I think you're a little harsh Tim. When talking about bicycle taxi people. Society needs all kinds of workers and to each their own capacities. At least these taxi people are working for a living. I've always thought that was the best measure of a person's character. I dont look down on any hard working person ...

He wasn't putting them down. He was trying to say I believe he would strive to do something that brought in more money...I know that's easier said then done if you don't know how to do more than that. But to work so hard and make maybe a 200 or so pesos isn't a good return on hard work.

I think you guys are kind of missing part of the point. Yeah it's good to work hard and if that's all you got then you start out just doing whatever you can, but you don't stay in that forever and just say oh this is all there is , I'm not going to try and improve my life. You live cheap and save everything you can and you upgrade from a pedal bike to maybe renting a motorized tricycle until you can go buy your own and so on and so forth. Progress is proven to make people happy even if it's just a little bit at a time

Considering living costs in The Philippines most likely this channel will just suffice to survive over there. Furthermore he might have some business going on back in the States, we are not sure, but let's assume this channel and the 3th party sponsors we see now and then will do roughly the job. Based on view counts this channel should revenue I think $ 1,500 to $ 2,000 per month. Which is, in The Philippines a decent amount. Tim often spoke about not being rich, but just moderate and managing to keep himself afloat. Aside from the RU-vid channel, what could a Western guy actually do in The Philippines? As accustomed to western salaries we would not take any job in The Philippines consider the very LOWWWW wage it yields. Simple full time work in a factory (10 hours per day, 6 days per week), you have maybe 10,000 - 15,000 pesos per month. ($180,- - $270,-), but that is pretty hard work. Investing, doing a RU-vid channel about your life there is much better. And my Filipino wife is an investor in fishing ponds in Dagupan. Also a pretty nice way of earning money.

Best advice I got from a Asian friend when living in China was if the Asian woman really cares about you that she will spend your money like it’s her money. Meaning, she will spend it very frugally. You will be amazed how little they can spend especially if they are from a poor background.

Your avocado plants may not produce the same type of fruit you want. The avocados we eat have specific genetics and to get that same fruit, you may actually need to take a cutting from the orginal plant
@Syvtek
@Syvtek 2 года назад
Correct. The chance that you will get a plant that bears edible fruit is near zero. Avocados are not true to seed. The avocados we eat are genetic anomalies that were found to taste good. To preserve the strain, Avocados are propagated by cuttings so the fruit will be the same texture, taste and quality as the original. Otherwise you are wasting years of your life growing a tree which will be worthless for it's fruit. If you want to grow an avocado tree, buy a cutting from the strain of avocado you want and forget about those seeds, Tim.

Buy now, pay later is not the whole US way of purchasing. Life in the US varies in regions or the many cultures residing here. Personally I can understand Chrissy's way of saving because I do that also. Life is easier when you don't aquire debts.
@johnc2438
@johnc2438 2 года назад
Yes... it's a mindset. If you have personal control, you don't need to fall into a trap of buy now, pay later (and forever). I'm an American retiree, living in the U.S. (amazing!), and everything my Filipina wife and I have is paid for. We saved, invested, and made sure our Social Security was in order -- and all debts were paid -- before we retired. Now, we can live comfortably in the U.S (yes, the U.S.!) without worrying about bills and even inflation. My wife is able to help others in lesser situations here in the States and in the Philippines, too. I like that. We never purchased a car with a down payment. If we could not afford a new car, we purchased a used car. And when we were able to purchase new cars, we drove them for years and cared for them. Look at the debt problems in China, for example. Until recently, everyone was comparing U.S. and Chinese finances (on a personal and state level). This is not an issue just with the U.S. "way" but a universal condition where people want their goodies now and will pay them off over years, never getting ahead of the curve. The person responsible for your finances is the person you see in the mirror each morning. Listen to that person's good advice and odds are you will be fine, no matter where you came from or where you live today.

Small tip, if you want to grow avocados, note the following. - The pit should only be halfway in the water (so put the toothpicks down into the jar). - When the plant is about 8 inches (20cm) long, cut it off 2 inches (5 cm) above the pit so you get a nice little bush and not just a long stem with a few leaves on it. - Avocados don't like direct sunlight at first. - Place the plant in loose, stony soil so that it will get its first leaves after pruning. - Avocados need regular watering, but not standing water in the pot have fun with, take care and i like your Vlogs, great stuff keep going !

Saving up and paying with cash is the weird way of doing things in the U.S., but its Grandmas good ol' fashioned advice. Nothing wrong with a good province Filipina that is steering you down the path to sacrifice now and wait for those big ticket items. The borrower is slave to the lender and its a good thing to live a debt free lifestyle, a lot less money stress on the marriage. I enjoyed the commentary, but as I was commenting with my asawa here with me in the U.S., it makes a big difference if you marry a province girl or a big city Filipina. They come from completely different backgrounds so money is going to be whole different conversation with a marte arte city girl than with a down to earth province girl.

I grew up poor in the Province and I used to go plant or harvest rice, corn, onion, cabbage, or whatever it is in season for a paltry sum or percentage depending on the agreement before work is done. It was so hard to make money that it is normal not to have money. I can't buy shoes, underwear, or whatever I need and it becomes normalized to a point where having money is an exception. I envied my friends whose parents had better incomes and could afford to buy them basic necessities. I remember hating the poverty I was in that I promised I will not end up poor. I worked hard and finished college but even after getting a good-paying job, I still couldn't save enough to buy basic things. I only got to save more and help my parents and siblings after working abroad and becoming an OFW. That was in the 80s. Nowadays, I think there are so many opportunities to create wealth in the Philippines without going overseas. Changing people's attitudes to go into money-making businesses instead of working for others is the main thing to overcome. We were taught to work hard instead of smart for the money. From what I see now, I think Pinoys are changing for the better. More people are becoming creative as far as making money goes.

It comes down to whether you are satisfied (happy) with your station in life or you need to climb the corporate ladder with more money as a goal. It exists in the Philippines and it exists here in America. Both places are alike in that people are just wired differently. I rest happily in the former category.

This is an insight coming from a Filipina. In the onset of your relationship with a Filipina, you have to communicate what you can put in, and what she needs to put into the relationship as well. It all boils down to 'communication'. What I see and know based on friends and people I know, these Westerners asked their Filipinas to stop working because they pledged to 'take care' of them. Take note, we live a humble life, and that little amount we earn per month is divided into too many parts. One of them is to support our family- parents for some. If you as a foreigner say ' I want you to stop working so we can have more time together, I'll take care of you', you have to be aware that whatever she spends on her salary is now your obligation. You see, a Filipina is not lazy, like other Westerns perceived us to be. We, rather are submissive. We submit to what our partners desire. If you don't want us to work, we obliged. And it's a big decision for us to make by the way because we're not working only for ourselves, but for those, we financially support as well. So, if your Filipina asks you for this and that, go back to the day when you said " I will take care of you', you don't need to work' moment. My advice: If you don't want your Filipinas asking you for anything, do not stop her from working or even stopping her from pursuing her dreams. You cannot expect us to quit our jobs to sit around, cook for you, wash your clothes, do the wife stuff, and NOT ask you 'money' to spend on for our family, or for whatever. Many Westerners see Filipinas as an object. We are not. And for those who are looking for a trophy wife because many of you are here: You can't expect a trophy wife, and not pay. You don't do that in the West, and you don't do that here or in any 3rd world country.

This living at ones level is not only a Filipino trait, it is similar throughout Asia, and even throughout the west. Most people, regardless of whether they are from the east or west, do not rise above the class status they were born into. Most middle class Americans do not suddenly become wealthy, but it seems they did because the cost and class levels of living is so much different from those of poor countries. For example, you work hard, but would you be able to afford what you have in the Philippines if you were living in NY? I grew up in NY, and most of the people I grew up with since the 50’s and 60’s are still living in either the same area, or in the same class status as what we grew up with. They struggled to put food on the table, and now have to worry about retirement. It’s actually become more difficult in the west because of unrealized expectations. So a kid whose father rides a trike in a poor country will tend to follow that path, with maybe a slight divergence. There are those who break through, in all cultures, and for many in the US, the military might be a way out, or some kind of special talent guided by luck breaks them through. But in the end, being content is about being able to live with what you have, without grand expectations; but, if you find a special path, as you have, there are great benefits to those who recognize that path and follow it.

That seems fair. If everyone you went to school with got rich? You'd end up in a country with a president who can't compete a sentence, who's son has seen more coke than Pepsi, who has commited 10+ federal crimes, elected as the most popular president of all time. Inflation would rise rapidly as your rich friends spend money they do not have. For them to gain money, would mean that everyone below them would see a wage decrease with inflation. What's it St now, 20%? I'm talking in the real world. Food prices, gas prices, energy prices. Energy prices increases 400% in UK since 2020 January. Are you sure you want that? Wait....

I think a Filipina that grew up with out all the shiny and fancy things will be 1 of 2 people when there is money, she will either remain the humble person she was or she's going to go extravagant and buy things she's never had or thought she would have. Everyone wants to have a better life, and money can help provide that in having a roof over your head, food on your table, clothes on your back, safety and security, there's nothing wrong with wanting that in life, it's when you think there's an unlimited supply of money and waste it on unnecessary things that it becomes a problem. Another factor could be in the western world, many were brought up learning the value of money, being taught to be financially responsible, and working hard to earn it (Not exactly what's going on in the world now with technology and social media making everything quick and easy). On the flip side of those trike drivers that are using bikes, maybe they are doing what they have to in order to change their situation, start out with the bike and save up for a motor bike, then upgrade their trike to motorized to make more from it or ditch the trike and be a food delivery person and make more from it, or it could be they're doing what ever they can just to survive because there are no other opportunities for them. You pretty much need a university degree just to work at Jolibee's or as a cashier, is it really that difficult to push a button on a cash register. Her family was surviving before the foreigner got there, they will survive without his assistance too, it should be the foreigners choice whether he wants to help out, he's the one that worked his butt off most of his life to EARN the money he has, and shouldn't just be expected to give it away. As you said it's important to talk about your intentions and her/her family expectations right up front, set and STICK TO those boundaries, if you can't reach a common ground, better to move on and look for someone else, because it will create a lot more problems down the road and you won't be happy.

You started it because obviously you want to get her to like you , plus she’s much younger than you and that was the whole thing as I see it ! She didn’t come from a wealthy family and you indulged her to staying in a five star hotel, and buying her clothes and you did not really pay attention to what you’re doing at the time and now she’s used to the good things in life, instead of letting her find that out little bit at the time, but you have your own idea and you let it go, and gave her everything you think that you want her to taste what good life is all about! The bottom line, you will have a hard changing that because it’s something that she knows it’s what she wanted and it’s her way now or the highway! I’m from America fir many years now, but my husband never in our married life that he indulged me to anything like you’d done with your wife now! And through the years I’ve found my own nitch in my personal life and I started from not knowing anything but found out that what I wanted in life is not all about what my husband and I had but what I learned that I can find and discern my likes and dislikes and I realized that I have better taste about everything that I want and have than my husband does! And I started from a humble beginning to where I am today and I did it all on my own without my husbands influences one way or the other! In your case, it’s all a very different story that is everything you wanted from the very start! Nobody to blame but you! Life goes on! And I hope you stay together for the rest of your life with no money problems, etc!

Interesting take, from my experience living in the Philippines, the need to be upwardly mobile or go getter, depends of several factors like are there other common examples of different people being successful, are there any opportunities or support, do you have connections or direction enough to pursue opportunities and of course all this with the basic need to eat and have shelter. The Philippines is not blessed with the many opportunities like other western countries where all you have to do is work hard to at least have a little bit of something, in that country you can toll day in and day out just for your next meal.

Believe it or not the Philippines and the way they live their lives seem to be happier than people in the West who are always scheming, climbing on the backs of others to get to the top. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with ambition but money does not necessarily make a person happy especially when they don't have time to spend it because they're burning both ends of the candle on the job. I think that's one thing that's attractive to American men or foreign men in general is the lack of materialistic females in the Philippines. In the states when you first meet a girl within the first minute or two she's wanting to know what you do for a living only for her to determine how long she's going to talk to you unlike filipinas who you can carry on a conversation with for a long time and they will never ask you about your money or what you do for a living. I find that extremely refreshing.

My Mom came from a former business class old family and that means we were not buying more clothes or shoes, only for special occasions or when it doesnt fit anymore. Fortunately I had an Aunt and Grandma who gives me more things than the usual 1 black shoes and 1 pair of very cheap so called sport sneakers. I remember when I went to this International school in KSA and twice skid on the damp course for relay racing coz my sneakers cannot grip the floor. I complained but my Mom said no budget! So I told my Tito who attends the church services and also a pastor in the what they called The Mission. They were Methodist. Some Americans couples with kids who needs baby sitters attend too. I got a job making 12 riyals for 3 hours plus free snacks! My Mom has 4 years of home economics and 1 year of pharma, but my Dad did not want her to work. To my surprise he said that I could. Now I was only 13 years old, but I said I will have my money to buy my sport shoes so that I wont slide and hurt myself next school yr. My Mom has this mentality that since I have one it will have to do coz my foot will get bigger LOL. Unfortunately I have a petite size. I only had size5 and since I got 3 kids Im now size 6.5. When I reached 18 yrs of age my Mom, did get me some expensive designer Italian and french shoes and clothes as well in Europe.. I was before this buying Tom MCaans shoes and had at least 1 Candy high heeled sandals, everytime I went to the USA. Now with my kids our lifestyle changed, I prefer to buy for my kids and less for us the parents. This of course is the norm specially here in PI. My expenses now just for electricity runs upto 500USD. That includes a 2 story apartment and a separate one where my son and our grandkids are staying. Im prepping so I have more canned tuna stocks, vienna sausages, bottled olives and olive oils, Chili Nachos, vitamins, shampoos, soap atbp. No more new Italianne shoes nor bags nor clothes or even branded glasses coz I already have a collection of them and then some. Just be more practical and buy local from Malls and just make do in these pandemic times. I think Filipinas are relatively more resilient and less to complain about wants vs needs. But more Filipinas now are able to go out of the country and provide for their families too. Our nurses alone are world reknowned for their brand of care and highly valued by many countries. We also hold quite a nos of International beauty queens, some were born outside the country but had Filipina mothers. And now we even have women wordclass gold medalist athletes in weight lifting unheard of coz 80yrs ago nobody can even see the girls heels! Its in our DNA to be competitive and bring home the gold. I hope that whoever will marry a Filipina will first get to know her very well. See to it that he will be able to treasure her, for if you do, they will love and care for him and family for the rest of her life!

Thats because Steve, Australia has become to multicultural and diverse in relation to migration etc; in my opinion.. It's not like it was 30 years ago where people earned their money and worked hard for it and also typically, it was your normal average Australian back then compared to now, where you got mixed nationalities.. Multiculturalism has always been a thing with Australia, but I think in the last 10 - 15 years, it's evolved too much. I visit parts of Asia when i can, and see a big difference in countries like Thailand or Vietnam vs Australia; you get people that are much more respectful and happy with what they have to what Australia is and you just get people here that moan, complain and worry about what they don't have, instead of what they do have.

Funny you talked about buying a house. That was my feeling we bought land and paid it off first. When the land was paid for i told my gf to use the land as collateral and borrow money from bank to pay mortgage. She couldn't believe i said that. She said she didn't want someone to be able to take it away and didn't want to pay interest. So I sent her money each month and she would go to the hardware store and every month buy things until eventually she had enough to begin to drill well and put in foundation. She did this over a course of couple years and the day came when she moved in with her kids while it was being completed. So now we have a house and land and no mortgage. It took time and we still have more to finish but it has everything necessary so when I retire there in September only costs will be food and electricity etc. I think Filipinas are very smart even though it may go against western culture.

Yeah one of the biggest issues I have staying in PH is the lack of people around me who are ambitious. I am a 100% believer that you will become the average of the 5 closest people around you. Having online friends who are ambitious helps, but it's not the same as in person influence.

An interesting vlog Tim,and I have to agree with you.Lynlyns family needed a new motorcycle to replace the old wreck that had seen its days before the typhoon Odette finished it off.Lynlyn canvased ever reseller in Ubay to get the best deal for the cash that I sent over.I could hardly believe my ears when she reported back to me that some of the resellers didnt want a cash sale,they wanted credit sales so they could obviously gouge as much out of the sale as they could.

From my own experiances I might say that you are a blessed man ! I know that you're not suppose to generalize but I can say , when it comes to here in scandivia that there has been a lot of problems about bringing your girlfriend here . Many of these philippinas goes beserk when they come here and start partying and gambling right away . Frankly , I know only 1 family that the marriage lasted longer than 5 years ! My own lasted that long and most of my friends that was married divorced after 5 years . Im still paying of bills , 30 year after the divorce , on an aparment that I dont even own !

My Filipina wife is very frugal as she was raised in the Province. Her and her family are all educated with good jobs but still frugal. Even here now in the United States she is frugal as it's in her DNA. She's the complete opposite of many American women who have a "What have you done for me lately?" mentality. Filipinas make some of the best wives in the world.

Money does NOT buy happiness...BUT....Money helps to buy more choices in life. I like choices, choices make me happy. If your choices are limited, your happiness and standard of living are also limited. I'll chose having Money and choices anyday over NOT having money and the headaches of limited choice in life... Just my .02 cents...😉🙂

If her closet is full of clothes and she has many shoes, backpacks, and hats - don't fool yourself. It means the patern is changing. You look at a Filipina and ask yourself. How much of the above did she have when I met her and how much does she have know? Each year it will get more and more until it is out of control! It starts with the above. Then it moves to the different types of pans and cookware, then etc... You income is fixecd and her tast keeps increasing until you say no or stop then its the silent mode! Let's not foreget the gifts each year keep getting bigger and bigger. Then more people are getting gifts. It's all coming out of your pocket since day one but it is a gradual Money Suck! Then instead of buying groceries for yourself you buying it for her family, aunt, uncle, etc.... Slow money suck then you wake up and to late. It's called the sleeping snake!

Initially, you spoke of clothing. Back in the 70s and early 80s, the middle class in the Subic area (middle class would be those folks who held career type jobs at the U.S. Naval facilities and then at Clark AFB in Pampanga) typically hired a good tailor and/or a "master (pattern) cutter. But that middle class went away with the base closures in September of 1992. And I think you hit the nail on the head when you discussed the mindset of the average family in PI. You only know what you know. Another thing that you didn't refer to is the controlling/rich class there don't want that class to expand. They seem to want people to stay in their state of economic condition. Don't see much personal financial teaching there and not much allowed acceptance of successful entrepreneurial spirit without bribes negotiated and fulfilled. And that's a shame. The Philippines has so much in the way of natural resources. And their soil is prime for growing beans and peas rather than so much rice (MUCH, much more protein in beans than in rice). Coffee. Tea.

Personally I don't see the no income side as a negative specifically from the Filipina aspect because a lot of western women are that way, stay at home moms for instance. So really I only see the plus side of Filipina women of being frugal. I know there are probably some that aren't but a lot of western women are definitely not.

Boundaries are the key, if you set the expectation early, and stick to it, you won’t be a cash cow to the family, if you slip up a few times it will be expected. I find that when I’m visiting the family I like to cook and I like to make things, but the family will not eat in front of me, they take their food and go elsewhere to eat, I brought a 50 kg bag of rice The last time I was there and nobody said thank you so that won’t happen again, the Filipina will always be loyal to her parents and feel like they owe their birthright and they are a resource to their parents for retirement, that will not be part of my life and my obligation. The culture has not understood that children are something you make a choice for and not an income producing asset, furthermore the expectation for the women versus the boys is different, I find that the boys that I see are very lazy and the women are willing to work really hard, I’m not trying to be argumentative or debate this this is just my observation and there’s nothing I can do about it except set my boundaries

It all depends on whether you are moving to the Philippines or bringing your significant other to your home country. If you live in the Philippines, she will stay accustomed to living low budget. If you bring her to the west, she will change completely - and I'm talking from experience - and much will never be enough.
