In the first video in our three-part series, we tell the story of how the 1.0 version of FINAL FANTASY 14 came to be. How FINAL FANTASY 11 inspired its design, the ways in which the game fell short and how Square-Enix and the development team reacted to its failure.
Noclip operates entirely through the funding of its members. To help us tell more stories about video games and the people who make them, please consider becoming a patron: / dannyodwyer

To enable subtitles for Japanese speakers, please change your captions settings use the Settings (Gear) button at the bottom of the screen. Full closed captions are also available. We are aware that some RU-vid platforms (such as AppleTV) do not support CC, but we wanted to ensure the best viewing experience for people of all languages and abilities. For those new to captions on RU-vid, you can also change your text settings (size, color and loads more) using that gear icon. A special thanks to all our patrons who helped fund this project. We simply couldn't have done it without you. Enjoy the show.

To echo Dmitriy's comment, the subtitles provided are often confusing or hard to parse. This video is great, but the subtitles during Yoshida's interview are hard to read.

The subtitles still hard to read, I know it's already a tough job to get the translation right. But it really helps to get someone that knows how to typeset as well.

I'm used to well spaced and timed subtitles. If the are not well paced then it distracts way to much and you are constantly reading long sentences instead of enjoying the show. This got nothing to do with experience.
@Tigreuh

It's not computer generated for sure, but there are typos, weird syntax (you usually only translate to your native language and this reads like a japanese translator's work), the typesetting and pace are sometime ridiculous. It's not hard to fix and it gives the feeling this hasn't been reviewed.

Soken being the guy who hyped up the team in its darkest moment and excitedly pledging his full support to Yoshi-P creates such an incredible context for Yoshida's words at Fanfest 2021. "I'm so glad my best friend is back." Soken was there for him from the very beginning

The fact that they managed to go from catastrophic financial failure, to one of the most popular games in the genre is absolutely astounding. Ofc. he can't take the entire credit, as he still needed all the programmers etc. to do the work, he was definitely the one who facilitated the whole thing, and really is what made it all possible. I love the candidness from Yoshi P. Very few people would dare to talk about their company as having acted arrogantly, especially an employee for a Japanese company. He's pretty dead on too. Square was always known as trailblazers in console graphics, especially post PS1. I recall being speechless seeing pictures of FFX for the first time; I just couldn't believe those where actually real graphics in a video game. And I guess getting that much praise for so many years can eventually go to your collective head. Almost like they needed a big failure to be brought back down to earth, and to realize they weren't miracle makers that could do no wrong.

It's so hard to wrap my mind around just how difficult a pitch that must've been to make and consider. Even now, years after we know it was successful, thinking that Yoshida-san had to talk to corporate and suggest they need to start from scratch and invest yet more time, money and manpower into a failure that might fail again and irreparably damage the Final Fantasy brand forever... That's a damn hard pitch to make.

Azura Moonstar Yep, ff11 difficulty was the intended design because it threw you in a sink or swim situation that required asking for help but people started using guides online & hacks which led to elitism especially with rare gear, inflated prices and VIP groups. That promotion of communication I think was intended in 14 as well. Kind of mimics real life in that if you were friends with the right people, had access to the right secrets, left your morals at the door etc. you got to enjoy everything the game had to offer.

These interviews with Yoshi P really blew me away. I played WoW for many years, and listened to a lot of Ion Hazzikostas talk about that game, and everything he said was always lawyer speak. You can smell the bullshit. With Yoshi P, he speaks so candidly, and you can tell he's a very chill and down to earth guy. I couldn't believe the stuff he said, and it makes me even more glad I recently became a FF14 player myself. Blizzard would never do something like this, rebuilding a game from the ground up after it failed. No way. Square Enix is a lot of things, but you have to give them credit with this, this was amazing. To the devs, thanks. From a brand new player in 2020 you're game is great.
@megamage911
@megamage911 4 года назад
Well, that's actually not entirely true, that thing about Blizzard not wanting to scrap a game and try over. Cuz that's basically how Overwatch happened. It was basically built with the scraps they had leftover from their failed project "Titan". I know it's technically not the exact same concept, but I feel it's still somewhat comparable. Hell, they even managed to salvage Diablo 3 when they put out Reaper of Souls, cuz they owned up to that the real money auction house, along with all they had done to the game to accommodate that, was a mistake, and just completely removed it. But then again, that's probably one of the very last things of actual integrity Blizzard has ever done. It's just been a steady decline downhill ever since...
@JackgarPrime
@JackgarPrime 3 года назад
@@megamage911 Well Overwatch is different. That was one game in development being retooled into something else before it ever was released. That's pretty common in game development. Like there's the story of how the original version of RE4 that was in development actually got scrapped and refitted to create Devil May Cry. The Diablo 3 example is a more relevant one, but still nowhere near the scale of what was done with FFXIV. That was more shifting business models, which has happened a couple times before. Not basically recreating an entirely new game. The closest I can think to what was done here is maybe No Man's Sky? That's obviously not a Blizzard game, but it is maybe the closest comparison as far as taking a live game, overhauling it dramatically, and then releasing it again.

As they already stated in the documentary, different cultures accept statements differently. When Western companies apologises they get shit on. @@TheSilverwing999 That's because westerners don't have Japan's taboo on insincere apologies, and their PR teams weaponize that. If you look closely you'll see that Blizzard has never apologized for anything; it's always "sorry to hear you didn't like this," or "sorry you felt that way." That is not apologizing. That is deflection, and in a world that's more and more aware of abuse tactics and gaslighting techniques, fewer people are dumb enough to fall for any of that.

The transition to A Realm Reborn symbolized the transition to the Smartphone Generation's era of flashiness, emptiness, things spelled out for you, things handed to you. v1 and v2+ are both great in their own ways, with v2+ eclipsing it due to the sheer amount of effort and content that has been put into it over the years. But people saying there's some huge disparity between v1 and v2+ don't describe what I experienced.

Final Fantasy is not a game series I've played, it's a game type/genre that doesn't really appeal to me. But I love hearing the stories and details on how games are made, the struggles game devs go through and, especially in this case, just what they think of the decisions taken by "higher ups". I think it finally lays to rest the notion that the developers themselves don't care, and shows that they are indeed very passionate people who want to make content that people enjoy, that they hurt when things go wrong They certainly seemed to have been very open and honest with you Danny and I think that is a testament and credit to your level of work. Very looking forward to part 2

The greatest thing about Final Fantasy is that the series has taken on so many different forms, aesthetics, themes, and so forth that there's almost a Final Fantasy game for everyone at this point and most of the big ones are pretty good. Whether you're looking for turn-based gameplay, aciton-based, even strategy, and medieval, sci-fi, steampunk and mish-mash settings. There's even significant variance in the amount of cutscenes/story depending on which game you're looking at. I'd recommend taking a look at some of the numbered games and seeing if there's anything that catches your eye.

Oh i dont agree with (the OPs) comment at all. Many of the original team didnt care at all, because if they did care instead of cosmetics but making a functional game it wouldnt of been the crapshoot that 1.0 was. Head devs laughed and scoffed at the idea of jumping, communication was non existent, and a smug attude was exuding from the whole process. Square is blessed to have such a loyal fanbase - if this was any other title by any other company it would of went belly up and stayed that way. And what boggles the mind is this, if that broken mess shipped and was nearly meeting its projected goals do you honestly think we would of gotten Yoshita and his unique project management skills? No we would of had a half completed broken game chugging along under a FF brand name. In retrospect its like the game crash of the 80s, it happened and stronger companies came forth because of it. 1.0 needed to crash and burn, now we have the excellent borderline prefect mmo that is ARR.

All their hard work and passion was for naught. I can't imagine how that must feel.. Yet they didn't give up and worked so hard... making the game the masterpiece it is today. They're all so truly strong and very, very courageous.

It's funny because SHB was the first expansion that was almost entirely story content from the new team. The other expansions were wrapping up leftover story lines from 1.0. they seem to be getting more successful the more content is generated entirely from the team Yoshi-P formed.

i love hearing about the developers and localizers behind ffxiv. It's my understanding Koji is behind 75% of the pop culture references and puns in the game and that gives the game a metric ton of charisma. Also Koji had it backwards. FF11 resembled the MMO experience like everquest, anarchy online, a little bit after 11, lineage 2. WoW was a redheaded stepchild that brought the MMO experience to the most common denominator. When they were taking applications for closed beta my roommate with a @ dated pentium 4 system was accepted while my application was rejected.
