Dude. Lol. I found a channel on here that’s dedicated to P&F and Milo Murphy’s Law, which I’m caught up on as well. How can you not know about this movie? I knew about it days after it came out and watched it. But, the 10 years later episode of P&F will still be my favorite...still. A huge fan of both shows.

I love how Mat doesn't use any "This is common knowledge" explanations and discusses everything at full length since I'm pretty sure we all know what photosynthesis is and what air is made up of if we paid attention to middle to high school science. Fun fact: Dan Povenmire, the show's creator, has confirmed that the brothers got their funding in the first episode. When the rollercoaster is almost done, Phineas looks at Ferb and said: "We should've charged more". 1:26 I actually learned about this a few days ago. So apparently we breathe in what was once considered to be a waste product. Way back when life was first starting, the Earths atmosphere was mainly composed of carbon dioxide. As a result, organisms consumed carbon dioxide and released oxygen as a waste product. However, due to cyanobacteria, large amounts of oxygen began to accumulate in the atmosphere until the Earth’s atmosphere became dominated by oxygen instead of carbon dioxide. This was known as the Great Oxidation Event. As a result, organisms started consuming oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide. We literally breathe in what was considered poison by our ancestors.

One thing you’re missing Matpat on how plants use nitrogen is that nitrogen in the atmosphere is in the wrong form for them to use. Nitrogen has to be combined or “fixed” with oxygen as NO2 (s) or form NH3/NH4 to be usable.

Something to add to this is that it's actually feasible (and something that already exists/is in the works) for some hypothetical plant to take nitrogen directly from the atmosphere. Genetically engineering plants like that is being looked into for the sake of agriculture so that the industry doesn't have to rely so much on nitrogen rich fertilizers that are oftentimes damaging to the environment.

Maybe it is different: Here’s a quote: „I think in your language it’s called CO2.“ That could be wrong, as she meant Nitrogen, but didn’t know the right words. Candeces work could make her breathe out the Nitrogen left in her body, resulting in Mama getting the right element. Of course, that is way less than nessecary, but then again, they were desperate and just had to use what they were given.

@@LaptapGamer Well, we do breath out all the nitrogen we breath in. With 78% nitrogen in the atmosphere, it's kind of difficult not not, but we also urinate nitrogen. Urea nitrogen to be specific, which is a waste product from breaking down our food. I'm not sure if it's the same nitrogen that causes the bends after scuba diving, but humans do carry a lot of nitrogen on them. In fact, they probably could have gotten a lot of nitrogen if they just gave her plenty of food and water and waited a bit.

@@TheQuietTyper But they were only having her exercise. They were not using her urine, they were specifically using the air she exhaled, hence the big tube thing. The theory just does not make sense.

@@LaptapGamer I'm saying it's not entirely incorrect that we breath out nitrogen, our bodies just don't absorb nitrogen from the atmosphere. All the nitrogen in our bodies comes out through urine, so if they really wanted nitrogen, human urine is an excellent source and can at times be used for fertilizer.

You know, I never once saw Phineas and Ferb in my life, but I do see you and your theories and I gotta say, your blatant enthusiasm and love for this series is pretty damned adorable. Real dad energy, I'd say but I know for a fact that you'd watch the show even without being a dad haha just because you're so open minded and value childlike wonder. Suffice it to say seeing you like it has slowly convinced me to watch the movie at the very least. "Hey, if Mat likes it so much maybe I will too." I think that at the end of the day, this is what creators strive to ultimately do. Inspire. And well, you did. Fantastic job!

It's a common misconception that oxygen is useless to the plants, it's just that they are producing much more than they need, so they release the surplus. Plant cells also have mitochondria and they also burn sugar to produce energy.

Nice chemical equations but they omit one part Energy Making glucose/sugar takes energy that's why it's a storage of energy and why plants require light to create it (energy source) Nitrogen is unreactive because it takes so much energy to use it to make anything (you have to store a lot of energy in it, that's why fertilizer can be used to make bombs) So from where pray tell is she going to get the energy to use nitrogen?

It should be noted that most plants do require oxygen. They engage in cellular respiration to break down glucose just like animals. There are some cyanobacteria that don't need it though.

"Useless" is a strong and somewhat inaccurate word, especially when MatPat did mention the Krebs Cycle earlier in the video. But to be fair, cellular respiration in plants is kind of a mind-blowing concept because it never really gets acknowledged outside of biology classes. I saw a video on the King of Random channel where they put plants in different environments, one of which was high in CO2 and low in O2 (the plant wilted and died). One commenter spent a week arguing with anybody who mentioned cellular respiration. They refused to believe that plants followed one process for storing solar energy and another one for actually using it.

This is what I’m learning about right now in biology. Nitrogen is needed in adenine triphosphate, which is the energy chloroplasts use when preforming photosynthesis. And what the mushrooms (and humans do) is called cellular respiration
