were amateurish.
