Winter is here and the new Morton shed is finished, so are moving machinery and equipment around. The Kenworth semi truck was dead again so I installed new batteries.

Gear reduction starters take less power to get them to start turning but they use same amps and voltage afterwards as old style starter do. Have to be careful how many amps to feed gear reduction starters can't put four 1000amp batteries to them. Most trucks today have only 3 batteries in them now. Seen few with only 2 batteries that where from southern states. Peterbilt postal trucks in my area have 2 batteries. Junk battery cables to starter can make them crank slow at first too. Use to be ran 2 pos and 2 neg cables to starter but only they use bigger cables so it 1 of each going to starter now

Hey Zack! On your Peterbuilt, disconnect the negative battery terminal and place a test light between the negative post and the negative cable clamp. If it lights up, you have a voltage draw that's draining your batteries. Leave the light connected and start pulling fuses one at a time and see if it goes out. If the light goes out when you pull a fuse, that's the circuit that's causing the death of batteries. Then you need to check that circuit to see why it's draining batteries.

Zach, Not sure if you have done this or maybe it has been mentioned. Regarding your battery issues, it is VERY important to clean all the connections and grounds on your semis and tractors. You will want them to shine in order to work the best. Clean them with soap and water and a wire brush. This include the battery cables, wires on the firewall and the ground wires to the frame. If you don’t see any improvement, there could be corrosion inside your battery wires. Lastly, 3 batteries on a semi is pretty rare these days. Most have 4 especially for you in the cold temps of MN. My Dad and used to own a fleet of semis hauling throughout the Midwest and South. Clean grounds and connections is a common issue for us in the Northern climates. Hope this helps!

I worked in a starter shop for many years. A really common problem with trucks is the batteries ground to the frame, then frame to starter. The connections corrode/rust and the trucks won’t hardly turn over. If your trucks are set up this way, usually a 2/0 ground cable from batteries to the starter will help with slow starting issues.

Hey Zach, I see a lot of good comments about your battery issues. A lot of good mechanics and ideas floating around. I’ll make this quick! Maintaining clean batteries and connections is best practice for preservation of batteries during long storage periods. Dirt, dust and debri can conduct electricity with easy and creates a “parasitic” draw, thus depleting your batteries. As mentioned by others, cables with corrosion on the inside can increase amperage pull and drain them faster when starting, having a starter that’s about to go bad, will pull to much power as well. My best guess for it is dirty batteries creating a parasitic draw. I hope you see this! Have a great rest of the year and thank you for the great content!
@alpaul9700

Yes, and installing manual disconnects on the negative post to the frame, of all your equipment will save them from discharging due to a parasitic draw. When yer by yourself & yer truck/tractor won't fire I just use an old rag with a little starting fluid sprayed on it & just stuff it in the air intake of the air cleaner. No need to take the covers off, the fumes from the fluid will start he engine every time!

Zach, there seems to be a big difference in tire technology when comparing the US to the UK or even Europe. I went to Michelin and took part in some field tests (filmed it and put up on my channel) What are your views regarding the new VF type of tires vs maybe tracks ?

The hard cranking may be cables or battery terminals. Get a thermal imager and look for high resistance and hot cables and connections. And the gear reduction starters help too. 15:13 15:17 15:07

Good idea to Buff and wax that Kenworth. She's really looking faded. Love the new shed you'll be able to get a lot of equipment in there out of the weather.

@Millennialfarmermediateam Hi Zack and family I am a apple grower in Tasmania Australia In a small town called Geeveston. My family has been growing apples here since 1845 Yes you would think we would know better by now. I have been watching your channel for a long while now and you have sometimes kept me going and the term Keep it between the rows has a lot of different meanings when farming in the financial and political climate we are in these days I have been in community service clubs and my industry body associations and now I give insight to the Australian horticultural and Enervation on R&D and finance. I have also had the pleasure of helping to setting up a post graduate scholarship at the university of Tasmania that has been running now for 17 years. Me Dad passed away in 2016 in the middle of the apple season, of which I told him he wasn’t allowed to do 🤪 but friends came and ran my harvest whilst I arranged Dad’s funeral. I will never forget that, a mate just rang up and said I am finished for a wile and can I help, Well what can you say after you stop crying but yes and thank you. You’re donations and exposure to a similar course is to be commended I have the same blunt view on similar topics and I don’t hold back when I am asked to speak on the media. People just know to take cover now because they know what is coming. But I continue to be invited to speak so I haven’t upset everyone yet. Most people are to frightened to tell the truth as it is. Now what the hell is going on with nitrogen in the US It is starting to make traction in Australia and I have been trying to get them when making their calculations on were zero is to take into account we’re we have come from and what we use now compared to the past. I take into account the nitrogen in the rain and clover in the rows when doing our fertiliser program for the year. Any way I will stop there as I could go on for ever. Love the channels love seeing you your sun and Dad farming and dealing with whatever is thrown at you Regards John Ps the same thing happen to us at the same time it is spooky 👍 Keep it between the rows

I took care of a lot of battery problems by installing a ground disconnect switch on my trucks.when they sit in storgage for a period of time Its was very inexpensive just mounting it on the side of the battery box and extending the ground cables to connect to it , most auto suppliers have them you will be happy for it.

Replace the starters with high torque starters. You'll see a big difference in starting. Also put battery disconnect switches. Save you a lot of headaches

As far as the semis slow cranking, look into the delco remy gear reduction starters. I put them on both our semis and sprayer and they crank over faster than ever now and fire up no problem

Hey Zach, you may not see this since this is obviously an old video. We had a Freightliner that started the same way as your Kenworth. Hit the switch and it was like it paused trying to turn it over. We found an extra ground that was left unhooked that went from the starter ground to the battery ground. I'd triple check you don't have an additional ground thats unhooked, maybe add an extra ground and give it a try.

Run a ground wire straight to starter from batteries. The truck manufacturers like to frame ground alot between starter n batteries. Lose amperage that way. The new gear reduction starters spin faster n take less "juice"🙂 to turn them. Denso makes a good one. They're much lighter too. Old truckers tip is to push clutch in on cold start while cranking.

We had the same issue with 2 of our trucks not starting. Brand new batterys and started the same way yours did. We put new starters in them and it fixed the problem. Old starters were getting tired and drawing way more amps to get going therefore why it always sounded like the batterys were not enough juice

Check the fuel pump on the service truck, that could be why it doesn't like to start after it has been sitting for any length of time.

used to have the same problem backing the planes out of the hanger in the navy.. If you can put a hitch on the front of the truck it is alot easier.. The front of the truck moves side to side faster and you are looking at what you are pushing..

I have never owned any and they may be more trouble than there worth: however I have recently seen inexpensive strap on ice cleats for boots. You may want to look at them and see if you think they would help you walk safer on the ice.
