Its implied that Daemon told them if they couldn't get Aemond then they should try to get "a son for a son", so they settled for Aegons son.

I dunno how so many people miss this. It's the title of the episode, it is what he said to Rhaenys earlier in the episode, and it is what Blood says to cheese "A son for a son he said" when he finds Cheese with Helaena.

I don’t even think it’s implied, I think it’s blatant. Blood says “he said a son for a son, does she look like a son?” In the book it’s totally different because daemon says exactly what he wants.

22:00 Cheese asks "What if we can't find him?" and before Daemon answers it cuts away. Later we hear Blood saying "no head, no gold" and "son for a son" both phrases that we did not hear Daemon say to them, meaning it must have been said off screen to leave it more ambiguous.

The book is much worse. Helaena and Aegon have 3 children, the twins and a younger son. Blood and Cheese capture them and then make Helaena choose between the 2 boys. She chooses the youngest, to which Blood then says to the kid, see mom wants you dead, and then kills the older brother in front of everyone.

Also note that they told her that if she doesn't pick quickly enough that Blood will rape her little girl and then kill all three kids.

Nice to see you didnt skip the pan in on Daemon's face, clearly that was important but 19 out 20 reactors skip and then act surprised. PLAN B. This was a hail mary shot, one chance... if they cant find Aemond they couldnt just come back later... so plan b... a son for a son, take the heir. They didnt show Daemond's response because then it would have ruined the surprise, so they cut off his response.

I saw somebody else point this out: in the scene of Rhaenyra mourning Lucerys on the beach, Syrax is also mourning because the dragon Lucerys was riding and bonded to was Arrax, one of Syrax's children. So that scene is two mothers mourning their children.

The show seems to like to hide Daemons plans in assumptions about things said off screen. Like with his plans with Laenors lover we just get screen time of him saying "a quick death, one with witnesses", when it's clear they had an elaborate scheme to fake Leanors death. And in this episode, Cheese hears that Daemon wants Aemond, but then he asks "alright, but what if we can't find em?" which obviously requires some sort of response that we don't get to hear. But like .... I think it's pretty clear.

I think they just hide it because it will be less dramatic if we knew before what the plan B was. When you look again the smile of daemon after they ask if they don't find Aemond..... He clearly told them to kill the little heir. It's a genius idea for people who didn't read the book. They all are "No way not the children" 😱

To be honest, I like the way the scene was adapted and handled this episode, even the cutaway that implies Daemon’s next words. Remember he said this out loud in the beginning, “make it a son for a son.” There’s also the title of the episode… But if this many people are getting confused and misinterpreting the final scene, there’s got to be a better way they could have handled it. Again, I like it, but SOOO many people have gotten confused by it, so.. Either way, great reaction! Also, your makeup is always so gorgeous 🫶

This confused a lot of reactors because it's easy to miss. They asked Daemon what to do if they can't find Aemond. And he sort of smiled, but it cut away before we heard his answer. When they're with the queen and her children, they revealed that his answer was "a son for a son." So basically any son of the Hightowers was the backup if they couldn't find Aemond.

No, it was supposed to be Aemond but they didn't know their way around the royal chambers so they took the easy way out. Bear in mind the look Daemon gave Blood and Cheese when they asked what to do if they couldn't find Aemond. That was an unspoken command.

This might be unpopular, but I'm glad that they're showing more humanity from Aegon. I feel like they tried to make him too unlikeable in season 1, so I'm glad they're trying to go back on that. In a conflict like this, both sides should be complex, so I'm glad they're fixing the issue of the greens being painted as clear villains in season 1

When they asked what to do is they couldn't find Aemond. It cut away so the ending wouldn't be spoiled. He said something like "a son for a son." They went with plan b.

Appreciate the effort you put in Jacqui with the filmmaking commentary. Just one thing you might have missed. The title of the episode "A Son for a Son" is said twice in this episode. The first time by Daemon, at the beginning of the episode when talking to Rhaenys, and the second time by Blood, during the climactic scene. It's not too hard to figure out that Daemon gave that instruction in answer to Cheese's question of "what if we can't find him?".

I love how the show exposes Mushroom who told the B&C. Of course he will make it more dramatic than what actually transpired. He is a court fool. Btw i dont think anyone noticed but Larys waiting on the stairs is a parallel to Lord Caswell ( the guy that was hanged for supporting Rhaenyra) who he tattled and killed

I like how you don't shy away from referencing clips that are further ahead in the episode; I think most reactors avoid that because it's a bit "spoilery", but people watching reaction videos will virtually always have watched the episode already. I enjoy it.

The show specialises in careful cutaways from Daemon which leave viewers in doubt; Daemon, rock in hand, in The Vale with his wife, at the after party when he was reported to have toasted, "Heir for a day". We never heard him say it. And here where Cheese asks, "And what if we don't find him?"

So I find the look Deamon’s face after Cheese asks “What if we can’t find him? (Aemond)” increasingly more interesting with every reaction I watch because I initially read it as Damon saying “Well, any son will do, Aemond is the primary target, but if,for whatever reason you can’t find him, any other son is second best.” But what a lot of other people seem to be interpreting it as is “That’s not an option. Come back with Aemond’s head or not at all.” It didn’t seem to me that Blood and Cheese were intentionally looking for anyone other than Aemond - as per Daemon’s instructions, but more like they were accidentally discovered by Helaena, had lost the element of surprise and had to cut their losses and settle for Jaehaerys because he was better than nothing. It makes me really interested to see how Daemon is going to react to this once you find out.

Jacqui, you forgot that Cheese specifically asked Daemon what to do if they didn't find Aemond and the scene was cut before we knew the answer. The point is that Aegon's children are fair game: a son for a son. Just for you to know, the scene in the book is different and crueler. Aegon and Helaena have 3 kids: the twins Jaehaerys and Jaehaera, and a younger son called Maelor. Blood and Cheese got the two boys and made Helaena choose which one would be killed. She chose Maelor, but Jaehaerys was killed anyway and they told Maelor that her mom wanted him dead.

The thing is that at least one green prince had to die, obviously the first option was Aemond but if they couldn't get him, the assassins had to get someone else and not come back empty-handed.
