In this episode of Theology Applied, Dr. Jared Moore joins the show to discuss his new book called “Lust of the Flesh.” John Owen insisted that the Christian should make no provisions for the flesh. Sins of omission can quickly become sins of commission. So when it comes to fighting our sin, best to head it off at the source.

I’m glad that you interviewed Jared Moore. A few years ago I had heard of the Re-Voice ideas and even knew a girl who repeated much of their rhetoric and I always knew something was off. I’m reading Greg Bahnsen’s short book on homosexuality and he quickly takes down lots of the sophist arguments these people offer but I’ll be sure to recommend Moore’s book in addressing the contemporary movement

A good prayer, imho, is to ask God to purify our desires, ways, and motives, so that we want the right things, for the right reasons, and pursue them the right ways.

Jesus said that if we lust (mental) we have already committed adultery (physical) and if we are angry (mental) we have already murdered (physical). So yes, our sinful mental desires are sin. Even before seeing this I was convicted with my past addiction to pronography. That sin of lust starts in the mind and for most stays hidden behind closed doors. So at that mental level and for those desires, we must repent even for the thoughts. Personal note: even if I have sinful dreams at night I feel the need to repent.

Amen! Also there's no such thing as "just desire" and never acting on it. Anyone in that position will surely act on it eventually.

@@michaellautermilch9185 Even if they wouldn't eventually act on it, God doesn't want a kingdom filled with people in eternal rebellion against Him, being restrained from doing the evil that they want to do deep down. That's not what heaven will be like at all, and that's not what we should make earth like. Before Jesus called out the Pharisees, they were seen as the most righteous people around, because they allegedly followed the entire law. Or so it was said. They may have followed the laws as written in deed, but they failed to follow them in heart. That is why Jesus said in His earthly ministry, when He corrected the Pharisees and their interpretation of scripture, that their righteousness must exceed that of the Pharisees. We rightly don't see the Pharisees as righteous today, but that context is important, because the heart aspect of the law is how it was meant to be all along. Jesus gave us this correct interpretation of the law 2,000 years ago, so it boggles the mind that people within the church are still debating this. You would think we would have this down after 2 millennia.

Be careful when paraphrasing. In Mat 5:22 Jesus says anger without cause. That's a big difference. Anger on itself is not a sin, but an emotion. Anger with righteous cause can prompt us to act. Be careful though, to not let anger (or any emotion) control you, cause that leads to sin. I agree with anything else though, God bless.

@burnak7383 Matthew 5:22 (LSB): 22 “But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca,’ shall be guilty before the Sanhedrin; and whoever says, ‘You fool,’ shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell. Never says without cause

I agree with Pastor Moore's assessment of the fallacies and pitfalls of Revoice and the like. However, after numerous exchanges with him online and admittedly through the limitations of Twitter/X or RU-vid comment sections, I have had to question in general the motivation, the credibility, qualifications and the efficacy of someone addressing such a deep sin issue as homosexuality without a clear understanding of the components of that sin in particular. For example, using his reference, Rosario Butterfield is to be trusted because of her testimony, her experience "from the inside", as it were, as she walks through her own repentance, her own struggles, and her own experience of the grace of God and the powerful work of God's sanctifying process in her own life. Jared Moore's points are scripturally sound, but he knows nothing subjectively of the struggle with homosexual sin and why and how this is such an intense spiritual battle. The closest analogy I can make is that those who struggle with alcoholism have found genuine freedom from alcoholism by attending meetings of AA where they can find hope and strength and a pattern or model for "deliverance" from alcoholism from others who have walked that path before them. Pastor Moore has no such experience; his approach is purely academic. I hate to be this harsh and seemingly judgmental, and it is with hesitation that I write this, but his lack of pastoral humility and his lack of a general understanding of the subjective nature of the struggles with homosexuality do more to alienate one caught in this particular spiritually profound battle, than it does to draw one into a genuinely salvific remedy, such as he rightfully proclaims is possible. In other words, he says it's possible, but he doesn't really know that, in the sense of having a profound, personal, intimate true "knowledge". I doubt if he has even personally pastored or counseled with a genuinely repentant man or woman who has struggled with same sex attraction, based upon the attitude he displays. In all of my discussions with him, and in viewing all of his interviews, I have not detected any kind of compassion for or understanding of one who struggles with homosexuality, but rather arrogant judgmentalism and condemnation. This was painfully evident in his "debate" or conversation with Preston Sprinkle, with whom I totally disagree. If Pastor Jared is sincerely interested in ministering to those dealing with the sin of homosexuality, I humbly suggest that he connect with those who have a pastoral heart towards such strugglers. Portland Fellowship, Restored Hope, Becket Cook, and many more are very capable resources, among others. Rosario says it's possible for genuine total change, but she can claim that authentically and with authority, because she has experienced the remedy; she knows of what she speaks. There are plenty of online resources, even here on RU-vid, for those who are, in a very real sense, desperate in their need and desire for Jesus' healing and forgiveness, and are willing to engage in genuine repentance. Walking out of homosexuality is not an academic exercise. For many of us it has been a life or death situation which remedy is only found in a genuine relationship with the living God, through true repentance and authentic faith in everything Jesus did, does, and is.

Ask him how one knows if they are fighting against sin in the spirit or the flesh? I was discussing stoics and other pagans that sometimes exhibit remarkable discipline and self control and peace throughout life

Thank you for your videos 😊 Always interesting! I’m wondering if you could possibly help me determine which bible I should buy as someone new to reading it, there are so many different versions to choose from. Thanks 😊

ESV is a good translation for reading. Stay away from NIV, NLT. The NKJV is also very good. If I were to list 3, my personal choice would be NKJV, ESV, NASB.

Some serious gymnastics year to call the nature of Christ temptation different than ours. And, worse, to re-orient God, given God, blessed, heterosexual desire as being sin. The Colossian heresy is alive and well
