14:49 I disagree, part of what makes this movie especially relatable to me is precisely due to how irrational racist people are. They don't need or have a complex reason to dislike you; they simply do. Ip Man 1-4 all show the realities for Chinese people at the time. Ip Man 1 was about Japanese invasion, 2 was about HK as a British colony, 3 (you got me here the plot made no sense), and this one is about the lived experiences for many Chinese immigrants in the West. These villains don't need a complex backstory; for every Chinese person these villains represent real life issues that they have faced and continue to face. That is what makes these movies so relatable and touching for so many of us.

yeah, that's it, the American even had back in the day. That's kind of putting racism in the laws. and i remember there was "Asian hatred" spreading in USA in 2020 ----- things like a black dude hitting a 80-year old Chinese woman with no reason and so on. So the rasist problem can be big conflict at that time.

I find it interesting how American viewers only took issue with Ip Man 4. Ip Man 1 portrayed the Japanese as much more despicable and Ip Man 2 also had an over-the-top British colonialist villain. But if we look at Ip Man 4, they actually show that prejudice comes from everyone, with the Chinese association discriminating against Western students. Also, this is 60s America, not a good time to be Chinese in America with all the rhetoric about Communist China and Russia. I mean, just look at what happened after Covid lol. East Asians quickly became the punching bag of society again.

It amazes me to see how people live in a bubble, racism is something very real and Asian people live it and these movies show that perspective. And that happened at different times and even today. It is interesting to see that when you are not used to seeing beyond what is happening in your own country. The American people who arenot actually Americans because America is a whole continent. Only then does it show that they are used to the classic Arab, Russian, Chinese, Afro-descendant or Latino villains. And they get uncomfortable when they see other real perspectives that other people live within the USA

You guys should def check out Master Z... in terms of story, I put it on the top 3. The order I rank them are: 1 > 3 > Master Z > ( 2=4 ) I put Ip Man 3 high on my list because I find interesting how Ip Man can solve most of his conflicts through fighting so the story gives him an enemy/conflict he can't fight against(i.e. his wife's cancer). Also, the Traditional Wingchun vs Freestyle Wingchun fight is my favorite fight from this franchise.

I think this movie is the most relatable to me because I’m Chinese Native American and I also do Kung Fu especially Wing Chun, because I also have experienced so much racism and hatred against my race and my fighting style, even though it’s almost 2024 it still happens. I hope we can have more movies similar to this to change other people’s perspective on Chinese culture and even hopefully make people respect any culture.

Some martial artist in that era hate to teach anyone non-chinese martial arts, is because the origin was Kung Fu/WuShu but not martial art, which in Chinese is stand for "the technique to stop violence", there are philosophies, moral, and culture build into the system, and stopping violence should be the only reason why Wushu is learnt, foreinger in the past invaded our countries, which even I was talked by parents that they are violent when savages I was a kid, I hope this is not true but in fact all they curious when particing martial art is the technique of movement physically but never the philosophies and the moral. By the way it's the second son of Ip Man in this movie, the one in previous movies is his first son.

IP Man 4 is portraying America back in the 90s, which is definitely a period where there are tons of racism against people of color. Bruce Lee's movies also did quite a bit on racism topics too. I would imagine the open racism in the movie is not that far off from the reality at that time period. As for why most white dudes seem like bad actors in Ip Man movies probably has something to do with availability of white actors in Hong Kong. It is probably also why Western movies have very awkward Asian actors too. Asians can barely recognize a lot of the side Asian characters in American movies because most of them probably do not even resemble modern Asians from Asian countries.

Sadly the movies did get weaker with time, Donnie Yen actually didn't really want to continue with more Ip Man movies, that's partially the reasson why the fourth one took four years to come up. But I do hope you don't give up on Donnie Yen movies, he has A LOT of them, and most are really good, and of course the fights never disapoint (actually, there are other movies with better fights, since he doesn't limit himself to a single fighting style). If I were to recomend a few more Donnie Yen movies it would be: -Enter the fat dragon [2020] Comedy and action, Donnie is such a good comedic actor and it has really, really good fights. You can watch it in its own, but it could also take you down on a quick trip of other martial arts movies. The original was "Way of the Dragon [1972]", a Bruce Lee movie where he is a young country boy who arrives at the city and gets involved in some gangster problems. Then, Sammo Hung (the actor that did the fat master in Ip man 2) did a parody called "Enter the fat dragon [1978]" It's about a young martial artists who wants to follow Bruce Lee steps, but is ridiculed for being fat, he travels to the city and also faces some thugs. And finally, Donnie Yen made his "remake", in his movie he is a detective that is too wild, so he has to get his position back by solving a case, he gets fat at the beggining because of an incident. -Wuxia / Dragon [2011] Police mistery in the old times, very good action and suspense, also the actor that does the general in the first movie is the co-protagonist, but I do recomend not watching the trailer or reading the summary because they spoil the answer to the whole investigation. -Iron Monkey [1993] Action and comedy once more, the story of a masked martial artist that kind of robin hoodes around and another martial artist that people mistakenly believe is him. -Special ID [2013] A police man has spent years undercover as a thug and wants a final mission to finally be promoted to an actual officer, lots of action, I particullary love the fights in this one because they are a little more street style, the character is not such a powerful master as Donnie Yen in real life. I could go on and on, but of course don't want to overwhelm you ever more that I most likely already did with such a long comment lol Anyway, thank you for reacting to this and having such an open mind an honest opinions, I hope you enjoy your trip through chinese movies, whichever you decide to watch :)

The Ip Man movies you have to take with a grain of salt as far as factual matters and just enjoy the show. This movie though is especially inaccurate with a few important details that were plainly wrong:- Yip Man never travelled to the USA, is the big one. Yip Man was actually very prejudiced against teaching westerners - he was the one who was angry that Bruce was teaching non Chinese. From his time teaching in Hong Kong in the 1950's to his death in 1972, he never taught any foreign students. Bruce Lee famously did NOT attend Yip Man's funeral. There is a famous cartoon that appeared in a Hong Kong newspaper that mocks Bruce missing the funeral because he's rolling in his cash from the movies. Bruce would later blame the senior students for not telling him the correct day of the funeral. To be fair Bruce did attend the memorial service at the Ving Tsun Athletic Association two weeks later which may be what the movie is showing....
