Hitman: Agent 47 is the new movie adaptation of the stealth-and-cover video game...and you all know how much I love movies based on video games! Here we're dissecting some of the movie details, specifically the ultra futuristic armor that John Smith sports to try to take down Agent 47. We'll be looking at the latest in high-tech armor and figuring out whether it's actually possible to create bullet-proof skin.
When we came up with the idea for this Film Theory, Fox said they'd like to sponsor us! A big thanks to them for their support in making this video happen and letting us take a sneak peek at the film to make sure we got our facts straight!
Like the theme song? Thanks to Carf Darko!

Even if his skin is bulletproof, it's gonna hurt like fuck getting shot. I mean, your skin can deflect a paintball but it still fucking hurts.

thesuicidefox yeah, I'd rather have armor over my skin. you know, where I don't feel pain.
@joshualee204

Javier Beltran you would still feel pain on impact. Although i'm not sure how big the difference in pain would be, but i'm pretty sure it wont be significant as you skin probably wasn't reducing much of the damage from a bullet shot anyway.
@ObiJuanKonobi

Joshua Lee idk, never seen the shit. If it distributes the force then I don't think it'd be that painful. But then again it could act like a trampoline. Again I've done zero research.

Joshua Lee To get through to the sub-dermal armor, it actually needs to GO THROUGH your epidermis. :/ That's going to be painful. Nothing serious, though, probably... maybe a cut and a bruise there. If it's a large enough caliber, maybe a broken bone, if it's in the right place?

Before you guys start taking out your 50 cal sniper rifles and shooting each other in the face because you have subdermal graphine armor, you also have to realize that shit's going to block the bullets, but not the force. So yeah, you might not get penetrated by a hot metal object, but you're getting decked in the face at a max of 60,000 psi, and while even graphene could stop a huge amount of that pressure, it's still going to feel like you're getting hit by a two inch truck.

Here's my problem with sub-dermal armour: How is the skin even still alive? How is it getting blood? In that movie, when you show the knife snapping, why aren't his clothes getting cut along with the skin, only to be stopped by the armour? To get blood into the skin (and to allow for sweating and such) there would have to be weak points in the armour. So, sure, he could have it across his chest, but that skin would surely be dying and he could be shot or stabbed elsewhere...

What about the kinetic energy though, a bullet could hit the skin armor and be similar to hitting a bone due to it being inside your body meaning whatever stretch or shake from the armor would be smeared directly against your insides and probably cause internal damage even if the armor wasn’t exactly broke, like using a mace on steel knight armor
@olp3850

Graphene is ridiculously conductive... which makes it perfect for being a subdermal skin layer in a thunderstorm. Sure, electricity will be drawn to you, but the electricity will just conduct THROUGH the graphene instead of your body (as long as there's enough to draw a significant amount of the current) Sort of like how you're told to hide in a car during a thunderstorm. The car might attract lightning - but it just travels through the metal around the car to the ground. Likewise, if you truly had graphene beneath your skin (all of your skin) the lightning would hit your head, travel through the graphene around you, and then come out your toes into the ground, with you unharmed.
@mkr9131
@mkr9131 8 лет назад
Is that also just a theory or could it really be proven? (if anyone would actually have graphene put under their skin)
@EquineEquinox
@EquineEquinox 8 лет назад
Not proven, persay, but the principles are scientifically proven. In reality you'd need to test and make sure the graphene was think enough to carry the massive current of a lightning bolt enough that your body would go unharmed. If it was too thin, you'd still be toast.
@mkr9131
@mkr9131 8 лет назад
Would it be possible to have it thick enough to carry the current or would it be too thick to even have under skin?
@qaaris4280
@qaaris4280 8 лет назад
That actually wouldn't happen. Sure it's highly conductive, but it's hot. *VERY **_VERY_** HOT.* You would die, not from the shock, but from the temperature of the air surrounding the bolt.

@bringbackcaramel2302

Well... No. Titanium is, while very light, is still too heavy, and also, while stronger than ordinary steel, its not really strong enough
@Alex-jb8wr
@Alex-jb8wr 8 лет назад
GlaciusTS To be honest, I thought John Smith had liquid silicon armor. It's a liquid armor with slightly charged silicon dissolved in it. Upon any kinetic impact would result in the charged silicon to displace a little and attract each other to the point of the impact creating a bullet proof wall. Being implemented in light clothes like business suits.

So, if I'm marketing Hitman, you can bet I would be targeting my ads against any video with "Hitman" in the title. Probably the Bourne movies too and other action/spy-related terms. OR take another example -- if I'm Nintendo and promoting Mario Maker, I'm going to ensure my ads are being run against all videos relating to Mario, Zelda, Splatoon, etc.!

+Dudebro Gaming That would only happen if the armor was under just the dead skin cells that are currently on the surface. I assume this armor would be behind the living, regenerating layer, which means that new skin should still grow on the outside of the armor. He would need openings for blood flow and such to get to the living cells on the outside of the armor for that to work, though, or it would just die off..

Sadly, as he is wearing it under his skin the bullet would still hit the skin, ripping through it until it reached the graphene armor. It would be immensely better and more protective to wear it like a morph suit, you (assumably) wouldn't need eye holes as it is so thin and I'm guessing it is breathable because of its thickness. Because of the way it stops bullets you would probably still get bruised but you would (almost definitely but not certainly) not die. This isn't a recent video so idk who will see this but I am hoping someone does.

@Jake Render, it's too thin to see, so if I put it on you would see right through it. Someone stealing it is a small matter that isn't a big issue as long as you can find a way to protect it when it's not being worn. You could wear a suit underneath the graphene for insulation, or even some rubber underneath it to protect from any electrical shocks from its super-conductive properties.

Even if it was bullet proof, he would still be seriously injured. The material would need to spread the force of the bullet impact over a very large area in order for him to not have internal bleeding/bones breaking. If you get shot in the chest by a shotgun using buckshot and you are wearing some serious Kevlar, you are still going to have some insane bruises. If he were to get shot in the head, the force could probably indent his skull and kill him. Just because the material is bullet proof doesn't mean that you are not taking the full force of the bullet.
@Chaotixs11
@Chaotixs11 8 лет назад
+Daniel Havlat The tests on graphene that the video mentions says that graphene spreads out the force of bullets to stop them. So as far as your "the material would need to spread the force of the bullet impact..." line goes, it does do exactly that.
@danielhavlat6461
@danielhavlat6461 8 лет назад
+LegendofSleek Yes, but on what scale? If the spread is minimal it can mess you up pretty good, especially with higher caliber or heavier bullets. Nearly everything spreads the impact of a bullet, while some do it vastly better than others.
@briansouthparkstudio1357

+Daniel Havlat it does i think it spreads the energy over the whole outer layer of his body
@paultubbs2275
@paultubbs2275 8 лет назад
not exactly, shotgun "shot" is a bad example, the energy IS significant, but spread over a large area. Bullets condense the "energy dump" into a smaller area.
@paultubbs2275
@paultubbs2275 8 лет назад
and serious armor, such as bomb disposal types, would straight laugh at buckshot. Like trying to kill someone by angrily throwing skittles at them. Slugs on the other hand, would at least knock them on their ass. Armor being heavy as fuck, and the energy transfer would unbalance them, if not breaking through

Hence the graphene would carry the energy into the body (granted, at a much, MUCH smaller amount) but I would imagine the water in your cells would still carry the energy over and, with enough bullets or with big enough bullets (say, going from .45 ACP rounds in Agent 47's Silverballers to a .308 round rifle round)m I'd imagine internal organ rupturing would still be possible. Plus, the graphene bends. Meaning it would still be pushed into your body from the bullet impact which I'd imagine would be horrifically painful. Anyone smart know if that's correct or if I'm just talking out of my ass? :P

Kevlar is only fine woven threads, made to catch bullets, its made into sheets and layered together, Kevlar is only good at stopping 9mm you need a plate system under Kevlar to stop higher rounds.

Actually... wearing such an armor in a thunder storm would be usefull. Covering your whole body it would create a faraday cage, protecting your inner organs from the shock. Sur4e your skin would be burned to a crisp, but that would be less fatal, than your nervous system being fried.

but isnt your skin touching your muscles? if you had the carbon stuff that was touching your skin AND your muscles, and you were struck by lightning, your muscles would be fried with your skin and because your body is 70% water and the electricity would jump from one vital organ to the other in seconds and i sound like matpat.
@eli6797
@eli6797 7 лет назад
yeah just because its bulletproof doesn't mean it stops electrify flowing through your body. if anything it helps the electricity flow through your body
@youliahadzhidimova5260
@youliahadzhidimova5260 7 лет назад
Trash Nasty No, no it doesn't help electricity flow through your body. It's far easier for electricity to flow through metal than through your body, so that's what it does. A suit of metal (or any conducting material) saves your body by offering electricity an easier path with less resistance. The lightning will go AROUND your body. The suit will get really hot from the passing electricity, though, and will burn you. Possibly, fatally so. That's still a better chance of survival than you get from electrocution.
@ryann1669
@ryann1669 8 лет назад
This may have been said already, but you would actually want it in a lighting storm. it would conduct the electricity around your body and not, say, through your heart which would kill you. :P
@Jerickjv
@Jerickjv 8 лет назад
+Ryan Novack Indeed, it would act as a Faraday cage. Since electrical charges repel each other they never move into the inside of a conductive container as that would bring them closer to the charge on the other side. Electricity can run along the outside but never pass to the inside. Since this is sub-dermal armour we're talking about this also means you'd be unaffected by tasers and other electrical based stun weapons because the charge never reaches your muscles and so they never seize up. Lightning strikes passing through a person can cause nasty burns as the electricity is converted to other energy types when forced through an inefficient conductor. But with graphene sub-dermal armour much less of the strike would be converted to heat and it's possible you could walk away reliably from such strikes without so much as a burn or a single muscle spasm.
@RomulessI
@RomulessI 8 лет назад
+Jerickjv And then you have a heart attack and they can't bring you back because of the armor. Boom! Irony.
@TheQuietTyper
@TheQuietTyper 8 лет назад
+RomulessI And if you survived the heart attack, they wouldn't be able to operate to give you a pace maker or even check up on your heart (because I doubt MRIs, Xrays, or even ultrasound would get past the graphene). The armor that keeps knives and bullets away from your heart will also keep the scalpel from doing much more than scratching the skin unless the seams are in the right place, but let's face it, if there are seams, they would be nowhere near the heart or any vital.

+MISTAKEWASMADE4live I don't think so. I haven't done any calculations, so if you have some to back up your statement your might be right, but the resistance of graphene is much lower than the resistance of your body. Obviously it probably wouldn't be a walk in the park, but at WORST there would be less heat generated than if you were struck without the graphene. likely there would be very little heat generated in the graphene itself. I would expect there to mainly be heat at the entry point of the strike and the exit point. If you were standing on the ground and conducting to ground in that way and the lightning struck your head, the skin would be singed on your head between the outer layer of skin and the graphine, the electricity would zip down the graphine to your foot with little resistance, then exit your foot and there would be singing between the graphine and the outer layer of your skin where it exits. All in all a much less traumatic experience than without graphene.
@Jerickjv
@Jerickjv 8 лет назад
+Ryan Novack Surviving a lightning strike? With your nice subdermal faraday cage you'll probably be fine except for one major detail that I just thought of; the properties that make something a good conductor of electricity also make something a good conductor of heat. Turns out graphene might be the best thermal conductor on the planet. This means if the lightning strike delivered enough heat at any point on your body to burn you that heat would very quickly be spread evenly across the underside of your skin. Additional possible downsides include the fact that clothes are useless (at least thermally speaking). Clothes help keep your chest warm, your chest is where most of the body heat is generated and has the lowest tolerance for cold. With sub dermal graphene heat would bleed from your extremties as normal but would instantly(or at least fast enough to feel instant) be replaced by heat from somewhere else on your skin. You will always be as cold as the coldest part of your body. But don't worry the next bit should make the coldest part of your quite warm; Any heat from anything be it a blow torch, a cigerate or a warm meal that touches your skin will rapidly be evenly distributed across it. For small heat sources that if was otherwise concentrated into a single point would be harmful, this is beneficial for everything else it is bad. Sticking your hand into a fire could give you third degree burns all over your body. Sensing temperate at all could be become tricky and surprisingly temperature is actually a big part in being able to tell if your actually touching something or not.

It might stop the bullet going through, but the impact energy would still go through, just like it does with Kevlar vests. Unlike in the movies, even if the bullet gets stopped by the armor, you are still likely to end up hurt. So John Smith might not get perforated, but he'd likely have organ damage and broken ribs. Good luck fixing that if the surgeons can't cut through the graphine armor.
@DrMartinArcher

Graphene is fantastic at distributing energy out across its surface, as I discuss in the latest video on my channel. For that reason it probably wouldn't hurt as much as you might think.

The kinetic energy in bullets isn't actually that much. It's only because the bullet's small that it goes in. A bullet has about the same energy as a dude jogging at you.
@Atlazuko

That's true for small arm's fire but not so much for heavier arms fire. it's one of the reasons you need a higher grade vest to stop it like a dragon skin body armor vest with the ballistic steel or ceramic plates.

Thane36425 Could you use a non Newtonian fluid to oppose blunt force? If you increase force of bullet, the viscosity (ability to resist change) increases.
@MannyBrum
@MannyBrum 7 лет назад
Also the bullets would still puncture the skin, so he'd be bleeding all over anyway. Luke Cage doesn't bleed because his skin is bulletproof, but if the bulletproof layer is under the skin, the skin is going to be damaged by the bullets.

Did some research... one gram of graphene costs about $100 to make. If one layer that covers an entire foot ball field weighs (to keep it simple because I know you said less than) one gram, since the average skin area is about 22 square feet and a football field is about 57,600 square feet, you could wear over 2,618 layers under every inch of your skin for the price of 100 dollars. All the other costs for the implanting for would pricey to say the least but, that sounds like a bargain to be able to stop a tank round. Of course that would still liquify your organs and bones but hey, it wont go through. Edit: you could wear it over you skin, like woven into clothing which would make the cost at most $300 and you wont have to undergo surgery.
