Not going to lie watching this is more painful then ever. For people who don't know recently Reno's Japanese voice actor Keiji Fujiwara pass away from cancer. May he rest in peace.
Ah no that's a shame, Reno would have been in the sequal as well - at least in the original game the Turks were around right up until the destruction of midgar
The original game Reno was always more of a threat. I really don't understand how anyone, especially Nomura during movie production, got the idea that he was somehow this wild rambunctious kid that could barely fight. He fights your party plenty of times. And he always carried that air of someone laid back and chill, but a person you absolutely wouldn't want to fuck with because he would not hesitate to kill you dead the moment he felt so inclined or was ordered. I mean he's a Turk after all, and the whole draw about them was that they were Shinra's black-ops agents and professional killers. Not to mention this is the deadliest Turk we saw when we played the original game in fact, because this was the guy that dropped the sector 7 plate (not to mention murdered Corneo in cold blood for daring to capture a Turk and annoy him on his vacation). Glad to see at least the remake is doing a good job of capturing that air of serious danger and threat about them. They were always supposed to be those guys that appeared "cool" (sharp suits, snappy tune, shades, etc.) not like complete idiots, Elena aside. At least Reno's back to being a laid back but sarcastic, savage killer rather than a buttmonkey.
@@fuckgoogle4405 You should get more likes. Not to mention, I think a lot of people don't remember, or don't even realize that Reno is the 2nd-in-command just below Tseng in Turks, if that alone doesn't tell you that he has more than beyond the slack-off, playboy-ish appearance, then you need to look harder. Unfortunately due to AC's popularity, a lot of people just think of him as this goofy character instead :/
@@magicalgirl4 a lot of people actually haven't played it but say they have so I'm not surprised, but yea it is a old ass game so probably they forgot a few things 😂
He put up an extremely good fight he just got his ass kicked because of his arrogance later on he does much better against both Cloud, Tifa and Barret together.
Geek freak114 I didn’t either, but I understood that they wanted some kind of comic relief but I personally didn’t think Reno should have been the guy for it.
Fresh Beginnings I think in the original he definitely seemed more relaxed but could be a smart ass when he felt like it, like when he walked on the flowers but then told the troops not too. I liked him in AC don’t get me wrong. I think the remake has done a great job with his character, maybe in the next part while he’s on vacation we can see a different side of him.
@Georgia Andrea If that's true, then doesn't that mean that Aerith (or Tifa) are going to stop Cloud from trying to kill the Turks the next time they meet (whether it's where they fought them in the original game or new boss battle like they did with Reno and Rude)? Cloud made it very clear (in the remake) that has no issue cutting people down (if they'll cause trouble) and wanted to get rid of the Turks by trying to kill them on multiple occasions, only to be stopped by Aerith or the Whispers protecting them. Considering the fact the Whispers are gone now, along with Cloud have more reason to get rid of anyone related to the Turks thanks to the Sector 7 plate drop, I don't think Cloud is willing to let them go the next time they meet unless someone stops him.
@@shadowsaber4566 Yet in the OG they never killed each other even though they met and fought quite a few times. They just have a weird relationship, just like what Reno said last time they met in Midgar.
@Georgia Andrea You got a good point. Looking back on it, it's actually is kind of weird that neither side tried to kill the other. Sure, they ended up being sort-of allies in the end, but there wasn't any indication of them being like that before that. Along with the fact that (unless I missed it) anyone of Cloud's group didn't show disdain or anger towards Reno (he pressed the button in the original) next time they met him (or towards the Turks) outside of Midgar.
Lots of people are talking about how they didn't make Reno into a joke character and comic relief. I think it's better this way too, but you can tell that they also kept a little bit of sass and sarcasm that he has, like when he calls Rude when he was about to fight Cloud
I’m sad to hear about the Japanese VA, Keiji Fujiwara, passing away. :( That said, credit where credit is due-I think the English VA chosen for Reno is pretty great. Delivery is spot-on if you ask me. You also really get a sense of danger from this guy, which makes the scene and fight all the more compelling.
Yeah, there are VERY few SOLDIER 1C's, and all of them are well-known. (Sephiroth, Angeal, Zack etc.) On the other hand, Reno admitted as much that Cloud seemed to give off the right vibe, with a "weird personality" and the Mako eyes, so it's just possible by the end of the fight Reno genuinely thought, "Woah... Maybe he WAS telling the truth and there was another cadre of First Class SOLDIERS I wasn't aware of."
@@Zaxares nah, Reno's still snarky about it in the helicopter scene, lol - "First class", quote on quote. He's a Turk, so I am going to assume he knows more about how to identify SOLDIERS. Because he wasn't wrong.
If anyone would have known the SOLDIERs it would have been the turks who directly worked with them especially Tseng, Reno believed he was SOLDIER but definitely not first he should have called him out on it more
@@Zaxares At least in the original continuity, there were a lot more first classes, as shown in the random encounters against them later in the game (we'll have to see if that gets changed in this version, though). There's a small number of them, but it's not in the single digits like the named important ones. Reno's disbelief was more likely because first classes ARE still very rare, and finding a random person inside a random place claiming to having formerly been one immediately seems unbelievable, especially given how claiming to be an ex-SOLDIER seems like the type of thing mercenaries and bodyguards might lie on their resume about to puff themselves up. It'd be like going to a McDonalds and starting a conversation with the guy on the next table over, only for him to tell you that he's on the President's secret service when the discussion turns to jobs. It's technically possible, but so unlikely that nearly everyone would call bullshit.
Reno kept kicking my ass because I hadn't figured out how to use Punisher mode yet. I beat some of the tougher bosses like Hell House, Tonberry, Jenova and Rufus in one go but Reno truly humiliated me.
@@vroomy619 she's like that in the original game too, it just doesn't come through without voice acting and facial expressions (and the bad translation doesn't help).
They got the wrong voice lines for Reno. Instead of "Yoohoo, bodyguard!" and "I won't bite!" he should've said "It's no use!" " _TAAAKE THIS!_ " "It's no use!" " _TAAAKE THIS!_ " "This will end it!"
Reno must be one of the HOTTEST video game character ever. I love how the animators can perfectly capture the naughty, dangerous spark in his eyes. He's a balance of dangerous, cocky, sexy. Hell most young women will find bad boys like him attractive. I'm not young anymore but I'm still attracted..hahahah
Reno: Oh, don't step on the flowers. Shinra Guard 1: YOU JUST STEPPED ON THEM YOURSELF! Shinra Guard 2: Now they're ruined... Shinra Guard 3: You're gonna catch holy hell!
They did my boy Reno so good! btw he has a super attack where if you get caught in 5 of his orbs it goes to a quick cinematic attack where he plunges his baton into the ground and the orbs all detonate around you like a mini nuke!
I can say that Ian has one of the most beautiful fighting styles in the game. And with his speed and deft attacks he becomes a really dangerous opponent
the sarcastic way reno says his "SOLDIER boy...."-line makes the audience assume he indeed does know about the fact that cloud was nothing but the catatonic backpack of the 1st class-target that the turks lost in the midgar desert just a few ingame-weeks ago. this game-lore definitely has it's plot holes, but after all it is a masterpiece ❤️
I won't lie, this fight had me so hyped! I've waited so long for one of these, my first mano y mano encounter with ANY final fantasy boss character outside of the Kingdom Hearts genre that I started up over 15 years ago (Yes this was my first ff game). A bad-ah who straight up challenged our main protagonist, everything was just so perfect. The timing, the music, the cutscenes! I would've wanted to play it again if it hadn't been what I think was my first death in the game. Even after dying I was given the surprise of the game over theme I've heard somewhere online before, but had no idea what game it was from!
To those having trouble with Reno, first and foremost, don’t approach these fights as if it were DMC. Punish mode + counter is your best friend in the fights with the humanoid bosses. Use triple slash when he releases the electric spheres. Also keep your eyes on your health. I feel like most people are too caught up in the action that they forget.
Also equipping fire materia linked with the elemental enhancer materia on your sword makes quick work of the shinra guards before the one on one fight.
Am I the only one who finds the face he makes at 0:46 terrifying? Also that "GOTCHA NOW!!!" jumpscare during the helicopter scene...Remake Reno is a perfect combination of funny and scary.
@@claudevalentine8657 (I know, this is old as hell) I'm not sure where you heard that, because they definitely make it clear that Cloud has zero clue who Johnny is, and Johnny doesn't recognise him either.
Seriously this shit made me quit the game. and Ive beaten all the souls games like 10 times each. This is the most BS boss fight of any game I've played.
This boss is a major game killer. It's the boss that like 90% of people quit the game on. Every godamn final fantasy has one. Try playing FF8 you'll just cry and throw out the game.
@@noyoucantnoicantnowecantsostop watch Advent Children, play FF7 and save Elena from Corneo... He is not evil, he's just doing his job, anything that isn't recorded by his job, he becomes a different person, and once the Turks are gone for Advent Children, he is a different person. He has no grudge against Cloud, even helps him, even helps him more than once in the original game.
I'm glad Reno wasn't like his AC counterpart, I loved him in that movie, but he's wayyyy better in this game, he's one of my favorite characters. I'm a little gay for him ngl
"Bodyguard work's not too different from merc stuff right?" "Huh?" "Uh... I guessed! From the sword!" This exchange makes it so obvious that Aerith has already lived out the first timeline of FF7 in the Remake.
this is definitely meant to confuse people. the thing is, she might just know because hes so similar to zack. if you play canonically, cloud uses only the buster sword (check the prerendered cutscenes towards the end) and aerith would almost definitely connect him to zack
He doesn't have those fighting abilities/powers because after the whole lifestream stopping meteor and all that their infrastructure was messed up and nobody was going to go back to draining the planet to make materia. No materia means no super cool abilities. It's only because Cloud had some stockpiled in a case after defeating Sephiroth that the bad guys were able to steal them and use them to give themselves badass fighting powers. So Reno could only use his normal human fighting abilities and explosives in the movie.
Ikr especially rude, playing the original I always envisioned him as a quiet surly badass who takes his job seriously and to a T but in the movie him and Reno are comic reliefs 🙄
I didn't see Reno and Rude as comic reliefs in AC. I saw them as two guys trying to build themselves and the company up after feeling like they screwed it all up and let others down. In the book before AC they also wanted people to see them in a better light since they need people to trust the shinra company again and they did have regrets. They also didn't have materia so their fighting wasn't going to be as strong in AC. In my opinion a character can be a badass and still occasionally be comedic and it just adds layers to the character since they had to change a bit because of circumstances, I wouldn't say they butchered his character. Reno is one of my favorites, I very much like Remake Reno, he's super cool and super sexy. 👍
Me fighting Reno: "Hah! Don't think I forgot. I played the original, I know your weakness is FIRE!" *uses Fire* *doesn't work* Me: *surprised Pikachu face*
Reno is a lot like Fifteen from Katana ZERO. Both wear a suit, have a long ponytail, fight with melee weapons, and can move from one place to another in the blink of an eye.
Why wasn't Reno this powerful in Advent Children? I know he was just the comic relief of the movie, but come on he could have beaten Loz and Yazoo easily
Is no one gonna talk about how Reno is right? That cloud is bullshitting him for being in 1st class? He’s rights that cloud was never in first class he might not know that cloud was never soldier
Jesus...some of the comments here. How ignorant can people actually get. It’s 2020, things aren’t going to be the same or turn-based anymore. It’s a Remake, not a remaster. They have full creative license to reimagine the entire game from the ground up the way they want to. And it’s bloody epic and stunning the whole way through, an amazing game. Everyone will always have the original, it’s always there. So if the Remake isn’t up your standards, the Original is always there. As for the rest of us, the Remake is amazing. And the combat is the perfect evolution of turn-based combat, if you actually played it, you’d grasp it and understand that.
Am I the only one who likes both this version AND the movie version of him? In the movie it feels like he relaxed his personality after all that happened. Though maybe they should have given him better fighting skills in the movie lol.
This Reno feels like a mix of both. And to be honest the whole game has a mix of the original 97 OC essence with a lot of Advent's Children influence. Probably what Tetsuya wanted.
I love them both too! I remember loving Reno and Rude in the movie and they were my favourite characters. When playing this version of him I also really enjoyed it, they did really well with his character
Yunel I got around to watching ACC a few weeks ago and honestly, I’m on the same boat as you. I completely understand why some fans are really iffy about the film, especially with how the characters are handled. But, yeah. I like both versions of Reno. Here (and probably in the original game. Never played it.), I get a threat from him and he’s suppose to be second in command of the Turks? I personally like the badass, lowkey commanding vibe from Reno in the remake. He’s even more fun and enjoyable to watch. ❤️
@@MariusBoss11458 His sword was used to save the world. (Though it really is extremely sad. Seeing the buster sword in AC breaks my heart, every time.)
I just wanna say, this is my fav boss fight, simply cause it's so funny. Like the whole time he's like "Oh soldier first class eh? REALLY NOW?" as I counter every single one of his moves. It's really unfortunate that all of his melee attacks are counterable because once I found that out I had my whole mr. Incredible "It's show time" moment and proceeded to beat the shit out of him.
Bravo 👏 Excellent performance from the player. Very cinematic. This is my favorite boss fight from the game so far. The music, dialogue, and game feel are just on point.
I've noticed Cloud's more cold-hearted than previous iterations of him. In KH, he is an edgy little joke. Here, he has nearly decapitated Reno and Rude, and both times he was stopped by someone else. The guy didn't even look back.
You know Reno reminds me a lot of Spike Spiegel of cowboy bebop. They just talk really calm and with a sense of playfulness and nothing about their personalities hints at the fact that they are these supremely dangerous killers.
So no one's gonna comment how Reno pointed out he's also Aerith's bodyguard and called her princess? XD Tbh he's pretty different from the movie (looks, skills and character) but I love him in both the Remake and Advent Children
