My first ever project using epoxy resin was yesterday. My husband was cutting up a fallen black walnut and decided to try making me a bench out of a nice straight portion. The 2 pieces to be the “legs” he’d initially cut out a shelf with back. In so doing, it created accidental slots in the end of each log leg. I researched epoxy resin to fill the slots and we gave it our first try yesterday. I did use a deep pour epoxy that was 2:1 and we used duct tape to the dam the sides of the logs. But there was enough depth (2-4” and maybe close to 6” depth at deepest) and width (about 8” wide and cut was 1/4”) that it started seeping out of the bottom of the duct tape. The smaller one didn’t leak at first (maybe it was still being absorbed by the wood?). But later it also leaked mostly out 😭. Only one void stayed full; the one that didn’t have any exit holes on the side of the log. I’ve seen some videos where people will wait 15 min after mixing to start pouring. But your mention of this kind of epoxy being so liquidy makes me wonder if that would help much with the long set up time? Would it have been better to pour just a little and take more days to fill the entire voids? This bench will live outside and these deep pours were for the purpose of preventing rotting form moisture. They’ll be covered with the seat of the bench. But I’m not sure if it’s worth trying again today with more material now that the insides of the voids are at least coated in the epoxy. Thank you for showing your process and the fail, so we can be encouraged not to give up.

Not sure that's such a happy little tree anymore! The way that slab is shaped always puts me in mind of a coast line. Inset in the epoxy I'd love to see a galleon 'anchored' off shore in the sea of blue, with a couple of row boats, one en route, one beached with explorers climbing up from it to the table top. You actually explain what you're doing, finally an actual tutorial. I have a long wood stump with a crack going along the entire side. I've already sanded the top and sides I'm wondering if I put it upside down, use the matte tape on the top and on the sides (the opening St it's widest is 3/4 in wide, I don't know if the tape will stay and be self contained. Maybe reinforce with duct tape on the sides?
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 2 года назад
For something like that I'd probably use Matt tape but then reinforce the edge with a little bit of hot glue or silicone caulk. You also want to make sure you use an epoxy that's thin enough to make it all the way down to the bottom and let bubbles rise all the way up. Most epoxies would be a bit too thick for that.

Superb!! Love the colour... I’m curious about the smaller fills. You mentioned that because its watery it seeps further in the wood. I see that there’s a lot of epoxy on the top surrounding the smaller fills. In my experience working with epoxy this will create a difference in the end finish. Do you expect to remove all of what was sitting on top while thicknessing? Or will you do a full epoxy top coat maybe? Just curious.. splendid job James, sucks about the spill..

So I have a question. I'm planning to make a pouring on a live edge table and I'm thinking about which side to put on bottom. Bottom side or top side? The thing is that bottom side is more flat and it will help me with sealing the bottom part which has 2 big holes. I'm thinking if the resin will be absorbed by wood and the level starts dropping. Also I have sealed the surrounding walls for pouring. I'd really like your input.

Thank you for your tips!! So I'm thinking about doing it with layers of packing tape and also add in between white silicone(used in the bathroom usually). I want to put silicone around a big hole on the slab, and then cover it with packing tape, and then turn it over to fill it with resin. Do you think it's going to work?
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 2 года назад
I don't think I would use packing tape. The problem is if you get one wrinkle in the packing tape or one slight issue in one seam it will all leak out. Unless it's a smaller fill that one or two strips of packing table cover. But if you're doing a larger area I would go with a sheet of plastic.

As we were fond of saying in the Navy, "shit happens." You learn from your experiences, and I'm learning as well As you were laying down the tape, I thought that you might get better bonding to the wood if you ran over it with a heat gun to soften the stickum and then pressed it down with a veneer or wallpaper roller. You now have an opportunity to show how you intend to clean up the spilled epoxy, both on the wood slab and on the floor. For the floor, can I suggest you go straight for the power tools and rent a floor sander. I saw you flatten your floors upstairs by hand. If anyone wants to see that, they can look in your backcatalogue. Thanx for dealing with this. Hopefully, now that I've seen this, it'll never happen to me.
@rhpsoregon
@rhpsoregon 6 лет назад
Oh and a few quick related questions... I've heard that "nothing sticks like gaffer's tape". Being from technical theatre, you should know it that's actually true. Is it? Is it waterproof? Would it make a good damming tape for epoxy fills?
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 6 лет назад
LOL. I'll be using a belt sander to clean it also floor. And the extra epoxy on the wood is not a problem because I have not done the final flat thing on the table. Gaff tape is great for small voids but it doesn't work as well for the larger things. It is great in heat applications.

@mamabearssheshedtracykeato6941
Oh you poor thing! I would hate to have to get that off the floor... Oh my word. I am kind of wondering why you didn't put the straight edges on the outside and the voids on the inside, creating a square table where you can just pour it all at once?
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 6 лет назад
I did not want a river table. And I much prefer the live-edge on the outside it gives the table a lot more character not to mention that would require around $1,500 worth of epoxy. As opposed to the $300 in spending on filling just this.
@mikemyles4916
@mikemyles4916 3 года назад
I've recently tried my hand at using epoxy to fill voids, and had the same run out problem on a test piece. I used foil tape, and I think the adhesive just wasn't strong enough. I planned to try tuck tape instead, but will give the mat tape a try too. I also experienced the drop in level from the wood absorbing thin epoxy. I've seen some builders recommend pre-coating inside edges with a thin coat of epoxy before a pour, to stop the wood from absorbing the thin deep pour epoxy. Have you tried that before? I'm not sure if it's an extra step that's worth doing.
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 3 года назад
Right on. Usually depending upon the slab I either use tyvek tape or wrestling mat tape. I find the wrestling mat tape covers larger voids much better but the tyvek tape has a much better adhesive. The problem is both of them are incredibly expensive tapes. I have done preliminary pores before to try and fill and that does help to some extent but in this case it would cause a problem of seeing differences in the two different types of epoxy. I really wanted a perfectly clear transition to the wood. so in the end it just depends on the particular application.
@mikemyles4916
@mikemyles4916 3 года назад
@@WoodByWright - I tried the mat tape, and it held for a few hours, but in the morning I found half the pour had leaked out the bottom into the basin I had the test piece over. I'm going to go with Tyvek next to maximize adhesive grip. May try a second test block with Gorilla tape too. I want to get a successful test result before I pour the real piece.

I need an 80 inch kitchen counter top and I hate MDF but, I am trying to find a video or find out if it is possible to seal the bottom of a laminate counter top by using a wood filler or even gluing another maybe 1/4 inch plywood on the bottom of it so I could epoxy the top and the bottom of the counter top? Would have using water as a test to see if everything is sealed would have been a good idea?
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 6 лет назад
you could but then you would have to wait a month or more to bring the wood back to an ambient humidity.

Wood By Wright well I did the pour but unfortunately mixed the ecopoxy by weight instead of volume. Hopefully it will still cure.

ya there would have been a steady stream of my dads slow swearing if i found that on my floor lol. So in regards to the bottom layer, what is the reason for using it to get the color instead of the eco? the consistency or more just wanting to try out a couple things before hand?
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 6 лет назад
I thought the thicker West system would help plug any holes ahead of the liquid. plus it is a bit cheaper.
@volinarsworkshop4818
@volinarsworkshop4818 6 лет назад
i figured it was more to get that wavy patterning with something thicker. How does the west handle in regards to fumes and such. I like that eco is more earth friendly but ya you are definitely paying for the quality.
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 6 лет назад
West has more fumes and you have to be careful of runaway temps but it leaves a smooth surface.

@gcranston83

At around 10 minutes you mention that the bigger voids will put more pressure on the tape/plastic? It may seem counterintuitive but pressure depends only on depth and not on the area of the pour. So whether it's a small hole or a huge void, if you're filling the full thickness it will be the same pressure. The larger voids do have more weight of liquid epoxy in them so if for some reason you didn't have the slab flat on your bench you'd need to support it some other way, and they have more epoxy in them to spill onto your floor, but in terms of pressure working its way around your tape seal the small holes and large voids need the same attention.
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright Год назад
The pressure is not in the vertical column of liquid as you'd be thinking about water pressure. The pressure comes from just having a larger mass of weight. That will sag the tape more. Except the tape has to spend a larger distance it has to do more work.
