Well they completely ruined history in the Pacific War on December 6th, 1941, before Sunday Morning December 7th to attack Pearl Harbor. The one they wiped out single two enemy Japanese Planes and saved boat survivors' life.

Joseph Zielinski According to the novelization it follows the basic rules of time travel- they couldn’t change anything. The Nimitz was always meant to go back for just those few hours. Owens explains it to Lasky in the limousine at the end.
@@maxfrankow1238 My point is, without a real movie Tora Tora Tora exist, they cannot stop those Japanese planes and save Pearl Harbor to undo the past in this event of World War II. Because after during last hours remaining, USS Nimitz been transported back into future by a time vortex twice, so the old Pacific Fleet is gone. Now they gotta do the rest of the thing with Soviets in this Cold War instead.

Mike, I was on the El Paso lka-117 at the time. I ate on the Nimitz one day an dour CO did a cameo as an admiral coming a board. We were in the Nimitz battles group during the med/IO cruise of 80/81.
Just watched it again for the 3rd time. I would have loved to have been in that car at the end for the chat between Mr Tideman and Laurel Scott. A number two would have been great and we really could make this into a modern day film... the possibilities are endless now with the effects we could produce. But you can't take away the amazing portal scene they absolutely nailed it with those scenes!
Greatest blue ball scene in movie history. What I would've given to see an alternate ending where the Nimitz's air wing lays into the Japanese fleet, goes on to help the US beat Japan and Germany, and then, just for good measure, uses some of her nukes to take out Stalin and wipe out communism before the Cold War even gets started. Great movie, but damn that pissed me off.
I remember having the same feeling, then thinking how COULD they have ended it? It would have to end with just the Nimitz sailing into Pearl after destroying the Japanese fleet, no conjecture about the future, then cut to the Japanese surrendering on the deck of the Nimitz.

I believe Kirk Douglas is the oldest living actor who was in a movie with John Wayne, my absolute favorite actor and personal hero. They were in a total of 3 movies together, one right after the other in 3 years in a row. They were In Harm's Way in 1965, Cast A Giant Shadow in 1966, and The War Wagon in 1967. For me those movies are ranked from most to least favorite: The War Wagon, In Harm’s Way, and Cast A Giant Shadow. I especially rank Cast A Giant Shadow last because as far as I know John Wayne is only a high co-star and is not in the main starring role. I do not know for sure as I have not seen the movie but I have trouble watching any movie with John Wayne and he is not thee absolute main character. After these 3 my favorite movies with Kirk Douglas would be the following 3 as they do not star John Wayne. They are ranked from most to least favorite: The Big Trees, The Final Countdown, and The Way West. Although The Way West is a Western, my absolute favorite movie genre, it is last of the 3 as the character played by Kirk Douglas, United States Senator William Tadlock, is killed near the end of the movie and when the character played by my favorite performer in movie dies it is very hard for me to watch it. The aircraft carrier entering Pearl Harbor at 2:03 is the USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63), as at the time the Nimitz was at the Atlantic Fleet and not in the Pacific Fleet yet.
Dad served aboard USS Antietam in the Atlantic back in the 60s. He often told me of his days on the 1st angled deck aircraft carrier. I am proud to tell EVERYONE my Dad is a Flattop Sailor.
I was on the El Paso in '80 and ate lunch on Nimitz one day. Our CO played one of the admirals coming aboard at the end. I love "carrier" and have corresponded with Christian Garzon several times.

Did a med cruise, carrier quals, Arctic circle, North Africa, Europe, England, repairs,launches,helped the wounded,cleared the flight deck of the wreckage of an off center arrested landing. Yup I spent some time on the good ship Nimitz.

The time vortex appears on its own and drew the ship in returning them to their present time,they had no choice, because perhaps History is not to be altered or messed with.
Wouldn't this be cool if this was set in the same universe as The Philadelphia Effect? The chrono-vortex that displaced The USS Nimitz could have been caused by the generators on the USS Eldridge. That incident could have been the reason to restart the experiment 4 years later, which was necessary for events to unfold to complete the time-loop.
Great movie. Loved it for ages. Phenomenal music. I always sob during the vintage footage of the actual attack. Brilliant music and effects let the audience feel the agony of being ripped out of an era and thrust into another. I wonder if I would have been able to refrain from attacking the enemy pilots as they approached Pearl. Holy cow.......I don't know.
This reminds me of an old Twilite Zone episode where a sherman tank crew time warp just ot before Custer'a massacure, excepty to fight along side Cor. Custer, except their tank breaks down just before the battle, though their names do appear on a headstone at the momument.
As much I do not like reboots, I think this one would be cool if they could get Michael Douglas and either Charlie Sheen or Emilio Estevez to assume their father's respective roles.
They should have shown the briefing.They recorded all transmissions; they had aerial photographs; observations of the pilots; the dead Japanese pilot and his belongings. I'd like to know how the admirals all reacted.
You know....imagine out of all those planes....one or two didn't make it back into the time portal and were aimlessly wandering the pacific till they ran out of fuel.

Squids - I really love that weird music, kinda sad. It also plays just before cmdr Owen gets on the helicopter - the last time sheen sees him young. If you subscribe to the theory of multi-dimensional time, they would not have returned to the same time dimension they originally left since they had changed history in a number of ways. Imagine the ramifications had they annilated the Japanese strike force probably including the fleet as well!
the usa would have advanced 50 years in technology over the course of a year, making everything we know now completely different. the nuclear reactor would have brought in a safe form of nuclear energy and maybe Chernobyl would not have happened with that information. heck the war would have been much shorter and europe would not have been devistated, so they may have stayed as major super powers

Eventually they left Commander Owens and Laurel behind, even her dog Charlie to live, as long as they'll survived spans 40 years yet to come to reunite Lasky with Charlie again.

They were transported back in time exact a day before the Japanese air force started to attack the US naval base on Pearl Harbour in Hawaii on the 6th December 1941. But without any chance to alter the history, they were caugh up from the same nature phenomenon and transported back in the year 1979.

That stupid story, it isn't fair, why would that time vortex out of cloudy storm swallowed up the aircraft carrier travels through time to the World War II? Lousy ending whole point of the movie they just go back. They need to make a movie where they actually engage the enemy like going back in time to the Alamo or some other great battles

They hadn't take Senator Chapman back to Pearl Harbor, not to mention Laurel, after he armed the the flare gun then died in a chopper. And they been realized it's time to back to 1980 this present after during last 24 hours in a time travel.
